July 24, 2000

Wayne L. Mason of Stevensville, formerly of District Heights, MD . in Prince George's County, died Monday, July 24, 2000 at Anne Arundel Medical Center, Annapolis, MD. He was 63.

Born February 2, 1937 in Washington, D.C. He was the son of the late Percy and Elsie Haught Mason. He was a member of the Elks in Riverdale, MD where he played Santa Clause for the ladies of the Elks bizarre and the Children's Christmas party from 1993 to 1999. He was the Past Master of the Masons at the Centennial Lodge in Upper Marlboro, MD and a member of the Eastern Star. He was a hunting guide on the Eastern shore from 1975 to 1985. He moved to Stevensville in 1987 where he started his business (U-Pick Peaches and Berries Orchard).

Mr. Mason is survived by his wife of 43 years, Barbara M. Mason, two sons: Wayne Mason, Jr. of Waldorf, MD and Steve Mason of Stevensville, MD., three daughters: Susan Crawford of Pinecliffe, Colorado, Wendy Gundrum of Glassboro, NJ. And Shelly vanOvereem of Bowie, MD. , one sister: Kathryn Thorne of Dunkirk, MD and seven grandchildren.

A gathering for friends and family will be held Wednesday, July 26, 2000, beginning at 2:00pm at the family's Kent Fort Farm, 135 Eastern Lane, Stevensville, MD. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Amercian Kidney Fund, 6110 Executive Blvd. Suite 1010, Rockville, MD 20852

Noah Edward Parlett, of Easton, formerly of Glyndon, died at his home on Monday, July 24, 2000. He was 87. Born in Granite, MD, June 21, 1913, he was the son of the late Luther and Annie Berrian Offutt Parlett. Prior to moving to the Easton area in 1977, he had lived in Glyndon where he had worked as a purchasing manager for Congoleum Industries for 32 years prior to retiring in 1975. A member of Sts Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Easton, he was also a member of the Talbot Rod and Gun Club. Mr. Parlett is survived by his wife, the former L. Genevieve Warfield whom he married in Towson on May 22, 1937; a daughter, Anne P. Reder of Stevenson, MD; a son, Edward W. Parlett of Rosemont, PA and four grandchildren. A Mass for the Dead will be celebrated at the St. Michaels Catholic Chapel, St. Michaels, on Friday, July 28th, at 11:30 A.M. Another Mass will be celebrated at the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Glyndon on August 26, at 12 noon. Burial will be in the New Freedom Cemetery, Eldersburg, MD. Memorial donations may be made to the Talbot Hospice Foundation, 586 Cynwood Drive, Easton, MD 21601.

July 23, 2000

Hazel Virginia Hackett, of Easton formerly of Arbutus and Catonsville, died at her home in Easton on Sunday, July 23, 2000. She was 93.

Born in Secretary, Feb. 2, 1907, she was the daughter of the late William John and Elsie McMahan Sard. After graduating from East New Market High School in 1923, she attended Towson Normal School, which is now Towson State University, where she graduated in 1925. She then taught school in Vienna until her marriage to Alfred M. Hackett in 1930 when they moved to Western Maryland. From 1942 until 1994 when she moved to Easton, she made her home in the Arbutus and Catonsville areas. She was a member of Trinity Cathedral in Easton.

Mrs. Hackett is survived by a daughter, Sylvia L. Hackett of Queenstown; two sisters, Esther E. Dorsey and Sylvia Kemp Sard, both of Easton and a nephew, Herman A. Boog of Vienna.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 27th, at 2 P.M. at Trinity Cathedral, Easton, MD Burial will be at the East New Market Cemetery, East New Market, MD. Memorial donations may be made to the Trinity Cathedral Memorial Fund, 314 North St., Easton, Md. 21601 or to the Secretary United Methodist Church, % Walter Collins, P.O. Box 218, Secretary, Md. 21664.

Robert D. Hartmann, of Easton, formerly of Baltimore, died at The Memorial Hospital at Easton, Md. on Sunday, July 23, 2000. He was 87. Born in Baltimore County, August 7, 1912, he was the son of the late Emil and Anna Snyder Hartmann. After attending public school and the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, he worked in Mielke's Grocery Store in Violetville from 1930 to 1937 at which time he was employed by McLean Contracting Co. as a heavy equipment operator. He retired from McLean's in 1977 with 40 years of service. While attending Poly, he began his semi-pro baseball career playing for the Spring Grove Baseball team. He also played soccer with the Wilmington and West End Booters and football with the Baltimore Collegians. A member of the Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church of Violetville, he was also a member of the Loyal Order of Moose, Easton Lodge #1520 and the Oldtimers Baseball Association. His wife, the former Daisy Kellog whom he married in 1953, died in December of 1988. Mr. Hartmann is survived by his wife, the former Mildred Stenger Geib whom he married in 1990; a daughter, Judith Ann Neff, of Leesburg, Va.; two sisters, Dorothy Malchester of Ferndale and Thelma Adams of Baltimore; a brother, Ted Hartmann of Baltimore; a grandson, David Peddicord, Jr. of Ellicott City; two step-children, Russell Eaton, Jr. and Wendy Moore, both of Denton, Md. and three step-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 27th, at 2 P.M. at the Hubbard Funeral Home, 4107 Wilkins Avenue, Baltimore. Burial will be at the Loudon Park Cemetery, Baltimore. Friends may call at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, Easton, on Tuesday, July 25th, from 2 - 4 P.M. and at the Hubbard Funeral Home in Baltimore on Wednesday, July 26th, from 3 -5 and 7 - 9 P.M.

Alva Diegel Kirchenbauer of Stevensville, formerly of Baltimore died at the North Arundel Hospital, Annapolis on Sunday, July 23, 2000. She was 71.

Born May 10, 1929 in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late James and Elizabeth Eichert McDairmant. After graduating from high school she worked as an Executive Secretary for the VanSant Dugdale advertising firm for 17 years and for the Davisson Chemical in Curtis Bay and later retired from the W.R. Grace Chemical Co. in 1984. Her first husband, Irvin F. Diegel died in 1978. In 1983 she moved to Stevensville where she married George William Kirchenbauer. Mr. Kirchenbauer died in 1994. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary, VFW Post #278, Stevensville and a member of the Stevensville Elks Lodge. Her hobbies included eating steamed crabs, working crossword puzzles, watching television, bingo and dining out with her family. She had a great sense of humor and was a strong-willed woman with a great zest for life.

Mrs. Kirchenbauer is survived by two sons, Irvin F. Diegel and Michael J. Diegel, both of Baltimore; two daughters, Shirley A. Lamb of Severn and Donna M. Johnson of Glen Burnie; a sister, Frances Ferrin of Berlin and three grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Chester, MD on Thursday, July 27, 2000 at 11:00 AM. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday, July 25, 2000 from 7- 9 PM and on Wednesday, July 26, 2000 from 3-5 and 7-9 PM. Burial will be at the Maryland Veteran Cemetery, Hurlock on Thursday at 1:00 PM.

July 22, 2000

Lloyd Ralph Francis, Sr. of Grasonville Died July 22, 2000 at home. He was 80.

Born April 25, 1920 in Chase City, Virginia. He was the beloved son of the late Ocie Price Francis, and Lloyd Ralph Francis. In 1941 he married the late Feannie Hall. He served in the US Navy Air Corp in the Pacific Theater during WW II. He received several commendations for his rescuing downed pilots.

He is survived by a son Lloyd Ralph Francis, Jr, of Sarasota Florida, a daughter Patricia Anne Catterton of Centreville, and a dear companion Marian Thomas of Grasonville and four grandchildren, Donald Catterton, Tammy Hoeffel, Brian Catterton, Ashley Francis and Denny Francis who died in 1978 and six great grandchildren.

Family and Friends may call at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A., 106 Shamrock Road, Chester, MD 21619 on Sunday, July 23, 2000 from 3 – 5 pm and 7 to 9pm. A funeral service will be at the funeral home on Monday, July 24, 2000 at 12 noon. Interment will follow with a graveside service at Hurlock Veterans Cemetery.

The family request that memorial contributions be made to the Hospice of Queen Anne’s County, 300 Del Rhodes Ave, Queenstown MD 21658.

Alan Wayne Sard, of Bruceville, Trappe, died at the Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, on Saturday, July 22, 2000. He was 56. Born in Hurlock, May 12, 1944, he was the son of Catherine Lasier Sard of Cambridge and the late Lloyd Earl Sard. After attending public school, he worked as a storekeeper for the Whiteley Store in Bruceville and then as a maintenance engineer for Memorial Hospital in Easton. For the last 15 years, he had been caring for his mother. Surviving, in addition to his mother, are two sisters, Virginia M. McGraf of Cambridge and Evelyn V. Parillo of Hurlock; three brothers, Lloyd A. Sard and William H. Sard, both of Trappe and Ronald L. Sard of Preston. A sister, Marjorie E. Halsey, and a brother, Jesse E. Sard, are deceased. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 26th, at 11 A. M. at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, Easton. Burial will be at Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday evening, July 25th, from 7 - 9 P.M. and one hour prior to service. Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 114 Baptist St., Salisbury, Md. 21801.

July 21, 2000

James Oscar Creighton of Rock Hall, Maryland died on July 21, 2000 at his home. He was 93.

Born on August 22, 1906 in Piney Neck, Rock Hall, Maryland he was the son of the late Robert Burns and Elizabeth Ward Creighton. As a young man Mr. Creighton worked as a mate and deckhand on various yachts in New York and Florida. He married Bertha Stigile on August 6, 1932 they lived in Newark, Delaware before moving to Rock Hall Maryland in 1945. Residing in Rock Hall, Mr. Creighton worked first as a house carpenter, which steered him in the direction of his career as a boat builder. He worked in this capacity until his retirement in 1980. On March 13, 1993 his wife of 60 years predeceased him. Mr. Creighton was a member of Chestertown Trinity Assembly of God and enjoyed watching sports, especially the orioles.

He is survived by 4 sons; Joseph Creighton of Rock Hall, Md. Teddy Creighton of Rock Hall, Md., Robert Creighton of Benton, Ky., Victor Creighton of Baltimore, Md.; one daughter: Elizabeth Creighton of Rock Hall, Md. along with 7 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. One grandson the late John Mark Boulter predeceased him in 1991.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday July 25, 2000 at 11:00 A.M. at Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home Route #20 Rock Hall, Maryland. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Monday July 24, 2000 between the hours of 7:00 until 9:00 pm. Interment will be in Wesley Chapel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in his name to: Kent County Hospice 103 Dixon Drive Chestertown, Md. 21620 or to Rock Hall Vol. Fire Dept. Building Fund. P.O. Box 577 Rock Hall, Md. 21661.

July 21, 2000

Philip C. Kirby, 77, Founder of Talbot Mentors, lnc., and a, community leader since moving to Easton from West Virginia in 1982, died at Easton Hospital July 21 following a long illness.

Kirby grow up in Mullens, a small village in the southern West Virginia coal fields, and played trumpet in the high school band and at Greenbrier Military School before transferring to the Univesity of Alabama for his sophomore year. He joined the Army Air Corps during World War Il and trained as a gunner on the B-24, B-17 and B-29 bombers, but did not see combat. After the war, he was an accountant in the Budget Office of the State of West Virginia and attended evening classes at Morris Harvey College where he earned a degree in Business Administration in 1949.

He married Evelyn Ferrel of Charlestown, WV in 1949 and soon after became a life insurance agent for Massachusetts Mutual. In 1953, they moved to Wheeling, West Virginia where they resided until building a home in Easton 18 years ago.

An active member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Easton, community service was Mr. Kirby’s life-long endeavor. In West Virginia he served as chairman of a bank, a hospital, a YMCA, and other community service agencies as well as on corporate boards. He was for many years, and until his death, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Wheeling Jesuit University where a new dormitory was dedicated to him and his wife earlier this year. He was also a board member of the West Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges and Universities, an honorary board member of Wheeling Hospital and a co-founder and board member of Habitat for Humanity of Talbot County and the founder and president of Talbot Mentors, Inc.

Mr. Kirby received many awards and honors for his community service, as well as his professional achievements. He was a 26-year member of the Insurance Industries Million-Dollar Roundtable, and in 1982 qualified for the Top Of The Table which represents the top one percent of life insurance agents in the world.

Survivors include, in addition to his wife in Easton, one brother, Robert Wingfield Kirby of Mullen, West Virginia, two sisters, Mary Helen Kirby of Bluefield, Virginia, and Ruth Kirby Shomo of Dover, Delaware; four nephews, two nieces, eight grand-nephews, and six grand-nieces.

Funeral services will be held at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Easton on Tuesday, july 25, 2000 at 11:00 AM. Burial will be at Sherwood Cemetery in Salem, Virgina on Wednesday, July 26, 2000 at 2:00 PM.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Talbot Mentors, Inc., 28380 St. Michaels Road, Easton, MD 21601.

Martha Johnson Summer of Easton died at her residence on Friday, July 21, 2000. She was 87.

Born in Riverside, NJ on December 9, 1912, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Elizabeth Rupel Johnson. In January 1942, she married Walter B. Summer and they made their home in Riverside until moving to Moorestown, NJ in 1949. She was employed as a medical secretary for the Stokes Medical Building in Moorestown for over 30 years until her retirement in 1980. Mr. Summer died in February 1985. In 1990, she moved to Easton.

Mrs. Summer was a member of the Riverside Moravian Church in Riverside, NJ and the Presbyterian Church in Easton. She was also a member and Past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter #101 in Riverside, a volunteer at Contact, a suicide hotline, in Riverside, a member of the Talbot County Women’s Club, a member and President of the Mallard Ridge Homeowner’s Association, a member and volunteer of the Talbot Historical Society, and a volunteer for over nine years for the Talbot Hospice Foundation.

Mrs. Summer is survived by a daughter, Carole L. Ward of Mechanicsburg, PA; a son, Bruce L. Summer of Easton; and four grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Presbyterian Church in Easton on Thursday, July 27, 2000 at 1:00 PM. Burial will be private.

July 18, 2000

A Funeral Liturgy for Adelaide Estelle Hochreiner, of Royal Oak, will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 18, 2000 at 10:00AM. She died on Thursday, July 13, 2000 at the Genesis Eldercare-The Pines in Easton. She was 82.

Born in St. Louis, MO on February 22, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Bertha Studt Seeger. Prior to moving to Royal Oak in 1975, she was a resident of Gladwynne, PA. Her husband, John Richard Hochreiner, whom she married in August 1944, died in September 1999.

She was a member of St. Michaels Catholic Chapel and the Ladies of the Elks, B.P.O.E. #1622, Easton.

Mrs. Hochreiner is survived by a daughter, Bonnie Lynn Hochreiner of Royal Oak; a son, John Charles Hochreiner, and daughter-in-law, Terry Hochreiner, both of Easton; and a brother, Kenneth Seeger of St. Louis, MO.

Friends may call at the Fellows, Helfenbein, & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton on Monday from 6-8 PM with prayers at 7:30 PM. Burial will be at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Eastern Shore, in Beulah.

July 17, 2000

Samuel Clark Harrison, Sr., of Preston, died at the Memorial Hospital, Easton on Monday, July 17, 2000. He was 83.

Born in Trappe, February 13, 1917, he was the son of the late Samuel Francis and Alice Patchett Harrison. After attending public school in Talbot and Caroline County he began a career in farming in which he remained active until the time of his death. He had also been active as a fur trapper and dealer.

A member of the Bethesda United Methodist Church, Preston he was also a member of the Preston Lodge #43, Jr. Order of United American Mechanics, Inc. A lifelong supporter of youth sports activities he was a co-founder of the Tri-City Baseball Leagues and was recently awarded a plaque of appreciation for his support of youth by the Young Peoples Organization of Preston.

His wife, the former Mae V. Morgan to whom he had been married 55 years, died March 1, 1994.

Mr. Harrison is survived by three children, Joyce H. Alderman and her husband, Giles M. of Easton, Samuel "Sam" Clark Harrison, Jr. and his wife, Betty of Secretary, and Dale Morgan Harrison and his wife, Linda of Preston; six grandchildren, Terri Alderman Tull, Scott W. Harrison and his wife, Loretta, Samuel "Skip" Clark Harrison, III and his wife, Jennifer, Troy L. Harrison and his wife, Janet, Daniel M. "Danny" Harrison and his wife, Michelle and Kevin M. Harrison and eight great-grandchildren, Crystal Tull, Samuel Clark Harrison, IV, Grant Dale Harrison, Sanders Harrison, Austin Harrison, Jason Nelson, Brittany Simmons and Bryant Simmons. He is also survived by eight brothers and sisters, C. Lee Harrison of Cambridge, M. Elwood Harrison and B. Hope Harrison, both of St. Michaels, Charles F. Harrison of Easton, Elizabeth H. Bringman of Oxford, Mildred H. Lewis of Cambridge, Catherine H. Wright of Preston and Dorothy H. Wilkins of Salisbury. Two sisters, Myrtle H. Walker and Helen H. Williams and two brothers, Earle O. Harrison and Alvin E. Harrison are deceased.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 21, 2000 at 11:00 AM at the Bethesda United Methodist Church, Preston.

Burial will be in Jr. Order Cemetery, Preston.

Friends may call at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton on Thursday, July 20, from 7-9 PM and at the church one hour prior to the service.

Memorial donations may be made to Young Peoples Organization of Preston, P.O. 728, Preston, MD 21655 or to the Bethesda United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 147, Preston, MD 21655.
