Mrs. Ethel Moneymaker
Dated: Friday, June 22, 2001.
Mrs. Ethel Talley Moneymaker, 95, of 1222 Highwood Road, Rockville, died Tuesday, June 19, at Mariner Health Care, Silver Spring.

She was the wife of the late Marshall Price Moneymaker.

Born Jan. 5, 1906, in Orange, Va., she was a daughter of the late John and Carrie Smith Talley.

Surviving are two daughters, Lucille Moneymaker Bogley and husband Gene of Deltona, Fla., and Shirley Moneymaker Barrick of Rockville; three sons, James H. Moneymaker and wife Ann of Niceville, Fla., Marshall S. Moneymaker and wife Lil of Frederick, and Charles D. Moneymaker of Rockville; 17 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Leslie Harper of Mineral, Va.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 28, at First Baptist Church of Rockville, 55 AdClare Road, Rockville, where the family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. until time of services.

Interment will be in Rockville cemetery, Rockville.

Arrangements are by Pumphrey's Colonial Funeral Home, Rockville.

Brother Earl Wetzel, O.M.I.
Dated: Friday, June 22, 2001.
Brother Earl D. Wetzel, Oblates of Mary Immaculate, 67, died Thursday, June 21, at the Oblate Fathers residence in Tewksbury, Mass, of cancer.

A native of Thurmont, Brother Earl was the son of Ernest and Nora Hartdagen Wetzel.

He attended Catholic schools in nearby Emmitsburg, graduating from St. Joseph High School in 1953.

The following fall he entered the Oblate pre-novitiate program in Ipswich, Mass., and took his first vows there in 1955. His final vows were pronounced in his home parish in Thurmont, in the presence of his brother, the Rev. Leo Wetzel, OMI, who had proceeded him into the Oblate congregation.

Brother Earl served the Oblate community at the Novitiate in Tewksbury, Mass., from 1955 to 59, the Shrine in Essex, N.Y., from 1963 to 72, the junior seminary in Newburgh, N.Y., the provincial house in Boston in 1962 to 63 and 1977 to 80, and the Oblate College in Washington, from 1980 to 86.

In these assignments, he picked up mail, ran errands and provided other services for the Oblates stationed in these residences. He was also talented at repairs and maintenance of these residences.

He spent five years at Sacred Heart parish in Lowell, Mass., from 1972 to 77, as custodian for the school and church, using his skills in maintaining the buildings of the parish.

In 1987, he returned to Tewksbury to serve as driver for retired priests, as well as regularly handling the mail for the large number of Oblates in the community.

He is survived by his brother, the Rev. Leo Wetzel, O.M.I., of the Oblate residence in Tewksbury; his sister, Ruth Etheridge of Topton, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews.

His wake will be held Sunday, June 24, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the Oblate Residence, 486 Chandler St., Tewksbury. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, June 25, at 10 a.m. in the Residence Chapel.

Interment will be in the Oblate cemetery.

Donations in memory of Brother Earl may be made to Oblate Infirmary Fund, P.O. Box 419, Tewksbury, Mass. 01876.

Arrangements are by Tewksbury Funeral Home.

Mrs. Helen Purkey
Dated: Saturday, June 23, 2001.
Mrs. Helen Marie Purkey, 76, formerly of Shookstown Road, Frederick, died Thursday, June 21, at Glade Valley Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Walkersville.

She was the wife of the late Lones W. Purkey.

Born May 6, 1925, in Brookeville, she was a daughter of the late Albert Henry and Myrtle Irene Johnson Simms.

Surviving are six children, Shirley M. Kerr of Walkersville, Eugene E. Purkey of Damascus, Joyce Ann Purkey of Emmitsburg, Robert L. Purkey of Mount Airy, G. Wayne Purkey of Frederick, and Lonnie R. Purkey of Braddock Heights; one sister, Elizabeth Phipps of Winter Haven, Fla.; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Purkey was preceded in death by one son, James P. Purkey.

Friends may call from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, June 24, at Olin L. Molesworth Funeral Home, 26401 Ridge Road, Damascus, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 25.

Interment will be in Jennings Chapel cemetery, Woodbine.

Mr. Gilbert Adamson
Dated: Saturday, June 23, 2001.
Mr. Gilbert B. Adamson, 84, of Damascus, Va., formerly of Middletown and Braddock Heights, died Thursday, June 21, at his home.

He was the husband of the late Jean C. Adamson.

He was a native of Toronto, Canada, and moved to Damascus in 1995. He was a son of the late Arthur and Gladys Banwell Adamson.

He was a veteran of the Royal Canadian Navy having served during World War II, and was a member of the St. Thomas Episcopal Church.

He is survived by one daughter, Mary Alice Adamson of Shady Valley, Tenn.; three sons, Noel Adamson of Eureka, Calif., Eric Adamson of Waldorf, and Paul Adamson of Seven Devils, N.C.; one sister, Molly Stein of Jupiter, Fla.; three grandsons, Ian Adamson, Robert Adamson and Ryan Adamson; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 23, at Johnson Funeral Home, Damascus.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 24, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Abingdon, Va., with the Rev. Jay Mills officiating.

Interment will follow Sunset Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 830 Sullins St., Bristol, Va. 24201.

Mrs. Nancy Etchison
Dated: Saturday, June 23, 2001.
Mrs. Nancy Cannon Etchison, 89, died Thursday, June 21, at Edenton in Frederick.

She was the wife of the late Clarence Hampton Etchison.

Born June 4, 1912, in Ellicott City, she was a daughter of the late Henry Warner and Margaret Marie Chambers Lord.

Mrs. Etchison was a member of St. Louis Roman Catholic Church, Clarksville.

Surviving are three sons, Clarence B. Etchison of Frederick, William Lee Etchison of Thurmont, and Robert H. Etchison of Lake Logan, Ohio; six daughters, Nancy Newcomer of Pennsylvania, R. Clarice Roff of Frederick, Margaret Hill of Virginia, Patricia Klaas of Missouri, Ann Etchison of Pittsville, and Dianne Luthy of Cambridge; one sister, Frances Spence of Bushwood; one brother, Eugene Lord of Hagerstown; 18 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, June 24, at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick, where Christian wake services will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, June 25, at St. Louis Catholic Church, Clarksville, with the Rev. Greg Ferri, associate pastor of the church, as the celebrant.

Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Marie Lowery
Dated: Saturday, June 23, 2001.
Mrs. Marie Crawford Lowery, 80, of Gaithersburg, died Thursday, June 21, at Wilson Health Care Center.

She was the wife of Harry M.C. Lowery.

Born March 13, 1921, in Boonsboro, she was a daughter of the late George Leslie and Zula Thomas Crawford.

Mrs. Lowery graduated from Gaithersburg High School and then attended Western Maryland College for four years. She then attended Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington.

She worked as a director of Christian education for the Methodist Church, serving churches in Frederick, Salisbury, Bethesda and Rockville.

Surviving in addition to her husband are one sister-in-law, Dorothy P. Crawford of Germantown; two nephews, G. Thomas Crawford of Adamstown, and Timothy Plummer Crawford of Buckeystown; one great-nephew; and three great-nieces.

Friends may call from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, June 25, at Olin L. Molesworth Funeral Home, 26401 Ridge Road, Damascus, where funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. Monday.

Graveside services and interment will be held at noon Tuesday, June 26, in Hill Crest Memorial Park, Cumberland.

Memorial donations may be made to Epworth United Methodist Church, 9008 Rosemont Drive, Gaithersburg, Md. 20877.

Mr. Carl Bender
Dated: Saturday, June 23, 2001.
Mr. Carl Isaac Bender, 75, of 106 Pine Ave., Frederick, died Thursday, June 21, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

He was the husband of Bertha Marie Wolf Bender.

Born Nov. 29, 1925, in Yellow Springs, he was a son of the late Isaac George and Elizabeth Catherine Perkins Bender.

Mr. Bender was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy.

He had worked at Dairy Maid Dairy, Crown Cork and Seal Co., was a city police officer, and was also retired from delivery of The Frederick News-Post and The Washington Times.

Mr. Bender was a member of North Frederick Congregation of Jehovah's Witness. He was an outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and boating.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, William Carl Bender and Brian Keith Bender, both of Baltimore; two daughters, Sharon Lynn Bender of Reedsville, W.Va., and Glenda Griffin of Hurlock; four stepsons, Roger Chadderton and Wayne Chadderton, both of Frederick, Dale Chadderton of Mansfield, Ohio, and Chip Chadderton of Terra Alta, W.Va.; several grandchildren, including Christina Lynn Bender, Brandon Bender, Brian Bender and Brandy Bender; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, June 24, at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick, where funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. Sunday, with Elder Gregg Callahan officiating.

Interment will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 26, in Mount Olivet cemetery. Those wishing to attend should assemble inside the main gate by 12:45 p.m.

The Rev. Ivory Blackman Sr.
Dated: Saturday, June 23, 2001.
The Rev. Ivory P. Blackman Sr., 85, of Westminster, died Thursday, June 21, at Carroll County General Hospital, Westminster.

He was the husband of Ida Belle Blackman, who died Sept. 17, 1991.

Born Sept. 21, 1915, in Ackerman, Miss., he was a son of the late Silas and Eliza Turner Blackman.

The Rev. Blackman was a Methodist minister. He was appointed associate minister of the Westminster United Methodist Church in June 1972, coming to Westminster from Calvary United Methodist Church, Washington.

He graduated from Rust College, Holly Spring, Miss., and Gammon Theological Seminary in Atlanta. He entered the Baltimore Conference in 1942 from the Upper Mississippi Conference and served churches in Buckeystown, Martinsburg, Sykesville, Rockville and Washington.

The Rev. Blackman served as secretary of the commission on World Service and Finance of the Baltimore Conference and served as a member of the Board of Pensions of the conference. He was a member of Union Street United Methodist Church and a member of the Masonic Lodge.

Surviving are two daughters, Catherine B. Rollins and husband John of Frederick, and Ethel P. Blackman of Gaithersburg; two sons, Ivory P. Blackman Jr. and wife Vera of Evansville, Ind., and O. Marshall Blackman of Gaithersburg; eight grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Ethel Blackmon of Jackson, Miss.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 26, at Fletcher Funeral Home, 254 E. Main St., Westminster, where wake services will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday.

The Rev. Blackman will repose from 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 27, until time of funeral services at 11 a.m. Wednesday, at Westminster United Methodist Church, 165 E. Main St., Westminster. The Rev. Howard Henson, pastor of Union Street United Methodist Church, will officiate.

Interment will be in White Rock cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Union Street United Methodist Church, 22 Union St., Westminster, Md. 21157.

Col. Thomas Benson
Dated: Saturday, June 23, 2001.
Col. Thomas Edward Benson, U.S. Army ret., 78, of Lewes, Del., formerly of Frederick, died Thursday, June 21, at Lewes Convalescent Center in Lewes. He had been a patient for the past three years at Crumland Farms, Frederick.

He was the husband of Ruth Reinette Benson, his wife of 54 years.

Born Aug. 15, 1922, in Cambridge, Mass., he was a son of Milton O. and Anastasia Fitzgerald Benson.

After serving in combat in North Africa during World War II, Col. Benson attended the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., graduating in 1947. He also held a master's degree from George Washington University.

He served four tours of duty in Vietnam where he was a battalion commander. He received many awards including the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal and the Bronze Star, all with oak leaf clusters, as well as the Army Commendation Medal and the Vietnam Medal of Honor 1st Class.

Col. Benson retired after more than 30 years of Army service and worked for another 10 years at the Department of Energy in Washington. He then retired to Lewes, where he became an artist and taught painting and sketching classes at the University of Delaware and, as a volunteer, to inmates at the Delaware State Prison. He ran the sketch group of the Rehobeth Art League for many years. He was a member of Kiwanis.

Surviving are two sons, Michael D. Benson and wife Deborah of Bluemont, Va., and Kevin T. Benson of Point of Rocks; three daughters, Mary E. Benson and Kathleen Perez and husband Tom, all of Mount Airy, and Kristina Fisher and husband John of Oak Hill, Va.; seven grandchildren, Fiona, James and Thomas Kelly, Shane Benson, Anastasia Fisher, and Cassandra and Nicholas Perez.

Interment will be held Wednesday, June 27, in the cemetery at West Point.

Arrangements are by Parsell Funeral Home, Lewes.
