Carl O. Bankston, 88
Hyannis - Carl O. Bankston, 88, a former business owner, died Thursday, Dec. 31, 1998 at the Greenery Rehabilitation & Skilled Nursing Center at Hyannis.
He was the husband of Helen E. Bankston for 61 years.
Born and raised in Georgia, he was formally trained at the Art Corcoran School of Art in Washington , D.C. After his schooling, he was married and traveled for a short time before opening The Carl and Helen Studio on Broadway and 53rd Street in New York City.
During World War II, Mr. Bankston traveled to hospitals abroad and sketched the wounded. He returned to New York City after the war and lived there until moving to Hyannis in 1954.
In Hyannis, he owned and operated Carl's Studio on Main Street in Hyannis. He was a fixture on Main Street until he retired in 1962.
Surviving besides his wife are a son, Paul J. Bankston of Wisconsin; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was also the father of the late Donald C. Bankston.
A service was held at Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home, Hyannis.
Mary B. Carlson, 80
West Barnstable - Mary B. (Brannick) Carlson, 80, died Saturday, Dec. 26, 1998 at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.
She was the daughter of the late John and Bridget (Faulkner) Brannick and the wife of Roger E. Carlson Sr., who died in 1992.
Born and raised in New York City, Mrs. Carlson worked with children in need through various community organizations after she graduated from high school. She married in 1940 and made her home in West Barnstable.
Mrs. Carlson worked for the Massachusetts School Food Service in the Barnstable school system for 22 years, from 1962 to 1984. She served as president of the food service her last two years.
Active in her village, Mrs. Carlson served on many committees.
She served as president of the West Barnstable Civic Association and was an active member of the Friends of West Barnstable.
She also served as warden at the polls in Precinct 2 and was a town meeting representative. She was on the bicentennial committee for the Town of Barnstable and worked as a dorm councilor at the Riverview School in East Sandwich.
Mrs. Carlson belonged to Our Lady of Hope Church and was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary Guild.
Surviving are two daughters, Evelyn Grady of West Barnstable and Christine Bednark of Centerville; two sisters, Josephine McClosky of New York and Margaret Stuart of Colorado; six grandchildren, Meg Boera of Vermont, David Grady of Marstons Mills, Barbara Carlson of Califorina, Andrew Carlson of Arizona, and James and Michael Bednark of Centerville; a great-grandson, Ryan Boera of Vermont; many nieces and nephews; and two very special friends, Shirley Wallace of West Barnstable and Laura Skalksy of Centerville.
She was also the mother of "Chip" Carlson, who died in 1980.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Jan. 9 at Our Lady of Victory Church, Centerville. Burial is private.

William F. Chapman, Jr., 90
Hyannis - William F. "Walking Tall" Chapman Jr., 90, died Thursday, Dec. 24, 1998 at Cape Regency Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Centerville.
He was the husband of the late Anna C. (Gomes) Chapman.
Mr. Chapman was born in Cambridge and raised and educated in Needham. In 1936 he married, and in 1946 the couple moved to Hyannis where he lived until his death.
During the 1950s and 1960s he was a driver for Hyannis Taxi. He worked for the Cape Cod Times delivering newspapers from the early 1970s until recently, when he became ill.
Mr. Chapman was a lifetime member of the Hyannis chapter of the NAACP and a lifetime member of the Cape Cod Jazz Society.
He was also a member of the Mashpee Wampanoag Indian Tribal Council, where he was known as Walking Tall.
A writer and composer of music, Mr. Chapman was a jazz enthusiast and had music compositions published. He was also a historian and enjoyed reading, music, jewelry making and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by two sons, William F. Chapman III and Anthony J. Chapman, both of Hyannis; two daughters, Cella A. Ohlhaber of Chicago and Annafred B. Lee of Springfield; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held at Doane, Beal &Ames Funeral Home, Hyannis. Burial was private.

Helen B. Dunne, 82
Hyannis - Helen B. (Melnick) Dunne, 82, a Hyannis Realtor, died Sunday, Dec. 27, 1998 at the Cape Regency Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Centerville.
She was the wife of Dr. James E Dunne, a Hyannis podiatrist, who died in 1995.
Born in Sunderland, Mrs. Dunne was a graduate of Deerfield High School and Bay Path College. She lived in Hyannis for more than 45 years.
She was a member of the National Association of Realtors, Massachusetts Board of Realtors and Cape Cod Board of Realtors.
Surviving are two daughters, Nancy G. Bulger of Chevy Chase, Md., and Karen J.D. Holmquist of Ocean Springs, Miss.; a sister, Maron Crane of Belmont; four grandsons; a niece; and two grandnephews.
A gathering was held at the Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home, Hyannis. Burial followed in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Lynn.

Ute Euler, 58
Hyannis - Ute Euler, 58, a medical technician and administrator, died Monday, Dec. 21, 1998 at her home after a brief illness.
Born in Tubingen, Germany, she was educated in Gemany and lived in Burlington for more than 20 years before moving to Hyannis in 1984.
She had worked for Cape Cod Cardiovascular Associates for the past four years as an administrator.
She enjoyed knitting, hiking and flower gardening.
She is survived by her fiancé, James Gorham of Hyannis; two daughters, Andrea Granito of Hudson and Ingrid Bleren of Billerica; three sisters, Brunhilde Grams, Helma Ziegler-Hillmann and Martina Ziegler-Baass, all of Germany; and a brother, Lothar Ziegler of Germany.
A funeral service was held at the Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home, Hyannis.

Daniel J. Gallagher, 80
West Hyannisport - Daniel J. Gallagher, 80, active in many community organizations, died Friday, Dec. 25, 1998 at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis from injuries due to an automobile accident.
He was the husband of Catherine M. (Kelly) Gallagher.
Mr. Gallagher was born in Boston and graduated from Boston Latin School in 1936.
He was in the Army during World War II, serving in Japan. He retired as a lieutenant colonel and was past commander of the 101 INF Mass ARNG.
Mr. Gallagher retired in 1978 from the Boston Fire Department as a fire lieutenant, assistant to the fire commissioner.
A resident of West Hyannisport for the past 30 years, Mr. Gallagher was very active in the community. He was a member of the Barnstable Licensing Authority and the Barnstable Housing Authority, a board member of Friends of Barnstable Council on Aging, past airport commissioner and chairman of Barnstable Municipal Airport, past Barnstable town meeting member and past president of the Hyannis Civic Association.
He was also past president of the Boston Fireman's Relief Fund, a life member of the American Legion Sandwich Post 188 and the Dennis E. Thomas Post 2578 VFW, and a member of the Wequaquet Lake Yacht Club and the Hyannis Yacht Club.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Daniel G. Gallagher of Massatutten, Va.; a daughter, Maureen C. Costello of Roslindale; a brother, Dr. William J. Gallagher of Milton; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
A funeral Mass was held in Our Lady of Victory Church, Centerville.
Burial was in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.

Lillian A. Isaacson, 96
Centerville - Lillian A. (Quimby) Isaacson, 96, a retired teacher, died Thursday, Dec. 24, 1998 at Cape Regency Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.
She was the wife of the late John Isaacson.
Born and raised in Everett, Mrs. Isaacson graduated from Everett High School in 1920. In 1922, she graduated from Salem State Teachers College, formerly known as Salem Normal School.
Mrs. Isaacson taught school in Chelsea from 1922 to 1925. After raising her family, she returned to teaching in the early 1950s. She taught in the Lynn school system until her retirement in 1965. Mrs. Isaacson was a resident of Lynn for 40 years before moving to South Yarmouth in 1965.
In South Yarmouth, she played the piano for the Senior Citizens Chorus from 1970 to 1982. In 1993, she moved to Centerville.
She was a member of the South Yarmouth United Methodist Church and was a life member of the Glendale Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star in Everett.
An avid reader, Mrs. Isaacson also enjoyed golfing, playing tennis and spending time with her grandchildren.
She is survived by a son, Alfred Q. Isaacson of Longmeadow; a daughter, Karen I. Thys of Centerville; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home, Hyannis.
Burial followed in Ancient Cemetery, Yarmouthport.
