Tullio Underwood Gray

Tullio "Tug" Underwood Gray, 80, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000 at Carleton-Willard Village in Bedford. He was the husband of the late Felix (Hinkley) Gray, who died in 1993.

Born in 1918 in Rome, Italy to an American mother and an Italian father, he was baptized at St. Peter's Basilica. He was educated at the Irish Christian Brothers School of Marcantonio Colonna. He moved to the United States in the 1930s, attended UCLA for a year then joined the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Merchant Marines, serving in the Pacific and also as a teacher of navigation at Officer Training School in New London, Conn.

Mr. Gray joined Pan Am after VJ Day as student airport manager at La Guardia, where his first job was tying up the last of the old flying boats. Over the next 35 years he filled various management positions retiring in 1980. He met Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy and Nixon, accompanied Pope Paul VI on a trip to Turkey and received the Stella della Solidarieta, an award given by the Italian government to foreigners who have promoted the national interests of Italy. His hobbies included rowing, swimming, reading and classical music.

Mr. Gray is survived by two daughters, Liz of Natick and Kate of Arcata, Calif., and three grandchildren, Megan ,Lucas and Dylan.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to either the MSPCA, 350 South Huntington Ave., Jamaica Plain, MA 02130 or the Tullio Gray Book Fund at the Dana Hall School Library, 45 Dana Rd., Wellesley, MA 02482.

Arthur Govostes

Arthur J. Govostes Jr., 71, of Belmont, formerly of Woburn, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000 in Memorial Hospital, Pembroke Pines, Fla. after a short illness. He was the husband of Rita (Gannon) Govostes.

Born in Woburn he was the son of the late Arthur J. and Sarah (Harkins) Govostes. Upon graduation from Woburn High School he immediately enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was the owner of ARGO Studio of Photography in West Newton for many years. After retirement from photography he went to work at the postal department and was a letter carrier in Arlington retiring 10 years ago as a supervisor. He was a member and past commander of Disabled American Veterans Chapter 10 of Dorchester, an avid golfer and also enjoyed working with photography studios.

Besides his wife of 49 years, he is survived by four brothers, Walter of Bedford, Kenneth of Reading, Norman of Burlington and William of Woburn; two sisters, Mary Welden of Winchester and Barbara Uliano of Wakefield and many nieces and nephews. His brother Donald died Jan. 11.

The funeral will be held today, Feb. 10 from the P.J. Cox & Sons Funeral Home, 14 Highland St., Woburn at 10 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass in St. Charles Church at 11 a.m. Burial will be in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne Thursday at 2:30 p.m.

Sarah C. Gale

Sarah C. Gale, 96, of Terre Haute, Ind., formerly of Bedford and Lexington, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000 in Royal Oaks Health Care and Rehabilitation Center, Terre Haute. She was the wife of the late John C. Gale.

Born in Rockport, she was the daughter of the late Reginald Richard and Oline (Peterson) Colley. She lived most of her life in Massachusetts, moving from Lexington to Bedford in 1969. In 1997 she moved to Terre Haute.

She graduated from Simmons College in 1925 and was a librarian at Dartmouth College and Massachusetts Institute of Technology before marrying her husband in 1936. Later she returned to work as a librarian and retired from the Bedford Public Library.

For many years she was active in the Lexington Field and Garden Club serving as president from 1957 to 1959 and as chairman of the Morning Study Group from 1960 to 1962 and the Church of Our Redeemer in Lexington. She was also active in the Florence Crittendon League and served as a docent at the Hancock-Clarke House in Lexington from 1982 to 1985.

Mrs. Gale is survived by a daughter, Sarah E. Gale who recently retired as librarian at Indiana State University, Terre Haute; a son John, of northern California and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Church of Our Redeemer, 6 Meriam St., Lexington, MA 02173 or the Bedford Public Library, Mudge Way, Bedford, MA 01730.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, Terre Haute.

Margaret E. Ford

ABINGTON -- Margaret E. (Cavanaugh) Ford, 94, died Monday, Feb. 14, 2000 at Logan Health Care Center in Braintree after a lengthy illness. She was the wife of the late William G. Ford.

Born in Somerville, she was employed as a nurse at the VA Hospital in Bedford for 31 years and worked at the Chelsea Soldiers Home until her retirement several years ago. She lived in Florida for 25 years prior to moving to Abington 10 years ago.

Mrs. Ford is survived by a son, James N. Scott of Tewksbury; a daughter, Anne J. McGonagle of Abington; 19 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren. She was also mother of the late William Scott and Barbara Cooke and sister of the late John, James and Maurice Cavanaugh and Mary Travers and Helen Wells.

A memorial Mass was held in St. Williams Church, Tewksbury, Saturday, Feb. 19. Interment will take place in Bay Pines National Cemetery, Florida.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Hulrey Funeral Home, Holbrook.

Jack D. Finley

Jack D. Finley, 72, of Naples, Fla., formerly of Acton, died Monday, Dec. 20, 1999. He was husband of Janice (Burpee) Finley.

Born in Needmore, Ind., he graduated from Bloomington High School and in 1949 graduated from the United States Military Academy. He earned a master's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois. He remained in the military until 1956, when he resigned as a captain.

He began his career with Ramo-Wooldridge Corp. where he was involved with the first flights of the Atlas, Titan and Thor ballistic missiles. In 1961 he became vice president of Research and Engineering for Data Corporation in Dayton, Ohio. In 1968 he began Eikonix Corporation with Saul Kurlat in Bedford, Mass. which they sold to Kodak Corporation in 1985.

In 1987 he became managing trustee of the Jack D. and Beverly B. Finley Charitable Foundation; chairman of the Board of Trustees of Westbrook College in Portland, Maine; chairman, Board of Directors Quipp, Inc., Miami, Fla.; trustee of the University of New England and director of Wyndemere Country Club in Naples. He resided in Acton for 31 years before moving to Naples permanently in September.

Besides his wife of 52 years, Mr. Finley is survived by three daughters, Janice Blair Finley, Jennifer Brooke Finley Nichols and Jena Blake Finley; his mother, Esther Keithly Finley of Clear Creek, Ind.; three brothers, Kenneth, George and William Finley; two sisters, Joanne Finley May and Mary Jane Finley Chafin and five grandchildren.

Interment will take place in early April at the United States Military Academy.

Donations may be made in his memory to the American Heart Association.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Fuller Funeral Home, Naples, Fla.

Mai K. Dillmore

Mai K. (Guinard) Dillmore of Bedford, formerly of Jacksonville, Fla., died at her home Sunday, Feb. 6, 2000. She was the wife of the late Wilson H. Dillmore who died in 1989.

Born in Williamsport, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Isaac and Ollie (March) Guinard. A longtime resident of Jacksonville, she was co-director of the Meals on Wheels Program and a member of the Arlington Presbyterian Church of Jacksonville. She was also a member of the Hancock United Church of Christ, Lexington, and an active volunteer at Bowman and Harrington Grade School in Lexington.

She is survived by a daughter, Kay E. Dillmore of Bedford; a son, Wilson D. Dillmore and his wife Patricia H. of Los Angeles, Calif., and her grandson Russell Cody Dillmore.

A memorial service was held in the Hancock United Church of Christ.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Harrington School Playground Committee, Harrington School, 146 Maple St., Lexington, MA 02420.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Bedford Funeral Home.

Ethel M. Brown

Ethel M. Brown, 84, of Bedford, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000 at the Walden Rehabilitation Center in Concord. She was the wife of the late Frank X. Brown.

Born Feb. 27, 1915 in Medford, she was the daughter of the late Clarence E. and Elizabeth (O'Brien) Farnam. She graduated from Medford High School, then went on to the Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School. Prior to retirement, Mrs. Brown was a restaurant manager. She was also a member of St. Michael Church in Bedford.

Mrs. Brown is survived by her children, Frank Brown of Scituate, Doris Birchall of Bedford, David Brown of Florida, Diane Harlow of Lowell, Judy Smulski of Lowell, Jeffrey Brown of Bedford, William Brown of Tucson, Ariz., and Susan Brown of Bedford. She is also survived by her two sisters Ruth Farnam of Braintree and Phyllis Marrassee of California.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Saturday, Feb. 12 at St. Michael Church. Interment was in Shawsheen Cemetery in Bedford. Arrangements are in the care of the Bedford Funeral Home, 167 Great Road, Bedford.

Jeanette M. Gittins-Amaral

Jeanette M. "June" Gittins-Amaral, 82, of Bedford, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2000 at the Leonard Morse Hospital. She was the wife of the late Charles E. Gittins and John A. Amaral.

Born in Reading she was the daughter of the late Martin C. and Laura (Rasmussen) Welch. She was raised in Brookline and attended the Brookline schools. She had been a Bedford resident since 1952, living on Alaska Road. She worked for the Bedford School Department at the Bedford High School cafeteria and later as a telephone operator at the E.N. Rogers V.A. Hospital in Bedford. She was also a member of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary.

She is survived by her son, Charles E. Gittins Jr. and his wife Nancy of Millis; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was also mother of the late Ronald C. Gittins.

A funeral service will be held in the Bedford Funeral Home, 167 Great Rd., Bedford, Friday at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home today, Feb. 24, 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Interment will be at Shawsheen Cemetery in Bedford.

John L. Sullivan

John L. Sullivan, 78, of Belmont, died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2000 at St. Elizabeth's Hospital. He was the husband of Elizabeth (Carlin) Sullivan.

Born in Cambridge, he was a graduate of Boston College class of 1942. Prior to his retirement he was a sales manager for Munroe Auto Equipment Co. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a lecturer and Eucharistic Minister at Our Lady of Marcy Church and a member of the Woodland Country Club.

Besides his wife, Mr. Sullivan is survived by three sons, John L. Jr. of Belmont, Thomas P. of Gardner and Peter G. of Bedford; a daughter, Mary Ann McAuliffe of Sandwich; a sister, Mary O'Loughlin of Belmont and nine grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Susan Sullivan.

The funeral was held Wednesday, Feb. 2 from the Stanton Funeral Home, Watertown with a funeral Mass in Our Lady of Mercy Church, Belmont. Interment took place in Cambridge Cemetery.

Contributions in Mr. Sullivan's memory may be made to Our Lady of Mercy Church, 401 Belmont St., Belmont, MA 02478.

Viola Morande

Viola Grace (MacKay) Morande, 86, of Marshfield, died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2001, at the Jordan Hospital in Plymouth. She was the wife of the late William J. Morande.

Born in Nova Scotia, she attended schools there. Formerly of Arlington she moved to Marshfield four years ago. She was formerly employed as a visitor receptionist at the Symmes Hospital in Arlington. She was a longtime member of the Arlington Heights Methodist Church and the Marshfield United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Morande is survived by one son, Donald F. Morande of Marshfield; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and two sisters, Minnie Wentzell of Bedford and Ethel Hall of Nova Scotia. She was predeceased by a son Kenneth Morande and two brothers, Donald and Franklin MacKay.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, Nov. 24 at 11 a.m. at the Marshfield United Methodist Church, 185 Plain St., Marshfield with the Rev. Dr. Richard C. Devor, interim pastor, officiating. Interment will be held at a later date in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Arlington.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of MacDonald Funeral Home, Marshfield.

Betsy H. Dona, 90, a longtime Bedford resident

Betsy Herrling Dona, 90, a longtime Bedford resident, died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, at Rivercrest Deaconess Nursing Home in Concord. She was the wife of Richard B. Herrling who died in 1960 and Everett Dona who died in 1993.

She was a graduate of St. Lawrence University and taught Latin and French at Bedford High School from 1961 until her retirement in 1977. She lived in Bedford from 1947 to 2000 where she was active in the town, participating in the Woman’s Club, the PTA, the Bedford Teacher’s Association, the Bedford Choral Group and was an active member of the First Church of Christ Congregational.

Mrs. Dona was also involved in the Bedford-Lexington branch of the American Association of University Women and the Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority, holding offices in both.

She is survived by three sons David Herrling of Lake Mary, Fla., John Herrling of East Millstone, N.J. and Malcolm (Mac) Herrling of Orland, Maine; five grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

A funeral service was held Wednesday, Nov. 28 at the First Church of Christ Congregational. Interment was in Shawsheen Cemetery, Bedford.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Bedford Funeral Home.
