George K. Shadbegian

WESTBORO -- George K. Shadbegian, 95, of 5 Colonial Drive, died May 31 in Westboro Healthcare.

His wife, Margaret (Caranci) Shadbegian, died several years ago. He leaves a son, David Shadbegian of Worcester; and two grandchildren. A son, Richard Caranci Shadbegian of Worcester, died several years ago. He was born in Worcester, son of John and Hayganoosh (Krikorian) Shadbegian. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in Europe and Africa.

He was a laborer for the city of Worcester many years ago.

The funeral service and burial, in Hope Cemetery, Worcester, were private. There are no calling hours. Graham, Putnam, Mahoney Funeral Parlor, 838 Main St., directed arrangements.

Rev. Rudolph Masciarelli

BOSTON -- The Rev. Rudolph Masciarelli, 82, an original member of St. James Missionary Society of the Archdiocese of Boston, formerly of Marlboro, died Saturday, Jan. 27, in Regina Cleri Home for retired priests after a long illness.

He leaves four brothers, Rocco Masciarelli of Westboro, Dominic Masciarelli of Milford, Dante and Frank Masciarelli, both of Marlboro; nephews and nieces. A brother, Alberico Masciarelli, died in 2000. He was born in Marlboro, son of Francesco and Caterina (Marulli) Masciarelli. He graduated from Marlboro High School in 1938 and from College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, in 1942.

Rev. Masciarelli taught three years at Wayside School for Boys and Lyman School, and entered St. John's Seminary in 1945. He was ordained a priest in 1949 and served 10 years as associate pastor of St. Mary's Parish, Franklin. In 1959, he joined the group of 15 priests that formed the Missionary Society of St. James and was missioned to Peru, where he served 40 years as pastor, superior and house director of parishes. In 1963, he built St. Francis of Assisi parish, the first Catholic parish in Chimbote, Peru, where he served as pastor. He formerly taught Sunday school at St. Ann's Parish, Marlboro, and was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish, Marlboro, its choir, dramatic club and Legion of Mary. He was a life member of Douglas White Assembly, Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus.

A con-celebrated funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30, in Immaculate Conception Church, 11 Prospect St., Marlboro. His eminence, Cardinal Bernard F. Law, Archbishop of Boston, will be principal celebrant. Burial will be in Immaculate Conception Cemetery. Rev. Masciarelli will lie in state 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 28, in the Chapel of Regina Cleri Home, Cardinal O'Connell Way, and 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 29, in Immaculate Conception Church. Memorial donations may be made to St. James Missionary Society, 24 Clark St., Boston, MA 02109-9923. William R. Short and Son Funeral Home, 95 West Main St., Marlboro, is directing arrangements.

Rex D. Mathews, 80

LUNENBURG -- Rex D. Mathews, 80, of 93 Rolling Acres Road, a military careerman and a veteran of two wars, died Tuesday, Feb. 6, in HealthAlliance Leominster Hospital after an illness.

He leaves his wife of 54 years, Vivian (Ensinger) Mathews; a daughter, Susan M. Courchesne of Merrimack, N.H.; two sisters, Margaret A. Watson of Fort Lynn, Miss., and Eleanor J. Sickles of Cleveland; and two grandchildren. A daughter, E. Anne Mathews, died in 1978. He was born in Springhill, Kan., son of Roy and Marian (Rhinehart) Mathews.

Mr. Mathews was a major in the Army for 22 years, serving during World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of Aurora Lodge of Masons, Fitchburg, and the Retired Officers Association of Worcester. He enjoyed fishing.

The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9, in Brandon-Simard Funeral Home, 305 Wanoosnoc Road, Fitchburg. Burial, with military honors, will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 12, in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne. Calling hours are 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

Helen I. Matthew, 88

BERLIN -- Helen I. (Vandlan) Matthew, 88, of 97 Boylston Road, formerly of the Greendale section of Worcester, a retired nurse, died Saturday, Feb. 3, in the Coachlace Healthcare Nursing Center, Clinton.

Her husband, Andrew B. Matthew, died in 1991. She leaves three sons, Andrew B. Matthew Jr. and Carl J. Matthew, both of Berlin, and David V. Matthew of Grand Island, N.Y.; nine grandchildren; 11 grandchildren; nephews and nieces. She was born in Worcester, daughter of Carl L. and Sigrid P. (Anderson) Vandlan, and moved to Berlin 51 years ago.

Mrs. Matthew was a licensed practical nurse, before retiring. She was a member of the First Parish Church and a 40 year member of the choir. She was also a member of the Day Guild of the church and of the Berlin Tuesday Club. She sang with the Worcester Music Festival Chorus.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Burial will be in the South Cemetery. Calling hours are 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, in the Merrill-Garleton Funeral Home, 1 Pleasant St., Hudson. Please omit flowers. Memorial contributions may be made to the Heifer Project Fund of the First Parish Council, 24 Central St., Berlin MA 01503.

Mary R. Sullivan, 88

WORCESTER -- Mary R. Sullivan, 88, formerly of 101 Chadwick St., a retired physical education teacher, died Friday, Jan. 26, in the Lutheran Home.

She leaves nephews, nieces, grandnephews and grandnieces. Two brothers and two sisters, John P. and Raymond Sullivan, Jane McGinn and Sister Gertrude A. Sullivan, S.N.D., predeceased her. She was born in Worcester, daughter of former Worcester Mayor John S. Sullivan and Margaret (Phelan) Sullivan. She graduated from Boston University.

Miss Sullivan was one of the first women physical education teachers in the Worcester public schools, where she taught more than 25 years. She retired from Burncoat Senior High School. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, and enjoyed traveling.

The funeral will be held Monday, Jan. 29, from Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., with a Mass at noon in Immaculate Conception Church, 353 Grove St. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

John C. Mattus, 94

WORCESTER -- John C. “Jimmy” Mattus, 94, of Yarmouth, Maine, formerly of 21 Duncannon Ave., a retired inspector, died Wednesday, Jan. 31, in Knollwood Nursing Center.

His wife, Clara W. (Swidersky) Mattus, died in 1990. He leaves a daughter, June C. Roy of Yarmouth, Maine, with whom he recently lived; two brothers, Vitty A. Mattus of Worcester and Robert Mattus of Pensacola, Fla.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Three brothers, Theodore Mattus of Worcester, Frank P. Mattus of Grafton and Vincent Mattus of Auburn, predeceased him. He was born in Worcester, son of Pius F. and Mary (Orante) Mattus, and lived in Worcester before moving to Yarmouth, Maine, last year. He was educated in Worcester schools.

Mr. Mattus worked 43 years, most recently as an inspector, at the Worcester Works Division of United States Steel Co., retiring in 1972. He was a longtime member of St. Casimir's Parish, and a member of Lithuanian Social Club, U.S. Steel Retirees Club and United Steelworkers of America Local 1885.

The funeral will be held Saturday, Feb. 3, from Henry Funeral Home, 33 Ward St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Casimir's Church, 41 Providence St. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, in the funeral home. Please omit flowers. Memorial donations may be made to St. Casimir's Church Building Fund, 41 Providence St., Worcester, MA 01604.

Martha L. Matzelle, 83

ATHOL -- Martha L. (Rockwell) Matzelle, 83, of Athol, died Wednesday, Jan. 31, in Athol Memorial Hospital.

Her husband, Joseph Matzelle, predeceased her. She leaves two daughters, Rose Frizzell of Phillipston and Patricia Metz of Florida; a brother, Halcyon Rockwell of Marstons Mills; three sisters, Mary Spicer of Florida, Vivian Williams of New York, and Vera Coghill of Scotland; three grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was born in Newtown, Conn., daughter of Stephen and Elizabeth (Carl) Rockwell.

No funeral service is planned. There are no calling hours. American Cremation Society, 342 Washington St., Haverhill, is directing arrangements.

Mildred M. McCarthy

CINCINNATI -- Mildred M. (Sweeney) McCarthy, of Cincinnati, formerly of Worcester, Mass., a retired nurse, died Saturday, Jan. 20, at home.

Her husband, Alfred F. McCarthy, died in 1986. She leaves two daughters, Carole M. McCarthy, with whom she lived, and Mildred Ellen Gilbert of Auburn, Mass. She was born in Worcester, daughter of Miles and Catherine (Reynolds) Sweeney, and lived 15 years in Cincinnati.

Mrs. McCarthy was a nurse at Providence House, Worcester, before retiring. She previously worked for AT&T. She was a former member of St. Charles Borromeo Church, St. Peter's Church and Blessed Sacrament Church, all in Worcester, and their women's guilds. She was a member of Telephone Pioneers of America.

The funeral will be held Saturday, Jan. 27, from Fay Brothers Funeral Home, 9 Hammond St., Worcester, with a Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Charles Borromeo Church, 341 June St., Worcester. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Worcester. A calling hour is 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, in the funeral home.

Robert H. McCarthy

HAMPDEN -- Robert H. McCarthy, 75, of Springmeadow Lane, formerly of Worcester, a World War II veteran and a former salesman, died Friday, Jan. 26, in a local nursing home.

His wife, Jane G. (Quinn) McCarthy, died in 1997. He leaves four sons, Robert M. McCarthy of Plymouth, Maine, Michael A. McCarthy of East Longmeadow, Paul F. McCarthy of Hampden and Thomas J. McCarthy of Monson; two daughters, Katie Dolan of West Springfield and Jane E. Martin of Ware; a sister, Margaret Rafferty of North Falmouth; and nine grandchildren. He was born in Worcester, and lived the past 44 years in Hampden. He graduated from St. John's High School and College of the Holy Cross in 1950, both in Worcester.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II, attaining the rank of quartermaster third class.

Mr. McCarthy was a salesman 28 years at Rafferty-Brown Steel Co., East Longmeadow. He was a member of St. Mary's Church and was active in forming the town's Little League Baseball, where he was a coach. He was a former member of Hampden Lions Club.

The funeral will be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30, from Hafey East Longmeadow Chapels, 120 Shaker Road, East Longmeadow, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Main Street. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Calling hours are 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 29, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children, 516 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01440; or to World War II Memorial Fund, American Battle Monument Commission, PO Box 98149, Washington, DC 20090-8149.

Loyola M. McCarthy

LEOMINSTER -- Loyola M. (Savage) McCarthy, 78, of 14B Notre Dame St., and Hampton Beach, N.H., a former nursery school owner and nurse's aide, died Saturday, Feb. 3, in University Commons Nursing Home, Worcester, after an illness.

Her husband, Florence T. McCarthy, died in 1983. She leaves a daughter, Constance E. York of Chiefland, Fla.; three stepsons, Paul McCarthy of Dennis, Richard McCarthy of Hudson, and David McCarthy of Manchester, N.H.; a stepdaughter, Margaret McCarthy of Framingham; a brother, Carl Savage of Florida; two sisters, Florence LeBel of Connecticut, and Hazel Mason of Vermont; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. A daughter, Gloria Leger of Worcester, died in 1996. Two brothers, Kenneth and Raymond Savage, and a sister, Idella Mazzerole, also predeceased her. Born in Northern Grand Isle, Vt., daughter of Willie A. and Ethel E. (Way) Savage, she came many years ago to Leominster.

Mrs. McCarthy formerly owned and operated a nursery school in Marlboro. She had also worked as a nurse's aide in the New England area.

She was a member of St. Cecilia's Church, the Friday Knights of Columbus Dance Group, and the Come Alive After 5 Group in Hampton, N.H.

The funeral will be held Tuesday, February 6, from the M.A. Simard and Son Funeral Home, 14 Walker St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Cecilia's Church, 180 Mechanic St. Burial will be in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Marlboro. Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 5, in the funeral home.

Robert McDermott, 65

AUBURN -- Robert J. McDermott, 65, of 751 Washington St., died Monday, Jan. 29, in the Life Care Center of Auburn after a brief illness.

He leaves his wife of 10 years, Joyce A. (Moore) McDermott; three stepsons, Gary and Scott Wilson, both of Oxford, and Dana Wilson of Fayetteville, N.C.; a stepdaughter, Dawn Maurice of Oxford. He was born in Auburn, son of William F. and Lillian J. (Kelley) McDermott, and attended Auburn schools. He served in the Army from 1955 to 1963.

Mr. McDermott was a truck driver 33 years for the Auburn Highway Department, retiring in 1997. He also owned and operated McDermott Pavement Marking Co. for many years.

He was a former member of the Auburn Lodge of Elks.

There are no services or calling hours planned. Burial will be private in Hillside Cemetery. Britton-Wallace Funeral Home, 91 Central St., is directing arrangements.

Francis McGrath, 90; World War II veteran

SHREWSBURY -- Francis “Mac” McGrath, 90, formerly of 10 Washburn St. in Worcester, a World War II veteran and a retired knitting company worker, died Wednesday, Jan. 24, in Shrewsbury Nursing Home after a long illness.

His wife, Mary A. (Tedesco) McGrath, died in 1980. He leaves a son, Anthony N. Tedesco of Shrewsbury; two granddaughters, Gail Roberge and Ann Erickson, both of Shrewsbury; a grandson, Anthony Tedesco of Grafton; four great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. Two brothers, Harry and James McGrath, predeceased him. He was born in Worcester, son of James and Eva (Aussant) McGrath, and lived most of his life in Worcester before moving to Shrewsbury several years ago. He was an Army veteran of World War II, and received the Purple Heart for wounds suffered in the Battle of the Bulge in Europe.

Mr. McGrath worked more than 25 years for Worcester Knitting Co., retiring in 1965.

He was a former member of Sacred Heart Church and a life member of Worcester Chapter 4 Disabled American Veterans.

The funeral, with military honors, will be held Monday, Jan. 29, from Mercadante Funeral Home & Chapel, 370 Plantation St., Worcester, with a Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, 640 Main St. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. A calling hour is 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 29, in the funeral home.

Harold A. Tuttle, 56

WARE -- Harold A. Tuttle, 56, of 25b Park St., a Ware High School custodian, died Sunday, Jan. 28, in Baystate Medical Center, Springfield.

He leaves his wife of 20 years, Ruth (LaValley) Tuttle; a daughter, Debra Taylor of South Carolina; five brothers, Joseph Tuttle of Baldwinville, Wilbrod Tuttle of Ware, Richard and Robert Tuttle, both of Florida, and Roger Tuttle of Virginia; nine sisters, Theresa Kokansky of Barre, Jean Smart of Palmer, Joanne Cherpack of West Warren, Dorothy Miller of Warren, Patricia Cabana, Rose Marie Bourt and Ann Wood, all of Florida, Margaret Mitko of Barre and Carol Dale of North Carolina; six grandchildren. He was born in Ware, son of Virgil and Evelyn (Dansereau) Tuttle.

Mr. Tuttle worked many years as a custodian for Ware public schools. He was a member of Teamsters Local 404.

He was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church and served as its sexton. He was also Ware's Santa Claus for many years.

The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 31, at the Trinity Episcopal Church, Park Street. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Calling hours are from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30, at Charbonneau Funeral Home, 30 Pleasant St. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Trinity Episcopal Church, PO Box 447, Ware, MA 01082.
