Soper, Flora Jane

Flora Jane Todd Soper of Easton, Maryland, died Sunday, August 29, 2010, at her home. She was 92 years old.

Born in Baltimore, MD on May 18, 1918, Mrs. Soper was the daughter of the late Charles S. Todd and Flora Wallace Kirkpatrick Todd.

Mrs. Soper is survived by her brother, John K. Todd of Easton, MD and two sons: Todd K. Vaughan of Baltimore, MD and Randy M. Vaughan of Red Bank, NJ; 4 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sister, Lenore Peters.

Her first marriage to Richard Vaughan ended in a divorce. Her second marriage was to Brian Soper who passed away in 2001. Mr. Soper was from the Isle of Wight England. He was a Cambridge graduate and a member of the British Air Force and the British Intelligence Service.

Mr. Soper was a true academic and was fluent in 7 languages including Ancient Greek. Mrs. Soper attended the Master's School in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. and graduated from Finch College in NYC. She had lived all over the world from Japan to Lebanon and especially the Isle of Wight in England. Her last 10 years of her life she was completely blind yet she managed to commute between San Diego and Easton every three months.

A graveside service will be 11:30 Saturday, September 11, 2010, at the Old Wye Church Cemetery in Wye Mills, MD.

The family suggests, in lieu of flowers, for friends to send memorial donations to the Talbot Hospice Foundation, 586 Cynwood Drive, Easton, MD 21601.

Minamoto, Beatrice Mae

Beatrice Mae Minamoto of Denton, MD went home to be with her Lord on Saturday, October 16, 2010 at the William Hill Manor in Easton, MD. She was 77 years old.

Born in Boston, MA, Bea was the daughter of the late Nathan French and Vergie Grace Rowan French. Bea was the beloved wife of Ben Minamoto of Denton.

She will be greatly missed by her five children: Wayne Phillips and his wife Melanie of Tallman, N.Y., Jeff Phillips and his wife Sue of Monsey, N.Y., Cynthia Thomas and her husband Nick of Greensboro, MD, Diane Jenkins and her husband Ray of Dagsboro, DE, Kimberly Dyar and her husband David of Newark, DE.; nine grandchildren: Rebecca Jenkins, Joseph Church, Johnathan Church, Jeremy Church, Justin Phillips, Meghan Phillips, Derek Phillips, Cory Phillips, Casey Palumbo; seven great grandchildren; her sister, BetteLou Ehrlich; and many nieces and nephews.

Bea moved from New York to Greensboro, MD in 1972 and will be remembered as a former owner of the Riverside Hotel. Restoring the hotel and restaurant to a successful and well-known enterprise was a major achievement. She also worked in managerial positions in the food industry for many years at various businesses on the Eastern Shore.

She was an accomplished and published author of stories and poetry. She loved working outdoors and enjoyed creating and caring for her plant and flower gardens. She never encountered a weed that was left in the ground. Her home was filled with family, friends, love and good food.

Bea had a close walk with God that was a source of strength, comfort and joy to her. She would share her faith with any and all. Worshipping and serving at the Gloryland Tabernacle was a vital part of her life. She will be greatly missed but will live forever in our hearts.

A celebration of her life will be 11 AM Thursday, October 21st, at the Moore Funeral Home, P.A., 12 S. Second St. in Denton where friends may call from 6 until 8 on Wednesday evening. The interment will be in the Denton Cemetery, 24865 Meeting House Road in Denton.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests for friends to send memorial donations to the Gloryland Tabernacle, 1003 Camp Road, Denton, MD 21629.

White, Joseph F.

Joseph F. White, Jr. of Greensboro, MD, died Saturday, September 04, 2010, at the Memorial Hospital in Easton, MD. He was 90 years old.

Born in Ridgely, MD, Mr. White was the son of the late Joseph Floyd White, Sr. and Hilda Wilhelmina Kershaw Wirts. He had lived in Caroline County all of his life. His wife, Maude Lorraine Gottwals White, died March 20, 2005.

Mr. White was in the US Navy during WWII, serving in the Pacific on the Battleship USS New Mexico. He was a lifetime member of the American Battleship Association and the USS New Mexico Association. He had been a partner with Walls and White Garage in Goldsboro until he retired in the late 1980's. He was also a carpenter.

Mr. White is survived by three daughters: Alma L. Dean of Onancock, VA, Ruth F. Thawley of Price, MD, and Judith F. Wright of Denton, MD; one son: James M. Frase-White of Northfield, NH; a sister: Josephine E. Wooters of American Corner, MD; 10 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. In addition to his wife, Mr. White is preceded in death by one son, John Frase; one brother, Charles White; and one sister: Hilda Willis.

Funeral services will be 2 o'clock Tuesday, September 7th, at the Moore Funeral Home, 12 S. Second Street in Denton where friends may call from 6 until 8 on Monday evening. The interment will be in the Greensboro Cemetery in Greensboro, MD.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests for friends to send memorial donations to the Calvary Baptist Church, 1120 Market St., Denton, MD 21629.

Morris, John

John Morris III of Denton, Maryland, died Wednesday, July 14, 2010, at his home. Known as "Baby Boy", he was 59 years old.

Born in Pennsylvania on December 25, 1950, Mr. Morris was the son of the late John Morris II and Anna Virginia Corkell Hoggard.

Mr. Morris worked for Chesapeake Thermo King in Delmar, DE as a trailer mechanic. Previously, he had worked for Preston Trucking for 11 years. He was a US Army veteran, serving twelve years with multiple tours of duty in Vietnam. In addition to his love for fishing and crabbing, he was a long-time active member of the Caroline American Legion Post 29, the Federalsburg VFW Post 5246, and the Camden-Wyoming Moose Lodge No.203.

Mr. Morris is survived by his beloved wife, Shirley Morris of Denton; one son, John W. Morris of Oakland, MD; one daughter, Patience Morris of Denton; one stepson, Donald Lord of Denton; two brothers: Jimmy Lahman of Easton, MD and Ronnie Lahman of Easton; five sisters: Peggy Lahman of Ocean City, MD, Diane Curtis of Atlanta, VA, Dorothy Krumm of Camden, DE, Judy Sortino of Centreville, MD, and Fran Morris of Felton, DE; and his best friend, Jerry Alvey. He was preceded in death by two brothers: Melvin Hoggard and Roger Hoggard.

Funeral services will be 11 AM Monday, July 19th, at the Moore Funeral Home, P.A., 12 S. Second St. in Denton where friends may call one hour prior to the service. The interment will be private in the MD Eastern Shore Veteran's Cemetery near Hurlock, MD.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests for friends to send memorial donations to the family to defer funeral expenses in care of Moore Funeral Home, P.A., 12 S. Second St., Denton, MD 21629.

Dayman, Theodore John

Theodore John Dayman of Denton, MD, died Friday, October 29, 2010, at the University of MD Medical Center in Baltimore. A memorial service will be private.

Baker, Mary Emily

M. Emily (Emma) Baker of Denton Maryland died on July 14, 2010. She was 93 years old.

She was the daughter of the late Beniah L. Baker and Esther Poole Baker, formerly of Denton.

She was employed at the Denton Primary School for 23 years, following which she worked as a companion and domestic for friends. She was an active volunteer at the Samaritan House in Denton. She loved reading the Star Democrat and Readers Digest when they arrived.

She is survived by 2 nieces, Joyce Andrew of Denton and Catherine Saragino of Greenwood, and 5 nephews, Alan Baker of Columbia, MD, Rev. Earle N. Baker pastor of Avenue Methodist Church in Milford DE, DeWilliam (Bill) Moore, Louis Thomas (Tom) Moore, Daniel Lee (Danny) Moore all of Delaware.

She resided in the Gables Assisted Living Home since 2004 and was a lifelong member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Denton.

She was predeceased by her brothers Charles T. (Doc) Baker and James L. Baker and a sister, Virginia Moore.

Funeral services will be at Moore Funeral Home, P.A., 12 South 2nd Street, Denton, MD on Saturday, July 17, 2010 at 1:00 pm with a visitation starting at noon.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Samaritan House, 12 North Fifth Ave., Denton, MD 21629 or to The Gables at Caroline, 701 Fifth Ave., Denton, MD 21629.

Kerslake, Walter G.

Walter G. Kerslake, Jr. of Denton, MD died Monday, May 17, 2010, at the Homestead Manor Assisted Living in Denton. He was 101 years old.

Born in Wilmington, DE on September 27, 1908, Mr. Kerslake was the son of the late Walter G. Kerslake, Sr. and Elsie G. Hartranft Kerslake. He was predeceased by his first wife, Myra Johnson Kerslake, his second wife, Josephine Ray Kerslake, two brothers: Harold and Luther Kerslake, and one sister, Mary Louise Kerslake Ferdinand.

Mr. Kerslake came to Denton in 1945 with the Farm Bureau Life Insurance Company. He joined Kemper Insurance in 1948, and, later, his brother-in-law, H. Samuel Johnson, joined him as a partner in the Kerslake Insurance Agency. He retired in 1973. He was a member of the Denton St. Luke's United Methodist Church, the Denton Lion's Club, the Temple Lodge AF&AM; #128, the Nur Shrine in Delaware, the Chesapeake Commandry, and was a former member of the Denton Planning Commission for 12 years. In addition, he drove School Bus #7 to Denton Primary, Denton Elementary and Junior High Schools, and Caroline and North Caroline High Schools for 24 years.

Mr. Kerslake is survived by one son, Richard J. Kerslake and his wife Margaret (Peg) Bell Kerslake of Easton, MD; three daughters: Mary Lou Green and her husband Eugene of Severn, MD, Margaret K. Cunningham and her husband Thomas J., Jr. of Missoula, MT, and Nancy K. Meyer of Fredericksburg, VA; 12 grandchildren: Douglas Kerslake, Jennifer Kerslake, Andrea Kerslake Troxell, Katherine Green, Karen Green Blackmon, Elaine Green, Eugene (Sonny) W. Green, III, Tammy Cunningham, Maj. Thomas J. Cunningham, III, USMC, Glen Moir, Melody Meyer Weathington, and Christopher M. Meyer; 17 great-grandchildren; his sister-in-law, Virginia Kerslake of Baltimore, MD; 4 nieces, and 3 nephews.

The funeral and Masonic services will begin at 4 PM Wednesday, May 19th, at the St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Denton. Friends may call from 3 until 4 before the service. The interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests for friends to send memorial donations to the Denton Lion's Club, PO Box 124, Denton, MD 21629 or to Homestead Manor, 410 Colonial Drive, Denton, MD 21629.
