W. Preston Corderman
FORT BELVOIR, Va. - Ret. Maj. Gen. W. Preston Corderman, 93, of The Fairfax, died Wednesday, March 4, 1998, at Fairfax Retirement Community, Fort Belvoir.
Born in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Albert C. and Alice Hause Corderman.
He was a 1922 graduate of Hagerstown High School. He was a 1926 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. He received a master's degree in electrical engineering in 1927 from Yale University.
He served in the U.S. Army for 32 years, retiring in 1958 as commanding general of Fort Monmouth, N.J. During World War II, he was the commanding general of the Army Security Agency in Arlington, Va. While on that assignment, the agency deciphered the Japanese code, which led to a substantial shortening of the war. He developed and was responsible for implementing a plan for managing postal censorship for the United States.
He had tours of duty at the Pentagon, in Germany, the Philippines and throughout the United States.
After retiring from the Army, he was employed by Litton Industries, and was vice president of its Washington office. He also was national president of the Retired Officer's Association.
He was a founding member of the board of directors of Brookdale Community College in Lincroft, N.J., and was its first chairman.
He was an elder of First Presbyterian Church in Red Bank, N.J.
He was a member of the Masons.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Virginia S. Corderman; one daughter, Ginger Lash of Pinehurst, N.C.; two sons, Douglas G. Corderman of St. Louis and David M. Corderman of Hayworth, N.J.; 15 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Burial will be in West Point.
Robert W. Sprankle
WILLIAMSPORT - Robert Winton "Bob" Sprankle, 73, of 16612 Coney Court, died Sunday, March 8, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.
Born in Hagerstown on Feb. 18, 1925, he was the son of the late Harry William and Anna Mary Pike Sprankle.
He retired from Tasty Baking Co. in Philadelphia in 1988.
He previously was employed by Wonder Bread in Hagerstown, and was a manager at Creasy Cash and Carry in Hagerstown.
After retirement, he was employed by Food Lion Supermarket on Virginia Avenue.
He was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church, Hagerstown.
He was a member of Hagerstown Lodge 378, BPO Elks; Aerie 694 Fraternal Order of Eagles in Hagerstown, Eagles Inc. in Waynesboro, Pa.; Martinsburg Lodge 120 Loyal Order of Moose; and Conococheague Tribe 84 Improved Order of Red Men.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Jane Baker Sprankle; one son, Gary E. Sprankle of Hagerstown; five granddaughters; five great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one son, Robert L. "Bobby" Sprankle; and one sister, Helen C. Grant.
Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Concordia Lutheran Church. The Rev. Stephen Updegrave and the Rev. Wayne Swanke will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport. The funeral home will be open after 9 a.m. today for the convenience of family and friends.

R. Beverly Popo
R. Beverly Popo, 71, of Selema Drive, Hagerstown, died Sunday, March 8, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.
Born May 27, 1926, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Richard Forest and Ruth Irene House Hook.
She was a member of Ladies Auxiliary of American Legion Morris Frock Post 42, and Women of the Moose.
She is survived by one son, John J. Peterson II of Salisbury, Md.; one sister, Virginia L. Marker of Ruskin, Fla.; and two grandchildren, Mathew Peterson and Ryan Peterson.
Services and burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery in Hagerstown at the convenience of the family.

PORTAGE, Ind. - Guy H. Brechbill Sr., 80, of Portage, died Thursday, March 5, 1998.

Memorial services for R. Natalie Johnston, 55, of 13810 Broadfording Church Road, Hagerstown, who died Thursday, March 5, 1998, will be held Sunday at 7 p.m. at John Wesley United Methodist Church, 129 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Richard W. Simpson will officiate.

SMITHSBURG - Anna M. Wasson, 89, of North Main Street, who died Monday, March 9, 1998, also was preceded in death by a sister, Hattie Blickenstaff; and a brother, Lester Eckstine.
William L. Crum
SMITHSBURG - William L. Crum, 90, of Cave Hill Road, died Tuesday, March 10, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.
Born March 18, 1907, near Waynesboro, Pa., he was the son of the late William Richard and Mary Susan Leisinger Crum.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Catherine Brown Crum, in 1985.
He attended auto mechanic school in Kansas City, Mo.
He was employed with Newman Auto Co., Smithsburg; and Massey Ford, Hagerstown, retiring in 1971.
He was a life member of Christ United Church of Christ, Cavetown, where he was a Sunday school teacher and an elder emeritus.
He was a member of Sunshine Leisure Club; Smithsburg Historical Society, Chewsville Senior Citizens Club; and AARP.
He is survived by four daughters, Mary Catherine Cline, Ruth E. Rubeck and Patsy A. Keller, all of Hagerstown, and Betty L. Johnson of Smithsburg; one sister, Mary S. Landers of Waverly, Ohio; one brother, Richard Crum of Waynesboro; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; 15 stepgreat-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, William L. Crum Jr., in 1992; and a sister, Anna Ifert.
Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Davis Funeral Home, 12525 Bradbury Ave., Smithsburg. The Rev. Ron E. Kauffman will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

H. Louise D. Grier
BOONSBORO - H. Louise D. Grier, 86, a resident of Fahrney-Keedy Memorial Home and formerly of Hagerstown, died Tuesday, March 10, 1998, at the nursing home.
Born Dec. 15, 1911, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Victor Elwood and Lida Harriet Dellinger Linder.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Horace Grier, in 1985.
She was a member of Fahrney-Keedy Home Chapel.
She is survived by one daughter, Barbara E. Duffey of Hagerstown; one son, Jack B. Grier of Hagerstown; one sister, Sue E. Gruber of Hagerstown; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at Fahrney-Keedy Memorial Home Chapel. The Rev. Louis L. Emerick will officiate. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
There will be no viewing or visitation.

William A. Spade
William Alex Spade, 80, of Spade Road, Hagerstown, died Monday, March 9, 1998, at Williamsport Nursing Home, Williamsport.
Born March 3, 1918, in Needmore, Pa., he was the son of the late Alexander Kamil and Curcha I. Truax Spade.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn V. Diehl Spade, in 1992.
He was employed with Fairchild Aircraft for 43 years, retiring in 1981.
He was a member of Broadfording Church of God.
He is survived by his two daughters, Shelbie J. Keplinger of Falling Waters, W.Va., and Patricia A. Haney of Long Beach, N.C.; one son, Rodney E. Spade of Leonardtown, Md.; one sister, Mildred Osborne of State Line, Pa.; two half sisters, Margie Bloyer of Williamsport and Goldie Madeline Wolford of Hagerstown; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by his stepmother, Edith Hall; and two brothers, Floyd Spade and Ernest Spade.
Graveside services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Broadfording Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Glenn Jones will officiate.
A memorial service will follow at Broadfording Church of God.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Jason Todd Danser, 19, of Jacksonville, died Sunday, March 8, 1998.
He is survived by his mother, Ellie Danser of Jacksonville; his father and stepmother, Chris and Susan Danser of Neptune Beach, Fla.; his brother, Daryl Danser of Jacksonville; maternal grandparents, Dr. and Mrs. Richard T. Binford of Hagerstown; and paternal grandparents, Col. and Mrs. David M. Danser of Pompano Beach, Fla.
Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Terry Parker Baptist Church. Burial will be in Arlington Park Cemetery.
The family will receive friends today from 6 to 9 p.m. at Arlington Park Funeral Home, 6920 Lone Star Road, Jacksonville, Fla.
