November 9, 2000

Simeon H. Cotton, Jr., a retired electronics executive, of Easton, MD formerly of Northern Virginia, died at his home on Thursday, November 9, 2000. He was 65.

Born in Charlotte, N.C., September 22, 1935, he was the son of Dorothy Haase of Dunedin, FL and the late Simeon H. Cotton, Sr. . After graduating from Phillips Academy in Andover, MA, he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from Duke University in 1957. He continued his formal education at the George Washington University where he received a Master of Science Degree in Engineering in 1963.

Mr. Cotton began his career as a design engineer in the Flight Simulation Department at Melpar, Inc. in Falls Church, VA. He was promoted to head of that department, leaving there to become one of the founders of The Simulation Engineering Corporation (SECOR) in 1967. He and his associates specialized in the design and manufacture of training devices, especially for aviation applications. He was one of the inventors of the Digital Flight Simulator for use in training helicopter flight crews. That company became a unit of Sperry Corporation in 1976 and Mr. Cotton and his partners continued their activities through 1985. At that time, the same group established Quintron Corporation, which grew to a position of prominence in the flight simulation industry, producing a wide variety of trainers for the U. S. Navy, Coast Guard, Army and several allied governments. Quintron became an operating unit of The Training and Technical Division of Loral Corporation in 1993.

After his retirement in 1995, that division became part of the Lockheed Martin Corporation. One of the organizers of the National Systems Association, a trade association intended to promote common industrial interests in the general field of computer-based synthetic training devices, he served several terms as an officer of that association. While living in Virginia, he was a deacon and church school teacher at the First Presbyterian Church of Annandale. At the time of his death, he was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Easton.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife, the former Sharron Lee Tolley, of Easton; a son, Robert Christian Cotton of Clearwater, FL; a daughter, Claire Cotton of Reston, VA; a sister, Marcia Everingham of Longview, TX; a brother, Robert D. Cotton of Tallahassee, FL and a granddaughter. His first wife, Elizabeth Knight Cotton, died in 1996. Memorial service will be held at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Easton on Sunday, November 12, 2000 at 2:00 PM.

November 7, 2000

Mrs. Amelia Johnson, 55 years, of Marydel, Maryland, died November 7th, at Kent and Queen Anne's Hospital in Chestertown, Maryland.

Born in Stevensville, Maryland she was the daughter of William W. and Mary A. [Grimes] Jones. She spent all of her life on Maryland's Eastern Shore. A homemaker most of her life she enjoyed her home and her family She particularly liked traveling with on day excursions with her mother and sister. She is particularly fond of her daughter and grandchildren. Mrs. Johnson was a past member of the Millington V.F.W. Post Ladies Auxiliary for a number of years.

Her husband, Roy C. Johnson who died in 1996, precedes her in death. Mrs. Johnson is survived by her daughter Karen Cantwell of Henderson, MD, her parents, William and Mary Jones of Chester, Maryland, her two grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Hanna Cantwell both of Henderson, MD, 2 sisters, Caroline Baxter of Chester, MD, Nancy Holbrook of Webster Springs, W.VA, and her 2 brothers, Charles Jones, of Cambridge, MD, and Weldon Jones of Easton, MD.

Services will be held on Saturday, November 11th at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, 370 Cypress Street, Millington, MD at 1 PM. A viewing will be held on Friday, Friends and family may call from 7 - 9 PM. Interment will be in Sudlersville cemetery, Sudlersville, MD.

Mary Howell Lane, of Easton, died at The Caroline Nursing Home, Denton, on Tuesday, November 7, 2000. She was 79.

Born in Caroline County, March 21, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Herbert Frederick and Louise Pendrell Howell. She attended Caroline County schools. After her marriage in May of 1938 to Marion Francis (Arkie) Lane, they made their home in Easton where, for many years, she was employed as a laundry clerk and later as an egg candler for a local market egg company. She was a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Easton. Mr. Lane died on April 7, 1989.

Mrs. Lane is survived by a daughter, Marie L. Bradley of Easton; a son, Laurence F. Lane of Dunkirk, Md. seven half-brothers and half-sisters, Edward I. Howell, Helen E. Warrington, Emma Lee Fluharty, Gladys Seigler, Martha E. West, Russell H. Howell and Milton Howell; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 11, 2000 at 11 A. M. at the graveside at Woodlawn Memorial Park, Easton.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Mark's United Methodist Church, 100 Peachblossom Road, Easton, MD 21601.

November 6, 2000

Joseph A. Elburn, 85 years of Chestertown, Maryland died on Monday, November 6, 2000 at Magnolia Hall Nursing Center in Chestertown, Maryland.

Born in Chestertown, he was the son of the late Walter L. and Molly Rebecca [Ringgold] Elburn. A life long resident of Kent and Queen Anne's County. He worked the farm doing custom farming with his family. After leaving farming, he went to work for Kingstown Tractor where he worked for almost 13 years as a mechanic. During his spare time he liked to raise plant, and flowers, he loved nature and particularly liked feeding the small animals. He and his family were avid travelers and traveled all over the country.

Mr. Elburn in preceded in death by his parents and two of his brothers, William Walter Elburn who died in 1999 and James E. Elburn who died in 1943. He is survived by two brothers, Edward R. Elburn and Richard D. Elburn both of Chestertown, MD and several nieces and nephews. Graveside Services will be held on Wednesday, November 8th at 11 A.M. at Chester cemetery, Chestertown, Maryland. Reverend Eleanor Laws will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorial contributions be made to Magnolia Hall Nursing Home, Chestertown, Maryland

November 5, 2000

A Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at St. Michaels Chapel, St. Michaels, MD on Thursday, November 9, 2000 at noon for John J. "Jack" Collins, Jr. of St. Michaels who died on Sunday, November 5, 2000 at his home. He was 74.

Born February 21, 1926 in Bergenfield, NJ and raised in Laurelton, NY, he was the son of the late John Joseph and Helen Archer Collins. After graduating from Chaminade High School in Mineola, NY in 1943 he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Following his release from active duty he attended St. Bonaventure University in Olean, NY where he received his B.S. Degree in Business in 1951.

He then worked for Lever Brothers in New York as an auditor until 1956 when he took a position with IBM in New York and Washington, DC working there from 1956-1977. From 1977 - 1984 he worked with Control Data in Washington, DC and in 1984 went to Template Software in Tyson's Corner, Va where he remained until his retirement in 1991 as Executive Vice President.

A member of St. Michaels Chapel and a volunteer for St. Vincent de Paul Society, he was also a volunteer for Food Link and the Talbot Hospice Foundation. Mr. Collins is survived by his wife, the former Regina Elizabeth McNierney whom he married February 11, 1956; five children, Patricia Collins of Erdenheim, PA, Clare Gunther of Pawcatuck, CT, Bernadette Collins of New York, NY, Mary Kay Gaver of Fallston, MD and Joseph Collins of Baltimore, MD; a sister, Julia Flanagan of Easton, MD and six grandchildren.

Friends may call at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton on Wednesday, November 8, 2000 from 3-5 and 7-9. Burial will be at St. Josephs cemetery, Cordova, MD.

Memorial donations may be made to Talbot Hospice Foundation, 586 Cynwood Drive, Easton, MD 21601 or St. Vincent de Paul Society, c/o Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 215 Goldsborough St., Easton, MD 21601.

Donald Alton Tinsman, Sr. of Stevensville died at his home on Sunday, November 5, 2000. He was 67.

Born September 25, 1933 in Washington, DC, he was the son of the late Lawrence and Louise Tinsman. He graduated from Montgomery Blair High School in Olney, MD and began working for C.c. Hamilton & Company as a carpenter until 1981. He later became a self-employed carpenter in Arnold, MD, serving the Anne Arundel and Washington metropolitan area. He retired in 1995 and moved to Stevensville, MD.

Mr. Tinsman is survived by a son, Donald A. Tinsman, Jr. of Rockville and a daughter, Catherine “Kitty” Smoot of Stevensville; two step-sons, Monty Brown and Scott Brown, both of Stevensville; four step-daughters, Dora Frey of Chester, Teresa Flora of Sharpsburg, April Hughes of Queen Anne and Laura Fletcher of Stevensville; a sister, Lucy Bliss of Burke, VA; three grandchildren and nine step-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Chester, MD on Wednesday, November 8, 2000 at 7:00 where friends may call from 5:00 to 7:00 PM.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Queen Anne’s Inc. 300 Del Rhodes Avenue, Queenstown, MD 21658.

November 3, 2000

Marie Jackson Fowler of Centreville, MD died Friday, November 3, 2000 at the Genesis Elder Care-Corsica Hills Nursing Center. She was 93.

Born April 20, 1907 in St. Michaels, MD, she was the daughter of the late Robert Emmit and Elsie Kirby Jackson. After the death of her mother she moved to Baltimore where she was raised by Charles and Lydia Fowler. After attending public schools in Baltimore she attended the Peabody Conservatory of Music for one year where she studied classical piano. In 1941 she took a position with Civil Service and from 1953 to 1973 she worked as a legal secretary for Superior Court Judge Orman W. Ketcham in Washington, D.C. She returned to the Eastern Shore of MD in 1993.

Ms Fowler's only immediate survivors are, a cousin, Audrey G. Lechthaler of Easton, MD; two second- cousins, Suzanne L. Hood of Easton, MD and Donald W. Lechthaler of Frederick, MD. She was also predeceased by an Aunt, Emma Kirby Miller and an Uncle, Harry W. Kirby. Graveside services will be held on Thursday, November 9, 2000 at 3 PM at Olivet cemetery, St. Michaels, MD.

Barbara Spencer Truitt, of Gainesville, FL, formerly of Easton, died at the Hospice of North Central Florida on Friday, November 3, 2000. She was 83.

Born near Easton, February 1, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Dawson and Mary Laura Mullikin Spencer. After graduating from St. Michaels High School in 1933, she, in March of 1934, married John Hamilton Truitt, a native of Harrington, Del. They made their home near Harrington where they operated a local grocery store. At the beginning of World War II when he joined the military, she moved back to Easton where she worked for DelMarVa Narrow Fabrics. She later worked as a seamstress for Yale Sportswear in Easton until retiring in 1981 and moving to Florida. Mr. Truitt died in August of 1961.

Mrs. Truitt is survived by two sons, John H. Truitt, Jr. of Gainesville, FL with whom she had made her home for the last 18 years and Spencer Truitt of Preston; two sister, Bessie L. Robinson and Mary C. Smith, both of Easton and two grandsons, John Joseph Truitt of Fort Lewis, Washington and Sean Joseph Truitt of Preston. She was pre-deceased by three brothers, Alex J. Spencer, Charles F. Spencer and James D. Spencer.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 7th, at 2 P.M. at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, Easton, where friends may call one hour prior to service.

November 2, 2000

Mary Kay Gadow, of Cordova, died at the Memorial Hospital at Easton, MD on Thursday, November 2, 2000. She was 53.

Born in Racine, Wisconsin, November 2, 1947, she was the daughter of Mary F. Craig Daughenbaugh of Richland Center, WI and the late Verlin L. Daughenbaugh. After attending public school, she, in January of 1965, married John C. Gadow, Sr. a member of the United States Navy, in Charleston, S.C. During his military career, they made their home in Charleston, Newport, R.I., Rockfort, Ill., Naples, Italy and Patuxent River Naval Air Station, MD.Following his discharge, they moved to Cordova, MD in 1990.

Surviving, in addition to her husband and mother, are a daughter, Theresa A. Pratt of Parksburg, PA; three sons, John C. Gadow, Jr. and Daniel L. Gadow, both of Cordova, MD and Richard A. Gadow of Cumberland, KY; seven sisters, Beverly M. Yazek and Donna D. Roscizewski, both of Franksville, WI, Betty J. Riley of Richland Center , WI, Carol L. Grant of Mountain Home, AK, Dorothy L. Fronk of Tuba City, AZ, Cathie S. Hilleshiem of Maine ville, OH and Diane J. Tourdot of Reedsburg, WI; two brothers, Donald J. Daughenbaugh of Great Falls, MT and David J. Daughenbaugh of Richland Center, WI and seven grandchildren. Another granddaughter, Mary, died in 1996.

Funeral services were held at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, Easton, MD on Saturday, Nov. 4th, at 11 A.M. Burial will be later in the Bowens Mill cemetery, Richland Center, WI

W. Bradley Lewis died suddenly at Anne Arundel Medical Center on November 2, 2000. He was 50.

Born in Chester Maryland on September 2, 1950, he was the son of the late William H. Lewis and Agnes Eaton. His parents died when he was young, and he was raised by his aunt and uncle, Elaine and Lester Gardner, in Stevensville, MD. They are also deceased.

He graduated from from Queen Anne’ s High School Class of 1968. He then attended St. Mary’s College in southern Maryland. Mr. Lewis worked for Acme Food Markets in Stevensville for 30 years. During that time, he also pursued a furniture refinishing business, Bayside Finishers. He retired from Acme in 1991 to pursue his business full time. On March 30, 1999, he married Jacqueline (Jackie) Minieri of Annapolis, MD. He was a member of Kent Island United Methodist Church.In addition to his wife, he is also survived by a brother, David Lewis of Dover, DE and a sister, Nancy Hall of Denton, MD.

Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, November 7, 2000 at 7:30 PM at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, Chester. Friends may call at the funeral home on November 7 from 6:00PM to 7:30PM.

Gloria May Newnam of Rock Hall, Md. died on November 2, 2000 at Chesapeake Villa Apartments where she was residing in Rock Hall. She was 65.

Born in Delaware on May 4, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Howard T. and Ethel Jessie "Poore" Pearce. Mrs. Newnam worked for General clothing as a line inspector. She was a member of Rock Hall United Methodist Church and enjoyed playing the lottery, reading, cooking, baking, and spending time with her friends and family.

She is survived by 2 daughters: Lou Ann Coppage of Rock Hall, Md. and Valerie Lee Donovan of Rock Hall, Md.; 1 brother: Bruce Wayne Pierce of Dover, De.; 2 sisters: Phyllus Score of Smyrna, De. and Wineford Smith of Panama City, Florida; 4 grandchildren: Brad Coleman, Ashley Carter, Ritchie Carter, and Robby Donovan all of Rock Hall, Md.

Funeral services will be held on Monday November 6, 2000 at 7:00 PM at Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home 130 Speer Rd. Chestertown, Md. Relatives and friends may call on Monday one-hour prior to the service (6:00 PM- 7:00 PM) at the funeral home. Interment will be held privately.

Memorial contributions may be made in her name to Rock Hall United Methodist Church Rock Hall, Md. 21661. Arrangements by Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home Rock Hall, Md.
