Powley, Carl D.

Carl D. Powley, 67, of Church Creek passed away on Thursday, May 6, 2010 at his home. He was born in Cambridge on December 18, 1942 and was a son of Rosa Mae Parks Pritchett and the late Carlton O’Neill Powley.

He attended schools in South Dorchester. Mr. Powley had worked as a waterman for most of his life working on various dredge boats as well as crabbing and tonging. Mr. Powley had attended Toddville United Methodist Church. He had been in failing health since early April when he passed away at his home.

He is survived by a daughter Beverly Powley of Wingate, a son Carlie D. Powley, Jr. of Cambridge, a granddaughter Michelle Robinson, three great grandchildren Sierra Tippett, McKayla Robinson and Austin Robinson, his mother Rosa Mae Pritchett of Cambridge, one sister Peggy MacLauchlan of Cambridge, two aunts Doris Abbott and Carolyn Custis, two uncles Marvin Parks and Reginald Powley and two nieces Lisa Todd of Cambridge and Lanai Riggin and several cousins. He is also survived by two special friends Billy Newcomb and Pat Elzey.

A gathering of family and friends will be held on the lawn at 2932 Lakesville Road, on Sunday, May 16, 2010 from 2 to 4 p.m. If it is raining the day of the gathering, it will be held at the Lakes and Straits Fire Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Coastal Hospice Foundation, P.O. Box 1733, Salisbury, MD 21802 or Lakes and Straits Vol. Fire Company, 2103 Farm Creek Road, Wingate, MD 21675. Arrangements are in the care of the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.

Davidson, Evelyn J.

Evelyn Jean Davidson, 65, of East New Market passed away on Thursday, September 30, 2010 at Dorchester General Hospital after a long illness. She was born in Cambridge on November 30, 1944 and was a daughter of the late John R. and Mary Audrey Adams Phillips.

Evelyn attended and graduated from South Dorchester High School class of 1962. She and her daughter also attended and graduated in 1996 with honors from Chesapeake College receiving their AA Degrees in Paralegal Studies. She worked in several occupational fields including positions at Home Beneficial Life Insurance Company, Princess Lanes Bowling Alley, and was the owner of Craft Corner in downtown Cambridge. Evelyn also worked for the Dorchester County District Court, Mid Shore Well Drilling and was the Town Clerk for the Town of East New Market during four different administrations until she retired due to health reasons in 2007. She enjoyed many forms of crafting, but was especially talented in sewing and quilting. She was devoted to her family and pets and was an avid reader of crime mysteries. She had a great passion for life and laughter and was loved by all who knew her.

She is survived by a daughter Tammy L. Burns and fiancée Chip Fleming of East New Market, a brother John R. “Jackie” Phillips and wife Linda of Golden Hill and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Ms. Davidson is preceded in death by a sister Connie Perry and two special aunts Helen and Gertrude Adams.

Pallbearers will be Robert Insley, Chris Nagel, Lingan Spicer, Denny Todd, Greg Wampler and Hugh Carter Vinson.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, October 4, 2010 at 1 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Rev. Joe Kelley officiating. Burial will follow at East New Market Cemetery. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Kitty City Rescue, P.O. Box 1259, Cambridge, MD 21613 or to the East New Market Volunteer Fire Company Building Fund, P.O. Box 280, East New Market, MD 21631.

Akers, Bertha Mae

Bertha Mae Akers, 81, of Cambridge passed away on Monday, November 29, 2010 at Mallard Bay Care Center. She was born in Watauga County, NC on February 23, 1929 and was a daughter of the late Mack and Esther McCroskey Coffey.

When she was eight years old she moved to Mercer County, W. VA., where she attended Matoaka High School. On October 7, 1946 she married Vencil G. Akers. Mrs. Akers worked at Dorchester General Hospital for 31 years, where she worked as Admissions Supervisor for 13 years and in the billing department. She retired Dec. 27, 1997. She enjoyed country and gospel music, shopping, gardening, reading, computer and the love of her family. Mrs. Akers was a member of the First Baptist Church in Cambridge for many years.

She is survived by her husband of 64 years Vencil G. Akers of Cambridge, one daughter Teresa Mayo and husband Chip of Raleigh, NC, grandchildren Renee Akers and fiancée Tom Murphy, Rebecca Dodson and husband John and Jenna Smith and husband Jonathan, Will Mayo, Andrew Mayo, Allie Mayo and Julie Mayo, great grandchildren Ryan Akers, Jack Dodson and Peyton Smith, two sisters Margaret Farley and Virginia Bailey, a brother Steven Coffey and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Mrs. Akers is preceded in death by a son Jerry Akers, two brothers Lonnie R. Coffey and Edward Coffey and a sister Nellie Coffey.

Honorary pallbearers will be Mark Robbins, Kenny Robbins, Robin Hall, Brandon Hall, Bobby Hughes, Wylie Burton and Wallace Willon.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, December 2, 2010 at 2 p.m. at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery Chapel with Rev. Steven A. Trice officiating. There will be no viewing. Memorial contributions can be made to the First Baptist Church, 501 Glenburn Ave., Cambridge, MD 21613 or Faith Baptist Fellowship, 108 Teal Lane, Cambridge, MD 21613. Arrangements are in the care of the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.

Robbins, Dolores N.

Dolores N. Robbins, 50, of Trappe passed away on Monday, April 5, 2010 at Mallard Bay Care Center. She was born in Rota, Spain on September 4, 1959 and was a daughter of Donald L. and Connie Bejarano Nickerson.

Dolores graduated from Cambridge South Dorchester High School class 1977. She worked at Western Publishing Company and later at David Wheeler in Easton. On March 20, 1982 she married Woody Robbins. She enjoyed playing bingo and going to the slots.

She is survived by her husband Woody Robbins of Trappe; two children Donald James Robbins of Las Vegas, Nevada and Corbett L. Robbins of Trappe; her parents Donald L. and Connie B. Nickerson of Cambridge; a sister Anna Willey and husband Mike of Cambridge; an aunt Janice Pritchett of Salisbury; two nieces and two nephews; mother in law Nancy Robbins of Robbins, a sister in law Cindy Jones and a brother in law Paul Jones of East New Market and special friends Jeff and Valerie Robbins and Tom and Debbie Brannock. She is preceded in death by a daughter Sophia A. Robbins.

Pallbearers will be Jeff Robbins, Scott Jones, Michael Willey, Jr., Steve Gowe, Kevin Smith and Scott McGlaughlin.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 8, 2010 at noon at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Rev. A. Delmer Willey, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery near Hurlock. Family will receive friends on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Thursday.

Mills, Thomas M.

Thomas Meade Mills of Golden Hill passed away on July 5, 2010 at Dorchester General Hospital. He was 71. He was born January 30, 1939, the youngest child of Preston and Sara (Sadie) Gore Mills.

He attended Dorchester County schools, and while at South Dorchester High School, he loved to run track. On April 17, 1982 he married the former Barbara Moore. He was a trapper, waterman, and loved all aspects of the outdoors. He skinned in the “Old Timer’s” competition at the Outdoor Show for years. He loved to cook, especially the “down home cooking” of the area. He enjoyed being able to do for others, whether cooking, working in the churches, or being there for his family and friends. He was a member of Bounds United Methodist Church, but attended St John’s United Methodist Church, and the churches of St. Thomas Charge. He will be remembered as a man who loved his family.

He is survived by his wife Barbara Moore Mills of Golden Hill and three daughters Mrs. Karen Oberender of Bishops Head, Carey Bess Mills of East New Market, and Mary Shea Mills of Golden Hill. He is also survived by three grandchildren Megan Newman, Jennifer Oberender, and Zachary Oberender of Bishops Head, two sisters, Mrs. Nellie M. Flowers and Mrs. Edythe M. Thomas, several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews and many loyal friends. He is preceded in death by five brothers and a sister James Gilbert Mills of Golden Hill, Preston Hamilton Mills of Golden Hill, John Wilson Mills of Toddville, Mrs. Clara Wilhemina Mills Meredith of Toddville, Dewey Shriver Mills of Golden Hill and Arthur Gore Mills of Toddville.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, July 9, 2010 at 2 p.m. at St. John’s United Methodist Church at Golden Hill with Rev. Gary L. Crouch officiating. Burial will follow at the adjoining churchyard. Family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. at the church. Memorial contributions can be made to a charity of one’s choice. Arrangements are in the care of the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.

Cole, Alice May

Alice May Cole, 82 of Cambridge, passed away at the Mallard Bay Care Center in Cambridge on Friday, June 25, 2010. She was born in Cambridge on August 21, 1927, and was a daughter of the late Herbert Lee and Marguerite Frances Phillips Harper.

She attended schools in Cambridge. She had lived at Snow Hill for a number of years. She had been a resident at the Mallard Bay Care Center for several years where she passed away on Friday morning

Survivors include a son Marion Pusey of Salisbury, one sister Sally Frampton of Cambridge She was preceded in death by a brother Walter Lee Harper.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday afternoon at 12:00 PM at the Cambridge Cemetery with the Rev. William A. Davis officiating. Arrangements are being handled by the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.

Fitzgerald, William L.

Air Force

William L. Fitzgerald, 83, of East New Market passed away on Tuesday, April 13, 2010 at The Pines in Easton. He was born at Riverside Farm near Aireys on March 7, 1927 and was a son of the late Olin H. Willey and Marion L. Stevens.

Mr. Fitzgerald attended schools at East New Market and Hurlock. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1950 until 1951. In September of 1954 he married the former June B. Jones. She passed away on June 11, 1993. Mr. Fitzgerald worked for Triangle Oil Company at Easton for 37 years as sales supervisor and expediter.

Pallbearers will be Kevin Hoffman, Bunky Bell, Art Wilkerson, Tom Pleasants, Donald Jones and Theodore Cephas.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, April 16, 2010 at 11 a.m. at Dorchester Memorial Park with Rev. William Davis officiating. Memorial contributions can be made in his name to the East New Market Volunteer Fire Company Building Fund, P.O. Box 280, East New Market, MD 21631. Arrangements are in the care of the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.

Morse, Darlene C.

Darlene C. Morse, 62 of Cambridge, MD, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday September 18, 2010. She was born in Cambridge, New York on July 13, 1948, and was a daughter of the late Joseph and Dorothy Frank Canzeri.

Darlene graduated from Cambridge Central School in New York in 1966 and attended Russell Sage College in Troy, New York. On April 25, 1969 she married Richard S. Morse. They spent many happy years raising their family in Queensbury, NY.

Darlene and Richard have made their home in Cambridge, MD since 1997. After moving to Cambridge, Darlene worked at a number of pre-schools in the area and found great joy in reading, singing, and teaching children. Darlene was affectionately known as “Ms. Dee” amongst the local children. She enjoyed gardening, long walks, traveling, bicycling along the Choptank River, reading, and completing crossword puzzles. Music was one of her greatest joys. Darlene loved spending time with friends and family, especially her five darling grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband Richard S. Morse, Sr. of Cambridge, MD, two daughters Amy M. Frolish and her husband Peter J. Frolish of Schuylerville, NY, Megan M. Holthoff and her husband Daryl E. Holthoff of Cambridge, MD, one son, R. Schuyler Morse, Jr. and his wife Seema D. Morse of Silver Spring, MD, five grandchildren Sebastian Frolish, Christian Frolish, Ava Holthoff, Amelia Holthoff and Nikhil Morse, six sisters Jo Anne Crawford of Granville, NY, Victoria Canzeri of Cambridge, NY, Gwendolyn Hall of Johnsonville, NY, Beth Bell of Cambridge, NY, Virginia Munoz of Manchester, CT and Tina Canzeri of Cambridge, NY and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday morning at Zion United Methodist Church in Cambridge, MD with the Rev. William R. Davis officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Coastal Hospice Foundation, P.O. Box 1733, Salisbury, MD 21802 or to Pancreatic Cancer Action Network 2141 Rosecrans Ave – Suite 7000 El Sugundo, CA 90245. Arrangements are being handled by the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge MD.

A service of remembrance will be held at a later date in Darlene’s hometown of Cambridge, NY.
