Kathryn S. Nalley

Kathryn Sarah Nalley, 89, of 805 View St., died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 1997, at Valley County Hospital, Santa Maria, Calif.

Born June 12, 1908, in Edgemont, Md., she was the daughter of the late Luther H. and Elizabeth M. Miner Yingling.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard E. Nalley, in 1985.

She was employed with View Street Diner for more than 30 years.

She was a 1927 graduate of Waynesboro High School.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

She was a member of Order of the Eastern Star, Queen Esther Chapter 3.

She is survived by one son, Joseph E. Nalley of Sharpsburg, Md.; one sister, Sylvia G. Lewis of Calver City, Calif.; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by sisters, Olive M. Stottlemyer, Delta E. Garrett and Naomi R. Myers.

Graveside services will be at the convenience of the family. The Rev. David M. Buchenroth will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.

The family requests the omission of flowers.

Memorial donations may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, 15 Randolph Ave., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Ernest H. Weddle

FREDERICK, Md. - Ernest Hedges Weddle, 89, of Frederick, died Thursday, Oct. 30, 1997, at Northampton Manor Nursing Home.

Born April 14, 1908, in Frederick, he was the son of the late Charles William and Mary Elizabeth Weddle.

He owned and operated Northstar Luncheonette on West Seventh Street, Frederick. From 1957 to 1973, he was a cashier for the Maryland and Virginia Horse Racing.

He was a member of AARP.

He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Catherine Kissel Weddle; three daughters, Rosemary Wood and Martha Marie Long, both of Frederick, and Sue Keller of Greencastle, Pa.; one son, E. Allen Weddle of California; six grandchildren; one great-grandson; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Dale A. Weddle; one sister, Anna Smith; and three brothers, Robert Weddle, William Weddle and Douglas Weddle.

Services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, Etchison Memorial Chapel, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to American Diabetes Association, Maryland Office, 407 Central Ave., Reisterstown, Md. 21136; or American Heart Association, Frederick County Chapter, 1080 W. Patrick St., 11-150, Frederick, Md. 21703.

Mary L.H. Thomas

Mary Loueda Horst Thomas, 62, a resident of Mennonite Fellowship Home, 12349 Huyett Lane, Hagerstown, and formerly of Chambersburg, Pa., died Thursday, Oct. 30, 1997, at the home.

Born July 6, 1935, in South Hampton Township, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Peter and Elizabeth Byers Horst.

In her earlier years, she worked at the former H.J. Heinz Co., Chambersburg. She also had worked at OSI, Chambersburg.

She was a member of Emmanuel Fellowship Church, Edenville, Pa.

She is survived by her husband, Leroy Thomas of Shippensburg, Pa.; three sisters, Thelma Horst Baer of Dunster, British Columbia, Canada, Elsie Mae Myers and Marian Heckman, both of Mercersburg, Pa.; nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Aden Horst.

Services will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Rowe Mennonite Church, Pinola Road, near Shippensburg. Bishop Thomas Rock, Minister Seth Miller and Minister Keith Sensenig will officiate. Burial will be in Old Rowe Mennonite Church Cemetery, Pinola.

The family will receive friends at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle, Pa., Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. and at the church Monday one hour prior to the service.

The family requests the omission of flowers.

Kathryn S. Nalley

Kathryn Sarah Nalley, 89, of 805 View St., who died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 1997, at Valley Community Hospital, Santa Maria, Calif., is also survived by one sister, Sylvia G. Lewis of Culver City, Calif. She was also preceded in death by one brother, Luther H. Yingling.

Mary L. Bard

Mary Louise Patterfield Bard, who died Monday, Sept. 15, 1997, was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. James T. Bard, in 1986.

A graveside burial was held Saturday, Nov. 1, at 11 a.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery. The family service was officiated by the Rev. J. Douglas Patterson of Pittsburgh, Pa.

Bessie J. Mills

Bessie Jane Mills, 76, of 614 Sunset Ave., Hagerstown, died Saturday, Nov. 1, 1997, at Fahrney-Keedy Home in Boonsboro.

Born Nov. 17, 1920, near Boonsboro, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Bertha Reid Saunders.

She was a homemaker.

She was a life member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church near Boonsboro, where she was a member of the Altar Guild and Episcopal Church Women.

She was a member of Lappans Homemakers Club, Lappans Garden Club, past board member of Washington County Ag Expo, and a former representative for University of Maryland Extension Office in Washington County.

She is survived by her husband, William A. Mills, whom she married May 30, 1940; two daughters, Melanie L. Kaetzel of Clear Spring and Jane Schlotterbeck of Middletown; two sons, Richard A. Mills of Hagerstown and William W. Mills of Chambersburg; one brother, Francis Saunders of Sharpsburg; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Elmina Jones; and two brothers, Elmer Saunders and Richard Saunders.

Services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 18313 Lappans Road, Boonsboro. The Rev. Anne O. Weatherholt will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mark's Cemetery.

There will be no viewing; however the family will receive friends at Bast Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro, Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Mark's Episcopal Church Memorial Fund, 18313 Lappans Road, Boonsboro, Md. 21713; or to the Alzheimer's Association of Western Maryland, 5 Public Square, Suite 307, Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Gerald L. Smith

Gerald Leon "Smitty" Smith, 73, of 16902 Lakeview Court, Hagerstown, died Saturday, Nov. 1, 1997, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born May 12, 1924, near Myersville, Md., he was the son of the late Meade and Annie Dusing Smith.

He was formerly employed by Shifler Electric and Ellsworth Electric, both in Hagerstown.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army.

He was of the Brethren faith.

He is survived by his wife, Lelia M. Flook Smith, whom he married July 29, 1950; one daughter, Kathy Jones of Boonsboro; three sons, Gary Smith of Inwood, W.Va., Wayne Smith and Rick Smith, both of Hagerstown; one sister, Jean Stottler of Hagerstown; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a number of sisters and brothers, and one grandson.

Private services will be at Bast Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro. The Rev. Loyal H. Vanderveer will officiate. Burial will be in Beaver Creek Cemetery.

There will be no viewing; however, friends may call at the funeral home at anytime today.

The family requests the omission of flowers. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Luther W. Reed

Luther W. Reed, 92, of 1048 Columbia Road, died Thursday, Oct. 30, 1997, at Clearview Nursing Home, Hagerstown.

Born in Greensburg, Pa., he was the son of the late John W. and Clara E. Kunkle Reed.

He was a retired machinist with Fairchild Aircraft.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret B. Parks Reed; one daughter, Marjorie B. Wentz of Maugansville; three sons, Wayne E. Reed and Marvin P. Reed, both of Hagerstown and Wallace E. Reed of Knoxville, Tenn.; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Leona R. Blonsay.

Services will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown. Vicar Marty Roberson will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.

Visitation will be 30 minutes prior to the service at the funeral home.

Jeffrey S. Harger

THURMONT, Md. - Jeffrey Scott Harger, 47, of Thurmont, died Sunday, Nov. 2, 1997, at Washington Hospital Center, Washington, D.C.

Born June 23, 1950, in Newburgh, Ind., he was the son of Wilbur Augustus and Marion Hall Harger.

He was employed as an information manager.

He retired from the U.S. Air Force with the rank of master sergeant.

He is survived by his wife of five years, Aimee Lynn Friedberg Harger; one daughter, Diedra Vanessa Harger of Hagerstown; three sons, Joseph D. Harger and Jeffrey S. Harger Jr., both of Indiana, and Zachary Harger of Wisconsin; one stepdaughter, Kathrine M. Huegel of Thurmont; six sisters; one brother; and one granddaughter.

Services will be Wednesday, Nov. 12, at 3 p.m. at Fort Myers Chapel, Arlington National Cemetery. The Rev. Darryl S. McGraw will officiate.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, Nov. 11, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Stauffer Funeral Home, 104 E. Main St., Thurmont.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to TRIO/Transplant Recipients International Organization, Nations Capital Area Chapter, P.O. Box 7633 Arlington, Va. 22207.
