Mrs. Viola Roberts

Viola Katherine (Young) Roberts, 93, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, at the Frederick Memorial Hospital Wednesday evening, Oct. 15.

Born Oct. 20, 1914 in Walkersville, she was the daughter of Virgie and Roy Kidd. Mrs. Roberts resided at the Homewood Retirement Center during her waning years.

Mrs. Roberts was a graduate and valedictorian of her class from Walkersville High School. She was employed for many years at Sears and Roebucks. She sold cancer insurance and operated numerous restaurants, the last being the Tastee Nook on Rosemont Avenue. Many customers remember her smiling face and warm greetings at the East Gate Donut Shoppe where she worked part time into her 80s. She was a devoted and loving mother, who worked seven days a week most of her life, raising four children on her own and instilling and teaching with them strong work ethics, community consciousness and ethical standards. She was married to Fred Young, who was the father of her four children. She played the violin and Hawaiian guitar in her younger life, loved to read and dance and was a avid bingo player in her later years. Vi was personable with hundreds of friends and touched the lives of many more people.

Mrs. Roberts' is survived by her sons, Fred W. Young Jr. and wife Pat and Ronald N. Young and wife, Karen; her daughter Sandra Mobley and husband Ken of Mesa, Ariz., her 10 grandchildren, Dale Young and wife Melanie, Susan McGinnis and husband Bob, Doug Young and wife Marsha, Brian Young and wife Kathy, Brad Young and wife Cheryl, Blaine Young and wife Karen, Alex Young and fianc?e Lee Ann Gunther, Carrie Bentz and husband Deland and Greg and Nicole Corbett. She was further survived by 14 great-grandchildren.

Visitation with family will be 7 to 9 p.m., Monday, Oct. 20, 2008 at the Keeney and Basford P.A. Funeral Home 106 E. Church St., Frederick.

Funeral services will be private at the convenience of the family.

Mrs. Abbie Sammis

Mrs. Abbie Esther Muller Sammis, 100 years old, formerly of Unionville, died in her West Virginia home on Oct. 7, 2008.

She was the wife of the late Robert W. Sammis, Sr. Abbie had an extraordinary life, living in Europe, Germany during Hitler's reign, New York City, working for Senator Rabenold. She went to college at Katherine Gibbs and Hunter College. After her marriage to Bob Sammis Sr., she was a teacher at Libertytown School and then secretary at Linganore High School under Harry O. Smith. She and her family resided in Unionville for 40 years.--

Abbie, known to most as "Nana"--is survived by her three children, Bob Jr., of Virginia, Carolyn of West Virginia and Diana of Texas, five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held this Saturday at noon at Carolyn and Abbie's home at 206 Giles Mill Road, Bunker Hill, W.Va. 304-229-4112 .

Mr. Robert Shearer

Mr. Robert W. Shearer, 65, of West Water Street, Smithsburg, died Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2008 at the Frederick Memorial Hospital in Frederick.

Born May 1, 1943 at Wolfsville, he was the son of the late Robert L. and Virginia A. (Kline) Shearer.

He was a graduate of Middletown High School, class of 1961.

He was employed at Landis Machine Company of Waynesboro, Pa. for 39 years.

He was a member of St. Marks Lutheran Church of Wolfsville and Waynesboro Fish and Game Club.

He is survived by his wife, June VonEiff-Shearer, stepchildren Pamela VonEiff and fiance David Turner, Melissa VonEiff-Fraser and husband Brandon, and Michelle VonEiff-Hobbs and husband Ra; , step-grandchildren Bradley Hobbs, Danielle Hobbs, Madison Fraser and Chloe Fraser; sister Paulette V. Harrison of Hagerstown; brother Gary L. Shearer Sr., of Franklin, Tenn., four nephews, one niece, seven great-nieces and two great-nephews.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 18 from the J.L. Davis Funeral Home in Smithsburg with Pastor Wayne Hall and the Rev. Wallace (Bud) Lusk officiating. Burial will be in St. Mark's Lutheran Church cemetery of Wolfsville. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.

Mr. Albert Davis

Mr. Albert Dean Davis, age 58, of York Springs, Pa., died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2008 at his home.

He was born Oct. 23, 1949 in Baltimore, the son of the late Archie F. Davis and the late Bessie Elizabeth Davis (nee Tucker).

He worked at Hoff Brothers Lumber for 28 years. He was a member of the Mason-Dixon and Keystone Falcon Club of America. He also restored Falcons.

He was the husband of Janis M. Davis (nee Staub).

Father of Shannon M. Davis-Green and husband Elvin E. Green II of Abbottstown, Pa.

Brother of Simon H. Davis of Westminster, Archie F. Davis Jr., and wife Frances M. of Woodbine, Ralph F. Davis and wife Dianne of Mount Airy, Evelyn E. Davis of Taneytown, Hilda C. Davis of Mount Airy, Loretta M. Davis of Taneytown, Lucille V. Byrd of Sykesville, and Nancy L. Hatfield of Woodbine.

Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and family members.

Son-in-law of Paul and Dora Lee Staub of Florida.

Brother-in-law of Justine Diaz and Stanley of Florida, Paul and Patsy Staub of Hampstead, and Joanna and Donald Silbaugh of Florida and their families.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the Burrier-Queen Funeral Home and Crematory, P.A., 1212 W. Old Liberty Road, Winfield (Beside South Carroll High School)

Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home and Crematory, P.A., with the Rev. O.F. "Bud" Kibbe officiating.

Inurnment will be held at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens in Hanover, Pa., at a later date.

Arrangements are by Burrier-Queen Funeral Home and Crematory, P.A.

Mrs. Belva McElfresh

Belva I. Harne Reynolds McElfresh, 88, passed away in her sleep on Sept. 11, 2008, in Tuscaloosa, Ala., after an extended illness.

Born in Frederick County on April 21, 1920, Belva was the third born child of Earnest Franklin and Eva Elizabeth Harshman Harne.

She grew up in Frederick County where she was a classmate of her future husband, James C. Reynolds, in the one-room schoolhouse they attended on the grounds of Central Methodist Church near the Old Annapolis Road. Following the death of her husband James in 1953, Belva worked as a bookkeeper for a number of Frederick firms until her retirement.

In addition to her first husband, Belva was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings, Ruth Virginia Harne, Louise Harne Umberger (John) Summers ("Pete"), Gertrude Harne Francis (Roy), Ernest "Buddy" Franklin Harne (Rose), Madeline Harne Poole Knill (John) and Gordon Wilson Harne (Doris). Belva was also preceded in death by her husband of twenty years, John H. McElfresh, and her daughter Barbara "Bobbie" Reynolds Gross.

She is survived by her sister Annabelle Marie Harne Anderson ("Bill"); her daughters Doris Martin Bailey of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Sasha (Thelma) Reynolds-Neu and husband Herb of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; and her son-in-law Peter Gross of Fort Myers, Fla. Ten grandchildren survive Belva: Darrell Martin (Kathy), Susan Hansen (Greg) and Travis Paul Bailey all of Salt Lake City, Marlene Story (Joe) of Conway, Mo., James Martin (Kathy) of Hazlehurst, Ga., Clint Bailey of Waverly, Tenn., Celeste Schroyer Morgan of Birmingham, Ala., and Heath Schroyer, Dawn Gross and Greg Gross, all of Knoxville, Tenn. Twenty-five wonderful great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and the members of the McElfresh family also survive Belva.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at Central United Methodist Church. The Rev. Charles Wolfe will officiate. Interment will be in the Central cemetery. Friends and family are invited to gather for refreshments in the hall at Central Church after the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Central cemetery of Frederick County, Inc., c/o June Glisan, 12502 Old Annapolis Road, Mount Airy, MD 21771.

Mrs. Margaret Stull

Margaret V. Stull (Maggie), 83 of Walkersville, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2008 at the Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of the late Charles C.T. Stull Jr.

Born May 20, 1925 in Frederick, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Margaret Yinger.

Maggie was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church, Frederick. She was a member of the church choir and loved singing hymns and tunes from the Big Band era.

She was a 1942 graduate of Frederick High School.

She was a member of the Walkersville Senior Citizens and Homemakers and was a member of the Parkinson’s Support Group, Mount Pleasant. Maggie was an avid reader and bowled at the Walkersville Lanes for many years.

She is survived by her four children, Myra Anderson and husband Larry of Evergreen, Colo., Mark Stull and wife Cindy of Walkersville, Sally Miller and husband Joseph of Keymar and Andrew Stull and wife Kathy Sixx of Walkersville; six grandchildren, Neil Anderson and wife Nanette of Thornton, Colo., Grant Anderson and wife Jennifer of Frisco, Colo., Amy Stull of Frederick, Darin Stull of Walkersville, Nicholas Miller of Washington, D.C. and Michael Miller of Baltimore, two great-grandchildren, Leif Anderson and Gavin Anderson both of Colorado, a sister-in-law, Regina Yinger and her niece and nephews.

In addition to her husband she is preceded in death by a brother, Robert Yinger.

Maggie’s greatest achievements have been in the lives of her family and friends. She had the unique gift to recognize and appreciate others and to make them feel welcome and loved. Her kind and generous heart filled her home with love, fun, family and friends.

She will also be dearly remembered by the staff and all of her friends at Heartfields Assisted Living.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., Friday, Oct. 17, at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 40 Fulton Ave., Walkersville. Funeral service will be held at the funeral home 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18 with the Rev. Robert Lehman officiating.

Internment will be in Glade cemetery in Walkersville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Margaret S. Stauffer Fund, c/o The Community Foundation of Frederick County, 312 E. Church St., Frederick, MD 21701.

Mr. Robert Coop

Mr. Robert Edwin Coop, 48, of Frederick, died Thursday, Oct. 16, 2008, at his residence. He was husband of Tina Jean Dinnis Coop, his wife of 19 years.

Born Jan. 18, 1960, in the Sudan, he was the son of Donald Charles and Ruby Mae Sullivan Coop of Hanover, Pa. He was a former letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service.

Surviving in addition to his wife and parents are a daughter, Bailey Coop at home; and a sister, Edith Coop of Hanover, Pa.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, where services will begin at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Jeff Watson officiating.

Interment will take place in Marburg Memorial Gardens, Hanover, Pa.

Mr. Meredith (Bud) Cook

Mr. Meredith (Bud) Dorsey Cook, 84, of Hampstead, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2008, at the Baltimore V.A. Medical Center in Baltimore.

Born Jan. 25, 1924, in Frederick, he was the son of the late Dorsey Granville and Carrie Elizabeth Kramer Cook. He was the husband of Mabel Elizabeth Bussard Cook, his wife of 61 years.

He was retired from American Standard. He was a veteran of the United States Army.

Surviving in addition to his wife, are daughters and sons-in-law: Katherine Hungerford and Eddie of Keedysville; Diane Dziemburski and Jack of Dundalk; Joyce McCarty and Dennis of Dundalk. Sons and daughters-in-law: Larry Cook and Linda of Ocean City; David Cook and Pam of Monrovia; and Thomas Cook of Hampstead. Sisters: Marie Bates and husband, Eddie, and Betty Jane Nichols and husband, Johnny. Brothers: Millard Cook and wife, Ann, and Melvin Cook and wife, Shirley. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by siblings Frances Cook, Ruth Burns, Mabel Shankle, Ruby Tomczewski and Richard Cook.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 20, at the Eckhardt Funeral Chapel, P.A., 3296 Charmil Drive, Manchester. Interment will be in Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick.

The family will receive friends fom 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral chapel.
