Chester M. Maleski, 84, of Mount Airy

Chester Mark Maleski, 84, of Mount Airy, died Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004, at the Frederick Memorial Hospital, Frederick.

Born Jan. 2, 1920, in Vanderglift, Pa., he was the son of the late Stanley and Josephine Kocon Malecki. He was the husband of Adelheid "Heidi" Bothmann Maleski.

He served his country in the U.S. Army for six years, serving two years in Panama. He was a sergeant upon discharge. He invented the Army name tags.

He graduated after four years from Western Pennsylvania Horological Institute of Pittsburgh for watch and clock repair, engraving and jewelry repair. He was a member of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors Inc., Chapter 11 and was a member of the Elks Lodge in Glen Burnie. He had been a scout master in Glen Burnie for 10 years. He enjoyed gardening and canoeing.

He had a concession at Fort Meade for 35 years, a Hallmark store for four years in Glen Burnie and for 20 years he and his wife were owner/

operators of Heidi's Gift Shop in Mount Airy.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are son Douglas Mark Maleski Sr. and fiancée Jody Baker of Tracy's Landing; stepdaughter Barbara Fishell of Ijamsville; sisters and brothers-in-law Helen and Jack Sarvey of Leechburg, Pa. and Stella and Joseph Marieggi of Freeport, Pa.; brother and sister-in-law Joseph and Helen Malecki of New Kensington, Pa.; sister-in-law and husband Hedwig and Alfred Helfrich; grandson Douglas Mark Maleski Jr. of Japan; stepgranddaughter and husband Regina A. and Evan O'Rourke of New Market; stepgreat-grandchildren Brandy Patterson, Brendan M. O'Rourke, Kaitlin E. O'Rourke and McKenzie C. O'Rourke; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by daughter Francis J. Maleski; and brothers John and Michael Malecki A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 116 E. Second St., Frederick, with the Rev. Wayne Funk as celebrant. Interment will be in Mount Olivet cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 E. Ridgeville Blvd., Mount Airy.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1393 Progress Way, Eldersburg, MD 21784.

Charles E. Mattison, 73, of Hampstead

Charles Edwin Mattison, 73, of Hampstead, died Monday, Nov. 29, 2004, in Cumberland.

Born May 1, 1931, in Baltimore City, he was the son of the late Samuel Roland Mattison and Marie Evelyn Helmpker Mattison. He was the husband of Wanda Jean Davis Mattison.

He was a retired drywall finisher. He was past president and lifetime member of the Beaver Run Fish & Game Club.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are daughters Joyce Elizabeth Almond of Reisterstown, Karen Solomon of Finksburg and Shirley Ann Smart of Jefferson, Pa.; sons Samuel Charles Mattison of Westminster and Kenneth Hamilton Mattison of Eldersburg; stepdaughters Dana Jean Hoffert and Deborah Jean Hammersmith, both of Hampstead; brother Arthur Charles Mattison of Woodlawn; sister Irene Louise Ruppalt of Westminster; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at noon Friday at Eline Funeral Home, 934 S. Main St., Hampstead, with the Rev. Collin Phillips officiating. Interment will be in Lake View Memorial Park, Sykesville.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Robert C. Roy Sr., 80, of Finksburg

Robert C. Roy Sr., 80, of Finksburg, died Sunday evening, Nov. 28, 2004, at his home.

Born July 28, 1924, in North Woodbury, N.J., he was the son of the late Oscar P. and Alice M. Shinn Roy. He was the husband of Stephanie H. Mazak Roy, who died in 1985.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served as a combat engineer during World War II. He was an electrician for 25 years and retired from Honeywell Inc., where he was employed for more than 25 years as a computer engineer.

He was a member of the American Legion Carroll Post 31 and had formerly been a volunteer fire chief and in the civil defense in Vandergrift, Pa.

Surviving are children and spouses Linda L. Roy of Baltimore, Robert C. Jr. and Dee Roy of Baltimore, Cynthia and David Cowan of Charlotte, N.C., and Tom Roy of Finksburg; sister Dorothy Budd of Ft. Pierce, Fla.; grandchildren Steven Gajewski and wife Jacqui of Herndon, Va., Heather Roy and Robert C. Roy III of Baltimore and Philip and Katherine Cowan of Charlotte, N.C.; great-grandchildren Jacob and Nicholas Roy of Baltimore; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by sister Edith Copeland and brother Oscar P. Roy.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 91 Willis St., Westminster, with the Rev. Robert Bell officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Gardens, Finksburg.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Donald L. Miller, 55, formerly of Harford County

Donald Lee Miller, 55, of San Antonio, Texas, formerly of northern Harford County, died Monday, Nov. 29, 2004, in San Antonio.

Born Jan. 8, 1949, in Hoffmanville, he was the son of George William "Bill" and Bertha Emma "Bert" Dukehart Miller of Jefferson.

He was an auto mechanic for many years. Cars played a large part in his life.

He was an Army veteran with over seven years of service.

He attended North Harford High School and played in the band. He formerly attended North Harford Baptist Church, Jarrettsville.

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are son and daughter-in-law Patrick A. and Carolyn Miller of Felton, Pa.; daughter Suzi Miller of Florida; stepchildren Kristi and Brian Davis of San Antonio; brothers William R. "Bob" Miller and partner Sharon Brown of Terrell, Texas, Samuel E. "Sam" Miller and wife Mary of Jefferson and George R. Miller and wife Michelle of Natick, Mass.; sister Shirley A. Miller and partner Kent Perry of Costa Rica; special friends Joe Price, Jim Riley, Dianne McCoy, Earlene and Herbert Schoelzel and Ava Helms and her children Charlynne, Shanda and Chris; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the J.J. Hartenstein Mortuary Inc., 24 Second St., New Freedom, Pa., with the Rev. Calvin H. Cole Sr. officiating. Interment will be held in Middletown cemetery, Freeland, with military honors.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary.

Cornell R. Stuart, 52, of Front Royal, Va.

Cornell R. Stuart, 52, of Front Royal, Va., formerly of Neptune, N.J., died Sunday, Nov. 28, 2004, at home.

Born Nov. 18, 1952, he was the son of Pearl Dorsey.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are former wife Wanda Groomes; daughters Nadeen Stuart and Moneeke Stuart; grandchildren Azurdae Harris and Damontae Summers; sisters Frieda Carey and Ranier Perry; brothers Herb Dorsey and Johnny Dorsey; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Union Street United Methodist Church, 22 Union St., Westminster, with the Rev. Foster officiating. Interment will be private.

The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until time of service Saturday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Pritts Funeral Home and Chapel, 412 Washington Road, Westminster, MD 21157, to help defray funeral costs.

Margaret S. 'Toot' Myers, 83, of Westminster

Margaret Susan 'Toot' Bankert Myers, 83, of Carroll Lutheran Village, Westminster, died on Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004.

Born March 17, 1921, near Westminster, she was the daughter of the late Robert S. and Cora Snyder Bankert. She was the wife of the late Donald Eckert Myers, her husband of 47 years.

She was a long-time employee of Maryland Candy Co. and Myers Variety, and later worked in the Weis Markets Bakery. She and her husband were co-owners of the Longwell and Homestead restaurants in Westminster in the 1950's and 1960's.

She enjoyed music, crocheting, golfing and shopping.

Surviving are son and daughter-in-law James D. and Rebecca L. Myers of Westminster; granddaughter Andrea C. Jones and husband S. Alan Jones of Fredericksburg, Va.; grandson Daniel C. Myers and wife Nicole M. Myers of Littlestown, Pa.; great-grandson Ethan S. Jones; sisters Dora B. Fry of York, Pa., and Mary L. Warner of New Oxford, Pa.; half-sister Audrey Wild of Fla.; stepbrother Marvin Hershey of Calif.; stepsister Joan Hermanns of Hanover, Pa.; extended family Gary and Margaret Anne Wortz and their families in Kansas and North Carolina and Michael and Charlotte Wohlever and Mark and Priscilla Kirschner and their families in Ohio; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by stepbrother Reginald Hershey.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. John's (Leister's) Lutheran Church, 827 Leister's Church Road, Westminster, with her pastor, the Rev. John Morrill, officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Pritts Funeral Home and Chapel, 412 Washington Road, Westminster.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the music program at St. John's (Leister's) Lutheran Church, 827 Leister's Church Road, Westminster, MD 21157.

Esther A. G. Panneton, 87, of Mount Airy

Esther Annette Grandmont Panneton, 87, of Mount Airy, formerly of Ocean City and Laurel, died Friday, Nov. 26, 2004, at Montgomery County General Hospital.

Born Oct. 30, 1917, in Manchester, N.H., she was the daughter of the late William H. and Malvina Bernia Grandmont. She was the wife of Jules Panneton, who passed away in June 2004.

She worked as a telephone operator for Ma Bell before retiring to become a homemaker. She was active in the Alter Society at St. Mary of Mills, Laurel, where she was a member of the Ladies of Charity, a branch of the Knights of Columbus. She worked with Meals on Wheels of Laurel. She was also a Lay Apostolate for St. Luke's in Ocean City.

Surviving are sons Robert J. Panneton of Houston, Texas, and Paul E. Panneton of Sykesville; daughter Annette Fleishall of Sykesville; brothers Paul Emile Grandmont of New Jersey; sisters Theresa Panneton of Vienna, Va., and Jeanette Fleming of Manchester, N.H.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Old Church at St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church Poplar Springs, 1125 St. Michael Road, Mount Airy. Interment will be in Parklawn cemetery, Rockville.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home and Crematory, 1212 West Old Liberty Road, Winfield, with a Christian wake service at 7:30 p.m.

Minnie M. Smith, 84, of Westminster

Minnie Mae Smith, 84, of Westminster, died Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004, at the Hanover Hall Nursing Home, Hanover, Pa., after an extended illness.

Born May 16, 1920, in Alto, Georgia, she was the daughter of the late William A. and Viola Carver Tanner. She was the wife of the Rev. Hubert Corbin Smith, who died June 25, 2001.

Before retiring she was a nursing home supervisor. She and her late husband were the founders of the Open Bible Tabernacle in Baltimore.

Surviving are sons and daughters-in-law Hubert Leon "Lee" and Betty Lee Smith of Savannah, Ga., and Douglas "Doug" and Gloria Ann Smith of Florida; daughter Charlotte Anne Krepka of Hanover, Pa.; son-in-law Daniel Hatfield of Westminster; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by daughter Carolyn Hatfield, who died August 4, 2001; brothers Rudolph, Randolph and Ernest Tanner; and sister Elsie Cochran.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Fletcher Funeral Home, 254 E. Main St., Westminster, with her grandson the Rev. Jerry K. Hatfield officiating. Interment will be in Lake View Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

William E. Brookhart, 75, formerly of Westminster

William Edward Brookhart, 75, of Hagerstown, formerly of Westminster, died Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004, after an extended illness.

Born June 19, 1929, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Leonard Ritter and Clara Elizabeth Brookhart.

He was a veteran of the Korean War, having served in the Army. He retired from the Housing Authority in Baltimore in 1996.

He enjoyed ballroom dancing and teaching others to dance.

Surviving are daughter and son-in-law Nettie and Bill Reese of Westminster; son William Edward Brookhart Jr. of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and grandsons Garrett and Trevor Reese.

Funeral services will be private.

Memorial contributions may be made to Washington County Commission of Aging Nutrition Program, 9 Public Square, Hagerstown, MD 21740.

Doris M. Gladfelter, 72, of Glen Rock, Pa.

Doris M. Ernst Gladfelter, 72, of Glen Rock, Pa., died Sunday, Nov. 28, 2004, at York Hospital, following a lengthy illness.

Born Nov. 19, 1932, in York Township, she was the daughter of the late Elmer E. and Treva Brenneman Ernst.

She was the wife of R. Laverne Gladfelter, with whom she celebrated a 51st wedding anniversary on July 25.

She retired in 1993 as head cook at Susquehannock High School in the Southern York County School District, Glen Rock, following more than 25 years of employment. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Glen Rock, and the Jefferson, Pa., Chapter 3699 of the AARP. She was a 1950 graduate of New Freedom High School in Pennsylvania.

Surviving are son and daughter-in-law Jerry A. and Karen Gladfelter of Eldersburg; granddaughters Kristen and Amy Gladfelter; sisters and brothers-in-law Loretta Sipe of York, Pa., Laura and Richard Kline of Glen Rock, Pa., and Diana and Ronald Snyder of Georgetown, Del.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Geiple Funeral Home Inc., 53 Main St., Glen Rock, Pa., with her pastor, the Rev. Ed Robbins, officiating. Interment will be in Zion Lutheran Church cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Zion Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 49 Hanover Street, Glen Rock, PA 17327.
