Carl J. Daigle, 53, leaves family in Chelmsford
TEWKSBURY — Carl J. Daigle, 53, formerly of Dracut, died unexpectedly Oct. 10, 2001, at Lowell General Hospital. He was the husband of Elaine M. (Pappas) Daigle.
He was born in Lowell on June 18, 1948, the son of the late Raymond I. and Alice B. (Gregoire) Daigle. He attended St. Louis Grammar School and graduated from Dracut High School in 1966. He continued his education at Northern Essex Community College in Haverhill and Sam Houston State University in Texas.
Mr. Daigle owned and operated Daigle Real Estate Rentals. He enjoyed collecting antique cars and was an avid boater.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Alexander Daigle of Tewksbury; a daughter, Alyssa Daigle of Coventry, Conn.; a brother, Richard Daigle and his wife Machiko of Laramie, Wyo.; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, James and Ann Pappadopoulos of Chelmsford; a brother-in-law, George Pappadopoulos and his wife Sylvia of Chelmsford; two sisters-in-law, Thalia Loosigian and her husband Ralph of Chelmsford, and Joanne Avakian and her husband Joanne of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass was celebrated Oct. 15, in St. Louis de France Church in Lowell. Interment was in Richardson Cemetery, Dracut.

William H. Hanson, 48, formerly of Tewksbury
NASHUA, N.H. — William H. " Bill " Hanson, 48, a former Tewksbury resident, died unexpectedly on Friday, Oct. 5, 2001, at Warren Hospital in Hope, N.J.
He was born in Lowell on Aug. 16, 1953, the son of Henry A. and Edith (Brear) Hanson of Nashua, N.H., and attended local schools.
Mr. Hanson was employed as an over-the-road truck driver for Kazmi Transportation of Nashua, traveling the east coast and in Texas.
He enjoyed woodworking and working on cars.
Mr. Hanson lived in Nashua for two years, having previously resided in Tewksbury.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by two sons, Zachary Hanson and Jacob Hanson, both of Lowell; a daughter, Micayla Hanson of Tewksbury; three brothers, Robert Jones and his wife Peggy of Dunnellon, Fla., Bruce Hanson of Nashua, N.H., and Kevin Hanson of San Francisco, Calif.; two sisters, Carol Belanger and her husband Kenneth of Groveland, and Sandra Martin of Groton; his former wife, Kim Hanson of Lowell; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A funeral service was held Oct. 15, from the Laurent Funeral Home in Nashua, N.H. Interment was in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Ethel M. Hickey, 93, of Chelmsford
CHELMSFORD — Ethel M. Hickey, 93, died Oct. 17, 2001, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital of natural causes.
She was born in Lawrence.
Ms. Hickey was a member of St. Patrick’s Church.
She is survived by a brother, John Hickey of Chelmsford; and several nieces and nephews, including Suzanne (Hickey) Farinha of Chelmsford.
Private funeral services were held in Lawrence.
James E. Lewis, 80, of Tewksbury
TEWKSBURY — James E. Lewis, 80, died unexpectedly Oct. 18, 2001, at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Edgewood, Ky., while attending a reunion of the U.S. Army’s 97th Bomb Group. He was the husband of Therese B. (Paradis) Lewis.
He was born in Arlington on Feb. 7, 1921, the son of the late William H. and Mary E. (Loftus) Lewis. He was raised in Methuen and graduated from Methuen High School, where he was a standout athlete.
Mr. Lewis was a longtime resident of North Tewksbury and a communicant of St. Robert Bellarmine Church in Andover.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II, with the 97th Bomb Group, 342nd Bombardment Squadron. He was awarded several decorations, including the Good Conduct Medal, the Victory Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Theatre Campaign Ribbon, the American Theatre Campaign Ribbon, and the Air Medal. Mr. Lewis was honorably discharged on Nov. 4, 1945, at the rank of technical sergeant.
He was a graduate of Boston University where he received a degree in business administration. He later earned an associate’s degree at the former Lowell Technological Institute’s school of engineering. He was a registered professional engineer.
Prior to his retirement in 1983, Mr. Lewis was a senior industrial engineer for 30 years at Western Electric Co. of North Andover. In addition, he was on the adjunct faculty at Merrimack College in North Andover.
He was an avid golfer and a former member of the Crystal Springs Gold Club of Haverhill.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Suzanne T. Lewis of Lowell, and Kathleen M. Sanford and her husband David of Kingston, N.H.; a brother, William F. Lewis of Dracut; a sister, Mary E. Griffin of Ashburn, Va.; four grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Dorothy R. McCarthy.
A funeral was held Oct. 23, from the Farmer & Dee Funeral Home in Tewksbury, followed by a funeral Mass in St. Robert Bellarmine Church, Andover. Interment was in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Tewksbury.
Catherine A. Bannon, 93, formerly of Arlington
CAMBRIDGE — Catherine Agnes Bannon, 93, of Cambridge, died Sunday, Oct. 21, 2001, at St. Patrick’s Manor in Framingham. She was the daughter of the late Francis and Hannah (Calnan) Bannon.
Born in Cambridge, she lived in Arlington for over 60 years before moving to Cambridge in 1972. Prior to retirement, she was employed as a bookkeeper at John Hancock Insurance Company where she worked for many years. She was a former member of the Legion of Mary at St. Peter’s Church in Cambridge.
Ms. Bannon is survived by two nieces, Sister Peggy Lowell, C.S.J., of Watertown and Nancy F. Sprague of Attleboro.
The funeral was held Wednesday, Oct. 24 at St. Agnes Church in Arlington with interment following in Cambridge Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Keefe Funeral Home, Arlington.
David Pannesi, 84, leaves family in Arlington
WATERTOWN — David Pannesi, 84, died Oct. 15, 2001, at the Emerson Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. He was the husband of Catherine " Kay " (Williams) Pannesi.
He was born in East Boston, the son of the late Pasquale and Angelina Pannesi.
He was employed by the city of Boston for the office of Housing and Urban Development as an office manager.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, John Pannesi of Watertown and Gerald Pannesi of Key West, Fla.; a brother, Pasquale Pannesi of Watertown; two sisters, Anna Flodstrom of Arlington and Angelina Heino of Arlington; and three grandchildren. He was also the brother of the late Angelo, Anthony and Frank Pannesi, Dolores McDonough, and Josephine Pannesi.
A funeral was held Oct. 19, from the DeVito Funeral Home in Watertown, followed by a funeral Mass in St. Luke’s Church, Belmont. Interment was in Ridgelawn Cemetery.
Antonietta Schiavone, 51, of Arlington
ARLINGTON — Antonietta Schiavone, 51, died Oct. 17, 2001, at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston following a brief illness. She was the wife of Gaetano Schiavone.
She was born in Pratola Serra, Italy, the daughter of Carmela (Mauro) DeFabrizio of Revere and the late Giuseppe DeFabrizio. She was a 29-year resident of Arlington.
In addition to her husband and mother, she is survived by three sons, Anthony Schiavone and his wife Barbara, Guy Schiavone and Joe Schiavone, all of Arlington; two brothers, Serafino DeFabrizio of Lynn and Mario DeFabrizio of Revere; and a granddaughter.
A funeral Mass was celebrated Oct.20, in St. Agnes Church in Arlington. Interment was in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Arlington.

William G. Feely
Tool and die maker
MAYNARD — William G. Feely, 78, of Maynard, formerly of Acton, died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001, at the Emerson Hospital in Concord. He was the husband of Barbara (Lucia) Feely, to whom he was married for 48 years.
He was born and raised in Acton, the son of the late William B. and Annie V. (Manning) Feely. After graduation, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a former machinist and tool and die maker for the Frank B. Lothrop Company in South Acton. A Maynard resident for the past 48 years, he was a former member of the Maynard Lodge of Elks, and especially enjoyed woodworking.
1n addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter Gail Olson of Hudson; two sons, Garry Feely of Bolton and Glen Feely of South Carolina; a brother John Feely of Acton; and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, Oct. 22 from the Martin &. Doran Funeral Home, Maynard, followed by a funeral Mass in St. Bridget Church, Maynard. Burial was in Glenwood Cemetery in Maynard.
Thomas J. Dempsey
Thomas J. Dempsey, 81, a lifelong Concord resident, died Oct. 22, 2001, at Emerson Hospital in Concord.
He was born in Concord on Jan. 1, 1920, the son of the late John J. and Anna C. (Moreau) Dempsey. He attended Concord schools and Concord High School.
During World War II, Mr. Dempsey served in the U.S. Army as a private in the Coast Artillery in Hawaii. He was the recipient of the Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, American Theater Campaign Ribbon, and Asiatic Pacific Theatre Campaign Ribbon.
In 1993 and 1997 he achieved a lifelong dream of returning to Hawaii and Pearl Harbor where he had been stationed 50 years earlier.
He was a retired 33-year employee of the town of Concord Highway Department.
Since his childhood, among his activities was a daily walk to downtown Concord to visit friends and take in the scenery of his beloved hometown.
Mr. Dempsey was active with the Concord Council on Aging and impaired vision groups.
He is survived by three brothers, Edward Dempsey of Lexington, Robert Dempsey of Arlington, and Arthur Dempsey of Concord; a niece; two grandnieces; and several cousins. He was also the brother of the late John Dempsey and Mary Luhaink.
A funeral will be held at 9 a.m. on Oct. 26 from the Joseph Dee & Son Funeral Home in Concord, followed by a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Bernard’s Church. Interment was in St. Bernard’s Cemetery, Concord.
Concord’s town flag will be flown on at half-staff Friday in honor of Mr. Dempsey’s World War II military service.

Mary Varano
Mary (Frasca) Varano, 92, of Lexington, died Sunday, Oct. 21, 2001, at the Lahey Clinic. She was the wife of the late James Varano.
Born in Boston, she was the daughter of the late Rose and Pasquale Frasca.
She worked for the Lexington schools food service department for 25 years. A homemaker, she enjoyed cooking and her family.
Mrs. Varano is survived by a son, Ben J. Varano of Lexington; two brothers, Anthony J. Frasca of Waltham and Rocco M. Frasca of Lexington; a sister, Sue Kozel, also of Lexington; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was the mother of the late Richard P. Varano.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Oct. 24 at the Douglass Funeral Home, Lexington. Interment was in Westview Cemetery.
