Eleanor G. Thurlow, 82

WORCESTER -- Eleanor G. (Danielson) Thurlow, 82, of Somerset, formerly of 727 Burncoat St., died Monday, April 2, in Charlton Medical Center, Fall River. Nordgren, Carrigan, Mangsen Memorial Chapel, 300 Lincoln St., is directing funeral arrangements, which are incomplete.

Donald Abood, 54; was Journal editor

JAMESTOWN, R.I. -- Donald Craig Abood, a former writer, editor and photographer at The Providence Journal, has died of complications from lung cancer. He was 54.

Abood worked for the Providence Journal and Evening Bulletin from 1970 to 1979. He worked as a reporter, bureau chief and picture editor, and eventually was named news editor of the Evening Bulletin.

From 1979 to 1994, he was director and co-founder of Picture Group, a Providence-based news photo agency. He also worked for four years at the Providence Business News as a copy editor and managing editor and served as editor of the Barrington Times for the last three years.

Abood, born in Albany, N.Y., earned his bachelor's degree from Union College. He served as a Marine from 1968 to 1970.

Abood died Wednesday. He is survived by a wife and son. A funeral is planned for tomorrow.

Walter S. Banach, 66

SUTTON -- Walter S. Banach, 66, of 51 Uxbridge Road, a retired mason, died at home Sunday, Aug. 13, after an illness.

He leaves three daughters, Lynne Belazarian of Millbury, Debra Ricciardi of Auburn, and Brenda Banach of Worcester; five sisters, Arline Stratford of Sutton, Elizabeth Marsland of Lighthouse Point, Fla., Diane Santolucito of Uxbridge, Theresa Leyden of Worcester, and Barbara Harbora of Tabernacle, N.J.; six grandchildren; nieces and nephews; a close companion, Kathleen Warren, with whom he lived; and his former wife, Muriel E (Conrad) Banach of Worcester. He was born in Worcester, son of Walter G. and Helen (Pietrzak) Banach, and was raised and educated in Sutton.

Mr. Banach was a mason for many years for the former B & W Waterproofing Co., and later worked for Paragon Plumbing in Worcester. He was an avid fisherman, and was a member and past president of the Worcester Striper Club.

The funeral will be Wednesday, Aug. 16, from Henry Funeral Home, 33 Ward St., Worcester, with a Mass at 10:30 a.m. in Our Lady of Czestochowa Church, 34 Ward St., Worcester. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery, Worcester. Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 15, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations be made to Why Me, Helping Children with Cancer, 316 Main St., Worcester MA 01608.

Carol A. Banfill, 58

Sunday, August 6, 2000

WORCESTER -- Carol A. (Giusto) Banfill, 58, of 2 Apricot St., owned the Giusto Rest Home, died Friday, Aug. 4, in the Hospice Residence after an illness.

Her husband, Richard H. Banfill, died in 1991. She leaves a son, Todd A. Banfill of Millbury. A sister, Ann Banfill, died before her. She was born in Worcester, daughter of Anthony and Albina (Atchue) Banfill.

Mrs. Banfill owned and operated the Giusto Rest Home for many years.

The funeral will be held Tuesday, Aug. 8, from O'Connor Brothers Funeral Home, 592 Park Ave., with a Mass at noon in St. Mary's Church, 17 Waterville St., North Grafton. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, North Grafton. Calling hours are 6 to 9 p.m. Monday, Aug. 7, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 19 Midstate Drive, Auburn, MA 01501.

Catherine R. Baril, 82

LEOMINSTER -- Catherine R. (Chiaravalloti) Baril, 82, of 881 Lancaster St., a retired variety store worker, died Tuesday, Aug. 8, in River Terrace Health Care, Lancaster, after an illness.

She leaves her husband of 60 years, Donald H. Baril; a son, Donald J. Baril of Leominster; two daughters, Patricia A. LaPosta of Leominster and Barbara L. Horgan of North Easton and Newport, R.I.; two sisters, Rose Ogilvie & Lena Sweatland, both of Clinton; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was born in Clinton, daughter of Joseph and Marianna Chiaravalloti, and lived in Leominster for many years.

Mrs. Baril worked in her husband's store, Don's Variety, for 21 years, retiring in 1977. She was a member of St. Leo's Church and enjoyed sewing.

The funeral will be Friday, Aug. 11, from Silas F. Richardson & Son Funeral Home, 106 West St., with a Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Leo's Church, 128 Main St. Burial will be in St. Leo's Cemetery. Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 10, in the funeral home.

Israel Bass, 81

Sunday, August 6, 2000

WORCESTER -- Israel Bass, 81, of 16 Brookside Ave., a warehouse manager, died Saturday, Aug. 5, at UMass Memorial Medical Center -- Memorial Campus.

He leaves his wife of 54 years, Lillian (Slonimsky) Bass; two daughters, Benita Rotman of Worcester and Nancy Bass of Randolph; a sister, Gertrude Rothstein of Worcester; and two grandchildren. He was born in Worcester, son of Benjamin and Lena (Shapiro) Bass, and was a lifelong resident. He was a graduate of Commerce High School

Mr. Bass was a warehouse manager at Ideal Paper Supply Co. for 30 years, retiring in 1991. He was a member of Shaarai Torah Synagogue West, Beth Judah-Young Israel Synagogue, the Jewish Community Center and was a contributing member of the Worcester Jewish Federation. He was a member and an active volunteer for the Jewish Service Center for Older Adults and was a life member of the Jewish Healthcare Center.

The funeral service will be held Sunday, Aug. 6, in Perlman Funeral Home, 1026 Main St. Burial will be in Holy Society Cemetery in Leicester. Memorial observance will be held through Friday morning at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Rotman, 156 Richmond Ave. Memorial contributions may be made to the Shaarai Torah Synagogue West, 835 Pleasant St., Worcester, MA 01602.

Norman L. Bastien, 79

MARLBORO -- Norman L. Bastien, 79, of Marlboro, former foreman of the water department, died Sunday, August 6, at Westridge Healthcare Center, after a long struggle with cancer.

His wife, Kathleen Doris (McDonough) Bastien, died in 1991. He leaves a son, Francis Bastien of Worcester; two daugters, Patricia Gaucher of Marlboro and Susan Bernard of Fitchburg; a sister, Doris Lepore of Hudson; grandchildren; and his close companion, Shirley Perry of Berlin. He was born in Marlboro, son of Francis Bastien and Lena (Gaucher) Bastien, and was a lifelong resident the city. He was an Army veteran of World War II serving as a machinist.

Mr. Bastien worked for the city of Marlboro for more than thirty years, retiring in 1983 as a foreman of the water department. He was a member of St. Mathias Parish and the American Legion Akroyd Houde Post 132, and was also active for many years with the Marlboro Little League Association.

A prayer service will be held at 9:15 on Tuesday, August 8, in the Slattery Funeral Home, Inc., 40 Pleasant St., followed by a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Mathias Church, 409 Hemenway St., Marlboro. There are no calling hours. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Notre Dame Cemetery, Worcester. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Dana Farber's Jimmy Fund Tribute Program, 1 Harvard St., Brookline, MA 02146-9795.

Rita E. Battista, 80

SHREWSBURY -- Rita E. (Boliver) Battista, 80, of 363 South Quinsigamond Ave., a retired bookkeeper, died Tuesday, Aug. 9, in UMass Memorial Medical Center -- University Campus, Worcester, after an illness.

Her husband, Domenic J. Battista, died in 1984. She leaves two sons, Barry J. Battista of Springfield and Frederic J. Battista of Atlanta; a daughter, Carole A. Gawronski of Blackstone; a sister, Mary Doleretta, of Sisters of Providence, of Holyoke; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. A daughter, Diane Battista, died before her. She was born in Worcester, daughter of Lawrence and Regina (Murray) Boliver, and moved to Shrewsbury in 1951. She graduated from a Worcester high school.

Mrs. Battista was a bookkeeper at Worcester State Hospital before retiring. She previously worked in the water department for the City of Worcester. She taught art in adult education programs at Doherty and Shrewsbury high schools, and also in her own studio for many years.

She was a member of St. Anne's Church and its Golden Age Club, the Knights of Columbus Senior Citizens Club, the Shrewsbury Grange, the Northboro Art Guild, and the National Society of Tole & Decorative Painters. She was a charter member of Yankee Heritage Tole Chapter, and gave lessons in a craft store in Shrewsbury.

The funeral will be held Saturday, Aug. 12, from Mercadante Funeral Home & Chapel, 370 Plantation St., Worcester, with a Mass at noon in St. Anne's Church, 130 Boston Turnpike. After cremation, burial will be at the family's convenience. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 11, in the funeral home.

Ann Bayrouty, 81

WORCESTER -- Ann (Mitchell) Bayrouty, 81, of Stonehouse Lane, a former stitcher, died Friday, Aug. 11, at home after an illness.

Her husband of 51 years, Fred A. Bayrouty, died in 1991. She leaves a son, Richard M. Bayrouty of Worcester; a daughter, Patricia A. Nimer of Miami; a brother, Dr. John Mitchell of Gorham, Maine; three sisters, Helen Shabman of Waterford, Conn., Lillian Forzley of Riverside, Conn., and Lorraine Husson of Miami; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. She was born in Worcester, daughter of Nassif and Angelina (Rizkalla) Mitchell, and graduated from Commerce High School in 1937.

Mrs. Bayrouty was a stitcher for Comfort Products for many years.

She was a member of St. George Orthodox Cathedral and its Women's Club. She enjoyed cooking.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 14, in St. George Orthodox Cathedral, 30 Anna St. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery. Calling hours are 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 13, in Nordgren, Carrigan, Mangsen Memorial Chapel, 300 Lincoln St., and 10:30 to 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 14, in the cathedral. A Trisagion service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 13, in the funeral home. Please omit flowers. Donations may be made to St. George Orthodox Cathedral, Memorial Fund; or St. George Orthodox Cathedral, Antiochian Village Campers Fund, both 30 Anna St., Worcester, MA 01604.

Marjorie C. Beal, 94

LITTLETON -- Marjorie C. (Carson) Beal, 94, of 191 Foster St., formerly of Leominster and Framingham, died Tuesday, Aug. 8, in Life Care Center of Nashoba Valley after an illness.

Her husband, Gordon Falk Beal, died in 1997. She leaves a nephew, Charles S. Carson of Indian Harbor, Fla.; and a niece, Carol Carson Joseloff of Newington, Conn. She was born in Chicago, daughter of Charles B. and Augusta (Smith) Carlson, and lived in Bronxville, N.Y., Leominster and many years in Framingham before moving to Littleton several months ago. She graduated from Drexel University and attended the University of Pennsylvania, both in Philadelphia.

Mrs. Beal was the librarian at the Public Library in Narbeth, Pa., for many years.

She collected Native American crafts and enjoyed animals.

The funeral service and burial will be private. There are no calling hours. Please omit flowers. Memorial donations may be made to Buddy Dog Humane Society, 151 Boston Post Road, Sudbury, MA 01776; or to Perkins Institute for the Blind, 175 North Beacon St., Watertown, MA 02172. Silas F. George L. Beals, 49

SPOTSYLVANIA, Va. -- George L. Beals, 49, of Spotsylvania, formerly of Southboro, Mass., a farmer, died Tuesday, Aug. 8, at home.

He leaves his wife, Anne M. Beals; two sons, Jonas W. and Thomas H. Beals, both of Spotsylvania; his parents, Philip C. and Elaine W. Beals of Southboro, Mass.; a brother, Whitney A. Beals of Southboro; three sisters, Susan Sargent of Washington, D.C., Molly Millman of Cambridge, Mass., and Nancy Donaldson of Lincoln Centre, Mass.; nephews and nieces. He was born in Boston and was raised in Southboro. He graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy in 1969 and from Middlebury (Vt.) College in 1973.

Mr. Beals was a farmer and operated Oakley Farm. He was past president of the Virginia Soil & Water Conservation Districts, and a former member of the Spotsylvania Co. Planning Commission.

The memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, at the Beals residence, 10000 Corbin Lane. Burial will be private. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to George Beals Conservation Leadership Fund, c/o VASWCD, 7293 Hanover Green Drive, Suite B101, Mechanicsville, VA 23111. Johnson Funeral Home, 31440 Constitution Highway, Locust Grove, is directing arrangements.
