August 14, 1999

Elaine Palmer Scharnus, age 74, died at her home in Stevensville on Aug. 14, 1999 after a long illness.

Born on Kent Island, MD on Aug. 25, 1924 the daughter of the late Carroll Palmer and Ethel Curlett Palmer McCoubrey. She graduated from Stevensville High School Class of 1940 and attended Strayers business school in Baltimore MD. On April 7, 1945 she married Ben Michael Scharnus of South Orange NJ. He predeceased her on March 19, 1982. Mrs. Scharnus raised her family on Kent Island and in Newport News VA. She worked in Bookkeeping, Insurance and as an office and property manager.In recent years she was the office manager for the Queen Anne's County United Way. She was a founding member of St. Christopher's Catholic Church in Chester Md.

She is survived by four sons: Robert Michael Scharnus, of Kent Island, Jerry John Scharnus of Salem VA, Joseph Palmer Scharnus of Kent Island, Michael Paul Scharnus of Forest VA, Two daughters: Cynthia Scharnus McCauley, of Kent Island MD, Mary Scharnus Draper of Centreville MD, and sixteen grandchildren. She was predeceased by two grandchildren: Lynn Ryan Scharnus and Michelle McCauley and one brother: John Palmer.

A Funeral Mass will be held in St. Christopher's Catholic Church in Chester MD on Monday Aug. 16, 1999 at 11am, interment in Stevensville Cemetery, Stevensville MD. The family requests in lieu of flowers please direct contributions to Hospice of Queen Anne's, Inc., 300 DelRhodes Ave, Queenstown MD 21658 or St. Christopher's Catholic Church, P.O. Box 660, Chester MD 21619.

August 10, 1999

Louise Ann Bowersox Olds of Chester died Tuesday, August 10, 1999 at Johns Hopkins Hospital. She was 47.

Born on February 20, 1952 the daughter of Franklin Donald and Elizabeth Ethel Bokel Bowersox Sr. She graduated from Severna Park High School and later received an associate degree from Chesapeake College in Wye Mills, MD. Mrs. Olds resided on the Eastern Shore. She married Robert Ernest Olds of Belair on December 28, 1996. She moved to Belair and later returned to Chester. Mrs. Olds was an executive administrative assistant to the vice-president of Chesapeake College until retiring in 1996. Following her retirement, she was a homemaker and worked with the Kent & Queen Anne Hospital Fundraising Foundation until her death.

Mrs. Olds was an exceptional humanitarian and was active in numerous organizations. Her efforts included personal fundraising for Multiple Sclerosis and Spina Bifida. Included in her volunteerism was distributing food and meals on holidays through Our Daily Bread and participating in Kent Island Little League for 10 years.

Prior to moving to Belair, she was a member of St. Christopher's Church in Chester for 20 years and choir director for 6 years. She then joined Christ Church in Harford County. Upon her return to the Eastern Shore, she became a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Stevensville and St. Peter's Catholic Church in Queenstown. She had an extensive musical ministry for area churches.

Mrs. Olds was also active in both the Church Hill Theater and Chesapeake College Theater. She also provided administrative support for the Performing Arts Center. Mrs. Olds also participated in various theater groups in Harford County.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Olds is survived by one son, Charles Campbell Jr. of Fort Polk, LA; one daughter, Christina Nicole Krasic of Ordway, CO; one step-daughter, Christine May Bosley of Chester, MD; two brothers: Franklin Bowersox Jr. of Calvert County and James Bowersox of Gambrills, MD; two sisters: Donna Shiflet of Centreville, MD and Susan Orhman of Seattle, WA; and one grandchild.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 14, 1999 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. in Centreville. A Vigil for the Deceased will follow at 4 p.m. Interment will be private. Memorial contribution may be made to the Brain and Tissue Bank, University of Maryland, Baltimore of Pediatrics, 10-035 BRB, 655 W. Baltimore St., MD 21201-1559.

August 9, 1999

Mary Rebecca "Reba" Collier of Stevensville died Monday, August 9, 1999 at her home. She was 77.

Born on February 10, 1922 the daughter to the late Charles Holton and Grace Grimes Clark. She attended school in Stevensville, Md. She married Charles L. Collier on December 31, 1945; he predeceased her in 1991. Mrs. Collier was a homemaker and raised her family in Stevensville. Mrs. Collier was a lifetime member of the Kent Island Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary, as well as a member of the Kent Island United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Collier is survived by three sons: Charles "Brother" Collier and Thomas Harmon Collier, both of Stevensville, and Steven Lee Collier of Grasonville; one daughter, Kathryn "Kitty" Duncan of Stevensville; two sisters: C. Madeleine Lowery and Jackie Moore, both of Stevensville; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Predeceasing Mrs. Collier are four brothers: Thomas Holton Clark, William Oliver "Buck" Clark, William Barton Clark and Charles "Teeny" Clark; and four sisters: Hazel Virginia Collier, Elise Elizabeth Smith, Grace Alma Clark and Mildred "Bunky" Boone.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 12 at 2 p.m. at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. in Chester. Burial will be at Stevensville Cemetery in Stevensville. Family and friends may call on Wednesday at the funeral home from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Queen Anne's Inc., 300 Del Rhodes Ave., Queenstown, MD 21658 or the Kent Island Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 27, Stevensville, MD 21666.

September 29, 1999

Albert Leslie Clark died on September 29,1999, at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis,Md. He was 82 years old.

Born on June 13,1917 in Burnside,Conn., he was the son of the late Henry H. Clark and Milly Pitkin.

Mr. Clarrk attended Atlantic City High School in Atlantic City, New Jersey. He married Miriam Agnes Mooney on November 23, 1942. Mr. Clark enlisted in the U.S. Army on Febuary 24,1942, he was a member of the 10th Armored Division in Central Europe during WWII. After the war he worked as a meat cutter for Lothrops Market in Washington D.C. and for Giant Food that in which he retired from in 1979.

Mr. Clark is survived by his wife Miriam Agnes Mooney Clark of Stevensville, Md.;4 sons Albert L. Clark Jr. of Columbia,Md.,Robert H. Clark of Waldorf,Md.,Richard B. Clark of Limerick,Maine, William P. Clark of Hartly,De.;3 daughters Mary E. Lott of Severna Park, Md., Elizabeth A. Miskell of Cattonsville,Md., Theresa C. Shepard of Chesapeake,Md., a brother Seymour H. Clark of Georgia. 9 grandchildren and 2 greatgrandchildren. He was predeceased by his son Raymond Clark.

Funeral liturgy will be held on Monday October 4,1999 at St. Christophers Catholic Church in Chester,Md. at 10:00 am. Burial will follow the service at Marland Vetrans Cemetery in Crownsville,Md. Family and friends may call at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. in Chester,Md. on Sunday October 3,1999 from 6:00-8:00pm where there be a vigil for the deceased at 7:30pm.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Queen Anne’s County Hospice 300 DelRhodes Ave. Queenstown Md. 21658 and Mass cards are appreciated.

Funeral arrangements were made by Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. Chester,Md.

Sandra "Sandy" H. Laird of Chester died at her home on Wednesday, September 29, 1999. She was 53.

Born August 18, 1946 in Easton, she was the daughter of Verna Lee Shaffer Horney Wood of Easton and the late Paul Vernon Horney. After graduating from Easton High School in 1964 she worked as a secretary in Talbot County and Queen Anne County area until 1990. At the time of her death she was associated with Kentmorr Restaurant in Stevensville.

She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion Post #278 in Kent Island and the Ladies Auxiliary V.F.W. Post #7464 in Grasonville.

In addition to her mother, Ms Laird is survived by a daughter, Melissa Ewing of Easton; two sisters, Paula H. Karr of Easton and Janet H. Lyons of Trappe; two granddaughters; two nieces and two nephews.

Funeral services will be held at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton, MD on Saturday, October 2, 1999 at 1:00 PM.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday evening from 6:00-8:00 PM.

Burial will be at Woodlawn Memorial Park, Easton.

Memorial donations may be made to the Hospice of Queen Anne, Inc., 300 Del Rhodes Avenue, Queenstown, MD 21658 or the First Baptist Church of Easton, Hanson and Idlewild Sts., Easton, MD 21601.

Janet Currie Geyer of Chatham Township, New Jersey passed away on Wednesday, September 29, 1999 at the Memorial Hospital, Easton, MD. She was 84.

Born April 23, 1915 in Kearny, New Jersey, she was the daughter of the late George and Jean Dunn Currie. After spending her early years in Scotland, she returned to New Jersey and worked at the Fireman's Fund Co. and AAA in Florsham Park, NY.

Fred P. Geyer, her beloved husband of 62 years, pre-deceased her in June 1998.

She was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Chatham.

Mrs. Geyer is survived by a son, Paul G. Geyer of Bedminster, New Jersey and a daughter Gail G. Lewis of Easton, MD; three grandchildren, Jill Lambert, Steven Lewis and Jason Geyer and one great granddaughter, Hannah Lewis and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at the Bradley Funeral Home, on Main Street in Chatham, New Jersey on Saturday, October 2, 1999 at 11:00 AM. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday evening, October 1, 1999 from 7:00 - 9:00 PM and one hour prior to the service.

Memorial donations may be made to the Presbyterian Church of Chatham, 240 Southern Blvd., Chatham, New Jersey, 07928.

September 27, 1999

A Funeral Liturgy for Catherine S. Hickson , of Cordova, will be celebrated at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Easton, on Thursday, Sept. 30th, at 2 p.m.

Mrs. Hickson died at the Talbot Hospice House, Easton, on Monday, Sept. 27, 1999. She was 69.

Born in Talbot County, July 4, 1930, she was the daughter of the late C. Elliott and Beatrice Councell Sharp. After graduating form Easton High School in 1947, she, in 1949, married William C. Hickson. They celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary on May 7th of this year. A lifelong resident of Talbot County, she was a member of Sts Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Easton. Prior to retiring in 1990, she had worked for thirteen years for the Talbot County Clerk of Circuit Court office and before that for ten years in the bookkeeping dept. of Maryland National Bank.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are three daughters, Sue Hutchison of Easton, Patti Keller and Kay Spence, both of Cordova; three sisters, Evelyn Lynch of Wilmington, Del., Cecilia Stanley of Dover, Del. and Florence Truitt of Cordova; a brother, C. Elliott Sharp, Jr. of Easton; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Burial will be at Woodlawn Memorial Park, Easton.

Friends may call on Wednesday, Sept. 29th, from 7 - 9 P.M. at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, Easton where a Vigil for the Deceased will be held at 8 P.M.

September 26, 1999

A Mass for the Dead for Joan E. Slaughter, of Easton, will be celebrated at Sts Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Easton, on Saturday, October 2nd, at 11 A.M.

Mrs. Slaughter died at her home in Easton on Sunday, September 26, 1999. She was 75.

Born in Cumberland, Md., May 11, 1924, she was the daughter of the late John E. and Anna Collins Welsh. She graduated from Fort Hill High School in Cumberland in 1943. In 1952, she married James Mason Slaughter and they made their home in Washington, D.C. for two years before moving to Easton in 1954. She retired in the mid-1980's from the C. & P. Telephone Co. with thirty years of service as a telephone operator.

Her memberships included Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Easton; Ladies of the Elks, Easton Lodge #1622; Telephone Pioneers of America and the Talbot County Women's Club of which she was a Past President. She also served as a Brownie Leader in the 1960's.

Mr. Slaughter died in March of 1998.

Mrs. Slaughter is survived by a daughter, Robbin Anne Bramble of Bethlehem; a son, James Mason Slaughter, Jr. of Bethlehem; three sisters, Eleanor W. Farrell, Anna Margaret Stevens and Mary Catherine Skidmore, all of Cumberland and one granddaughter.

Private burial will be at Oxford Cemetery, Oxford, Md.

In lieu of flowers, the family have requested memorial donations to the Talbot Hospice Foundation, 586 Cynwood Drive, Easton, Md. 21601.

Jesse Murle Driver Sr. of Henderson, Maryland died Sunday at the Kent and Queen Annes Hospital in Chestertown. He was 67.

Mr. Driver was born in Madisonville, Texas, the son of the late Jesse and Bertha Driver. Mr. Driver was a truck driver for Schiff Farms, in Harrington Delaware, where he retired at age 62. He loved to fish and work on cars and boats. Mr. Driver was preceded in death by his wife, Mary L. Driver in 1991.

Mr. Driver is survived by two sons, Jesse M. Driver, Jr., Huntsville, Texas, and Steven W. Driver, Chestertown, Maryland; Two daughters, Barbara Pratt, Bridgeville, Delaware, and Donna Walls, Barclay, Maryland; one brother, Kenneth E. Driver, Willis, Texas and Jeanice Sims, Cedar Hill, Texas.

Funeral Services will be held on Friday, October 1,1999 at 11:00 a.m. from the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, 370 W. Cypress Street, Millington, Maryland where friends may call on Thursday evening from 7-9 p.m. Interment will be in the Cherry Hill Cemetery, Cherry Hill, Maryland. All flowers accepted.
