Charles D. Horn
FREDERICK, Md. - Charles David "Charlie" Horn, 64, of Frederick, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 1998, at his home.
Born April 19, 1933, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Ernest R. and Nannie Mae Sheise Horn.
He was a member of Evangelical Lutheran Church, Frederick. He had attended St. Lukes Lutheran Church, New Windsor, Md.
In 1957, he started Horn Electric Service Inc. in Frederick, retiring in 1995.
A veteran of the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a life member of Shangri-La Detachment of the Marine Corps League, held every office in the detachment, was Mid-East vice commandant, and worked on the national level as merchandise manager. He was named National Marine of the year in 1976 and was made an honorary past national commandant in 1995.
He was a life member of Bulldog Detachment MCL Hagerstown; Landis McCleaf Detachment MCL Chambersburg, Pa.; Ulster Detachment MCL Kingston, N.Y.; Carroll County Detachment MCL Westminster; White Water Valley Detachment Richland, Ind.; Francis Scott Key American Legion Post 11 Frederick; VFW; AMVETS Post 2, Frederick; and Last Korean War Veterans.
He was a life member of Frederick County Agricultural Society; Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 371, Frederick; and BPO Elks, Lodge 684. He had served on the Electrical Board of Frederick County.
He was a member of Columbia Lodge 58, AF&AM, Frederick; York Rites Bodies, Scottish rite, Tall Cedars, Hagerstown; Ali Ghan Shrine Club; Ketsyone Kops; and Grand Guardian Council of Maryland International Order of Job's Daughters. He was past associate Bethel Guardian Bethel 28; a Kentucky Colonel and an Admiral in the Cherry River Navy, Richwood, Va.
He supported Heritage Academy, where he received an honorary diploma in 1980; and ran sports boosters clubs.
He helped two children of the Shriner's Crippled Children Hospital, Philadelphia; and was active with the Marine Corps Toys for Tots.
He is survived by his wife of more than 40 years, Thelma Grace Kinna Horn; one son, Charles A. "Chip" Horn of Frederick; two daughters, Jo Ann Cashman of New Windsor and April Mae Horn of Frederick; two brothers, Thomas Horn of Falling Waters, W.Va., and Gene Horn of Baltimore; four sisters, Elaine Parker of Vera Beach, Fla., Anna Stup and Ethel Schmidt, both of Hagerstown and Betty College of Waynesboro, Pa.; four grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Poffenberger.
Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Evangelical Lutheran Church, 31 E. Church St., Frederick. The Rev. W. Philip Fogarty and the Rev. Darrell L. Layman will officiate. Burial will be in Frederick Memorial Park, Linden Hills.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick.
The Columbia Lodge will conduct a memorial service Saturday at 8:30 p.m., at the funeral home. The Marine Corps will conduct a service on Sunday.

Elzie L. Farrow
Elzie Lionel Farrow, 86, of 11332 Greenberry Road, Hagerstown, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1998, at his home.
Born Nov. 12, 1911, in Clear Spring, he was the son of the late John and Nan Shank Farrow.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dartha Farrow, in 1988.
He was employed with Charlton Brothers for 19 years, retiring in 1978. He previously was employed with Fairchild Aircraft for 12 years.
He was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ.
He was a past member of BPO Elks 378; AARP; and a bowler with the senior groups.
He is survived by his wife, Ida Lane Farrow; three daughters, Patricia Roller and Joann Moore, both of Delaware, and Jean Johnston of Ellicott City, Md.; one son, Jack Farrow of Pasadena, Md.; one sister, Marie P. Bergan of Funkstown; one brother, Harold Farrow of Hagerstown; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Nora Brunson and Reba Hawbaker; and two brothers, Carl Farrow and John Marvin Farrow.
Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Clear Spring. The Rev. Richard P. Yates will officiate. Burial will be in St. Paul's Cemetery in Clear Spring.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.
Vinnie G. Rodgers
Vinnie Gertrude Rodgers, 87, of 450 Stratford Ave., Hagerstown, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 1998, at her home.
Born Nov. 26, 1910, in Luray, Va., she was the daughter of the late Edgar Vernon and Gertie Mae Kendrick Ramey.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Truman Edward Rodgers, in 1982.
She was previously employed with Hagerstown Shoe Co.
She was a member of First Christian Church and the Sunday school class.
She attended Christian Women's Club.
She is survived by one brother, Theodore Ramey of Luray, Va.; and nieces and nephews.
Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Fred M. Harris will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Ethan A. Middlekauff
Graveside services for Ethan A. "Dene" Middlekauff, 82, of 20 Richmond St., Hagerstown, who died Friday, Jan. 2, 1998, will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery, 600 S. Potomac St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Raymond H. Shriver will officiate.
Clarence H. Clark Sr.
FUNKSTOWN - Clarence H. "Jim" Clark Sr., 69, of 10 W. Poplar St., who died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 1998, was preceded in death by a brother, Richard V. "Buck" Clark.
Mary A. Munson
TOWSON, Md. - Mary Alice Munson, 89, of Towson, and formerly of Hagerstown, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 1998, at the Presbyterian Home, Towson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard C. Munson.
She is survived by one brother, Lenwood King of Baltimore; and a close friend, Lisa Schwabb of Baltimore, with whom she lived; and nieces and nephews.
Services were held Wednesday at Mitchell-Wiedefeld Funeral Home, 6500 York Road, Baltimore. Burial was in Loudon Park Cemetery, Baltimore.
James W. Brode
ORLANDO, Fla. - James W. Brode, 74, of Zimmerman Drive, and formerly of Hagerstown, died Sunday, Dec. 14, 1997.
He was born in Frostburg, Md.
He moved to Central Florida in 1960.
He retired from Martin Marietta.
He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran.
He was a member of Calvary Assembly Church, Winter Park, Fla.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy C. Brode; one daughter, Bonnie Scarbrough of Albany, Ga.; and two grandchildren.
Arrangements were by Woodlawn Funeral Home and Memorial Park, Orlando.
Mason W. Gordon
HANCOCK - Mason William Gordon, 56, of Heavenly Acres Ridge, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1998, at Morgan County War Memorial Hospital, Berkeley Springs, W.Va.
Born Sept. 23, 1941, in Hancock, he was the son of the late Dean and Catherine Barnhart Gordon.
He was a jockey, riding at Charles Town Races, from 1956 until his retirement in 1987. He also was a truck driver and involved in the walnut lumber business.
He was a member of Jockeys Guild Inc.; and fraternal organizations.
He is survived by his wife, of 24 years, L. Carmon Maconaughey Gordon of Hancock; one daughter, April Hinckle of Hancock; and two grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St., Hancock. The Rev. Delmas Bard will officiate.
At his request, there will be no viewing.
The family requests the omission of flowers.

Dylan R. Weller
FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. - Dylan Rebecca Weller, 39, of Farmington Hills, died Monday, Jan. 5, 1998, at Columbia Regional Medical Center Oak Hill, Brooksville, Fla.
Born Oct. 12, 1958, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of Roxana L. Gabe Weller of Spring Hill, Fla., and Farmington Hills, Mich., and the late Kermit Stephen Weller.
She was a member of Rosedale Gardens Presbyterian Church, Livonia, Mich.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by one sister, Anna Weller of Ann Arbor, Mich.; one brother, Derek S. Weller of Ann Arbor; and aunts, uncles and cousins of Hagerstown.
Graveside services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Rest Haven Cemetery. The Rev. Robert S. Barton will officiate.

Rena L. Sperry
FUNKSTOWN - Rena Lee Sperry, 56, of 36 W. Baltimore St., died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Sept. 3, 1941, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of Ida Irene Saum Irby of Williamsport and the late Paul Vincent Irby.
She was the owner and operator of Funkstown Tavern; and previously had been employed at Colonial Grill and Pleasant View Inn.
She was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church.
She was a member of American Legion, Funkstown Post 211 Auxiliary.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, C. Victor Sperry; two stepdaughters, Patricia Comianos of Marion, Ohio, and Valerie Barbeito of Myersville, Md.; two stepsons, Steven Sperry of Abingdon, Va., and Mark Sperry of Webster, N.Y.; one brother, Jack Irby of Hagerstown; 12 stepgrandchildren; and aunts and uncles.
Services will be Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd. The Rev. Stephen D. Robison will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends today from 8 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
