William M. Allenberg

SMITHSBURG - William M. Allenberg, 75, of Barth Spring Lane, died Friday, Dec. 5, 1997, at Ravenwood Lutheran Village, Hagerstown.

Born Oct. 19, 1922, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late William and Irene Russman Allenberg.

He was a 1940 graduate of Hagerstown High School; and a 1950 graduate of the University of Maryland, with a bachelor of science degree in agricultural education.

He served as agricultural extension agent in Carroll County for five years; and worked as a teacher at Boonsboro High School Agricultural Department for 21 years, retiring in 1977.

He was owner and operator of Mountain Spring Orchard in Smithsburg, retiring in 1989.

A U.S. Army veteran, he served during World War II and the Korean War.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Smithsburg.

He served on the Maryland Agricultural Committee; Maryland Apple Committee; and Maryland Horticulture Society. He was past president of Washington County Farm Bureau; and past president of Smithsburg Lion Club.

He is survived by his wife, Ann Thomas Allenberg; two sons, Henry Allenberg and Fred Allenberg, both of Smithsburg; and one sister, Virginia E. Fehl of Smithsburg.

He was preceded in death by a sister, H. June Fuller.

Memorial services will be Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 16 N. Main St., Smithsburg. Pastor Mark Walters will officiate. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

The family requests the omission of flowers.

Memorial donations may be made to Smithsburg Emergency Medical Service, P.O. Box 411, Smithsburg, Md. 21783; or Trinity Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 217, Smithsburg, Md. 21783.

Arrangements are by Davis Funeral Home, 12525 Bradbury Ave., Smithsburg.

Thelma M. Rice

Thelma Marie Rice, 82, of West Franklin Street, Hagerstown, died Thursday, Dec. 4, 1997, at Williamsport Nursing Home.

Born July 11, 1915, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late William Daniel and Fannie R. Lamp Rice.

She was employed by the former Old Southern Shoe Factory and Buffalo Restaurant, both in Hagerstown.

She is survived by one daughter, Lorraine Smith of Funkstown; one son, Frank L. Stockslager of Funkstown; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one great-grandchild.

Private services and burial will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery in Hagerstown at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are by Davis Funeral Home in Smithsburg.

Ida R. Leatherman

WOLFSVILLE, Md. - Ida Rae Leatherman, 100, of 12630 Brandenburg Hollow Road, died Friday, Dec. 5, 1997, at her home.

Born June 18, 1897, near Wolfsville in Frederick County, Md., she was the daughter of the late Irving Recher and Ida Mary Ellen Smith Morgan.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry J. Leatherman, in 1959.

Prior to her marriage, she was a teacher at Sensenbaugh and Continental Schools in Frederick County, Md. Following World War I, she was employed by the federal government in Washington, D.C., in the department of veterans insurance.

She was a life-long member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Wolfsville, where she taught Sunday school class; was church treasurer; and supported the church making crafts.

She is survived by her daughter, Naomi Rae Kuhn, with whom she resided; two granddaughters, Lois Elaine Kuhn of Wolfsville and Joyce Rae Erwin of Frederick; and two great-granddaughters, Emily Morgan Erwin and Jennifer Lane Erwin, both of Frederick, Md.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, J. Page Leatherman, Ruth E. Morgan and Mary A. Morgan; and four brothers, Leslie I. Morgan, Ralph E. Morgan, Clair N. Morgan and Vernon S. Morgan.

Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Wolfsville. Pastor David Howell will officiate. Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Davis Funeral Home, 12525 Bradbury Ave., Smithsburg.

The family requests the omission of flowers.

Marie M. Simons

BRUNSWICK, Md. - Marie Molly Simons, 82, of 1100 Peach Orchard Lane, died Friday, Dec. 5, 1997, at College View Center, Frederick, Md.

Born June 27, 1915, in Smithsburg, she was the daughter of the late Gordon and Lucy Alger McIntyre.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Albert E. Castle.

She is survived by five children, Mary Alice Eagle of Knoxville, John Castle of Boonsboro, Nancy L. Thomas of Frederick, Shirley Howard of Rome City, Ind., and Joyce Burkett of Frederick; one sister, Mamie Cornell of Rome, Pa.; one brother, Joseph McIntyre of Smithsburg; 23 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a friend, Hilda Remsburg.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Reno Simons, in 1982; and four children, Ernest Castle, Gene Castle, Betty Lou Castle and Doris Etta Mae Castle.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, 31 E. Main St., Middletown, Md. Burial will be in Reformed Cemetery, Jefferson, Md.

Friends may call Sunday from noon to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Donna G. Miller

GLEN BURNIE, Md. - Donna Gay Miller, 54, of 128 Bonnie View Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 1997, at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore.

Born Dec. 25, 1942, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Emil and Fern Mogenson Cox.

She was a 1960 graduate of South Hagerstown High School.

She was previously employed by Robert Hall, The Bon-Ton, Quality Court, Hutzlers, Hoschild-Kohn and for the past 15 years repaired antique toys for antique dealers.

She is survived by her husband, Jay Michael Miller; and one cousin.

Graveside services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Greenlawn Memorial Park, Williamsport.

Friends may call at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Humane Society of the United States, 2100 L Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20037.

Betty Baumgarten

SALISBURY, Md. - Betty Baumgarten, 69, a resident of Deer's Head Center, and formerly of Hagerstown, died Friday, Dec. 5, 1997, at Penninsula Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born Nov. 12, 1928, in Chambersburg, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Miriam Robison.

She is survived by one daughter, Linda Baumgarten of Hagerstown; one son, James Baumgarten of Stockton, Md.; and three grandchildren.

Services will be private and at a later date.

Arrangements are by Bounds Funeral Home, 705 E. Main St., Salisbury.

Margaret V. Bowers

Margaret Virginia Bowers, 77, of 11312 Manse Road, Hagerstown, died Sunday, Dec. 7, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Sept. 26, 1920, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late John Hamilton and Ruby Frances Frazer Barnhart.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest William Bowers, in 1970.

She was employed by Manpower. She retired from A&P after 27 years of service.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Hagerstown.

She was a member of United Food and Commercial Workers International Union.

She is survived by five daughters, Jean M. Joe of Hagerstown, Carol Howard of Gaithersburg, Md., Judith Shaffer of Wheaton, Md., Beverly Fogle of Boonsboro and Mary Ann Miller of Williamsport; one sister, May Mullenix of Hagerstown; 12 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by several sisters and brothers.

Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. Minister Bryan R. Bailey will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Hazel B. McCullough

ALBANY, N.Y. - Hazel Barnett McCullough, 86, of Albany, and formerly of Hagerstown, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 1997, in Albany.

Born May 26, 1911, in Williamsport, she was the daughter of the late Harriet Barnett.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fontaine McCullough, in September.

She was a graduate of North Street School, Hagerstown.

She retired from New York state government. She also worked at Watervliet Arsenal during World War II.

She was a member of Israel AME Church, Albany.

She was a member of Missionary Society and Senior Citizens Choir.

She is survived by one aunt, Alice Devonshire of Hagerstown; and three cousins, Harry Barnett and Madlyn Lockley, both of Hagerstown, and Florence Hightower of Virginia.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Mame Henderson; and one brother, Harry Barnett.

Services were Saturday, Dec. 6, at Israel AME Church, Albany. Graveside burial will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Greenlawn Memorial Park, Williamsport.

Memorial donations may be made to the Missionary Society, c/o Israel A.M.E., 381 Hamilton St., Albany, N.Y.

Local arrangements are by Watson Funeral Home, 24 W. Bethel St., Hagerstown.
