WEST BROOKFIELD -- Irene B. (Howe) Bacon, 85, of Winter Street, a retired braider, died at home Tuesday, Jan. 16.

Her husband, Gerald C. Bacon, died in 1974. She leaves two daughters, Barbara J. Smith and Margaret Kopec, both of West Brookfield; a brother, Raymond J. Howe Jr. of Wildwood, Fla.; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; many nieces and nephews. A sister, Ruth Zemba of Sun Valley, Calif., died in 1988; another sister, Marie Dowd of Worcester, died in 1995. She was born in Worcester, daughter of Raymond J. Sr. and Esmerelda (Beliveau) Howe, and attended Commerce High School in Worcester.

Mrs. Bacon was a braider for 33 years for the Gavitt Wire & Cable Co. in Brookfield before retiring in 1982. She was a member of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church and was an original member of its Ladies Guild.

The funeral service will be private and will be held at the family's convenience. Burial will be in Sacred Heart of Jesus Cemetery. There are no calling hours. Varnum Funeral Home, 43 East Main St., is directing arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to VNA Hospice of Western New England, Inc., 50 Maple St., PO Box 9058, Springfield, MA 01102-9058, or to West Brookfield Rescue Squad, Inc., PO Box 540, West Brookfield, MA 01585.

James Coggins Jr., 61

SUFFIELD, Conn. -- James F. Coggins Jr., 61, of Suffield, formerly of Worcester, Mass., a retired managing director, died Thursday, Jan. 11, in St. Francis Hospital, Hartford.

He leaves his wife, Norann (O'Connor) Coggins; three sons, James F. III and Michael P. Coggins, both of New York City, and John J. Coggins of Enfield; two daughters, Teresa C. Brady of New York City and Catherine M. Coggins of Boston; a sister, Barbara Eames of Worcester; nephews and nieces. He was born in Worcester and lived 30 years in Suffield. He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War.

Mr. Coggins worked 33 years for CIGNA, retiring as managing director of investments in 1998. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church, the board of the Emergency Aid Association, and the Suffield Zoning Board of Appeals. He volunteered with the Enfield Food Shelf.

The funeral will be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16, from Nicholson & Carmon Funeral Home, 443 East St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church, 446 Mountain Road. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Monday, Jan. 15, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Emergency Aid Association, 450 South St.; or Suffield Volunteer Ambulance Association, PO Box 642, both Suffield, CT 06078.

A. Leo Cournoyer, 73

SPENCER -- A. Leo Cournoyer, 73, of 48 Cherry St., a retired supervisor, died Thursday, April 5, in St. Vincent Hospital at Worcester Medical Center after an illness.

He leaves his wife of eight years, Joanne I. (Pontbriand) Cournoyer; two sons, David M. Cournoyer of Dennis and Daniel L. Cournoyer of Spencer; a daughter, Susan M. Anderson of Spencer; two sisters, Theresa L. Kowal and Rosa C. Dionne, both of Spencer; a stepson, Kevin Rockwood of North Brookfield; two stepdaughters, Mary Jo Hevy of North Brookfield and Robin Rockwood of Marlboro; 10 grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; nephews and nieces. His first wife, Mary Ann (Bouley) Cournoyer, died in 1991. Two brothers, Norman W. and Raymond E. Cournoyer, and a sister, Edna C. Latour, all of Spencer, also predeceased him. Born in Spencer, son of Wilfred J. and Celina B. (Jette) Cournoyer, he graduated from David Prouty High School. He was a Korean War Army veteran.

Mr. Cournoyer was a supervisor 32 years for Wyman-Gordon Co., Worcester, retiring in 1990. He was a member of St. Mary's Church; a former member and past treasurer of Spencer Knights of Columbus Council 118; participated for 15 years with the Spencer Toys for Tots; and was a former Spencer Little League coach.

The funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 7, in St. Mary's Church, 60 Maple St. Burial will be in Mary, Queen of the Rosary Cemetery. Calling hours are private. Please omit flowers. Verna M. Decker, 91

WORCESTER -- Verna M. (Hupman) Decker, 91, of 34 Marland Road, died Wednesday, April 11, at home after an illness.

Her husband, Rupert S. Decker, died in 1991. She leaves a son, David S. Decker Sr. of Dayton, Ohio; a daughter, Carol A. Page, with whom she lived; three grandchildren; a nephew and two nieces. She was born in East Side of Ragged Island, Nova Scotia, daughter of Freedman W. and Eudella B. (Decker) Hupman, and was raised in Nova Scotia. She lived here 61 years.

Mrs. Decker worked at Denholm and McKay Department Store. She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and the Rebecca Lodge.

The funeral service will be private in Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to VNA Care Hospice Inc., 120 Thomas St., Worcester, MA 01608.

WEBSTER -- The funeral for Josephine (Kuszewski) Gromelski, 89, of 745 School St., will be held Saturday, Jan. 20, from Sitkowski & Malboeuf Funeral Home, 340 School St., with a Mass at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph Basilica, 53 Whitcomb St. Mrs. Gromelski died Wednesday, Jan. 17, in Webster Manor Nursing Home after an illness. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. A calling hour is 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, in the funeral home. Among her relatives, she leaves a daughter-in-law, Magdalen J. Gromelski of Webster, who was her caretaker.

Robert Marchand, 62

Elizabeth Reardon, 62

MEREDITH, N.H. -- Elizabeth M. (Frieh) Reardon, 62, of 20 True Road, formerly of 3 Mount Auburn St. in Hopkinton, Mass., and formerly of Milford, Mass., a retired clerk, died Friday, Jan. 12, in Lakes Region General Hospital, Laconia, after a long illness.

Her husband, George J. Sullivan Jr., died in April. She leaves a son, Richard C. Reardon of Meredith; two daughters, Sheryl A. Reardon-Wright of Hopkinton and Nancy Shepard of Worcester, Mass.; two grandchildren; nephews and nieces. She was born in Milford, daughter of Carl G. and Bessie (Thompson) Frieh, and lived in Hopkinton before moving to Meredith two years ago. She graduated from Hopkinton High School in 1957.

Mrs. Reardon was a clerk for 30 years at Holliston Cleaners, retiring about 10 years ago.

The funeral will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17, from Edwards Memorial Funeral Home, 44 Congress St., Milford, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Winter Street, Milford. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Medway. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16, in the funeral home. Gail P. Shea, 55

HUBBARDSTON -- Gail P. (Raymond) Shea, 55, of 47 Healdville Road, an accountant, died Saturday, Jan. 13, in her home after an illness.

She leaves her husband, Michael J. Shea; a son, Matthew P. Oreto of Oxford, England; two daughters, Vicki A. Oreto and Stefanie J. Oreto, both of Worcester; a sister, Elisa M. Newton of Rutland; six grandchildren and several nephews and nieces. A brother, Paul Raymond of Somerville, died in 1971. She was born in Boston, daughter of Philip and Ruby (Reid) Raymond. She received an associate degree in accounting from the Central New England College.

Mrs. Shea was an accountant at the Norton Co. for 26 years.

The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17, at Fay Brothers Funeral Home, 9 Hammond St., Worcester. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Worcester. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to VNA Hospice, 120 Thomas St., Worcester, 01608.

Dolores A. Tonelli, 70

WORCESTER -- Dolores A. (Chioda) Tonelli, 70, of 84 Orient St., died Tuesday, Jan. 9, in St. Vincent Hospital at Worcester Medical Center.

Her husband of 48 years, Norman R. Tonelli, died in 1996. She leaves three sons, Norman P. Tonelli of West Brookfield, Mark F. Tonelli of Shrewsbury, and Paul M. Tonelli of Grafton; a brother, Joseph Chioda of Douglas; a sister, Rita R. Parmenter of Worcester; eight grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was born in Worcester, daughter of Joseph and Raphael (Russo) Chioda.

Mrs. Tonelli worked 38 years for Come Play Products, retiring as a production manager in 1991.

She was a member of Our Lady of Loreto Church, and enjoyed bingo. She was past president of the Mothers Club of the Friendly House.

The funeral will be held Thursday, Jan. 11, from Louis Fazio & Sons Funeral Home, 9 Branch St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Loreto Church, 33 Massasoit Road. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. Calling hours are from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10, in the funeral home. Please omit flowers.

Mary E. Wentzell, 83

MARLBORO -- Mary E. Wentzell, 83, a resident of Westridge Healthcare Center and a retired shoe company worker, died Friday, Jan. 12, in the center.

She leaves a sister, Jean C. Dorchester of Marlboro; nephews and nieces. She was born in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, daughter of George A. and Mary M. (Zinck) Wentzell, and lived most of her life in the Marlboro-Hudson area.

Miss Wentzell worked at Curtis Shoe Co. before retiring. She was a member of Marlboro Methodist Church and the Marlboro Senior Citizens. She enjoyed bingo and participated in craft activities at Westridge Healthcare Center.

The funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 15, in Merrill-Carleton Funeral Home, 1 Pleasant St., Hudson. The committal service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16, in Maplewood Cemetery. Calling hours are 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 15, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Westridge Healthcare Center Activities Fund, 121 Northboro Road, Marlboro, MA 01752.

Susan G. Williams, 39

WORCESTER -- Susan G. (Wenho) Williams, 39, of Worcester, formerly of 214 East Mountain St., a retired clerical worker, died Monday, Jan. 8, in UMass Memorial Medical Center -- University Campus.

She leaves a son, Jason A. Williams of Worcester; two daughters, Melissa and Katherine Williams, both of Worcester; her father, William A. Wenho of Worcester; a brother, John W. Wenho of Worcester; and two sisters, Jean A. Holbrook of Worcester and Ellen I. O'Hara of Graniteville, Vt. She was born in Worcester, daughter of Estelle (Maguire) Wenho.

Mrs. Williams was a clerical worker at Faith House before retiring.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12, in Nordgren, Carrigan, Mangsen Memorial Chapel, 300 Lincoln St. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery. A calling hour is noon to 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12, in the funeral home.

Robert D. Wykes, 72

HOLDEN -- Robert D. Wykes, 72, of 152 South Main St., a retired construction company worker, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, in UMass Memorial Medical Center -- Memorial Campus, Worcester.

He leaves his wife, Sheila D. (Dickman) Wykes; five sons, David Wykes of Germany, Robert and Roger Wykes, both of Worcester, Riaan Wykes of Lynn and Gerald Wykes of New York; three daughters, Susan Collinge of Blackpool, England, Katharine Wykes of Lytham-St. Annes, England, and Carolyn Duenes of Missouri; a brother, Philip Wykes of Shrewsbury; grandchildren, nephews and nieces. He was born in Rotherham, England, son of Joseph and Lily (Morris) Wykes, and lived in Canada and Worcester before moving to Holden in 1988.

Mr. Wykes worked 28 years at Morgan Construction Co. in Worcester, retiring as vice president of engineering in 1990.

He was a member of St. George's Church, the Greendale Retired Men's Club, and the Morgan Retirees Club, all in Worcester. He was former treasurer of the Worcester Regional Alliance for Mental Health in Worcester. He volunteered at the Ecotarium in Worcester.

The funeral will be held Saturday, Jan. 20, from Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., with a Mass at 11 a.m. in St. George's Church, 38 Brattle St., Worcester. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. A calling hour is 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Central Massachusetts Alliance for the Mentally Ill, Worcester, MA 01608.

Alexander J. Kapulka Sr.

WORCESTER -- Alexander J. “Joe” Kapulka Sr., 48, of 21 Lamar Ave., died Monday, Jan. 22, in UMass Memorial Medical Center -- Memorial Campus after a long illness.

He leaves his wife of 31 years, Debora (Quinn) Kapulka; three sons, Alexander “Jo-Jo”Kapulka, Alan and Jonathan Kapulka, all of Worcester; his mother, Mary E. (Murphy) Kapulka of Oxford; two brothers, Anthony D. and William Kapulka, both of Worcester; two sisters, Mary Ann Richard of Oxford and Barbara J. Fikucki of Leicester; two granddaughters; nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He was born in Worcester, son of Anthony C. Kapulka, and attended Worcester Boys Trade High School.

Mr. Kapulka was a kiln operator at Washington Mills Abrasives Co. in Grafton for 14 years, retiring in 1995 because of illness. He was a former altar server at St. Paul's Cathedral.

The funeral will be held Thursday, Jan. 25, from the Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, 353 Grove St. After cremation, burial will be private. Calling hours are from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, in the funeral home.

Raymond Kenary, 80

BARRE -- Raymond V. Kenary, 80, of 256 Worcester Road, formerly of Tampa, Fla., a retired engineer, died Thursday, Jan. 18, in Integrated Health Systems, Worcester.

He leaves his wife of 54 years, Alice E. (Ford) Kenary; a son, Kevin P. Kenary, with whom he lived; a brother, Herbert F. Kenary of Woronoco; two sisters, Dorothy Bourassa of Tampa and Angela O'Connor of Silver Spring, Md.; several nephews and nieces. A brother, Philip J. Kenary of Worcester, predeceased him. He was born in Worcester, son of Vincent M.A. and Agnes (Bruso) Kenary, and lived 12 years in Tampa before returning to the area more than a year ago. He graduated from South High School in Worcester, and attended the University of Connecticut.

Mr. Kenary was an engineer for the city department of public works, retiring in 1970. He was previously a state engineer for the state highway department, and worked for Pratt & Whitney and Wyman-Gordon Co. during World War II. He had been a real estate broker with Dick Warrens Associates of Auburn.

He was a member of Alhambra Council Knights of Columbus, and the Retired State, County and Municipal Employees Association.

The funeral will be held Tuesday, Jan. 23, from O'Connor Brothers Funeral Home, 592 Park Ave., Worcester, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of the Angels Church, 1222 Main St. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 22, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity.
