COL. FRANK R. MCFARLAND JR.
TOWSON - Col. Frank R. McFarland Jr., USAF (Retired), of Towson, died Tuesday, May 5, 1998, at the Center for Rehabilitation and Extended Care in Baltimore.
Formerly of Flintstone, Col. McFarland had resided in Towson for the past 50 years. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Russell McFarland, Col. McFarland spent his early years with his family at his parents' home place "Sunset Orchard" in Flintstone.

During World War II, Col. McFarland had been in charge of civil engineering in Burma, China, India and Africa. After serving more than three decades in active service as an engineer for Bolling Air Force Base (Washington, D.C.), Col. McFarland retired on Jan. 23, 1976.

He obtained his BS and MS degrees and worked toward a PhD from the University of Maryland, College Park. He achieved a Fulbright-Hayes Fellowship through the University of Maryland in 1975 to study in Egypt in the field of agronomy. This group fellowship was the first time to study modern Egypt since the war. They studied at the University of Cairo and University of Alexandria during the end of the war.

Col. McFarland began his career in Montgomery County Public Schools (1939-1941) as an agronomy teacher. Interrupted by the war and tours of duty, Col. McFarland continued his career as an Associate Professor of Horticulture at the University of Maryland before moving to Towson to take up residence as an Extension Agent for Baltimore County from 1947 to 1954. As a county agent, Col. McaFarland conducted many studies.

Later he turned to research and development and worked for Miller Chemical Co. as Director of Technical Sales and Services from 1954 to 1964. At Agway Chemical Co., Col. McFarland focused on the preparation of agricultural chemical labels for federal and state registration. At Kerr McGee, he served as an agronomist for a five-state region and frequently was called to the Caribbean Islands including Montserrat as a consultant solving disease problems in their crops. During that period he furthered his knowledge of insecticides and fungicides, editing manuals and a book in the field, which were in demand by chemical companies.

Finally, Col. McFarland developed the first agriculture and horticulture program in the Howard County School System. Furthermore, he was founder and owner of Scientific Plant Services Inc., selling it years later. Col. McFarland was the owner of The Land Nursery in Baltimore County.
