ROBERT E. ALLEE
LADY LAKE, Fla. - Robert Eugene Allee, 79, of Lady Lake, died Monday, Oct. 6, 1997 at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland.
Born April 14, 1918 in Des Moines, Iowa, he was the son of the late Albert and Anna (Mainberg) Allee.
He was a graduate of Drake University.
Mr. Allee was retired from the U.S. Air Force with 27 years' service. He had been a chief warrant officer, having served in World War II, Korea, and Viet Nam.
He was Roman Catholic by faith.
Mr. Allee was preceded in death by his wife, Blanche Marie (Morgenson) Allee.
Survivors include two sons, Michael M. Allee, Roanoke, Va., and George M. Allee, Fort Ashby; two grandchildren, Robert W. Allee and Elizabeth F. Allee, both of Fort Ashby.
Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, Route 28, Fort Ashby, on Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m.
Interment will be in the Florida National cemetery, Bushnell, Fla.
CLARA J. JAMES.
CUMBERLAND - Clara Jane James, 56, of Cumberland, died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 1997, at her residence.
Born May 30, 1940, in Mars, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Henry W. and Nina (Gongware) Wilson.
Mrs. James had worked locally as a hairdresser. For the past several years, she worked at The Medicine Shoppe as a pharmacist's assistant.
She was a life member of the First Congregational Welsh Church, New Castle, Pa., and belonged to the Ladies of the Railroad Unit at Ali Ghan Shrine.
Survivors include her husband of 37 years, David E. James; two sons, Douglas R. James, Hawthorne, Calif., and Rhys W. James and wife Shawnn, Cumberland; four grandchildren, Kailoni James and Rhys James, both of Hawthorne, Calif., and Kaylee James and Erika James, both of Cumberland; eight sisters, Ruth Graham, Ellwood City, Pa., Florence Cooper, Phoenix, Ariz., Maryann Minteer, Fombell, Pa., Helen Wiley, Ellwood City, Nina Wiley, New Castle, Judith Wise, Ellwood City, Sandy Hemphill, Los Angeles, Calif., Loine Williams, Panama City, Fla.; and three brothers, Raymond Wilson and Paul Wilson, both of Ellwood City, and George Wilson, Sandy Park, Pa.
Visitation will be a the George-Upchurch Funeral Home, Cumberland, on Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
The funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Sunday, Feb. 16, 1997, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Gary Barkley officiating.
Interment will take place at the Maryland State Veterans cemetery at Rocky Gap on Tuesday at 10 a.m.
FRANCES J. DURST
GRANTSVILLE - Frances Jean Durst, 63, of 308 Hare Hollow Road, Grantsville, died Wednesday, June 4, 1997, at her residence.
Born April 24, 1934, in Cumberland, she was a daughter of Alice (Dawson) Resh, Cumberland, and the late Paul Resh. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Clark Vernon Durst, in l982; a son, David Durst; a granddaughter, Amy Durst; and her twin sister, Freda Resh.
Mrs. Durst was a member of Jennings United Methodist Church. She was a volunteer at the Highland Thrift Shop, and was a volunteer cook for Jennings Senior Citizens and Jennings Head Start.
Surviving in addition to her mother, are three sons, Daniel Durst and William Durst, both of Grantsville, and James Durst, Accident; a daughter, Nancy Frantz, Grantsville; a brother, Daniel Resh, Grantsville; two sisters, Shirley Yommer and Judy Stanton, both of Grantsville; seven grandchildren, David Durst, Michael Durst, Jerri Frantz, April Frantz, Timothy Durst, Alexander Durst, and Corey Durst; and a great-grandson, Logan Durst.
Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Home, Grantsville, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Lee Williams and the Rev. Tim Fetterly officiating.
Interment will be in the Bittinger cemetery.
Pallbearers will be the nephews of Mrs. Durst.
EDGAR J. "SNOOK" FOOTEN
WESTERNPORT - Edgar Joseph "Snook" Footen, 84, of 431 Vine St., Westernport, died Saturday, Dec. 13, 1997, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland.
Born Oct. 28, 1913, in Westernport, he was the son of the late Thomas and Elizabeth (Dunn) Footen.
Mr. Footen retired from the Westvaco Corp. with 25 years of service, having worked in the finishing room. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a life member of Victory Post 155, American Legion, and a member of the El Fidel Club. He was a member of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, Westernport.
Surviving are his wife, Eleanor Lorraine (Dunk) Footen; one brother, Thomas Footen, McCoole; and one sister, Thelma Nichols, Westernport.
Friends will be received at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Matthew Riegel officiating.
At Mr. Footen's request, he will be cremated. Interment will be in the Philos cemetery.
Memorials may be directed to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.
ELIZABETH P. ALDERTON
TOWSON - Elizabeth Patsy (Penrod) Alderton, 87, formerly of Cumberland and Frostburg, died Wednesday, May 15, 1997, at St. Joseph's Hospital, Towson.
Born Oct. 17, 1909, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Zora Penrod and George Penrod. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne Alderton, and her niece, Jean Merritt.
Mrs. Alderton was a 1928 graduate of Allegany High School. She was formerly employed at Curl's Camera Shop, Cumberland. The shop was owned by her brother, Louis Curl.
Surviving are a nephew, Robb Merritt; a niece, Nancy Haigly; and her dear friend, Esther Rose Ayers, who was her neighbor for over 20 years.
Funeral services were held Friday, May 16, 1997, at Ruck Funeral Home, Towson.
Interment was in the family burial plot at Hillcrest cemetery, Cumberland.
JAMES M. HOLMES
WESTERNPORT - James M. Holmes, 75, of Grand View Apartments, Westernport, died Friday, July 18, 1997, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland.
Born October 1, 1911, in Lonaconing, he was a son of the late James and Matilda (McElvie) Holmes. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn (Plummer) Holmes, four brothers and two sisters.
Mr. Holmes was a U.S. Marine veteran of World War II. He was employed by the Celanese Corporation and retired as an agent for Mutual of Omaha Insurance Company. He was a member of Farrady Post No. 24 American Legion.
Surviving are one sister, Elizabeth H. Gephart, Lonaconing; and two nieces.
Mr. Holmes requested that his body be donated to the Anatomy Board of Maryland.
FRANK L. CASTEEL
CUMBERLAND - Frank Leroy Casteel, 75, of Cumberland, died Tuesday, June 17, 1997, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born Jan. 7, 1922, in Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Mitchell and Martha Casteel. He also was preceded in death by his wife Agnes Casteel, March 5, 1987; one daughter, Debra Nau, May 5, 1996; two brothers; and three sisters.
Mr. Casteel was a retired driver for Astor Cab Company. He attended Friendship Haven in Cumberland.
Surviving are one daughter, Ramona Schadt, Bedford, Pa.; four grandchildren, Sherry Walters, Amy Schadt, Mitchell Walters, Louis Schadt III; and one great-grandchild, Shanee Lee. Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Thursday at 11 a.m. with Pastor Floyd Bender officiating.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
