DOUGLAS -- Stella M. (Gniadek) Neomany, 84, of 54 North St., died Tuesday, Feb. 6, in Providence Extended Care Center, Worcester, after an illness.

Her husband, Stephen T. Neomany, died in 1991. She leaves a sister, Genevieve R. Jabrocki of Douglas; a grandnephew and a grandniece. A brother, Bennie Gniadek, predeceased her. She was born in Douglas, daughter of Martin and Mary (Broda) Gniadek.

Mrs. Neomany worked at Hayward Woolen Co. She was a member of St. Denis Church and its Catholic Women's Club.

The funeral will be held Friday, Feb. 9, from Jackman Funeral Home, 7 Mechanic St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Denis Church, 23 Manchaug Road. Burial will be in St. Denis Cemetery. There are no calling hours.

Katherine M. Newell

LEOMINSTER -- Katherine M. (McCole) Newell, 87, of 14 Millett Ave., died Sunday, Feb. 4, in River Terrace Health Care Center in Lancaster after a long illness.

Her husband of 48 years, Chester T. Newell, died in 1993. She leaves three daughters, Kathleen M. Patterson of Leominster, Maryalice Hurley of Fitchburg, and Joyce A. Nikitas of Fitchburg; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren. She was born in Elizabeth, N.J., daughter of John and Mary (Norton) McCole, and moved to Leominster in 1945.

Mrs. Newell was secretary many years to the executive director at Montachusett Home Care Corp., retiring in 1986.

She was a member of the Friendly Circle at the Pilgrim Congregational Church.

The funeral service will be held Wednesday, Feb. 7, from Silas F. Richardson & Son Funeral Home, 106 West St., with a Mass at 11:30 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, 49 Woodland St., Fitchburg. Burial will be at a later date in Evergreen Cemetery. Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, in the funeral home. Donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 36 Cameron Ave., Cambridge, MA 02140-1102.

Henry C. Nicholas Jr.

CLINTON -- Henry C. “Hank” Nicholas Jr., 33, of 125 Allen St., died Thursday, Jan. 25, in HealthAlliance Leominster Hospital in Leominster.

He leaves a sister, Diane Wikowski of Fitchburg; and a niece. A brother, Robert H. Nicholas, died in 1999. He was born in Clinton, son of Henry C. Nicholas Sr. and Judith (Palmi) Nicholas, and attended Clinton Schools.

Mr. Nicholas worked at Bob's Turkey Farm in Lancaster.

The funeral service will held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30, in James E. Watson Funeral Home, 149 Water St. Burial will be in Reservoir Pines Cemetery. Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 29, in the funeral home.

Marie E. Nickerson, 84

WORCESTER -- Marie E. (Allard) Nickerson, 84, of 11 Marble St., formerly of 3 Woodbine St., died Friday, Jan. 26, in University Commons Nursing Home.

Her husband, Cyril O. Nickerson, died in 1978. She leaves four sons, William A. Driscoll Jr. of Clemons, N.C., Daniel R. Driscoll of Richmond, Va., Thomas V. Driscoll of Worcester and John E. Driscoll of Milsap, Texas; a brother, George Allard of Northampton; two sisters, Florence Beaucheman of Worcester and Lillian T. Riopel of Leicester; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Her first husband, William A. Driscoll, died in 1964. A son, Robert F. Driscoll of New Jersey, died in 1995. A grandchild died several years ago. She was born in Worcester, daughter of Frank and Mary (Gariepy) Allard, and graduated from Shrewsbury High School.

Mrs. Nickerson was a Payroll Clerk 13 years at the former R.H. White Department Store, retiring in 1980.

She was a former member of St. Andrew The Apostle Parish and its choir. She was also a senior companion at the Age Center of Worcester. She was a member of the Women's Auxiliary of Grafton Hill Post American Legion, and the Woman's Auxiliary of Council 88 Knights of Columbus.

The funeral will be held Wednesday, Jan. 31, from the Morin Funeral Home, 298 Grafton St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Andrew the Apostle Church, 5 Spaulding St. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery. Calling hours are from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Age Center of Worcester, 51 Harvard St., Worcester, MA 01609.

Florina M. Nonni, 85

GARDNER -- Florina M. (Brassard) Nonni, 85, of 32 Hospital Hill Road, formerly of 446 Parker St., a retired upholsterer, died Sunday, Jan. 28, in Wachusett Manor Nursing Home after an illness.

Her husband of 43 years, Paris Nonni, died in 1991. She leaves two sons, Robert J. and Rene Nonni, both of Gardner; a daughter, Charlene M. Gallant of Gardner; a brother, Clo Brassard of Titusville, Fla.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was born in Gardner, daughter of Louis and Albertina (Cote) Brassard.

Mrs. Nonni was an upholsterer for the former Hartshorn Manufacturing Co., retiring in 1963. She previously worked for the former Rousseau Brothers Manufacturing Co.

She was a member of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church and its Ladies of St. Anne Society. She was also a member of the Gardner Golden Agers.

The funeral will be held Wednesday, Jan. 30, from Boucher Funeral Home Inc., 110 Nichols St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, 135 Nichols St. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery. A calling hour will be held from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, in the funeral home. Donations may be made to the Wachusett Manor Activity Fund, 32 Hospital Hill Road, Gardner, MA 01440 or the St. Vincent de Paul Society, Holy Rosary Church, 135 Nichols St., Gardner, MA 01440.

Nancy B. Novick, 92

WORCESTER -- Nancy B. (Yarmalavicz) Novick, 92, of Worcester, formerly of 47 Plantation St., died Sunday, Feb. 4, in St. Vincent Hospital at Worcester Medical Center after a long illness.

Her husband of 50 years, John V. Novick, died in 1983. She leaves a son, William J. Novick of Worcester; two grandchildren, Steven V. Novick of Somerville and Michael W. Novick of Worcester; and a great-grandson. She was born in Nashua, N.H., daughter of Joseph and Mary (Bachanowsky) Yarmalavicz, and lived most of her life in Worcester.

Mrs. Novick was a former member of St. Casimir Church.

The funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, in Our Lady of Loreto Church, 33 Massasoit Road. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery. There are no calling hours. Please omit flowers. Louis Fazio & Sons Funeral Home, 9 Branch St., is directing arrangements.

Robert W. Nye, 82

ROCKVILLE, Md. -- Robert W. Nye, 82, of Rockville, a retired medical photographer, died Thursday, Jan. 18, in the Casey House Hospice.

He leaves his wife of 54 years, Caroline Nye of Rockville; three sons, Roger W. Nye of Milton, Mass., David W. Nye of Stafford, Md., and William R. Nye of Gaithersburg; five daughters, Roberta Ashford of Garland, N.C., Marcia Dustin and Maria Berry, both of Rockville, Suzanne O'Meara of Damascus, Rosemary McCamy of Adamstown; a sister, Frances Nye of San Fransisco; 20 grandchildren. He was born in Albany, N.Y., and was raised in Maine and in Worcester, Mass.

He was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II, serving as a combat motion picture photographer in Okinawa, where he received a Bronze Star. He was also a member of the Marine Corps photographic team at the Bikini Atoll atomic bomb test.

Mr. Nye worked in West Virginia steel mills before moving to Washington in the early 1950s. He was then a medical photographer 20 years for the National Institutes of Health at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Funeral arrangements were held last week in Gaithersburg and Rockville. Burial was private. Donations may be made to Casey House, 6001 Muncaster Mill Road, Rockville, MD 20855. DeVol Funeral Home, 10 East Deer Park Drive, Gaithersburg, directed arrangements.

Eleanor M. Nygren, 85

LEICESTER -- Eleanor M. (Swanson) Nygren, 85, of 462 Pleasant St., died Sunday, Feb. 4, in Providence Extended Care Center in Worcester.

Her husband of 57 years, Wendell R. Nygren, died in 1999. She leaves a daughter, Laurea M. Whiton of Slingerlands, N.Y.; two grandchildren; nieces and nephews. She was born in Hinsdale, Ill., daughter of Robert A. and Ruth (Hedlund) Swanson, and lived in Worcester before moving to Leicester in the 1940s.

Mrs. Nygren was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church in Worcester and its Naomi Circle. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Clara Barton Chapter 63 in Oxford, and was a former member of Spencerian Chapter 126 Eastern Star in Spencer.

The memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, in Epworth United Methodist Church, 64 Salisbury St. Burial will be in All Faiths Cemetery, Worcester, at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Epworth United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 64 Salisbury St., Worcester, MA 01609. Morrison-Morin Funeral Home, 1131 Main St., is directing arrangements.

Thomas O'Connor, 87

WORCESTER -- Thomas V. O'Connor, 87, of 38 Copperfield Road, a World War II veteran and retired firefighter, died Thursday, Feb. 1, in St. Vincent Hospital at Worcester Medical Center after a brief illness.

He leaves his wife of 49 years, Gertrude T. (O'Connor) O'Connor; a son, Timothy J. O'Connor of Worcester; four daughters, Mary Ellen Mountain of Brewster, Patricia M. Lambert of the Jefferson section of Holden, Margaret A. O'Connor of Boston and Maureen A. O'Connor of Barre; a grandson; two step-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. A brother, James K. O'Connor of Worcester, died in 1985. He was born in Worcester, son of Thomas and Mary (Keegan) O'Connor. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Mr. O'Connor was a firefighter for more than 33 years for the city of Worcester, retiring in 1977. He also was a licensed electrician. He was a member of Christ the King Church, Tatnuck American Legion Post 288, and the Massachusetts and Worcester Retired Police and Firefighters associations.

The funeral will be held at 9:15 a.m. Monday, Feb. 5, from Kelly Funeral Home, 154 Lincoln St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Christ the King Church, 1052 Pleasant St. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. Calling hours are 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 4, in the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to Christ the King Church Building Fund, 1052 Pleasant St., Worcester, MA 01602.

Carroll V. O'Connor, 87

Carroll V. O'Connor, 87
WORCESTER -- Carroll V. O'Connor, 87, formerly of Mill Street, a retired educator and an accomplished runner who was active in the community, died Friday, Feb. 2, in Integrated Health Services.

He leaves many nephews, nieces, grandnephews and grandnieces. Four brothers, Robert E., Frank J., and Paul O'Connor, all of Worcester, and Thomas O'Connor of Spencer, predeceased him. He was born in Worcester, son of Frank J. and Mathilda V. (Bergstrom) O'Connor. He graduated from Classical High School, and was a 1937 graduate of the College of the Holy Cross, where he was a standout runner. He competed in the 1936 Olympic trials. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Mr. O'Connor was a teacher and later an assistant principal in the Worcester public school system. He was a Boy Scouts leader for 40 years for troops 41 and 100, and received the Silver Beaver Award. He was a member of Big Brothers/Big Sisters, the Holy Cross Alumni, the Holden Senior Walkers, the Holy Cross College Marching Band, the Rutland Fife and Drum Corps, Volksmarch of America and the Worcester Scuba Divers. Mr. O'Connor had been a disaster volunteer for the American Red Cross and a lifeguard for the YMCA. He belonged to St. Charles Borromeo Church.

The funeral will be held Monday, Feb. 5, from O'Connor Brothers Funeral Home, 592 Park Ave., with a Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Charles Borromeo Church, 341 June St. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. Calling hours are 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 4, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 36 Cameron Ave., Cambridge, MA 02140-1102.

Madeline M. O'Leary

WORCESTER -- Madeline M. (Stupin) O'Leary, 85, of 27 Orne St., died Friday, Jan. 26, at home after a short illness.

Her husband of 60 years, John J. O'Leary, died in June. She leaves two sons, Daniel J. and John P. O'Leary, both of Worcester; two daughters, Cynthia M. O'Leary of Kennebunkport, Maine, and Deborah M. O'Leary of Worcester; a brother, Jakov “Sonny” Stupin of Hoboken, N.J.; two sisters, Olga Quigley of Long Island, N.Y., and Violet Vrazel of Charlestown, N.H.; and a granddaughter. She was born in New York City, daughter of Jakov and Frances Stupin. She and her husband, who was in the military, lived in Germany in the 1940s and 1950s and 13 years in Saudi Arabia. She lived 35 years in the Worcester area. She graduated from Hoboken High School.

Mrs. O'Leary was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Bernard's Church, and a volunteer at Worcester Art Museum. She was involved with the International Club of Exchange Students. She volunteered with the Red Cross in Germany and with the Welcome Wagon Organization in Germany and Saudi Arabia.

The funeral will be held Monday, Jan. 29, from Nordgren, Carrigan, Mangsen Memorial Chapel, 300 Lincoln St., with a Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Bernard's Church, 236 Lincoln St. Burial will be at a later date. A calling hour is 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 29, in the funeral home. Donations may be made to St. Bernard's Church, 236 Lincoln St., Worcester, MA 01605.

Stanley J. Oles, 76

UXBRIDGE -- Stanley J. Oles, 76, of 56 Homeward Ave., a World War II veteran and retired foundry worker, died Thursday, Feb. 1, in Milford-Whitinsville Regional Hospital, Milford, after being stricken ill at home.

He leaves his wife of 51 years, Cecelia T. (Bilodeau) Oles; two daughters, Mary S. Fournier of Woonsocket, R.I., and Brenda L. Oles of Uxbridge; a brother, Henry Oles of Worcester; two sisters, Stella Beaudreau and Jenny Oles, both of North Grafton; five grandchildren; a great-grandson; nephews and nieces. A son, John S. Oles, died in 1985. A brother, Benny Oles, also predeceased him. He was born in Northbridge, son of John and Sophie (Czekocski) Oles, and lived in Uxbridge since 1949. He attended Northbridge schools and was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving in Asia and the Pacific.

Mr. Oles worked 38 years at the Whitin Machine Works foundry, Whitinsville, and then at M-C Machine, Hopedale.

The funeral will be Monday, Feb. 5, from Tancrell-Jackman Funeral Home, 35 Snowling Road, with a Mass at 12:30 p.m. in St. Mary's Church, 77 Mendon St. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 4, in the funeral home.

Charlotte A. Olson, 82

MINNEAPOLIS -- Charlotte A. (Hurd) Olson, 82, of 3663 Park Center Boulevard, St. Louis Park, Minn., formerly of Worcester, Mass., died on Sunday, Dec. 31 at Methodist Hospital, St. Louis Park, Minn.

Her husband of 49 years, Charles L. Olson, died in 1993. She leaves two daughters, Gretchen Marks of Topsfield, Mass. and June Laperie of Minneapolis; a brother, Franklin H. Hurd of Irvine, Calif; a sister, Doris Beardsley of Coon Rapids, Minn.; two grandchildren and a great-grandson. Two brothers, Ethan A. and Ward H. Hurd, predeceased her. She was born in Minneapolis, daughter of Carroll L. and Laura (Henning) Hurd, and lived in Worcester, before returning to Minnesota in 1994. She graduated from the St. Louis Park High School and attended the University of Minnesota.

Mrs. Olson was secretary/treasurer of Appleton Beechcraft Corporation, Appleton, Wis. She then was secretary/treasurer of the Worcester Rotary Club, where she was a Paul Harris Fellow. She was an avid gardener, a member of civic groups throughout her life, and a member of the Union Congregational United Church of Christ, St. Louis Park, Minn.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, at the Union Congregational United Church of Christ, St. Louis, Minn. Burial was at the New Swedish Cemetery, Worcester. There were no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, PO Box 68, Topsfield, MA 01983.
