NAJIB C. MEHANNA
CUMBERLAND - Najib C. Mehanna, 91, of Cumberland, died Friday, May 9, 1997, at Lions Manor Nursing Home.
Born Jan. 16, 1906, in Lebanon, he was the son of the late Chedid and Labiba Mehanna. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Sabbath (Abu-Fahd) Mehanna; and two brothers, Farid Mehanna, and Toufic Mehanna.

Mr. Mehanna was a self-employed welder in Lebanon. He was a Catholic by faith.

Surviving are two sons, George Mehanna and wife Souad, Dearborn, Mich., Dr. John Mehanna and wife Renade, Cumberland; one daughter, Yvonne Franji and husband George, Lebanon; two sisters, Adele Zgheib, and Outi Zgheib, both of Lebanon; ten grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

A Christian wake service will be conducted on Monday evening at the funeral home.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with Father Frank Brauer officiating.

Interment will be in St. Mary's cemetery.

The family requests contributions be made to the Sacred Heart Hospital Foundation.

JANICE D. "JAN" MELLON
LAVALE - Janice D. "Jan" Mellon, 51, of LaVale, died Tuesday, April 22, 1997, at the Georgetown University Hospital, Washington, D.C.
Born May 24, 1945, at Keyser, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Claude M. and Grace E. (Thomas) Mellon.

Jan was employed as a freelance court reporter and as a field representative for the National Opinion Research Center. She was a member of the Women's Circle and the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Greater Cumberland and was currently attending Allegany College.

Jan enjoyed nature, was an enthusiastic gardner, and was devoted to her children and grandchildren.

Surviving are three sons, Thomas Sawyers and wife Tracie, Cumberland, Dean Sawyers and wife Kelley, Piedmont, W.Va., and Carson Reinhart, at home; four brothers, Ernesto C. Mellon Sr. and wife Betty, New Kent, Va., Ricardo Mellon and wife Kay, Keyser, W.Va., James V. Mellon and wife Madeline, Baltimore, and Roger D. Mellon and wife Kathleen, McCoole; one sister, Maris C. Caldwell and husband Jim, Keyser, W.Va.; five grandchildren, Jennifer Sawyers, Frostburg, Charity Flaskamp, Cumberland, Tessa Sawyers, Cumberland, David Grady, Piedmont, W.Va., and Lacey Sawyers, Piedmont, W.Va; a special friend, Don Cage, LaVale; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Rotruck-Smith Funeral Home, Keyser, on Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home chapel on Sunday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Sumner D. Sawyers officiating.

Interment will be in the Thomas Family cemetery, Pinnacle Road, Elk Garden, W.Va.

JOHN J. MELLON
BALTIMORE - John J. Mellon, 70, formerly of Cumberland, died Saturday, March 22, 1997, at Harbor Medical Center, Baltimore.
Born July 26, 1926, in Cumberland, he was a son of the late Catherine (Weaverling) and James Mellon. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Hilda (Hamilton) Mellon; his brother, Charles; and four sisters, Margaret, Mary, Maryland, and Eleanora.

Surviving are three sons, Johnny, Greg and Mike; three daughters, Darlene Reiner, Trudy Monczewski, and Theresa Ward; eight grandchildren; and one great grandchild; two sisters, Sister Mary Conrad Mellon OSU, and Maxine Howser; and one brother, James Mellon. Funeral services will be at St. Rose of Lima Church Wednesday at 10 a.m.

Interment will be in Cedar Hill cemetery.

GEORGIA N. MENGES
CUMBERLAND - Georgia Naomi Menges, 77, of Cumberland died Saturday, Oct. 11, 1997 at her home.
Born July 24, 1920 in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Frederick Alexander Boyd and the late Elsie May (Keiter) Boyd.

Mrs. Menges was a homemaker. She was a member of the McKinley Chapter #12 Order of Eastern Star, Telephone Pioneers, and AARP. She also was a member of Kingsley United Methodist Church, where she was very active on a number of committees including: United Methodist Women, Faithful Workers Sunday School Class, Church Council, Honorary Member Church Council, Health and Welfare Committee Coordinator, Parsonage Committee, Finance Committee (1992), Council on Ministries, and Pastor/Parish Relations Committee (1986).

Georgia was a skilled seamstress, enjoyed her flower gardening, and worked with a number of crafts to include calligraphy and chair caning. After retirement, she and her husband, "Doady," enjoyed extensive bus travel across the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii.

Surviving are husband, Devon "Doady" Roy Menges; two daughters, Judith A. Menges, and Starr N. Cheney and husband Jack, all of Cumberland; a brother, Fred A. Boyd and wife Geny, Bedford, Pa.; two grandchildren, Jason T. Cheney and wife Christine, who attends Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, Tenn., and Jantia Cheney, who attends Hood College, Frederick; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, 404 Decatur St., Cumberland on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Kingsley United Methodist Church with the Rev. Richard Jewell officiating.

Pallbearers will be Gary Boyd, Larry Gourley, Dan Stillwagon, Don Leap, Charles Waltman and Jim McGettigan.

Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.

McKinley Chapter #12 O.E.S. will conduct a memorial service Monday at 7:30 p.m. Family requests that memorials be made to Kingsley United Methodist Church.

NORMAN B. MERCER
ST. JOSEPH, Ill. - Norman B. Mercer, 58, of St. Joseph, passed away Oct. 10, 1997 at Urbana, Ill.
He was born Jan. 18, 1939 at Urbana, son of George and Marge Lee Mercer, who preceded him in death.

He married Dorothy McCarty on April 29, 1960 at Cumberland. She survives along with two sons, Craig Mercer, Rankin, Ill., and Scott Mercer, Allerton, Ill.; and three grandchildren.

Mr. Mercer was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served aboard the U.S.S. John Paul Jones DD 932. He retired from the University of Illinois Printing Services. He was a member of Western Star Masonic Lodge, Champaign, Ill.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Freese Funeral Home, 302 East Grand, St. Joseph, on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m.

Interment will be in Grandview Memorial Gardens, Champaign.

Memorials may be sent to St. Malachy School, Rantoul, Ill., or to Salt Fork Forest Preserve, Homer Lake, Homer, Ill.

GERTRUDE V. MERRBACH
CUMBERLAND - Gertrude V. "Dutch" Merrbach, 74, of 204 Union St., Cumberland, formerly of Gilmore, died Sunday, March 2, 1997, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland.
Born March 17, 1921, in McCoole, she was a daughter of the late George Raymond Spriggs and the late Laura H. (Dawson) Spriggs. She also was preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Mrs. Merrbach formerly operated Dutch's Tavern in Gilmore for 25 years, and was co-operator with her husband of Dutch's Novelty in Cumberland for 25 years. She was a member of Saint Josephs Catholic Church, Midland; the Ladies Auxiliary of the Moose 271; and Ladies Auxiliary of the Eagles 245, both in Cumberland.

Surviving are her husband, Eugene Pat Merrbach; one son, Eugene P. Merrbach Jr. and wife Patricia, Frostburg; and two grandchildren, Renae and Greg Merrbach.

Friends will be received at the Boal Funeral Home, Lonaconing, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be at the funeral home on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with Sister Joan Maenner, pastoral life director of Saint Josephs Church, officiating.

Interment will be in Saint Josephs cemetery, Midland.

CLYSTA V. PIPER
OLDTOWN - Clysta V. Piper, of Oldtown, died Saturday, March 29, 1997, at Memorial Hospital.
Born Aug. 1, 1913, in Oldtown, she was the daughter of the late James and Belle (Carter) Shaw. She also was preceded in death by her first husband, Ernest L. Davis; two sons, James and Kenneth Davis; and a sister, Erma Yonker.

Mrs. Piper was a homemaker, and a member of the Bethel Assembly of God Church in Oldown.

Surviving are her husband, Wilbur H. "Bill" Piper; three sons, Ernest and Thomas Davis, Cumberland, and Wesley Davis, Oldtown; four daughters, Mary Fochtman, Hyndman, Pa., Frances Shanholtzer and Jean Adams, both of Short Gap, W.Va., and Jane Stonestreet, Flintstone; three brothers, Ross Shaw, Cumberland, Henry Shaw, Philadelphia, and Raymond Shaw, Baltimore; one sister, Dorothy, of Ohio; 24 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday at 1 p.m. with Pastor Richard Wilson officiating.

Burial will be in the Oliver Grove cemetery.
