Bernard W. Palmer

Bernard Whitman Palmer, 78, of 247 E. Howard St., Hagerstown, died Saturday, June 27, 1998, at his home.

Born Oct. 13, 1919, in Williamsport, he was the son of the late Albert Luther and Ethel M. Gigeous Palmer Sr.

His wife, Estella A. Palmer, died in 1996.

He retired from Statton Furniture Manufacturing Co. in 1980 after 38 years of service.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Navy.

He was a Christian.

He was a member of Funkstown American Legion Post 211.

He is survived by three daughters, Sandra K. Crider and Betty J. Alexander, both of Hagerstown, and Nancy E. Palmer of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; three sons, Charles W. Palmer and Frank T. Palmer, both of Hagerstown, and David B. Palmer of Williamsport; a sister, Margaret Krumpe of Hagerstown; two brothers, Albert Palmer of Hagerstown and Donald Palmer of Williamsport; 19 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Robert E. Palmer; and four brothers, Joseph Palmer, Edgar Palmer, Harry Palmer and Paul Palmer.

Services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Louis L. Emerick will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park in Williamsport.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Barbara J. Johnston

BOONSBORO - Barbara Jean Johnston, 68, of 20834 Boonsboro Mountain Road, died Saturday, June 27, 1998, at her home.

Born July 13, 1929, in Columbus, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late William R. and Elizabeth Jane Johnston Lamb.

She was a 1951 graduate of Ohio University.

She was a homemaker.

She was a Presbyterian.

She was a member of Keedysville Senior Citizens and Alpha Delta Pi sorority.

She is survived by two daughters, Lorrie J. Bracaloni, with whom she resided, and Ginny S. Liaskos of Virginia Beach, Va.; two sons, Joseph Kundrat Jr. of Laurel, Md., and Aaron N. Kundrat of Columbia, Md.; two brothers, William Lamb of Williamsburg, Va., and Michael Lamb of Syracuse, N.Y.; and nine grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 11, at 1 p.m. at her daughter's home, 20834 Boonsboro Mountain Road. The Rev. John D. Cozzuli will officiate.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Mark's Episcopal Church Memorial Fund, 18313 Lappans Road, Boonsboro, Md. 21713.

Arrangements are by Bast Funeral Home, Boonsboro.

Hugh B. Millsop Jr.

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Hugh B. "Rip" Millsop Jr., 75, of 659 Cumberland Ave., died Saturday, June 27, 1998, at his home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Good Shepherd, 2700 Luther Drive, Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Gladys I. Rudisill

FREDERICK, Md. - Gladys I. Rudisill, 77, of Sunrise Assisted Living, and formerly of Hagerstown, died Monday, June 29, 1998, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

Born in State Line, Pa., on Sept. 18, 1920, she was the daughter of the late John Wesley and Florence M. Izer Nowell.

Her husband, Donald P. Rudisill, died in 1992.

She was employed by Washington County Hospital.

She was a member of Washington Square United Methodist Church in Hagerstown.

She is survived by one son, D. Edwin Rudisill of Frederick; two brothers, George R. Nowell of Chambersburg, Pa., and William E. Nowell of Scranton, Pa.; one granddaughter; and one grandson.

She was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Rest Haven Cemetery, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown. The Rev. John Rudisill will officiate.

There will be no viewing.

Arrangements are by Davis Funeral Home in Smithsburg.

Ida S. Siler

FUNKSTOWN - Ida Susan Butler Siler, 84, of Funkstown, and formerly of Bakersville, died Monday, June 29, 1998, at Clearview Nursing Home in Hagerstown.

Born May 6, 1914, in Berkeley County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late George Arthur and Ida Velena Linton Butler.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert A. Siler.

She was a graduate of Hedgesville (W.Va.) High School.

She retired in 1976 from Kefauver's Dry Cleaners in Hagerstown.

She was a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Bakersville.

She is survived by three daughters, Joan McCauley of Funkstown, Jean McDonald of Hedgesville and Anna Marie Barrett of Martinsburg; three sons, George Robert Siler of Williamsport, William E. Siler of Boonsboro and Raymond L. Siler of Hedgesville; one sister, Annabelle Henry of San Diego; four brothers, Calvin Butler of Harpers Ferry, W.Va., Albert Butler of Inwood, W.Va, James Butler and Arthur Butler, both of Martinsburg; 15 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Texie Butler; three grandchildren; and her fiance, Ralph "Peck" VanMetre.

Services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Rev. Blaine E. Feightner will officiate. Burial will be in Salem Lutheran Church Cemetery in Bakersville.

The family will receive friends today, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Jessie W. Karn

BALTIMORE - Jessie Woodrow Karn, 84, of 109 Bloomsberry St., died Monday, June 29, 1998, at her daughter's home in Pasadena, Md.

Born in Petersville, Md., on Jan. 6, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Harry Russell and Anna Mae Remsburg Huffer.

Her husband, Ralph Wilmer Karn, died in 1970.

She is survived by six children, Peggy Quasney of Pasadena, Patsy Saxon of Baltimore, Geraldine Bowers of Sacramento, Calif., Sammy Karn, Ralph Karn Jr. and Curtis Karn, all of Baltimore; one sister, Maxine Younkins of Keedysville; three brothers, Hayes L. Huffer of Brunswick, Md., Harry L. Huffer of Rosemont, Md., and Ivan Huffer of Brunswick; and grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Evelyn Gletner; and two brothers, Paul Huffer and Marvin Huffer.

Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, 31 E. Main St., Middletown, Md. The Rev. William M. Bucher will officiate. Burial will be in the Lutheran Cemetery in Middletown.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m.

James E. Alger Sr.

BRUNSWICK, Md. - James Edward Alger Sr., 74, of 123 N. Virginia Ave., died Sunday, June 28, 1998, at College View Center in Frederick, Md.

Born Sept. 26, 1923, in Bolivar, W.Va., he was the son of the late Emanuel and Mamie Painter Alger.

He retired as a security officer from Fort Detrick in Frederick. He previously was employed at Litton's Garage at Brunswick and with the Brunswick Police Department.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.

He was of the Protestant faith.

He was a member of Steadman-Keenan Post 96, American Legion, and a life-member of Disabled American Veterans.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Edith Devine Alger; one daughter, Donna Tritapoe of Brownsville; one son, James E. Alger Jr. of Thurmont; two sisters, Betty Waters of Bolivar, W.Va., and Hazel Myers of Leetown, W.Va.; three brothers, Sullivan Alger of Frederick, Bob Alger and Jack Alger, both of Brunswick; four grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Melvin Alger, Calvin Alger and Leroy Alger.

Services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Brownsville Church of the Brethren, 1911 Rohrersville Road. The Rev. Loyal Vanderveer and the Rev. Brett Lowry will officiate. Burial will be in Brownsville Heights Cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at John T. Williams Funeral Home, 100 Petersville Road, Brunswick. The funeral home will be open today from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to Brownsville Church of the Brethren, 1911 Rohrersville Road, Brownsville, Md. 21715.

Ida M. Weber

Ida Mae Weber, 77, of 18006 Westfield Drive, Hagerstown, died Monday, June 29, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born March 24, 1921, in Maugansville, she was the daughter of the late Ira and Barbara Martin Weber.

She was a member of Mount Olive Mennonite Church in Hagerstown.

She is survived by one sister, Cora Marie Charlton of Hagerstown; two brothers, Isaac M. Weber and Wayne E. Weber, both of Hagerstown; seven nieces, three nephews, 45 great-nieces and great-nephews, and three great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Anna Mary Weber.

Services will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at Mount Olive Mennonite Church, Maugansville Road, Hagerstown. Bishop Glen Martin, Minister Ira Martin and Minister Arlin Eby will officiate. Burial will be in Reiff's Church Cemetery near Maugansville.

The family will receive friends at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Mount Olive Mennonite Church, 13249 Maugansville Road, Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Charles B. Stallings

PURCELLVILLE, Va. - Charles Bing Stallings, 58, of Between the Hills in Purcellville, died Sunday, June 28, 1998, at Loudoun Hospital Center in Leesburg, Va.

Born July 3, 1939, in Leesburg, he was the son of the late Charles Allen and Ethel Simpson Stallings.

He was branch manager for Sheetz Wholesale Co. in Sterling, Va.

He was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Bernice Croson Stallings; one daughter, Melanie Ann Barfield of Virginia; two stepdaughters, Donna Dawson of Purcellville and Bonnie Huber of Stephenson, Va.; one son, Charles B. Stallings Jr. of Florida; one stepson, Del Poland of Purcellville; and two grandsons.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Theodore Allen Stallings and James Henry Stallings.

Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Eackles-Spencer Funeral Home, Harpers Ferry, W.Va. The Rev. Lynn R. Wilbur and the Rev. Christina Suerdieck will officiate. Burial will be in Hillsboro Cemetery, Hillsboro, Va.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, from 7 to 9 p.m., at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, 124 Park St. S.E., Vienna, Va. 22180.
