William Considine, 95; official at R.I. brewery

Friday, August 11, 2000

NARRAGANSETT, R.I. -- William P. Considine, the driving force behind the old Narragansett Brewing Co. whose salesmanship turned the jingle “Hi, neighbor -- have a 'Gansett” into a New England anthem, died Tuesday at the age of 94.

Considine had no college education and lost his inheritance in the 1929 stock market crash, but used his good business sense and unwavering work ethic to rise through the ranks of Narragansett Brewing Co.

During his 35 years with the company, where he began as a salesman and rose to vice president, Narragansett was the best-selling beer in Rhode Island and once accounted for nearly half the beer sales in New England.

At one point, Narragansett sold 1.5 million barrels of beer a year. The brewery closed in 1981.

Considine originated the king-sized bottle and giant imperial quart that later became common throughout the brewing industry.

Considine was a longtime friend of the late Sen. John O. Pastore, former Gov. J. Joseph Garrahy, and industrialist Royal Little, who founded Textron Corp.

As a child in 1914, Considine lived next door to George Herman “Babe” Ruth, who was playing for the Providence Grays. Considine would relate how the future baseball icon would walk him hand-in-hand to the ballpark and get him seated before games started.

Considine leaves two sons, William P. Considine Jr. of South Kingstown and Robert L. Considine of Narragansett, and five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The funeral and burial will be private.
