Mary C. Sexton, 85

Tuesday, April 3, 2001

DEDHAM -- Mary C. (Dyer) Sexton, 85, of Dedham, formerly of Worcester, a retired registered nurse, died Monday, April 2, at the Endicott Manor Nursing Home.

Her husband, Louis J. Sexton, predeceased her. She leaves three daughters, Annette M., Mary Lou and Ellen L. Sexton, all of Dedham; two brothers, Monsignor John J. and William H. Dyer, both of Worcester; a sister, Rose A. Dyer of Worcester; and a grandson. Two brothers, Thomas P. and Martin J. Dyer, predeceased her. She was born in Brighton. She graduated from Saint Elizabeth's School of Nursing, Brighton, in 1937.

Mrs. Sexton was a registered nurse, before retiring. She was a member of St. Mary's Church and its Sodality.

The funeral will be at 9:15 a.m. Thursday, April 5, from the George F. Doherty and Sons Wilson-Cannon Funeral Home, 456 High St. with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, High St. Calling hours are 4 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, April 4, in the funeral home. Burial will be in Holyhood Cemetery, Brookline. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Saint Mary's Life Teen Center, 420 High St., Dedham, MA 02026.

Anne Shaw, 85

LEOMINSTER -- Anne (Munson) Shaw, 85, of 271 Church St., Clinton, formerly of Leominster, died Sunday, March 8, in Clinton Hospital.

Her husband, Donald W. Shaw, died in 1987. She leaves two sons, Donald W. Shaw Jr. of Lunenburg and William M. Shaw of Amherst, N.H.; two sisters, Virginia Mason of The Woodlands, Texas and Priscilla Bennett of Midland, Ontario; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren. She was born Milford, Conn., daughter of George and Ethel (Groesbek) Munson, and moved to Leominster in 1938. She lived three months in Clinton. She graduated from Fitchburg High School in 1933, and later graduated from the Weylister School in Connecticut.

Mrs. Shaw worked 35 years for the Leominster Public Library before retiring.

She was a member of the Unitarian Universalist First Church.

The memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 12, in Unitarian Universalist First Church, 15 West St. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Leominster Public Library, 30 West St., Leominster, MA 01453. Silas F. Richardson & Son Funeral Home, 106 West St., is directing arrangements.

Lillian M. Sheran, 60

SOUTHBRIDGE -- Lillian M. (Bugbee) Sheran, 60, of 23 Dean St., died Monday, April 9, in her home after an illness.

Her husband, Wilbert M. Sheran Sr., died in 1982. She leaves two sons, Wilbert M. Sheran Jr. of Sturbridge and Michael H. Sheran of Southbridge; two daughters, Lori L. Sheran and Dawn A. Sheran, both of Southbridge; a brother, Henry Bugbee Jr. of Thompson, Conn.; two sisters, Sylvia Etheridge of Portland, Conn. and Ethel Hartwig of Yates Center, Kan.; seven grandchildren; nephews and nieces. A brother, Arthur E. Bugbee of Brooklyn, Conn., died in 2000. She was born in Putnam, daughter of Henry and Rose (LaChapelle) Bugbee.

Mrs. Sheran worked for Aearo Safety (formerly American Optical Safety and Cabot Safety), for 29 years, before retiring in recent years.

The funeral will be held Thursday, April 12, from the Daniel T. Morrill Funeral Home, 130 Hamilton St., with a Liturgy of the Word service at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, 263 Hamilton St. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 11, at the funeral home.

Francis E. Smith, 88

TEMPLETON -- Francis E. Smith, 88, of 184 Main St., Otter River, died Monday, April 9, in the Leo P. LaChance Rehabilitation Center, Gardner.

His wife of 50 years, Henrietta (Hetnik) Smith, died in 1992. He leaves three sons, Francis E. Smith Jr. of Elizabeth City, N.C., John A. Smith of Baldwinville, and Phillip P. Smith of Otter River; four brothers, Harry T. Smith of Athol, Charles Smith of Hamden, Conn., Robert Smith of Baltimore, Md., and Roland Smith of Winchendon; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren. Four brothers, Donald J. Smith of Gardner, Bertram and Arthur Smith, both of Otter River, and George Smith of Florida, and two sisters, Margaret Long of Templeton and Kay Fallon of Keene, N.H., predeceased him. He was born in Otter River, son of Frank M. and Nora (Conners) Smith.

Mr. Smith was a paper maker 50 years at Seaman Paper Co., retiring 20 years ago.

He was a member of St. Martin's Church. He was a founding member and past president of the Otter River Sportsmen's Club. He was a member of the Otter River Fire Department for many years. He enjoyed fishing and hunting.

The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 12, in John H. Mack Funeral Home, 91 Vernon St., Gardner. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Baldwinville. Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 11, in the funeral home. Donations may be made to the Templeton Rescue Squad, PO Box 4, Baldwinville, MA 01436 or St. Martin's Church Renovation Fund, 248 State Road, Otter River, MA 01436.

Ellery B. Smith, 95

SUTTON -- Ellery B. “Bucky” Smith, 95, of 337 Boston Road, a retired superintendent, died Friday, July 13, at home after an illness.

His wife of 62 years, Faith A. (Freeland) Smith, died in 1992. He leaves three sons, Stephen H. Smith of New Lebanon, N.Y., Raymond E. and Andrew F. Smith, both of Sutton; a daughter, Hope E. Stockhaus of Sutton; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. A son, Harold F. Smith of Camden, Maine, six brothers, Fred H., Walter A., Channing W., Wilder S., Daniel S. and James A. Smith, and three sisters, Marian T., Flora L. and Jane H. Smith, predeceased him. He was born in Sutton, son of Fred S. and J. Tyla (Holbrook) Smith, and graduated from Sutton High School in 1924.

Mr. Smith was a superintendent at Leland & Gifford Co., Worcester, where he started as an apprentice after high school and worked 46 years, retiring in 1970. He was an active firefighter in Sutton for more than 50 years. He was deputy chief of Company 1 from 1944 to 1970 and then Sutton fire chief from 1970 until retiring in 1988.

He was the oldest member of the First Congregational Church, where he was an active member for 81 years and also sang in the church choir. He was an election worker and Warden of Precinct 1 until he was 91. He was also a member and past master of the Sutton Grange; a charter member of the Sutton Men's Club and a member of its bowling team until after age 90; and a member of the Blackstone Valley Forestry Association, the Fire Chiefs Association of Massachusetts, and the Masonic Lodge of Masons in Oxford. He played baseball in the former Blackstone Valley League and enjoyed cribbage. He played trumpet in a musical group with his brothers.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 17, in First Congregational Church, 312 Boston Road. Burial will be in Howard Cemetery. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 16, in Mulhane Home for Funerals, 45 Main St., Millbury. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ellery B. and Faith F. Smith Memorial Music Fund, c/o First Congregational Church, PO Box 507, Sutton, MA 01590.

Anna R. Smith, 84

WORCESTER -- The funeral for Anna R. (Kenney) Smith, 84, formerly of Worcester, who died Saturday, April 7, was held Wednesday, April 11. Burial was in Central Cemetery, Millbury.

Her husband died in 1953. She leaves a brother; a sister; a niece and several nephews. A brother, Thomas P. Kenney of Buffalo, N.Y., and two sisters, Catherine E. and Mary Syseskey, both of Worcester, predeceased her.

Edmund Smolenski, 72

OXFORD -- Edmund B. Smolenski, 72, of Church Street, a World War II veteran and a retired business owner and operator, died Tuesday, April 3, at home after a long illness.

He leaves his wife of 46 years, Barbara M. (Young) Smolenski; a son, Edmund A. Smolenski of Oxford; a daughter, Karen S. Anderson of Oxford; a brother, Stephen Smolenski of Charlton; three sisters, Bernice Christian and Dolores Lyons, both of Oxford, and Victoria Robert of Danville, Va.; four grandchildren; nephews and nieces. A brother, Joseph Smolenski of Worcester, died in 1986. Another brother, Henry E. Smolenski of Oxford, died in 1997. A sister, Cecelia Millette of Oxford, died in 1995. Another sister, Lucille DuBois of Houston, died in 1989. He was born in Webster, son of Adolph M. and Michalena (Kwiatkowski) Smolenski, and lived several years in Webster before moving to Oxford in 1934. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the Mediterranean and the North Atlantic.

Mr. Smolenski owned and operated B&E Tool Co., retiring in 1980. Previously, he was a tool maker at Jamesbury Co., Worcester. He was a former member of St. Roch's Church. He enjoyed cribbage, cards, gardening and horseshoes.

The memorial Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 7, in St. Roch's Church, 332 Main St. Burial will be at a later date. There are no public calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to VNA Care Hospice Inc., 120 Thomas St., Worcester, MA 01608. Paradis Funeral Home, 357 Main St., is directing arrangements.

Winifred Sorlin, 98

THOMPSON -- Winifred (Kuszewski) Sorlin, 98, of Quinebaug Road, North Grosvenordale, died Thursday, April 5, in Oakwood Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Webster.

Her husband, Emile L. Sorlin, died in 1955. She leaves a son, Russell Sorlin of North Grosvenordale; two nieces, Theresa Gaherty of Houston and Irene Strenk of Webster; grandnieces and grandnephews. Two brothers, Michael and Joseph Kuszewski, and two sisters, Catherine Strenk and Agnes Jarosz, both of Webster, predeceased her. Born and raised in Webster, daughter of Frank and Catherine (Rok) Kuszewski, she lived 60 years in North Grosvenordale.

Mrs. Sorlin was a life member of Holy Trinity Polish National Catholic Church in Webster.

A private funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 7, in Bartel Funeral Home & Chapel, 33 Schofield Ave., Dudley. After cremation, burial will be private in Holy Trinity Polish National Catholic Cemetery, Dudley. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Holy Trinity Polish National Catholic Church Building Fund, 68 Lake St., Webster, MA 01570.

Lillian I. Spaulding, 90

HOLDEN -- Lillian I. (Oster) Spaulding, 90, formerly of 12 Springdale Road, a retired seamstress, died Thursday, April 5, in the Masonic Home, Charlton, after an illness.

Her husband of 64 years, Walter E. Spaulding, died in 1995. She leaves a son, Richard G. Spaulding of Jefferson; a daughter, Evadell L. Roy of Holden; two sisters, Elsie Decoteau and Alice Sampson, both of Shrewsbury; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. A sister, Millie Carlson, predeceased her. She was born in Lynn, daughter of Charles G. and Emma F. (Landregan) Oster, and moved to Holden in 1929. She graduated from Commerce High School, Worcester.

Mrs. Spaulding was a seamstress 30 years for Seed The Tailor, Worcester, retiring in 1980. She was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, the Order of Eastern Star, and the Professional Horseman's Association.

The funeral service and burial will be private. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Masonic Home, 88 Masonic Home Road, Charlton, MA 01507. Mercadante Funeral Home & Chapel, 370 Plantation St., Worcester, is directing arrangements.

Lawrence St. Pierre, 93

WORCESTER -- Lawrence J. St. Pierre, 93, of 111 Canterbury St., a World War II veteran and carpenter, died Sunday, April 1, in the Hermitage.

He leaves his wife of 55 years, Lillian L. (Desrosiers) St. Pierre; a son, Joseph L. St. Pierre of Holden; three daughters, Lorraine M. Scanlon and Pauline M. St. Pierre, both of Worcester and Mary T. Cardinal of Webster; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; several nephews and nieces. A son, Lawrence St. Pierre of Oxford, died in 1979. He was born in Sherbrook, Quebec, son of Joseph and Marie (Drolet) St. Pierre, and lived most of his life in Worcester. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Mr. St. Pierre was a carpenter 25 years for Granger Brothers Construction Co., retiring in 1972.

He was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Church and its League of the Sacred Heart.

The funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 4, in Holy Name of Jesus Church, 53 Illinois St. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. There are no calling hours. Alfred Roy & Sons Funeral Home, 12 Hammond St., is directing arrangements.

August M. Thiesing, 91

MARLBORO -- August M. Thiesing, 91, of 7 Church St., a retired plant supervisor and bookkeeper, died Tuesday, April 3, in Marlboro Hospital after a brief illness.

He leaves his wife of 55 years, Mary L. (Haight) Thiesing; two sons, Robert A. Thiesing of Ellington, Conn., and August W. Thiesing of Lake Shawnee, N.J.; a daughter, Ann E. Thiesing of Stafford Springs, Conn.; and two grandchildren. He was born in Willington, Conn., son of August and Emma (Lohse) Thiesing, and lived the past 40 years in Marlboro. He graduated from Stafford High School in Stafford Springs and Bay Path College in Longmeadow.

Mr. Thiesing was a plant supervisor and bookkeeper more than 25 years at Linde Oxygen Manufacturing Co., Sudbury. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Stafford and held a membership in the Girl Scouts of America-Patriot Trail Division of Boston. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and baseball.

The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 7, in John P. Rowe Funeral Home Inc., 57 Main St. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Calling hours are 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 7, in the funeral home.

Avis M. Tobin, 69

WILLOUGHBY HILLS, Ohio -- Avis M. (Olson) Tobin, 69, of Willoughby Hills, formerly of Chicago, South Euclid, and Worcester, Mass., died Tuesday, April 10, in Cleveland Clinic.

She leaves her husband, Francis E. Tobin; three sons, Mark Tobin of Willoughby Hills, Craig Tobin of Cuyahoga Falls and Brian Tobin of Willoughby; and five grandchildren. A sister, Elaine Olson, predeceased her. She was born in Worcester, daughter of John A. and Ann Olson. She graduated from North High School, Worcester, in 1949, and from Harper College in Illinois.

Mrs. Tobin was a schoolteacher for the Schaumburg School District 54 in Illinois.

The memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, April 13, in Willoughby Hills United Methodist Church, 34201 Eddy Road, Willoughby Hills. Inurnment will be in Mentor Cemetery, Mentor. Memorial contributions may be made to Willoughby Hills United Methodist Church, 34201 Eddy Road, Willoughby Hills, OH 44094. Brunner Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 8466 Mentor Ave., Mentor, is directing arrangements.

Joseph A. Tosoni, 72

LEOMINSTER -- Joseph A. Tosoni, 72, of 51 Christina St., died Tuesday, April 10, in HealthAlliance Leominster Hospital after an illness.

He leaves a nephew, Peter J. Tosoni of Fitchburg; a niece, Donna Tosoni of Long Island, N.Y. A brother, Lino Tosoni, died in 1987. He was born in Leominster, son of Luigi and Angelina (Rigo) Tosoni.

He was an Army veteran of the Korean War.

Mr. Tosoni was an engineer and boiler maker at Holt & Voge Co. in Groton. He also worked at James River Paper Co. in Fitchburg and Weyerhaeuser Paper Co., also in Fitchburg.

The funeral will be held Friday, April 13, from Brandon-Simard Funeral Home, 305 Wanoosnoc Road, Fitchburg, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Leo's Church, 108 Main St. A calling hour will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. Friday, April 13, in the funeral home.
