George E. Withington, 72

Tuesday, January 13, 1998

FITCHBURG -- George E. Withington, 72, of 60 Albee St., a retired flea market dealer, died Sunday in Leominster Hospital after an illness.

He leaves his wife of 39 years, Betty M. (Aubrey) Withington; a sister, Grace Sullivan of Fitchburg; nephews and nieces. He was born in Fitchburg, son of John and Grace (Miller) Withington. He was a World War II Army veteran.

Mr. Withington was a life member of Cleghorn Chapter 30, Disabled American Veterans. He was an avid bingo player.

The funeral service will be at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow in Smith-Mallahy-Masciarelli Funeral Home, 243 Water St. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery. Calling hours are 7 to 9 tonight, and 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. tomorrow at the funeral home. Members of Cleghorn Chapter, Disabled American Veterans, will meet there at 11 a.m. tomorrow to conduct a service.

Virginia M. Smith, 80

SPENCER -- Virginia M. Smith, 80, of 167 North West Road, died Sunday, June 3, in Quaboag on the Common, West Brookfield.

She leaves her husband of 59 years, Robert M. Smith; two sons, Robert I. Smith of Spencer and Kenneth M. Smith of North Brookfield; three daughters, Iaina R. White of Worcester, Dr. Gail E. Carberry of Easthampton, and Deborah J. Bailey of Spencer; a foster daughter, Lorinda M. Sam-Moyles of the Shoshone Indian Tribe of the Duckwater Reservation, Nevada; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. A sister, Barbara J. Vander Pyl of Northboro, died in 1991. She was born in Worcester, daughter of Frederick and Mildred E. (Hubbard) Morse, and graduated from North High School in Worcester and Becker Junior College, also in Worcester.She enjoyed reading, gardening, and cooking.

She founded the Virginia M. Smith Scholarship Award Endowment for Courage and Perserverance in the Face of Significant Life Challenges.

The memorial service will be held at a later date. Burial will be private in Podunk Cemetery, East Brookfield. Calling hours are from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 6, in Pillsbury Funeral Home, 44 Gilbert St., North Brookfield. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Virginia M. Smith Scholarship, Springfield Technical Community College, 1 Armory Square, Springfield, MA 01105.

Emelia Wojcik, 79

Tuesday, January 13, 1998

WINDSOR LOCKS, Conn. -- Emelia (Wilbrad) Wojcik, 79, of 203 Reed Ave., formerly of Southbridge, Mass., a retired machinist, died yesterday in Kettlebrook Nursing Home.

Her husband, John Wojcik, died in 1991. She leaves a daughter, Patricia Paulhaus of Lancaster, Calif.; a brother, Ferdinand Wilbrad of Southbridge; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Born and raised in Southbridge, daughter of John and Sophie (Soka) Wilbrad, she lived 35 years in Windsor Locks.

Mrs. Wojcik was a machinist 30 years at Hamilton Standard Division of United Technologies Corp. before she retired.

The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Windsor Locks Funeral Home, 441 Spring St. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at the funeral home.

Isabelle F. Wronski, 71

Tuesday, January 13, 1998

WORCESTER -- Isabelle F. (Grant) Wronski, 71, of 141 Providence St., a Salvation Army volunteer, died Saturday at home after an illness.

She leaves three sons, Robert E., John I. and Joseph F. Wronski, all of Worcester; three daughters, Dreinda J. Mulka in Maine, Barbara A. Cialone in South Carolina and Antoinette L. Mason of Worcester; two sisters, Eva Pary in Maine and Margaret Grant in Maryland; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A daughter, Noreen E. Shabazz of Worcester, died in 1993. Born in Portland, Maine, daughter of Irving F. and Ida E. (Osterland) Grant, she lived 50 years in Worcester.

Mrs. Wronski was a shipyard worker in Maine. She was a volunteer 25 years in the Salvation Army Christmas Kettle program.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow in Graham, Putnam & Mahoney Funeral Parlors, 838 Main St. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery. Calling hours are 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.

Rose A. Allen, 93

Monday, June 22, 1998

LEOMINSTER -- Rose A. (Morand) Allen, 93, formerly of 164 North St., formerly of Fitchburg, died Saturday night in Keystone Nursing Home after a long illness.

Her husband of 56 years, Oliver J. Allen, died in 1980. She leaves two daughters, Dorothy Lyonnais of Leominster and Lucille Salazar of Fort Worth, Texas; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. She was born in Fitchburg, daughter of Pierre and Hermeline (Morand) Morand, and lived all her life in Fitchburg and Leominster.

Mrs. Allen was a member of Our Lady of the Lake Church in Leominster.

The funeral will be held tomorrow from Lavery-Chartrand Funeral Home, 99 Summer St., Fitchburg, with a Mass at 11 a.m. in Our Lady of the Lake Church, 1400 Main St. Burial will be in St. Bernard's Cemetery, Fitchburg. A calling hour is 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. tomorrow at the funeral home. Flowers may be sent, or memorial contributions made to a charity; and may be left at the funeral home.

Anna L. Allen, 81

Tuesday, June 23, 1998

ATHOL -- Anna L. (Piehl) Allen, 81, of 220 Lake Corner Road, Phillipston, formerly of Athol, long active in her church, died yesterday in Gardner Skilled Nursing Center, Gardner, after an illness.

Her husband of 55 years, Donald T. Allen, died last year. She leaves a son, Michael P. Allen of Phillipston, with whom lived; a brother, Herman Piehl of Deltona, Fla.; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. She was born in Charlton, daughter of Adolph and Louise (Kietzmann) Piehl, and lived here 45 years before moving to Phillipston in 1996. She graduated from Charlton High School in 1934.

Mrs. Allen was a charter member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Westminster and taught for many years in its Sunday school program. She served on the church Evangelism Visitation Committee. She was a member of the Athol Woman's Club.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in Fiske Funeral Home, 1356 Main St. Burial will be in Silver Lake Cemetery. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Our Savior Lutheran Church, Memorial Fund, PO Box 459, Westminster, MA 01473.

Rose M. Anders, 76

Thursday, June 25, 1998

DUDLEY -- Rose M. (Canty) Anders, 76, of 226 West Main St., a retired secretary, died yesterday in St. Vincent Hospital, Worcester.

Her husband, Raymond J. Anders, died in 1991. She leaves a son, Brian J. Anders of Dudley; a daughter, Maureen R. Manzi of Dudley; four brothers, Vincent Canty of Webster, Cyril P. Canty of Quinebaug, Conn., Brendan E. Canty of Dudley and Ambrose R. Canty of Southbridge; a sister, Theresa Cahill of Nashua, N.H.; two grandchildren; nephews and nieces; and cousins. She was born in Webster, daughter of Patrick and Annie (McCauley) Canty, and lived here most of her life. She graduated from St. Louis High School in Webster.

Mrs. Anders was a secretary at Cranston Print Works in Webster for many years, retiring in 1984.

She was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Church. She was also a former member of the Silver Dippers in Webster.

The funeral will be held Saturday from Scanlon Funeral Home, East Main St., Webster, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Anthony of Padua Church, 24 Dudley Hill Road. Burial will be in St. Anthony's Cemetery, Webster. Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Support Network, PO Box 839, Southbridge, MA 01550.

Lena Arminio, 78

Wednesday, June 24, 1998

NATICK -- Lena Arminio, 78, of Natick, formerly of Fitchburg, died Saturday at Mary Ann Morse Nursing Home after a brief illness.

She leaves four cousins, Anthony Cardellicchio, Eleanor Long Sullivan and Virginia Arminio Pierro, all of Natick, and Margaret Arminio Hewlett of Newburyport; and nephews and nieces. She was born in Natick, daughter of Leonardo and Maria (Cardellicchio) Arminio, and lived in Fitchburg and Framingham before returning here 10 years ago. She graduated from Fitchburg High School.

Miss Arminio worked at Cushing Hospital, Framingham, for more than 15 years, retiring in 1981.

The funeral was held yesterday from John Everett & Sons Funeral Home, 4 Park St., with a Mass at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church. Burial was at St. Patrick's Cemetery.

Roy L. Army, 78

Wednesday, June 24, 1998

MILLBURY -- Roy L. Army, 78, of 22 Burbank St., an Army veteran of World War II, died Monday at St. Vincent Hospital, Worcester, after a long illness.

He leaves his wife of 57 years, Stella M. (Patrock) Army; a son, Stephen D. Army of Sutton; a daughter, Dorene F. Boudreau of Millbury; a sister, Irene V. Army of Millbury; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and nephews and nieces. He was born in Millbury, son of Napoleon T. and Dora (Jette) Army, and lived here most of his life. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving as a staff sergeant in the Italian campaign.

Mr. Army was a groundskeeper at St. John's Cemetery, Worcester, for 12 years, retiring in 1995. He previously was a furnace operator at New England High Carbon Wire Co. He was a member of St. Brigid's Parish. He was also a member of Local 2936 of the United Steelworkers of America, and a life member and past president of the Singletary Rod & Gun Club in Oxford. He served several years as Cub master of Cub Scout Pack 101 and as a district commissioner of the Mohegan Council of the Boy Scouts of America. He was one of the original members of the Millbury Redevelopment Authority, serving for several years. An expert trapshooter, he won the State Handicap Trap Shooting Championship.

The funeral will be held tomorrow from Turgeon Funeral Home, 64 Main St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Brigid's Church. Burial will be at Central Cemetery. Calling hours are 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

George Arslanian, 72

Tuesday, June 23, 1998

SPRINGFIELD -- George Arslanian, 72, of 56 Santa Maria St., a bakery manager for many years, died yesterday in Baystate Medical Center.

He leaves his wife of 47 years, Susan (Derderian) Arslanian; a son, George Arslanian Jr. of Springfield; two daughters, Linda A. Arslanian and S. Carol Marchetti, both of South Hadley; three brothers, Paul Arslanian of Deerfield Beach, Fla., Arthur Arslanian of Sacramento, Calif., both formerly of Worcester, and Seth Arslanian of Worcester; three sisters, Rose Arslanian and Pearl Harootunian, both of Worcester, and Agnes Sagerian of Northboro; a granddaughter; nephews and nieces. He was born in Pelham, N.H., son of Margus and Ashkhen Arslanian, and was raised in Worcester. He graduated from a Worcester high school.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Mr. Arslanian was a manager at Ward Baking Co. where he worked for 23 years. He retired in 1977.

The funeral will be held Thursday from T.P. Sampson Funeral Home, Chapel of the Acres, 21 Tinkham Road, with a service at 11 a.m. in St. Mark's Armenian Apostolic Church, 2427 Wilbraham Road. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the George Arslanian Endowment Fund, St. Mark's Armenian Apostolic Church, 2427 Wilbraham Road, Springfield, MA 01129.

May R. Berthiaume, 80

Tuesday, June 23, 1998

GRAFTON -- May R. Berthiaume, 80, of The Brigham Hill Nursing Center, North Grafton, died yesterday after a long illness.

She was born in Worcester, daughter of Albena E. Berthiaume. She grew up in Worcester and lived at The Wrentham State School, Wrentham, for 38 years. She moved to North Grafton in 1967.

Miss Berthiaume was skilled in making Disney latch hook rugs. She also enjoyed reading the Bible and playing bingo.

A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. tomorrow in the Robert C. Roney-Grafton Funeral Home, 152 Worcester St., North Grafton. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, South Grafton. A calling time will be 9:30 to 10 a.m. tomorrow at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Brigham Hill Nursing Center, Resident Activity Fund, 23 North Brigham Hill Road., North Grafton, MA 01536.
