Carolyn E. McDonald
Carolyn Elizabeth McDonald, 90, of Belmont, died Jan. 19, 2000, at the Cape Heritage Nursing Home in Sandwich. She was the wife of the late James A. McDonald. Born in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 15, 1909, she was the daughter of the late John T. and Frances E. (Lane) Noonan. She moved to Cambridge at an early age where she graduated from St. Mary's High School. She continued her education at Emmanuel College in Boston and received a master's degree in French from Boston College. Following graduation she was employed as a school teacher for the city of Waltham, where she taught science at the Kennedy Junior High School for 20 years until her retirement in 1968. She was a member of the Massachusetts Teachers Association. Mrs. McDonald lived in Sandwich for the past five years. She previously lived in Belmont for 50 years, summering in North Scituate. She is survived by a son, James A. McDonald Jr. of Malden; a daughter, Carolyn P. Benway of Mashpee; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was also the sister of the late Sr. Frances St. John of Worcester. A mass of Christian Burial was held Jan. 24, at the Immaculate Conception Church, Malden. Interment was in Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden. For those who wish, contributions in Mrs. McDonald's memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 36 Cameron Ave., Cambridge, MA 02140-1120. James. L. Rielly
James. L. Rielly, 79, a lifelong resident of Belmont, died suddenly Jan. 7, 2000. He was the husband of Agnes M. (Hughes) Rielly. Mr. Rielly was the son of the late Patrick J. and Frances (Maguire) Rielly. Mr. Rielly was a veteran of World War II, where he served in the Aleutian Islands. For many years he was employed by The Belmont Springs Water Co. In addition to his wife, he is survived by eight sons, Edward P. Rielly of Waltham, James L. Rielly Jr. of San Francisco, Calif., Michael G. Rielly of Pepperell, Paul J. Rielly of Belmont, Thomas C. Rielly of Burlington, John F. Rielly of Waltham, Terence A. Rielly of Groton, and Kevin J. Rielly of Belmont; a brother, Francis Aloysius Rielly F.S.C. of Lynncroft, N.J; and 11 grandchildren. He was also the brother of the late John J. Rielly and Margaret M. Rielly. A funeral service was held from the Brown & Sons Funeral Home, followed by a funeral mass in St. Joseph's Church, Belmont. Interment was in Belmont Cemetery. Agnes C. O'Connor
Agnes C. (McMahon) O'Connor, 98, of Belmont, formerly of Malden, died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000 at Wingate at Brighton Nursing Facility. She was the wife of the late James J. O'Connor. Born in Johnstone, Scotland, she was a resident of Malden for more than 15 years before moving to the nursing facility in 1995. She was a homemaker. Mrs. O'Connor is survived by a daughter, Catherine A. Johnson and her husband, Raymond F. of Belmont; a sister, Jane Barnett of North Quincy; and two grandchildren. The funeral was held from the Short, Williamson & Diamond Funeral Home, Belmont, Monday, Jan. 24 with a funeral Mass in Our Lady of Mercy Church, Belmont. Interment followed in New Calvary Cemetery, Boston. William A. Bradley
William A. Bradley, 79, of Belmont, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000. He was the husband of Mary (Gannon) Bradley. A resident of Belmont for 47 years, Mr. Bradley was owner of Old Colony Trucking Co. Besides his wife, survivors include a daughter, Darlene Agnew and her husband Pierre Agnew of Beverly Farms; two sisters, Catherine Lundquest of Woburn and Jean Millhouser of Florida; and a brother, Gordon Bradley of Brighton. The funeral was held from the Brown & Sons Funeral Home, Belmont, Tuesday, Jan. 25 followed by a funeral Mass at St. Patrick's Church, Watertown. Interment took place in St. Patrick's Cemetery.
Edward C. Doherty
Edward C. Doherty, 64, of Norwood, formerly of Belmont, died Jan. 23, 2000, at Caritas Norwood Hospital, following a short illness. Mr. Doherty was born in Jamaica Plain. He was employed as a plasterer. Mr. Doherty is survived by four children; five brothers, George M. Doherty of Waltham, Bernard J. Doherty of Wollaston, John J. Doherty of Norwood, William F. Doherty of Squantum, and Paul A. Doherty of Foxboro; a sister, Mary W. Doherty of Foxboro; and several nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Sally D'Entremont. A funeral mass was held Jan. 26, in St. Catherine's Church. Interment was in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Boston. Arrangements were under the direction of the Gillooly Funeral Home, Norwood.
Josephine E. Russell
Josephine E. Russell, 97, of Arlington, died Jan. 25, 2000, at Milton Health Care in Milton.
Born in Boston on Feb. 25, 1902, she was the daughter of the late Robert J. and Ida Anna (Keefe) Russell. She was a 25-year resident of Arlington.
Miss Russell was a retired legal secretary of the Veterans Administration. She was also a parishioner of St. Agnes Church.
She is survived by a sister, Pearl McMurray of Lexington; two nieces, Susan Neary and Mary Mantone, both of Walpole; a nephew, Robert McMurray of Belmont; and several grand-nieces and grand-nephews. She was also the sister of the late Robert J. Russell and Marguerite Russell.
A funeral mass was held Jan. 27, in St. Agnes Church. Interment was in St. Francis Cemetery, Walpole.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Keefe Funeral Home, Arlington.
Julia L. Giles
Julia L. Giles, 85, of Belmont and Capital Island, Boothbay Harbor, Maine, died Jan. 5, 2000, at St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor. She was the wife of the late Lloyd B. Giles. Born in Atlanta, Ga., she was the daughter of the late Pearl Gibson and Rachel Bradford Lombard. She lived in Belmont since 1947. Mrs. Giles attended Girls' High School in Atlanta, where she was a member of the Sunev Sorority. She was a member and past president of the Epsilon Chapter of the Beta Sigma Phi International sorority and was vice president of the Sorority City Council. She was later employed as a secretary at Liberty Mutual Insurance Company, until meeting and marrying her husband while he was stationed in the Army in Atlanta. Mrs. Giles was involved in many civic organizations and was a 52-year member of the Payson Park Church, serving in many capacities. At the same time her summers were always enjoyed at the family retreat on Capitol Island, outside of Boothbay Harbor, Maine. She is survived by a son, Charles L. Giles and his wife Elaine Marie of Belmont and Capitol Island; a daughter, Deborah Giles Watson and her husband Donald B. of Boothbay Harbor, Maine; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A funeral service was held Jan. 10, at Story Chapel in Mount Auburn Cemetery. Interment followed in Mount Auburn Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Brown & Sons Funeral Home of Belmont.
Ruth E. Donovan
Ruth E. Donovan, 92, a resident of Woburn for more than 40 years, died in Wakefield on Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000. She was the wife of the late Frank J. Donovan, who died in 1986. Born in Arlington, she was the daughter of the late Arthur W. and Mary Jane (Gilfedder) Haviland. She was raised in Belmont, graduating from Belmont High School in 1924. She was one of the early recruits for the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps. She enlisted in September 1943 and trained at Fort Devens. She reached the rank of technical sergeant while working as a clerk/stenographer in the Adjutant General's Office, stationed primarily in Fort Sheridan, Ill., for the duration of the war. After World War II, she continued to work for the U.S. government at the Veteran's Administration in Boston for the director of Medical Service, and later as secretary to the director of Construction, Supply and Real Estate Service. When the department was liquidated in 1949, she went to work as clerk/stenographer in the Wing Adjutant at Otis Air Force Base in Falmouth. She was transferred to the Department of Navy in Boston in 1950, and worked there until she resigned from the Navy in 1951. Mrs. Donovan lived in Woburn throughout her married life and in 1968 was appointed to serve on the newly organized Woburn Conservation Commission, one of the first in the state. For many years she was an active member of the American Legion, serving at one time as post commander of Post 409 in Belmont. Mrs. Donovan enjoyed traveling and composing poetry. Some of her works were published in the Woburn Times and the Boston Globe. She is survived by a daughter, Catherine M. Amatnieks and her husband Yuri of Mississauga, Ontario; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by three sisters, Ethel C. and Marion J. Haviland and Dorothy G. Fitzgerald; and a brother, Edward J. Haviland. The funeral was held from the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, Woburn, on Monday, Feb. 28 followed by a funeral Mass in St. Barbara's Church. Interment followed in St. Paul's Cemetery, Arlington.
Joanne A. Scopa
Joanne A. (Oliveri) Scopa, 60, of Delray Beach, Fla., formerly of Watertown and Belmont, died Friday, Feb. 25, 2000. She was the wife of Anthony J. "Tony" Scopa. Born in Boston, she was the daughter of John Oliveri of Belmont and the late Josephine (Ferraro) Oliveri. She was a graduate of Framingham State College, class of 1957, and for many years was a teacher for the Newton school system. Besides her husband and father, Mrs. Scopa is survived by two sons, Anthony of Waltham, and Andrew of Florida; a daughter, Joy Scopa of New York; a sister, Marie Reale of Dedham; and two brothers, Andrew Oliveri of Needham and John Oliveri of Westwood. A memorial Mass will be held in St. Luke's Church, Lexington St., Belmont, on Friday, March 3 at 9 a.m. Relatives and friends may call at the Short, Williamson & Diamond Funeral Home, 52 Trapelo Road, Belmont, Thursday, 6 to 9 p.m. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the National Kidney Foundation, 105 Eastern Ave., Dedham, MA 02026.
