VIRGINIA E. VAN METER
CRESAPTOWN - Virginia Elizabeth (Lease) Van Meter, 74, of Winchester Road, Cresaptown, died Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998, at the Devlin Manor Nursing Home where she had been a resident for two years.
Born March 24, 1924, in Rawlings, she was the daughter of the late Harry W. and Rachel E. (Anderson) Lease. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Ray W. Van Meter, in 1983; and two sons, Larry R. Van Meter and Robert Van Meter.

Mrs. Van Meter was a member of Cresaptown United Methodist Church; honorary member of the Ladies Auxiliary-Cresaptown Volunteer Fire Department; and an avid Bingo participant.

Survivors include three daughters, Brenda Breedlove and husband Royce, Cresaptown, Judy Stumbaugh and husband Roger, Oldtown, and P. Jeanne Twigg and husband David, Durham, N.C.; one son, R. Wayne Van Meter and wife Donna, Purgitsville, W.Va.; three brothers, Robert Lease and wife Shirley, Buffalo, N.Y., Lloyd Lease and wife Gloria, Barrellville, and Donnie Lease, Hamburg, N.Y.; one sister, Mildred Daum and husband John, Cumberland; an adopted sister, Phyllis Vaneskee, New York; 22 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., corner of Greene and Smallwood streets, Cumberland, on Monday from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

The funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Harold R. McClay Jr. officiating.

Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Cresaptown Volunteer Fire Department, Warrior Drive, Cresaptown, MD 21502.

Serving as pallbearers will be Billy Van Meter Jr., Buddy Van Meter, Marcus Van Meter, Rel Breedlove, Jim Frost and James Wasson.

Honorary pallbearers will be Jeff Proud, Bill Van Meter Sr., Dave Twigg and John Lisanti.

WILLIAM A. VANNATTA
CUMBERLAND - William Arthur VanNatta, 56, of Cumberland, died Wednesday, Nov. 25, 1998, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born Feb. 1, 1942, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Mary "Midge" (Galford) VanNatta Bittner Wenrich. He also was preceded in death by his stepfather, George Bittner; and one stepbrother, Richard Bittner.

Mr. VanNatta was the owner of Cozy Inn, Cresaptown. He was a 1962 graduate of Allegany High School; and member of the Cresaptown Eagles 2883, Amvets Post 11 and the Sportsmen Club of the Eagles.

Surviving are one daughter, Carole L. Pare and husband Robert, Lanham; one sister, Audrey Snyder and husband Bruce, LaVale; one stepsister, Barbara Bittner, North Carolina; and three grandsons, Matthew, Andrew and Michael.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., Cresaptown, Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home Tuesday at 11 a.m. with Pastor Kevin T. Lowery officiating.

Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens, LaVale.

WILLIAM ALFRED VAN ORMER, SR., M.D.
CUMBERLAND - William Alfred Van Ormer, Sr., M.D. - 90, of Cumberland, died Sunday, Jan. 25, 1998, at the Cumberland Nursing Home.
Born Oct. 4, 1907, in Frostburg, he was the son of the late Dr. William L. Van Ormer and Sarah Bramwell (Shaffer) Van Ormer.

He also was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Jean Holland Van Ormer in 1986; and his brother, Col. (Ret.) Henry P. Van Ormer.

Dr. Van Ormer was raised in Schellsburg, Pa. He was a 1925 graduate of Bedford High School. He attended Gettysburg College for two years before transfering to the University of Maryland Medical School.

Upon graduation from medical school, Dr. Van Ormer interned at St. Agnes Hospital, Baltimore.

He began his General Family practice in Frostburg and moved it to Cumberland in 1938.

A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he had the rank of Captain and served in the European Theater.

Following the war, Dr. Van Ormer returned to Cumberland in 1945. He then specialized in Internal Medicine.

His private practice spanned 50 years, during which time he had worked at Sacred Heart Hospital and primarily at Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Van Ormer also was Past President of the Medical Staff at Memorial Hospital.

He belonged to the American College of Physicians and the American Medical Association.

Survivors include two sons, William A. Van Ormer, Jr., Pittsburgh, Pa., and Thomas S. "Tom" Van Ormer, Lafayette, Calif.; one daughter, Jean Holland "Holly" Dick, Pittsburgh; and five grandchildren, Andrew Paul Dick, Kingwood, W.Va., Douglass Van Ormer Dick, William A. Van Ormer, III, and Matthew Richard Van Ormer, all of Pittsburgh, and Emily Louise Van Ormer, Lafayette.

Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, 202 Greene Street, Cumberland, on Wednesday and Thursday, both days from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

The funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Friday at 11 a.m.

Interment will be in Hillcrest Burial Park.

Memorial contributions may be made to the LaVale Public Library, 815 National Highway, LaVale, MD 21502.

JOHN PAUL VAUKEN
LAVALE - John Paul Vauken, 83, of LaVale, passed away Monday, June 8, 1998, in Lions Manor Nursing Home, Cumberland.
Born Aug. 11, 1914, in Dodson, he was a son of the late John and Theresa (Podvoy) Vauken.

Mr. Vauken retired from General Motors in Baltimore.

He is survived by one nephew, David Vauken, Goldsboro, N.C.; one niece, Nancy Maher, Winter Springs, Fla.

Friends will be received on Wednesday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the David A. Burdock Funeral Home, Kitzmiller, where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m.

Interment will be in the Kalbaugh cemetery, Elk Garden, W.Va.

WINIFRED K. VOSE
SEVERNA PARK - Winifred K. Vose, of Severna Park, died Saturday, Nov. 28, 1998, after a lengthy illness.
She is survived by a daughter, Barbara V. Armstrong, Frostburg. Friends will be received at the Barranco Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway, Severna Park, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be held at the Severna Park United Methodist Church on Wednesday at 10 a.m. Interment will be in Warrenton, Va.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Chesapeake Hospice House, 817 Camp Meade Road, Linthicum, MD 21090.

PAUL H. WHITFORD
LAKE SAN MARCOS, Calif. - Paul Hobart Whitford, 73, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 16, 1998, at his home.
Paul was born Sept. 24, 1924, in Cumberland, Md., the son of the late Georgia and Hobart Whitford.

Paul graduated in 1942 from Fort Hill High School in Cumberland, receiving the Casey Memorial Award for outstanding sportsmanship. He then attended the University of Maryland.

During World War II he was a dive-bomber pilot for the U.S. Navy and was awarded the Navy Cross. He retired as a Commander.

He was a member of the Mason OHR Lodge No. 131, A.F. & A.M., and VFW Post 1411, both of Cumberland.

Paul retired as Captain for Trans World Airlines and was a member of the Quiet Birdmen. During his retirement, he was an active member of the Vista Valley Country Club.

Paul is survived by his wife of 54 years, Verna Dale (Stemple) Whitford. Their immediate family includes their son, Bob Whitford, Boston, Mass.; and daughter, Sharon Jenkins, San Marcos, Calif. Grandchildren include Amy Whitford, Wichita, Kan., and Jennifer and Heather Jenkins, San Marcos, Calif.

Paul loved his family, friends, fishing and golf.

A private service will be held at Meadowlark Community Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Meadowlark Community Church Building Fund, 1918 Redwing St., San Marcos, CA 92069.
