Helen C. L. Funk
EASTON - Helen Carol Law Funk, of Easton and Fenwick Island, Del., died on Nov. 3, 1999, at William Hill Manor. She was 83.
Born in Clarksburg, W.Va. on Oct. 23, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Clyde O. and Maude Lininger Law. She lived much of her early life in Wheeling, W.Va., where her father was the general agent for the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company. She received her education from Washington Seminary for Women, the public schools of Wheeling, and the West Virginia Wesleyan College, where she was a member of the Emeritus Club.
She and her husband, Thorold Shaffer Funk, moved to Clarksburg, W. Va. in 1942, where she was active in the First Methodist Church, the Women's Society, Clarksburg League for Service, and as a volunteer she helped initiate the snack bar for the then new United Protestant Hospital. She was also a member and lived at Lake Floyd.
In 1966, she moved to Charleston, W.Va., when her husband became director of vocational rehabilitation for West Virginia. During this time, she was a member of the Sweetbrier Garden Club, and the Grandparents Club of Charleston. In 1991, she moved to William Hill Manor in Easton. Mr. Funk died in Jan. 1997.
Mrs. Funk is survived by a daughter, Mrs. William C. (Nancy Jo) Pepper of Selbyville, Del; a son, John G.L. Funk of York, Pa; a brother, John M. Law of Atlanta, Ga; four grandchildren, Bryan Pepper of Lewes, Del., Martin Pepper of Trappe, Md., Natalie P. Cataldi of Seaford, Del., and Amy F. Jackson of York, Pa.; and nine great-grandchildren. A sister, Marjorie Law Shipp, is deceased,
Burial will be private in Bridgeport Cemetery, Bridgeport, W.Va.

William E. Nagel
CHESTERTOWN - William E. Nagel of Chestertown, formerly of Catonsville, died on Nov. 3, 1999, at Kent and Queen Anne's Hospital. He was 80.
He was born in Ilchester, Md. on Nov. 2, 1919, the son of the late William E. and Eva May Lowe Nagel. He attended high school in Howard County and started working at a young age. He then began his career as a plumber with his uncle and worked in the shipyards as a welder. Mr. Nagel served in the U.S. Army as a military policeman during World War II in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. Upon his honorable discharge in 1946, Mr. Nagel returned to Maryland and continued his career as a welder/plumber in the Baltimore area. He was predeceased by his first wife, Eleanor M. Nagel, and in 1983 Mr. Nagel retired.
He married Betty Raye Bare Wilson Nagel in 1984 and they lived in Kinnaird Point in Worton. Mr. Nagel was a member of First United Methodist Church in Chestertown, Frank M. Jarman American Legion Post #36, and Great Oak Country Club.
In addition to his wife he is survived by two stepchildren: Lloyd Lee Wilson of Norfolk, Va. and Damon William Wilson of Hamptonville, N.C.; three brothers, Earl Nagel of Perry Hall, and George and John Walker both of Baltimore; two sisters, Margaret Wade of Finksburg and Shirley Pendleton of Ellicott City; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday Nov. 7, at First United Methodist Church in Chestertown. Friends called on Saturday Nov. 6, between the hours of 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, Chestertown. Interment was on Monday Nov. 8, at 11 a.m. at Meadowridge Memorial Park. Memorial donations may be made to First United Methodist Church P.O. W. Martin Shaffer Jr.
DENTON - W. Martin "Marty" Shaffer Jr. of Denton, died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1999, in Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, of heart failure. He was 60.
Born in Oil City, near Denton, Mr. Shaffer was the son of E. Louetta Hayman Shaffer of Denton and the late Walter "Pete" Martin Shaffer.
Mr. Shaffer graduated from Caroline High School in Denton, class of 1957, for which he was been class treasurer for the 40th class reunion.
He was a prominent Caroline County farmer and businessman and owned and operated Shaffer Equipment Co. in Denton.
Mr. Shaffer was a former member of the Denton Jaycees, a member of Ducks Unlimited, a member of the Caroline County Farm Bureau, past vice president of Denton Senior League, a member and manager of the State Jaycee Softball Champions in 1970 and 1971 and a member of the Denton Church of the Brethren.
In addition to his mother, Mr. Shaffer is survived by his wife, Mary Jo Shaffer of Denton; three children; Dawn S. Knox of Dover, Del., Dale M. Shaffer and Dana Breeding, both of Denton and six grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 7, at the Moore Funeral Home in Denton, where friends called Saturday from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m..
Interment was in Denton Cemetery, Denton.

Barry L. Benton
ELLICOTT CITY - Barry L. Benton of Ellicott city died Thursday, Nov. 4, 1999, at his home. He was 53.
Born Sept. 5, 1946, in Easton, he was the son of Emma E. "Bette" Benton of Centreville and the late Curtis E. Benton Sr.
Raised in Stevensville, he was a 1964 graduate of Stevensville High School.
Mr. Benton was a long-time resident of Howard County and had lived in Ellicott City for 21 years. He had been employed by the Social Security Administration and the Health Care Financing Administration for 35 years.
In addition to his mother, Mr. Benton is survived by his wife, Kathy Speca Benton; a daughter, Kelly Wilson Earp of Crofton; one son, Kevin Wilson of Columbia; a brother, Curtis E. Benton Jr. of Centreville; and one sister, Tina B. Houston of Stevensville.
Memorial services will be held at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 10, at Bethany United Methodist Church in Ellicott City.

Ruth M. Barclay
MILLINGTON - Ruth M. Barclay of Ingleside died Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, at Kent & Queen Anne's Hospital, Chestertown. She was 69.
Born in North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late George and Janie Foley.
Mrs. Barclay was a cook for Peggy's Restaurant in Bear, Del., for several years. She retired in 1976. Her husband, William A. Barclay, is deceased.
Mrs. Barclay is survived by a daughter, Norma Jean Carpenter of Ingleside; two sons, Charles T. Wallace of Chestertown and Mark Wallace of Denton; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Five sisters and three brothers are deceased.
Services were held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 9, at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, Millington. Burial was at Church Hill Cemetery.
Friends called at the funeral home on Tuesday one hour before the service.
William J. Meekins
CAMBRIDGE - William J. "Billy" Meekins of Fishing Creek died Thursday, Nov. 4, 1999, at his home. He was 61.
Born Oct. 3, 1938, at Fishing Creek, he was the son of the late William Kinnamon and Venia Meekins.
He had worked as a commercial waterman for most of his life.
Mr. Meekins is survived by a half brother, Eugene W. Tolley of Cambridge; a niece, Linda Marshall; and two nephews, Eugene W. Tolley Jr. and Michael P. Tolley. A brother, Guy K. Meekins is deceased.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 10, at Hosier Memorial United Methodist Churchyard, Fishing Creek.
Friends may call on Wednesday from 11 a.m. until noon at Thomas Funeral Home, Cambridge.
Esther E. Swann
TRAPPE - Esther Elisabeth "Ellie" Swann of Trappe died of cancer Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1999, at Talbot Hospice House. She was 76.
Born June 23, 1923, in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late Hans Torwald and Olga Khristina Johansen Ellingsen.
She completed nurse's training at Franklin Square Hospital in Baltimore. For a time during World War II, she was employed at the Glenn L. Martin Plant in Middle River. In 1946, she married James Ross Swann. They lived at Chestertown, Queenstown and Easton until moving to Trappe in the 1960s.
Mrs. Swann had been a nurse and a nursing supervisor at Memorial Hospital in Easton and the House in the Pines nursing home, also in Easton. After retiring from nursing, she was organist at Faith Chapel United Methodist Church in Bruceville.
Mrs. Swann was a member of Trappe United Methodist Church.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Swann is survived by a son, Robert Swann of Baltimore; one daughter, Lisa E. Swann of Washington, D.C.; two sisters, Olga Dickson of Timonium and Hannah Marie Flitton of Norfolk Va.; and three grandsons.
Services will be private.
