GRETCHEN L. SMITH
CUMBERLAND - Gretchen Louise Smith, 74, of 14243 Cunningham Drive, SW, Cumberland, died March 2, 1997, at her home.
Born June 12, 1922, in York, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Rev. George Baughman and Grace (Speidel) Baughman.

Mrs. Smith was a former employee of the Celanese Corporation of America. She was a member of Central Assembly of God Church.

Surviving are her husband, Darald "D-D" Ira Smith, Cumberland; one daughter, Sharon Prifogle and husband, John, Glen Burnie; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, 404 Decatur Street, Cumberland, on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be held there on Thursday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Gary Butler officiating. Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Park.

HERBERT R. SMITH
CUMBERLAND - Herbert R. "Smitty" Smith, 62, of Cumberland, died Friday, Feb. 21, 1997, at the Hospice Unit of Memorial Hospital.
Born July 12, 1934, in Frostburg, he was the son of the late James Smith and Helen (Lavin) Smith. He also was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul Smith and James D. Smith and one sister, Katherine Hardy.

Mr. Smith was a bus driver for the Allegany County Transit Authority for 32 years. He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the "Icebreaker" U.S.S. Edisto during "Operation Deep Freeze," which was the first expedition to the South Pole.

Surviving are his stepmother, Maxine Smith, Clarysville; his wife, Mary Ellen (Usoris) Smith; one son, William Smith and wife, Brenda, Virginia Beach, Va.; four daughters, Vicky Robertson and husband, Charles, Cumberland; Kim Fost and husband, Greg, Cresaptown; Helen Mazuran and husband, John, Flintstone; Stephanie Logsdon, Frostburg; five sisters, Gertrude Brode, Frostburg; Elsie LaRue, Frostburg; Eleanor Murphy and husband, William, Woodbridge, Va.; Helen Louise Long, Salisbury; Paula Moore and husband, Bob, Clarysville; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and a special friend, Mr. "B."

Friends will be received at the Leasure-Stein Funeral Home on Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Vernon Busch, O.F.M. Cap., and the Rev. Stephen M. Schuessler officiating. Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens, LaVale, where military honors will be accorded by the Local Combined Military Honor Guard.

Pallbearers will be Wayne Lewis, Shannon Robertson, Al Bennett, John Green, Charles Miller and Steve Grogg.

ISAAC J. SMITH
CUMBERLAND - Isaac J. "Ike" Smith, 90, of Greene Street, Cumberland, died Tuesday, June 10, 1997, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born May 13, 1907, in Lonaconing, he was the son of the late Thomas A. and Margaret J. (Bradburn) Smith. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Mr. Smith was retired from the Allegany County Tax Office. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of Kingsley United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Emma W. Smith, and several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, 108 Virginia Ave., Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., and at the church one hour prior to the service.

Services will be conducted at Kingsley United Methodist Church Friday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Richard H. Jewell officiating.

Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park, Cumberland.

The family requests that contributions be directed to Kingsley United Methodist Church, 248 Williams St., Cumberland, MD 21502.

LAWRENCE C. SMITH
CUMBERLAND - Lawrence C. Smith, 84, of Cumberland, and formerly of Flintstone, died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 1997, at his home.
Born July 8, 1913, on Green Ridge Mountain, Flintstone, he was the son of the late Lewis T. Smith and Tena (Poole) Smith. He also was preceded in death by one sister, Alvena Catterton; and two brothers, Allen and Paul Smith.

Mr. Smith retired in 1976 as a carpenter for the S.J. Groves Construction Company. He was a member of the Carpenters Local #1024; a member of First United Methodist Church; and a former member of the Flintstone United Methodist Church, where he served on the Administrative Board; a life member of the Flintstone Volunteer Fire Department, serving as President from 1956-1961; and was inducted into the Allegany and Garrett Counties Firemen's Hall of Fame. He also was a member of the Fort Cumberland Lodge #211 AF & AM; Cumberland Scottish Rite Bodies; Ali Ghan Shrine Club; a Member and Trustee for the Social Retirement Club of Allegany County; and the AARP of Allegany County Chapter #2400.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, M. Dorothy (House) Smith; one son, James L. "Larry" Smith and wife, Donna, Flintstone; a granddaughter, Robin (Smith) Myers and husband, Jack, Hagerstown; and two step-grandsons, Michael and Todd Pertko, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; one sister, Elva Davidson and husband, Harry, Albermarle, N.C.; and four brothers, Kimmel Smith and wife, Mina, Flintstone, Leo Smith and wife, Dottie, Pasadena, Ira Grant Smith and wife, Marie, Centerville, Pa., and Grayson Smith and wife, Muriel, Westminster; and many nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, 404 Decatur Street, Cumberland, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A service will be conducted on Friday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Associate Pastor C. Lee Brotemarkle and the Rev. Robert L. Nair officiating. Interment will be in Hillcrest Burial Park. Honorary pallbearers will be: Robert Buck, Delmar Kilmer, Arthur Lakin, and Tom Gottschalk. Pallbearers will be Ronald Smith, Leo Smith, Jr., Vernon Smith, Arnold Smith, Jack Myers, Melvin Fletcher, Michael Pertko, and Todd Pertko. Memorials may be made to: Flintstone Volunteer Fire Department; Flintstone United Methodist Church; or to First United Methodist Church.

A memorial service will be conducted by the Flintstone Volunteer Fire Department on Wednesday at 8:30 p.m.

LEO A. SMITH
CUMBERLAND - Leo Albert Smith, 85, of Cumberland, died Saturday, March 8, 1997, at his residence after a lengthy illness.
Born June 11, 1911, in Cumberland, he was the youngest of eight children of the late Joseph Smith and Rose (Hall) Smith.

A lifelong resident of Cumberland, he served his country with the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. Smith was employed by the Cumberland Post Office before retiring in 1972. He was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.

Surviving are one niece, Laura Williams Bennett and husband Jerry, Vienna, Va.; and three nephews, Edward Smith Johnson and wife Helen, Ijamsville, Strephon H. Johnson, Baltimore, and Bertram H. Johnson, Cumberland.

Friends will be received at the Leasure-Stein Funeral Home, Cumberland, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church on Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. with the Rev. Vance Pastorius, O.F.M., Cap., officiating.

Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Military honors will be accorded at the graveside by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.

MARGARET S. SMITH
ROCKVILLE - Margaret S. Smith, 93, of the National Lutheran Home, Rockville, formerly of Columbia Street, Cumberland, died Tuesday, May 27, 1997, in Rockville.
She was born May 3, 1904, in Keyser, W.Va. She was preceded in death by her husband, William A. Smith.

Mrs. Smith was educated in the public schools in Keyser, W.Va., and attended Potomac State College. She was a teacher in the Mineral County, W.Va., and Garrett County schools. She was also employed at Peskin's Clothing Store, Cumberland.

She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Cumberland, where she was a member of the choir and the Queen Esther Group.

Surviving are a son, Michael A. Smith, Severna Park, Md., a granddaughter, Zoe M. Crawford, La Jolla, Calif.; three nieces, Betty Ullery, Nita Keller and Mary Higgs, all of Cumberland; and a great niece, Patricia Royce, Cumberland.

A memorial service will be held at the National Lutheran Home Chapel, Rockville, on Friday at 11 a.m.

An additional memorial service will be held at St. John's Lutheran Church, Fourth and Arch Streets, Cumberland, on Monday at 11 a.m.

Interment will follow in the Queen's Point cemetery, Keyser, W.Va.

The family requests memorial contributions be made in her name to the National Lutheran Home for the Aged, 9701 Veirs Drive, Rockville, MD 20850.

The Hysong Funeral Home, Washington, D.C., is in charge of the arrangements.

MARTHA L. SMITH
SHAFT - Martha L. Smith, 83, of Shaft, died Sunday, May 11, 1997, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland.
Born Sept. 27, 1913, in Gilmore, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Henry and Margaret (McFarland) Lancaster. She also was preceded in death by her husband, William Henry Smith, in 1965.

Mrs. Smith was a former employee of the Celanese Corp. She was a member of God's Ark of Safety, and the Care Group of the church.

Surviving are one brother, William M. Lancaster, Shaft; and two sisters, Wilma L. Tharp, Shaft, and Jennie L. Scott, Grahamtown. She was a mother and grandmother to many nieces and nephews, and many others.

Friends will be received at God's Ark of Safety, Frostburg, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at God's Ark of Safety on Tuesday at 1 p.m. with Pastor J. Richard Greene and Pastor Everett J. Spence officiating.

Interment will be in Frostburg Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Stephen Kreger, Barry Lancaster, Christopher Lancaster, John E. Lancaster, David Robertson and Jeffrey Tharp.

Honorary pallbearers will be Kenneth Lancaster and Daniel Tharp.

The family requests that memorials be directed to God's Ark of Safety, Frostburg.

The Scarpelli Funeral Home, Cresaptown, is in charge of arrangements.
