Clyde V. Spies
TOMAHAWK, W.Va. - Clyde V. Spies, 79, of Route 2, died Monday, Oct. 13, 1997, in City Hospital, Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born Feb. 14, 1918, in Gettysburg, Pa., he was the son of the late Salem and Bessie Kime Spies.
He was a 1935 graduate of Eichleberger High School, Hanover, Pa.
He retired in 1978 from Chessie System Railroad with 38 years of service as a fireman and later an engineer.
He was a member of Tomahawk Christian Church, where he sang in the choir.
He was a member of Hedgesville Lions Club; Berkeley Lodge 37 AF&AM, Hedgesville, W.Va.; Tomahawk Ruritan Club; Eastern Panhandle Soil Conservation; Old Tymers Railroad Club, Hagerstown and an honorary member of FFA, Hedgesville chapter. He was a former member of Retired Men's Chorus. He was a past Boy Scout leader. He was a member of the Silver Haired Legislature for two terms.
He played semi-professional baseball as a pitcher. He was active and coached Little League Baseball in Hedgesville.
In 1993, he received a citation from Gov. Caperton for being instrumental in having the Back Creek Bridge replaced.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Evelyn Mae Herman Spies; three daughters, Barbara Jane Spies Scott and Cynthia Mae Spies Clarke, both of Hedgesville, and Deborah Elaine Spies Shickle of Winchester, Va.; five sons, Donald Edward Spies, Wayne Clyde Spies, David Bradley Spies and Daniel Thomas Spies, all of Hedgesville, and Glenn Allen Spies of Martinsburg; three brothers, Roy Spies of Hanover, Harvey Spies of Baltimore and Floyd Spies of Williamsport; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandson; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one son, Stanley S. Spies; and one brother, Glenn Spies.
Services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Tomahawk Christian Church, Tomahawk. The Rev. Jerry Holdman will officiate. Burial will be in Tomahawk Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg, today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Doris G.M. Russell
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Doris Grace Maxine Russell, 66, of 298 Falling Spring Road, died Monday, Oct. 13, 1997, at her home.
Born Feb. 28, 1931, in Knoxville, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Carl and Mabel Boothe Van Wey.
She was a 1949 graduate of Jefferson Union High School, Knoxville.
She was a homemaker.
She was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Chambersburg.
She was a member of Ladies Auxillary of Charles M. Nitterhouse, Post 1599, VFW, and Ladies Auxillary of Bert J. Asper, Post 46 American Legion, both of Chambersburg.
She is survived by her husband, Ronald W. Russell; four daughters, Brenda Jackson of Grand Junction, Colo., Ruth Helman and Martha Russell, both of Chambersburg, and Mary Saulnier of Fort Levenworth, Kan.; four sons, Adam Russell of Buckley, Wash., John Russell, Benjamin Russell, and Ronald Russell II, all of Chambersburg; one brother, Carl Van Wey of Tempe, Ariz.; 20 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Helen Van Wey, and one brother, Robert Van Wey.
Graveside services will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Corpus Christie Cemetery, Chambersburg. The Rev. Daniel F. Lawler will officiate.
There will be no public viewing.
A Memorial Mass will be announced.

Francis K. Motz
Francis K. Motz, 75, of 11 W. Baltimore St., Potomac Towers, Hagerstown, died Tuesday, Oct. 14, 1997, at his home.
Born Nov. 10, 1921, in Waynesboro, Pa., he was the son of the late Daniel C. and Eliza Bell Ritter Motz. He lived in the Waynesboro area until 1965.
He was a 1939 graduate of Waynesboro High School. He was a graduate of Hagerstown Junior College and received an associates degree in business/accounting.
In his early life, he was employed as a construction worker. Prior to retirement in 1983, he was an inspector for Mack Trucks, Hagerstown. He was also a part-time auctioneer.
He was a veteran of World War II and served with the U.S. Army.
He was a former member of First Christian Church of Waynesboro.
He was a member of Friendship Lodge 84 F&AM, Hagerstown; Consistory of Harrisburg, Pa.; Waynesboro Shrine Club; Zembro Shrine, Harrisburg; member of BPO Elks Lodge 378; W.D. Byron VFW Post 936 and AMVETS Post 10, all of Hagerstown; member of Eagles Club Inc. and Joe Stickell American Legion Post 15, both of Waynesboro.
He is survived by four daughters, Yvonne D. Emrick of Annapolis, Elaine E. Davis, Teresa K. Reese and Frances M. Luhn, all of Hagerstown; one son, Nathaniel K. Motz of York, Pa.; one sister, Dorothy Marker of Waynesboro; two brothers, Myers Motz of Waynesboro and Sylvanus Motz of Arkansas; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by twin sons, Daniel K. Motz and Charles Motz; and three brothers, Marion Motz, Marvin Motz and Gilson Motz.
Services will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. Nathaniel K. Motz will officiate.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m., where a Masonic service will be at 8:30 p.m.

Edna E. Rowland
SMITHSBURG - Edna E. Rowland, 83, formerly of 2 Blue Mountain Estates, died Tuesday Oct. 14, 1997, at Colton Villa Nursing Home, Hagerstown.
Born Oct. 19, 1913, in Pearl, Md., she was the daughter of the late Charles S. and Elizabeth L. Rutherford Painter.
She had owned and operated Edna E. Rowland Agency. During the 1960s, she was one of the first women realtors in Washington County.
She is survived by one son, Clinton O. Rowland III of Hagerstown; one sister, Mardella J. DeSantis of Hagerstown; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

Charles E. Sanders
EMMITSBURG, Md. - Charles Edward Sanders, 55, of Annandale Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 1997, at Gettysburg Hospital, Gettysburg, Pa.
Born Jan. 8, 1942, in Gettsburg, Pa., he was the son of Julian M. and Ruth E. Harbaugh Sanders of Emmitsburg.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Patty Ann Belcher Sanders.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Emmitsburg.
He was a member of Moose Lodge 1381, Westminster; Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie Lodge 1562, Gettysburg; Charles J. Gilliand Amvets, Post 172, Fairfield, Pa.; VFW Post 6658, Emmitsburg; and VFW Post 8806 Union Bridge, Md.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by one daughter, Michelle Lynn Sanders of Hagerstown; two sons, Edward Charles Sanders and Billy Ray Sanders, both of Fairfield; one sister, Judy Stambaugh of Thurmont, Md.; four grandchildren; aunts, uncles and cousins; and his companion, Charlotte Stitley of Keymar, Md.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Bertha and Emmitt Harbaugh; paternal grandparents, Lottie and Jason Sanders; and one granddaughter, Patty Ann Sanders.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Oct. 20, with the family meeting at Skiles Funeral Home, Emmitsburg at 10:30 a.m. to go to Trinity United Methodist Church, Emmitsburg for a Christian Burial Service at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Larry Eby officiating. Burial will be in Fairfield Union Cemetery, Fairfield.
Visitation will be Sunday from noon to 9 p.m. at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m.
Gilbert Nichols
Gilbert "Red" Nichols, 78, of 13725 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, died Tuesday, Oct. 14, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.
Born March 5, 1919, in Cohocton, N.Y., he was the son of the late William and Louella Ingalis Nichols.
He retired in 1985, as a truck driver from Ryder Truck Lines, after 20 years of employment.
He is survived by his wife, of almost 50 years, Bertha M. Nichols; one daughter, Mary Margaret Shutt of Hornell, N.Y.; two sons, William Edward Nichols of Hagerstown, and Gerald L. Nichols of Waterloo, N.Y.; six granddaughters; four grandsons; three great-granddaughters; six great-grandsons; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one sister and one brother.
Services will be Friday at 1 p.m. in the Chapel of Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Boulevard North, Hagerstown. The Rev. Victor Zuck will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service on Friday.
Layton L. Coy
Layton Leroy Coy, 70, of 15920 National Pike, Hagerstown, who died Monday, Oct. 13, 1997, is survived by a grandson, Allen Beard, at home.
Frances B.G. Johnson
SUITLAND, Md. - Frances Barbara Green Johnson, 57, of Suitland and formerly of Martinsburg, W.Va., died Monday, Oct. 13, at Walter Reed Medical Center, Washington, D.C.
She was the daughter of Mary Virginia Green of Waldorf, Md., and the late Francis G. Green.
She attended Shepherd College.
She retired in 1995 after 28 years of employment at St. Elizabeth's Hospital, Washington, D.C.
She was a member of the Galilee Baptist Church.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband of 39 years, George W. "Butch" Johnson; three daughters, Darlene Mayo and Danielle Johnson, both of Suitland, and Dawn Johnson of Upper Marlboro, Md.; two sons, Darrel "Skip" Johnson and Dion Johnson, both of Suitland; two sisters, Marian Wilcoxon and Beverly Johnson, both of Columbia, Md.; seven grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Marshall's Funeral Home of Maryland, Suitland. Burial will be in Harmony Memorial Park, Landover, Md.
Visitation will be at the funeral home one hour prior to the service Saturday.
Mary I. Daley
Mary I. Daley, 91, of Colton Villa Nursing Center, and formerly of 648 N. Prospect St., Hagerstown, died Tuesday, Oct. 14, 1997, at the nursing center.
Born Jan. 12, 1906, in Clear Spring, she was the daughter of the late William and Hattie Yost.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman Oscar Daley, in 1985.
She was a homemaker.
She is survived by one son, William E. Daley Sr. of Hagerstown; one granddaughter, Elizabeth Anne Hutzell of Hagerstown; one grandson, William E. Daley Jr. of Hagerstown; and one great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by two daughters, Ruth Shaw and Emma King; one sister, Ella Smith; and one brother, Raymond Yost.
Graveside services will be today at 10 a.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown. The Rev. Edward H. Heim will officiate.
There will be no viewing or visitation.
At her request, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, 141 S. Potomac St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Charles W. Topper
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Charles W. Topper, 87, of Martinsburg, died Tuesday, Oct. 14, 1997, at City Hospital, Martinsburg.
Born Oct. 5, 1910, in Thomas, W.Va., he was the son of the late Albert and Mary Stuart Topper.
He was a retired bowling alley manager. He also taught bowling.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Martinsburg.
He is survived by his wife, of 40 years, Marguerite Topper; one stepson, Elliott Ours of Shepherdstown, W.Va.; two brothers, Robert Topper of Parkersburg, W.Va. and Ted Topper of Roanoke, Va.; two grandchildren; one great-grandson; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by five sisters and two brothers.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Martinsburg. The Rev. John V. DiBacco will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery, Martinsburg.
There will be no visitation.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Joseph School, 336 S. Queen St., Martinsburg, W.Va. 25401.
