Lorraine Kavanagh, 60

Pelham - Lorraine V. Kavanagh, 60, who leaves a brother in Marstons Mills, died Monday, July 27, 1998 at Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton.

Born in Boston, Ms. Kavanagh was raised in Waban and was a graduate of Newton High School and Hood College in Frederick, Md. She earned a master's degree in education at Harvard University in 1968.

She held teaching positions in several places, including the American School in Switzerland, Usaid Mission in Laos, Montclair High School in New Jersey and Salem High School, where she was vice-principal from 1975 to 1981.

Ms. Kavanagh was appointed instructional director at Amherst Regional High School in 1981. On three occasions, she was called upon to serve as acting principal at the high school and at Fort River Elementary School in Amherst. She retired in 1997.

A member of the Amherst High School Building Committee from 1995 to 1997, she played an instrumental role in the realization of the new high school faculty.

Surviving are two sisters, Karol Kavanagh Bibbs of Brookline and Dianne Kavanagh Potter of East Walpole; and three brothers, John H. Kavanagh Jr. of Auburndale, Kevin F.M. Kavanagh of Marstons Mills and Whang Phang of Arlington, Va.

A funeral Mass of Christian Burial was held at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Osterville. A memorial service in Amherst will be held at a later date.

George P. Maselli, 75

Osterville - George P. MaselIi, 75, died unexpectedly Saturday, July 25, 1998 at Cape Cod Hospital, Hyannis.

He was the husband of Lillian P. (Sherlock) Maselli.

Mr. Maselli was born and educated in Revere. He was a Navy veteran from World War II, serving in the European, African and Middle Eastern Theaters. He was discharged as a gunner's mate 1st class.

After World War II, Mr. Maselli attended New York University, where he graduated with a degree in electrical engineering. He later enrolled at Stevens Institute of Technology in New Jersey, where he earned his master's degree.

Mr. Maselli lived and worked in New Jersey before moving in 1962 to Chelmsford, where he worked as an electrical engineer for Raytheon in Bedford.

Mr. Maselli retired 11 years ago and moved to Osterville, where he began work as a private consultant for various engineering firms.

He enjoyed gardening, hiking, and playing the guitar and the piano.

Surviving besides his wife are four daughters, Janet M. Stocek of Medford, Ore., Lili R. Maselli of Wenham, Teresa A. Manahan of Keene, N.H., and Joyce M. Rodgers of Hamilton; three sons, George P. Maselli of Denver, William D. Maselli of Andover, Maine, and Donald T. Maselli of Altamont, N.Y.; four sisters, Hilda Mercurio of Medford, Nancy Maselli and Louise Cook, both of Malden, and Anna Hallaran of Georgetown; two brothers, Frank Maselli of Reading and Edward Maselli of Newington, Conn.; 14 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A funeral Mass was celebrated in Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Osterville. Burial was in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.

Mildred S. Munis, 80

Barnstable - Mildred S. (Berge) Munis, 80, a retired executive secretary, died unexpectedly Sunday, July 27, 1998 at Cape Cod Hospital, Hyannis.

She was the wife of the late Bradford E. Munis.

Born and raised in Springfield, Mrs. Munis was educated in Springfield public schools and graduated from Springfield Classical High School. She also graduated from Bay Path College in Springfield.

Mrs. Munis was the executive secretary to the president and vice-president of Northeast Utilities in West Springfield from 1963 until her retirement in 1982.

Upon her retirement, she moved to Barnstable and was active at the First Lutheran Church in West Barnstable, Sturgis Library in Barnstable and the Cape Cod Symphony.

She was instrumental in raising her grandchildren after the death of her stepdaughter in 1978.

Surviving are a brother, Martel O. Berge of Edgewater, Fla.; a sister, Esther M. Tefft of Framingham; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held at the First Lutheran Church, West Barnstable. Burial was private.

John E. Powers, 87

Hyannis - John E. Powers, 87, died Saturday, August 1, 1998 at Cape Cod Hospital Extended Care Community Manor after a brief illness.

He was the husband of Alice Theresa (Pokco) Powers since 1976 and Dorothy (Hutton) Powers, who died in 1973.

Born in Boston, Mr. Powers was educated in South Boston schools and graduated from Suffolk University Law School in Boston. He moved to Hyannis in 1976 from South Boston.

He served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives, representing Ward 6, South Boston from 1938 to 1946. He was Democratic floor leader from 1941 to 1942.

Mr. Powers served in the Massachusetts Senate from 1948 to 1964. He was Senate Democratic floor leader in 1949 and from 1951 to 1960. He was president of the Senate from 1959 to 1964. He represented the 4th Suffolk District.

In 1964, he became Clerk of the Supreme Judicial Court of Suffolk County. He retired in 1988.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, John E. Powers Jr. of Revere; a daughter, Dorothy Powers Kelly of Stoughton; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

His funeral was followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Brigid's Church, South Boston. Burial was private in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Centerville.

Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Richard B. Smith, 61

Pelion, South Carolina - Richard B. Smith, 61, died Sunday, July 27, 1998 at the Baptist Medical Center in Columbia after a long illness.

He was the husband of Irene A. (Pelletier) Cutler-Smith.

Born and raised in Winthrop, Mass., he lived in Waltham, Mass., most of his life. After his retirement he moved to Pelion, where he had lived for the past eight years.

A Naval Reserve veteran, Mr. Smith was employed by United Parcel Service of Watertown for 25 years. He was a member of the Teamsters Local No. 25 and the Waltham Lodge of Elks No. 953.

Surviving besides his wife are five daughters, Sharon Smith, Susan Smith and Cynthia Summers, all of Hyannis, Nancy Crocker of Osterville and Deborah Sylvia of North Harwich; a son, Kevin Smith of Cardville, Maine; two stepdaughters, Donna Forsythe of Maynard, Mass., and Sandra Mace of Waltham, Mass.; four stepsons; Kenneth Cutler Jr. of Wareham, Mass., Robert Cutler of Harwich, Michael Cutler of Maynard, Mass., and Edward Cutler of Ayer, Mass.; a sister, Carol Weleski of Pelion; many grandchildren; and a devoted friend, Dorothy Melanson of Hyannis.

A funeral service was held in the chapel of the Brasco & Sons Memorial, Waltham, Mass. Burial was in Mount Feake Cemetery.

John R. Sullivan, 77

Centerville - John Ralph Sullivan, 77, a former telephone company test man and real estate agent, died unexpectedly Monday, July 27, 1998 at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. He was the husband of the late Frances (Sheehan) Sullivan, whom he married in 1943.

Born and raised in Brockton, he was a 1938 graduate of Brockton High School and a graduate of the Williams Business School in Brockton. Mr. Sullivan served in the Coast Guard from 1942 to 1945. He worked as a test man for New England Telephone Co. from 1949 until his retirement in 1981. He was also a real estate agent for McCormick Real Estate in Brockton during the 1960s and 1970s.

He moved to Centerville in 1982, where he was a communicant of Our Lady of Victory Church and very active with Catholic Charities.

An avid Red Sox fan, Mr. Sullivan also loved boating, golfing, bowling and spending time with his children and grandchildren.

The funeral was followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in Our Lady of Victory Church, Centerville. Burial followed at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.

Rita M. Swiler, 65

Oxford - Rita M. (Paradise) Swiler, 65, who leaves a brother in Centerville, died Sunday, July 27, 1998 at St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester after an illness.

She was the wife of Start K. Swiler for 28 years.

Born in Worcester, she lived in Sturbridge for many years before moving to Oxford. She was a 1951 graduate of Auburn High School and a 1953 graduate of St. Vincent School of Nursing.

Mrs. Swiler worked as a nurse for 40 years for The Masonic Home in Charlton, The Greenery Nursing Home in Worcester and Harrington Memorial Hospital in Southbridge until her retirement in 1990.

She served as a captain in the Air Force, handling nursing duties during the Vietnam War.

Surviving besides her husband are a daughter, Stephanie K. Swiler of Charlton; three brothers, Richard Paradise of Centerville, Raymond Paradise Jr. of Auburn and Robert Paradise of Northboro; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held at the Alfred Roy & Sons Funeral Home, Worcester. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Alma Jane Tivey, 70

Centerville - Alma Jane (Patton) Tivey, 70, formerly of Lynnfield, died Wednesday, July 29, 1998 at her home after a brief illness.

She was the wife of Robert C. Tivey, Sr.

Mrs. Tivey was born, raised and educated in Lynn. She studied for three years at the Massachusetts School of Art.

In 1963, Mrs. Tivey moved to Cape Cod. She was treasurer for Gillis & Tivey Inc. from 1974 to 1998 and for Zip Instant Printing from 1975 to 1987.

She was president of the Hyannis Rotary Ann group in 1978 and was a former member of the Osterville Garden Club. She enjoyed watercolor painting.

Besides her husband of 48 years, Mrs. Tivey leaves three sons, Robert C. Tivey Jr. of Marstons Mills, Russell C. Tivey of Hyannis, Ronald C. Tivey of Barnstable; one sister, Francine Chandler of Lynn; one brother, Richard Patton of Manchester, N.H.; six grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were followed by burial in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Cape Cod, 923 Route 6A, Yarmouthport, MA 02675.
