Mrs. Agnes Moxley

Mrs. Agnes Louise Watkins Moxley, 75, died peacefully at her home, Thursday morning Oct. 9, 2008, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was the loving wife of Robert Ray Moxley, her husband of 57 years.

She was born Feb. 5, 1933. She grew up on a farm in Cedar Grove, a daughter of the late Granville W. and Dorothy Hawkins Watkins.

Agnes graduated from Damascus High School.

She worked as secretary and vice president of the family business, was a homemaker, and was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

Surviving besides her husband are three children: Robert Patrick Moxley and his wife Paula; Daniel Ray Moxley and his wife Deborah; and Virginia Lynn Norwood and her husband Steve. Grandchildren: Richard and Rachel Moxley; Angie and Kevin Kidwell; Brent Moxley and fianc?e Laura; Shaun and Amber Norwood; and Katelynn and Matt Raspa; and the light of her life, great grandchildren: Jack, Sarah, Peyton, Reilly and Audrey; sister Linda Watkins Andrews and her husband Ed; and sister-in-law Ardean Watkins.

Mrs. Moxley is preceded in death by a brother William E. Watkins.

She was surrounded by a large circle of family and friends all very close to her heart.

Friends may call 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 12, at Molesworth-Williams, P.A., Funeral Home, 26401 Ridge Road, Damascus. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 13, at Montgomery United Methodist Church, 28325 Kemptown Road, Damascus. The Rev. Robert M. Braden, will officiate. Pallbearers will be: Richard Moxley, Brent Moxley, Shaun Norwood, Matt Raspa, Kevin Kidwell, and Richard Reader. Interment will follow in Montgomery Methodist cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Damascus American Legion Auxiliary - Post 171, 10201 Lewis Dr., Damascus, Maryland 20872 or Montgomery United Methodist Church at the address listed above.

Mr. Addison Layer

Mr. Addison Grafton Layer, 88, of Adamstown, husband of 63 years to Ermine, was called to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008, at Northampton Health Care Center in Frederick. Born on April 29, 1920, in Adamstown, he was the son of the late George Layer and Ada (Weedon) Layer.

Addison joined the United States Navy in 1944. He served as group leader for company 111 (seaman first class). Addison began working for the U.S. Government Transportation Department at the National Institute of Health in 1950. He retired in 1984. He loved watching the Orioles play and the Washington Redskins. He was a member of Buckeystown United Methodist Church where he had served as president of trustee. Addison was also member of the United Methodist Men. Addison was a member of James E. Stewart No. 49 Masonic Lodge, where he served as honorary worshipful past master. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family.

In addition to wife, Ermine, Addison was a loving father to his five children: Grafton Layer (Joyce), Beverly Pannell (Bruce), Warren "Ricky" Layer (Betty), Karl Layer (Rosalyn) and Camilia Layer-Hopper (Bruce), all of Frederick. He leaves behind 16 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; one brother, David Layer, and sister-in-law, Mary; sister, Mildred Olney; brother-in-law, Adolphus Weedon, and wife, Marguerite; three God-children, Shawnette Allen, Neal Hall IV and April Layer; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and devoted friends.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ada Ambush and Minnie Leekins; two brothers, William and Samuel Layer; and grand-daughter, Crystal Rollins.

Celebration of life services will be held beginning at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, at Brook Hill United Methodist Church, 8946 Indian Springs Road, Frederick. Viewing will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opposumtown Pike, Frederick; family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Interment will be at Resthaven Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Buckeystown United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 283. Buckeystown, MD 21717.

Mrs. Cheryl Rippeon

Mrs. Cheryl L. Rippeon died Monday Oct. 6, 2008 at the Hanover Hospital. She was born Sept. 25, 1959, and she was the daughter of William and Sophia Barron of Pittsburgh, Pa. Also surviving are her loving husband, Clyde "Speedy" Rippeon of Hanover, Pa. and mother-in-law Nellie Rippeon of Frederick; two sisters Janine Neil of Pittsburgh, Pa. and Kathy Williams and husband Danny of Roanoke Va., several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephew.

A brother David Barron of Pittsburgh, Pa., preceded her in death. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17 at Christ Reformed Church, Middletown.

Mrs. Katherine Wills

Mrs. Katherine A. Wills, 87, of Frederick, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008, at Northampton Manor Nursing Home. Born Feb. 17, 1921, she was the daughter of Johnny and Daisy Shankle.

Katherine was the wife of 52 years to the late John Richard Wills, Sr., who passed away in 2003.

She was a long-time employee as a seamstress at the Magnetic Device, Frederick. Mrs. Wills enjoyed playing bingo and baking for the Parkway Community Church, where she was a longtime member. She was the last living person in her immediate family.

Katherine is survived by her stepchildren, John Wills Jr. (Phyllis), Thomas E. Wills and Shirley Freed. She also leaves behind a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mrs. Wills was preceded in death by her brother, Richard "Dickey" Shankle.

Friends will be received from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13, at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick, where services will be held at 2 p.m. in the Etchison Memorial Chapel of the funeral home, with the Rev. Howard Ruley officiating.

Interment will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick.

Ms. Margaret Wiles

Ms. Margaret Burgess Wiles, distinguished nursing administrator, died Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008.

A native of Brunswick, Ms. Margaret Burgess Wiles was born Feb. 7, 1915, to Nellie and Charles Wiles.

After graduation from Brunswick High School, she commenced her undergraduate studies at nearby Hood College in Frederick, graduating in the midst of the Great Depression in 1936. She received a professional degree in 1942 from Johns Hopkins Hospital's School of Nursing in Baltimore. After graduation, she worked as a staff nurse at both the Anne Arundel County Health Department in Annapolis and also at the Washington, D.C., Health Department. Her subsequent studies included several years at Catholic University in Washington, D.C., where she completed basic preparation in public health nursing. An M.A. degree from the University of Chicago in 1951 formed the capstone of her academic career, which prepared her for a high profile professional career at the national level in public health nursing. Ms. Wiles' professional career was launched in 1946 when she was appointed to the position of supervisor of the Frederick County Health Department in Frederick; she subsequently served as a pediatric nursing consultant to the Maryland State Department of Health in Baltimore and as a public health nursing consultant to the Hunterdon Medical Center in Flemington, N.J. In 1957, she was appointed assistant director of the Department of Public Health Nursing in New York City, where she remained until 1965, when she was named director of the division of nursing within the Pueblo City-County Health Department in Pueblo, Colo.

In 1967, she became the assistant chief within the division of nursing and head of department of public health nursing in the Washington State Department of Health. Several years later in 1970, she became the executive director of the community nursing service of Essex and West Hudson in East Orange, N.J.

Spanning decades, Ms. Wiles' long career in public health nursing was marked by a singular determination and dedication to the welfare of others. She will be much missed, not only by those within the national community of public health nursing familiar with her work, but especially by her family who dearly loved her. Ms. Wiles is survived by her brother, the Very Rev. C. Preston Wiles, Ph.D., dean Emeritus of St. Matthews Episcopal Cathedral Dallas, Texas; her niece, Dr. Mary Margaret Wiles, lecturer at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand; and her nephews, Charles Preston Wiles Jr., M.D., of New Haven, Conn., and Capt. Wade Burgess Wiles, of Dallas, Texas.

A memorial service will be held at noon, Saturday, Oct. 11, at Fairhaven Chapel, with the Rev. Sara Lewis officiating.

The interment will be private.

Arrangements conducted by the Keeney and Basford, P.A., Funeral Home, Frederick.

Ms. Stewart Coale-Harris

Ms. Stewart Coale-Harris (Nanny), 96, of Adamstown, passed away Thursday, Oct. 9, 2008, at Kline Hospice House of Frederick.

She was born Oct. 24, 1911, in Ruxton. She was the daughter of the late Charles and Mary Coale. She was preceded in death by her husband, Les Harris, on Dec. 4, 1957, and three brothers, Charles, Royston and Sam Coale.

She is survived by one son and his wife, Bruce G. Bohman and Sharon of Laveta Colorado. Also survived by three granddaughters, Alisa Sorenson of North Carolina, and Stacey Grove and Kelly Curry of Colorado, along with five great-grandchildren and several more nieces and nephews.

She retired from the Black and Decker Corporation and went on to become a caregiver to the elderly.

The last 20 years of her life were spent in Mt. Juliet, Tenn., with family helping raise two great-great-nieces, Lara and Christy Kraemer, who called her Nanny.

She will forever be loved and missed by her family, friends and all who were blessed to have known her.

In lieu of flowers and cards the family has requested if you can, to please make a donation to Kline Hospice House of Frederick, 7000 Kimmel Road, Mount Airy MD 21771. That is the way she would have wanted it.

Mrs. Evelyn Harbaugh

Mrs. Evelyn V. Harbaugh, 86, of Thurmont, died Thursday, Oct. 9, 2008, at her home. She was the wife of the late Alvie S. Harbaugh.

Born Sept. 7, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Esther Shingledecker Webb.

Mrs. Harbaugh was a past member of the Weller United Methodist Church. She worked for over 20 years at the Rambler Motel. She enjoyed spending time with her family and working crossword puzzles.

She is survived by three children, Merle "Butch" Shorb of Westminister, R. J. Shorb and wife Betty of Thurmont, and Sharon Walker and husband Bill of Chester, Va. There are five grandchildren, four step grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, five step-great grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She will also be remembered by her good friends Emily and Fred Slovic, Wanda Myers and Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Burrier. She was preceded in death by a daughter Rebecca Shorb and two sisters, Thelma Miller and F. Grace Starner.

The family will receive friends from 9 a.m. until service time at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 13 at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 104 E. Main St., Thurmont.

The Rev. Richard Broome will officiate.

Interment will be at Mt. Hope cemetery, Woodsboro.

Mrs. Baerbel Cooper

Mrs. Baerbel Cooper passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008, at Frederick Memorial Hospital, from complications of pancreatic cancer.

Baerbel was born in Lockstedter Lager, Germany, June 21, 1946, to Carla Murr Kruse, the third of three daughters. She was raised in post-war Germany, then traveled to the U.S. as an au pair in 1969. While in the U.S., she met Lee Sharpe and the two were married in October 1972. Baerbel and Lee raised four daughters before divorcing 23 years later.

Baerbel worked for the German military as a secretary following her au pair position, then joined the floral business. She joined Morgan-Keller, Inc. in 1992, working her way up to human resources and safety administrator. Baerbel had a drive for learning but was never able to attend college in Germany due to lack of opportunity. Using Morgan-Keller's employee tuition reimbursement option, she enrolled in Mount St. Mary's University, receiving a B.S. in business administration in 2005, graduating summa cum laude. In 2002, she met and fell in love with Harold Cooper and the two were married in August 2005. She never stayed still; in addition to school, a new love and work, Baerbel found time to be active in the church and community, and enjoyed crocheting blankets for her grandchildren and prayer shawls for church members.

Baerbel is survived by her husband, Harold Cooper; daughter Sonja Sharpe and son-in-law Jeb Keiper; daughter Stephanie Sharpe; daughter Susan Sharpe; daughter Stacey Steinhaus and son-in-law Eric Steinhaus; stepdaughter Nicole Weston and son-in-law Glen Weston and stepdaughter Kimberly Mahler and son-in-law Timothy Mahler. She is also survived by her grandchildren Benjamin and Christian Keiper, Alyxandra Hoover, and Olivia and Sophia Weston; her sister Eike Wengert and brother-in-law Hans Wengert, and nephew Uwe Wengert and niece Marion Munro reside in Germany.

A memorial service for Baerbel Cooper will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 13, at Calvary United Methodist Church at West and North Bentz streets, Frederick, in the sanctuary with a visitation and reception to follow in the parish hall. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for donations to be sent to the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research at www.lustgarten.org.

Miss Martha Thompson

Miss Martha L. Thompson, 63, of Clarksburg, died Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2008, at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, Rockville.

Born June 11, 1945, in Providence, R.I., she was the daughter of the late Charles and Gladys Schofield Thompson.

Miss Thompson attended the University of Rhode Island and went on to receive her degree in cartography from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. She had worked for the Defense Map Agency in Bethesda and had also been inspector general for a mapping company in Reston, Va.

Surviving is her longtime companion Elaine Tomasetti of Clarksburg.

Friends may call at the Molesworth-Williams, P.A., Funeral Home, 26401 Ridge Road, Damascus, from 10:30 a.m. until memorial services begin at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11.

Interment will be private.

Expressions of sympathy may be in the form of memorial contributions to the Montgomery County Humane Society, 14645 Rothgeb Drive, Rockville, MD 20850. It is suggested to indicate memorial donation for Martha L. Thompson on your check.

Dr. Michael Riley

Dr. Michael N. Riley, 58, passed away suddenly Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008, in Reston, Va. from a massive heart attack.

He was born Oct. 4, 1950, in Chicago, to Michael Norman Riley Sr. and Elizabeth Bellheimer Riley. He is survived by his wife, Gail; their daughter, Michelle of Gaithersburg; Michelle's fiance?, Kevin Roehner; his sister, Jackie Ansted of Chicago; his brother-in-law, Chuck Meagher of Chicago; numerous nieces and nephews of Chicago; dear friends, Guy and Kathy Hofer of Middletown; and his dog, dear friend, and confidant Riley Riley.

Dr. Riley started his career at St. Rita High School in Chicago as an English teacher. He later served as director of studies and director of admissions on the Board of Administration for seven years. Dr. Riley came to Frederick in 1984 and served until 1993 as principal of Middletown High School and Gov. Thomas Johnson High School.

In 1993, Mike became superintendent of Northwest Areas Schools in the Baltimore County Public Schools. In 1995, he was promoted to deputy superintendent, Baltimore County Public Schools where he served for four years. In July 1996, Dr. Riley assumed the position of superintendent of the Bellevue School District where he served for 13 years, resigning in November to become the senior vice president for the College Board's EXCELerator Schools Program.

Mike was a brilliant educator and one of the country's most respected superintendents of schools. Educators around the country mourn the loss of one of their most valued voices.

Mike loved his work and he loved his family. Everyone that knew him, knew that Gail and Michelle were his real world. Mike will always remain a hero to his daughter Michelle. His loss and their grief is heart breaking.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to a children's charity of your choice. Bellevue Schools Foundation has established the Mike Riley Legacy Funds to honor Mike's vision, passion and leadership during his tenure in Bellevue Schools. Contributions to the fund should be sent to the Bellevue Schools Foundation (BSFDN.org). Mike was also active in the YMCA of Greater Seattle (SeattleYMCA.org), the Bellevue Boys and Girls Club (BGCA.org), and YES (YouthEastSideServices.org).

A public viewing will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, at Sunset Hills Memorial Park and Funeral Home, 1215-145th Place Southeast, Bellevue, Wash. A public memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at the First Presbyterian Church of Bellevue, 1717 Bellevue Way NE, Bellevue, Wash.
