Helen T. Hakala, 83

Saturday, January 27, 2001

WORCESTER -- Helen T. (Grabowski) Hakala, 83, formerly of 40 Belmont St., a retired stitcher, died Thursday, Jan. 25, in Hermitage Nursing Home after an illness.

Her husband, Eero A. Hakala, died in 1970. She leaves three sisters, Dorothy Croteau and Theresa Sears, both of Worcester, and Ann Lindberg of Shrewsbury; nephews and nieces. She was born in Worcester, daughter of Matthew and Frances (Borick) Grabowski.

Mrs. Hakala was a stitcher at Worcester Woven Labels Co. before retiring. She was a former member of Our Lady of Czestochowa Parish.

The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, in Henry Funeral Home, 33 Ward St. Burial will be private in St. John's Cemetery. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Jewish Family Services, 646 Salisbury St., Worcester, MA 01609.

Robert W. Hanson, 82

SHREWSBURY -- Robert W. Hanson, 82, formerly of 12 Wheelock Road, a former route salesman, died Tuesday, Jan. 30, in St. Francis Home, Worcester.

His wife, Mabel E. (Carlson) Hanson, died in 1959. He leaves two sons, Robert A. Hanson of Auburn and Jon S. Hanson of Holden; a daughter, Karla A. Hanson of Worcester; five sisters, Georgina L'Homme of Indiana, Blanche Richards of Shrewsbury, Jeannette Goulden of North Oxford, Martha Walker of Charlton, and Hazel James of the Rochdale section of Leicester; six grandchildren; nephews and nieces. Two brothers, Earl and Russell Hanson, and a sister, Shirley Rankin, predeceased him. He was born in Malden, son of Russell and Carlotta (Bartholomew) Hanson, and lived about 50 years in Shrewsbury. He graduated from Commerce High School, Worcester.

Mr. Hanson was a route salesman for several local bakeries. He was a charter member of Mount Olivet Lutheran Church and the Teamsters Union Local 170. He enjoyed sports, particularly baseball.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, in Mount Olivet Lutheran Church, 34 Prospect St. Burial will be in All Faiths Cemetery, Worcester. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, in Caswell-King Funeral Home, 474 Grove St., Worcester. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mount Olivet Youth Ministry, c/o Mount Olivet Lutheran Church, 34 Prospect St., Shrewsbury, MA 01545.

Mildred H. Hardy, 73

LUNENBURG -- Mildred H. (Flinkstrom) Hardy, 73, of 131 White St., died Monday, Jan. 29, at Keystone Nursing Home, Leominster, after an illness.

Her husband of 28 years, Walter R. Hardy, died in 1975. She leaves two sons, William W. Hardy of Lunenburg and Wayne R. Hardy of Winchendon; a daughter, June M. Mackey of Greenville, N.H.; a sister, Edna M. Jamnback of Ashby; eight grandchildren; one great-grandson; nephews and nieces. Two brothers, John and Walter Flinkstrom, predeceased her. She was born in Ashby, daughter of John and Hilma E. (Mattila) Flinkstrom, and lived in New Ipswich, N.H. and Fitchburg, before moving to Lunenburg in 1992.

Mrs. Hardy was an inspector at Plating Innovations, Fitchburg, retiring in 1992. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting and cooking.

The funeral service and burial will be at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Keystone Nursing Home, 44 Keystone Drive, Leominster, MA 01453. Bosk Funeral Home, 85 Blossom St., Fitchburg, is directing arrangements.

Nettie Hargrove, 86

WORCESTER -- Nettie (Noel) Hargrove, 86, formerly of 316 Lake Ave., died Oct. 25, 2000, at home in Gallinas, N. M. Funeral arrangements, under the direction of Caswell-King Funeral Home, 474 Grove St., are incomplete.

Philip L. Harmon, 72

BOYLSTON -- Philip L. Harmon, 72, of Boylston, died Saturday, Feb. 3, in the Windsor Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, South Yarmouth.

He leaves a sister, Marion Garland of Dennisport; and two nieces, Linda Garland of Dennis and Laura Garland of Foster City, Calif. Born in Boylston, son of Carl and Catherine (Shirley) Harmon, he lived there until moving last month to South Yarmouth to be near his family.

Mr. Harmon was very active in the local community. He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Boylston, the Boylston Lions Club, the Boylston Senior Citizens, and the Greendale Men's Club. He also served as grand marshal of the 1993 Fourth of July parade in Boylston.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, in the First Congregational Church of Boylston, 4 Church St. Burial will be private. Memorial donations may be made to the First Congregational Church, 4 Church St., or to the Boylston Lion's Club Charities, PO Box 50, both Boylston, MA 01505. Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Ave., South Yarmouth, is directing arrangements.

Richard C. Harvey Sr.

YUBA CITY, Calif. -- Richard C. Harvey Sr., 70, of Yuba City, formerly of Sudbury, Mass., Marlboro, Mass., and Framingham, Mass., a retired paper company worker and a veteran of World War II, died Thursday, Feb. 1, at home, after a long battle with cancer.

He leaves his wife, Colleen (Rodrick) Harvey; five sons, Walter Madore of Chino, Herald D. Madore in Pennsylvania, Richard C. Harvey Jr. of Marlboro, Gary A. Harvey of Berlin, Mass. and Mark S. Harvey of Worcester, Mass.; two daughters, Carol A. Timmons of Columbus, Ohio, and Allison J. Harvey of Las Vegas; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His first wife, Ruby P. (Baker) Harvey, and a son, Michael A. Madore of Mississippi, predeceased him. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Mr. Harvey worked for Simpson's Paper Co. before his retirement. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and traveling.

The funeral service and burial will be held in California.

Irene M. Hayden, 92

ATHOL -- Irene M. (Ferguson) Hayden, 92, of 141 Lake Ellis Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 30, at home.

Her husband, Howard M. Hayden, died in 1974. She leaves a son, Thomas F. Hayden of Athol; two daughters, Dorothy E. Hayden of Royalston and Mary M. Wheeler of Phillipston; a granddaughter. She was born in Worcester, daughter of Peter and Elizabeth (Howard) Ferguson, and graduated from Classical High School in Worcester. She lived nearly 60 years in Athol.

Mrs. Hayden was a member of Our Lady Immaculate Church and its Catholic Women's League. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Athol Hospital Auxiliary, and the Friends of the Athol Public Library.

She was an accomplished artist, and enjoyed oil painting, embroidery and crocheting.

The funeral will be held Friday, Feb. 2, from J. Edward Murphy Funeral Home, 137 Main St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady Immaculate Church, 192 School St. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Legion Auxiliary, c/o Marguerite Langlois, 9 Frye Hill Road, Royalston, MA 01368 or Our Lady Immaculate Church Building Fund, 192 School St., Athol, MA 01331.

Richard A. Hazard, 70, and Shirley Hazard, 64

PLEASANTVILLE, N.J. -- Richard A. and Shirley (Ross) Hazard, of 300 Wellington Ave., formerly of Worcester, Mass., were found dead at home Thursday, Jan. 18.

Mr. Hazard, 70, leaves two brothers, Lewis Hazard of Worcester and Michael Hazard of Rhode Island; three sisters, Ruth Webber of New Jersey, Alma Brown of Worcester, and Persis Stanton of Rhode Island. Six brothers, Charles U., William, Tower, David, George and Joe Hazard, and four sisters, Marjorie Prince, Muriel Shepard, Lucy Waller and Martha Best, predeceased him.

Mrs. Hazard, 64, leaves four brothers, Samuel, Kingston, Richard and Calvin R. Ross, all of Pennsylvania, and three sisters, Esther Wright, Doris Hazard and Loretta Brown, all of Colorado.

Together, they leave two sons, Michael Hazard of Pleasantville and Gary Hazard Sr. of Silver City, N.C.; three daughters, Sharon Hazard-Johnson of Mays Landing, Helen M. Copeland of Egg Harbor Township, and Shirley R. Hazard of Las Vegas; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces.

Mr. Hazard was born in Worcester, son of Charles S. and Ruth (Dominis) Hazard. He served 26 years in the Navy, retiring in 1973. He later worked for Atlantic Electric Co., and was a member of IBEW Local 210. He retired in 1990.

Mrs. Hazard was born in Philadelphia, daughter of Kingston and Helen (Collier) Ross. She worked 29 years at the Pleasantville Post Office, retiring in 1998. She later worked for Boscov's Department Store.

The Hazards were married 46 years.

The memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, in O'Connor Brothers Funeral Home, 592 Park Ave., Worcester. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Richard and Shirley Hazard Grandchildren Educational Scholarship, PO Box 232, Pleasantville, NJ 08232.

Ethel S. Hibbert, 92

NORTH ANDOVER -- Ethel S. (Monroe) Hibbert, 92, formerly of 34.5 Maple Ave., died Tuesday, Jan. 30, in Oakdale Rehabilitation and Skilled Care Center in West Boylston.

Her husband, Samuel Hibbert, died in 1971. She leaves two daughters, including Ethel Zocco of Shrewsbury; six sisters; a brother; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Hibbert worked at the Tyer Rubber Co., Hardy Brush Co. of Shawsheen, and the Andover schools cafeteria system. She later designed silk floral arrangements for weddings.

The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, in the Dewhirst and Conte Funeral Home, 17 Third St., North Andover. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery. Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, in the funeral home. Donations may be made to the North Andover Fire Department, 32 North Main St., Andover, MA 01810.

Ella A. Hixon, 97

HOPEDALE -- Ella A. (Springer) Hixon, 97, of Greensboro, N.C., formerly of Green Street, died Wednesday, Jan. 31, in Countryside Manor Nursing Home in Stokesdale, N.C.

Her husband of 60 years, Arthur M. Hixon, predeceased her. She leaves a son, Wesley F. Hixon of Greensboro, N.C., with whom she recently lived; two sisters, Hester M. Chilson of Hopedale and Sadie B. Whiting of Stuart, Fla.; two granddaughters; two great-granddaughters; nephews and nieces. She was born in Milford, daughter of Francis W. and Sarah E. (Finlay) Springer, and lived in Milford and Mendon before moving to Hopedale in 1923.

Mrs. Hixon was a longtime member of Unitarian-Universalist Church of Milford and its Mispar Club and Ladies Aid. She was a former member of Hopedale Community Chorus.

The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, in Buma-Sargeant Funeral Home, 42 Congress St., Milford. Burial will be in Hopedale Village Cemetery. There are no public calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Visiting Nurse Association of the Greater Milford-Northbridge Area Inc., 1 Emerson St., PO Box 8, Mendon, MA 01757; or to Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Association, 36 Cameron Ave., Cambridge, MA 02140.

Elsie A. Hofstra, 90

SOUTHBRIDGE -- Elsie A. Hofstra, 90, of Sayles Street, a retired school system worker, died Thursday, Feb. 1, in The Meadows of Leicester after an illness.

She leaves a brother, Robert J. Hofstra of Brockport, N.Y.; nephews and nieces. A brother, William Hofstra, and a sister, Emma Hofstra, predeceased her. She was born in Southbridge, daughter of William and Annie (Ritchie) Hofstra.

Mrs. Hofstra worked 40 years for the Southbridge School System, retiring in 1971. She then worked for Bay Path Regional Vocational Technical High School, Charlton. She was a member and treasurer of Elm Street Congregational Church. She was a past Noble Grand of the Rebeccas.

The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 4, in Elm Street Congregational Church, Elm and Park streets. A calling period is 1 to 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 4, in Belanger-Bullard Funeral Home, 51 Marcy St.

Lindalee M. Houck, 48

LEOMINSTER -- Lindalee M. (Michel) Houck, 48, of 51 Crawford St., died Sunday, Jan. 28, in HealthAlliance Leominster Hospital after being stricken ill at home.

She leaves her husband of 26 years, Anthony W. Houck; a son, Wayne J. Houck of Leominster; a grandchild. She was born in Fitchburg, daughter of Philip and Yvonne (LeBlanc) Michel, and lived many years in Fitchburg and Leominster. She graduated from Leominster High School in 1970.

Mrs. Houck was a bus driver for Laidlaw Co. in Fitchburg.

There are no funeral services planned. Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 31, in Wright-Roy Funeral Home, 109 West St. After cremation, burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Fitchburg.

Theron W. Hunter, 90

ATHOL -- Theron W. Hunter, 90, of 116 Houghton St., Worcester, formerly of Athol, died Wednesday, Jan. 24, at Blair House, Worcester, after a long illness.

He leaves two cousins, Phyllis M. Shaw and John S. Hunter, both of Athol. He was born in Athol, and graduated from Athol High School.

Mr. Hunter served two years in the Army. After being injured during his military service, he lived at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Northampton, for more than 40 years. He lived at Blair House since 1988.

A private graveside service will be in Silver Lake Cemetery. There are no calling hours. Higgins-O'Connor Funeral Home, 146 Main St., is directing arrangements.
