Mrs. Donaldine Gelwicks

Donaldine Elizabeth Gelwicks, 94, of Emmitsburg, died Monday, Dec. 29, 2008, at Gettysburg Hospital, Gettysburg, Pa.

Born Nov. 17, 1914, in New Windsor, she was the daughter of the late Carroll and Marguerite (Taylor) Hann. She was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Earle Robert Gelwicks on Jan. 13, 1991.

She was communicant of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Emmitsburg. She loved to play cards, enjoyed TV, sports, baking, cooking and most of all spend time with her family.

She is survived by children, Mary Anne Bollinger-Baker and husband, Charles, of Finksburg, John M. Gelwicks of Emmitsburg, Joseph E. Gelwicks and wife, Sandra, of Emmitsburg, Mark A. Gelwicks and wife, Melissa, of Emmitsburg, Margaret M. Ridenour and husband, Jerry, of Emmitsburg, Joan F. Elower and husband, Donald, of Emmitsburg, and James A. Gelwicks and wife, Teresa, of Fairfield, Pa.; sister-in-law, Cathi Gelwicks of Quakertown, Pa.; brother, Richard Hann of Hagerstown; sisters, Mary L. Dennison of Annapolis, and Helen Vaughan of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

Also surviving are 32 grandchildren and 58 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son, Robert C. Gelwicks; daughter, Donaldine Singley; and a brother, Eugene Hann.

A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 2, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 47 DePaul St., Emmitsburg. Rev. Paul M. Murphy, C.M. will be celebrant.

Interment will follow in the New St. Joseph's Catholic cemetery in Emmitsburg.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 1, at the Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 210 W. Main St., Emmitsburg. Rosary prayers will be said at 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 1, at the funeral home.

Mrs. June Watkins

June Beverly Watkins, 72, of Winchester, Va., died Sunday, Dec. 28, 2008, at the Winchester Medical Center.

She was born May 16, 1936, in Winchester, the daughter of Daniel L. and Ruth Boyd Miller. She married William F. Watkins on Sept. 18, 1981, in Frederick. He preceded her in death on Jan. 30, 2007.

She is survived by two sons, Russell Oates Jr. of Martinsburg, W.Va., and David Oates of West Virginia; one daughter, Cynthia S. Barbee of Purcellville, Va.; four sisters, Mercedes Crisman of Winchester, Eleanora Layman of Middletown, Va., Carol Cave of Winchester, W.Va., and Gail Johnson of High View, W.Va.; two brothers, Meredith Boyd of North Carolina and Daniel L. Miller III of Boyce, Va.; four step-children; three grandchildren, including Heather Keyser; and one great-grandchild.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 2, at Jones Funeral Home Chapel, Winchester. Rev. Ann Hough will officiate. Burial will be private.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral service, from 10 to 11 a.m., at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Grace United Methodist Church, 7882 Main St., Middletown, VA 22645.

Mr. Quentin Aanenson

Quentin C. Aanenson, of Bethesda, died Sunday, Dec. 28, 2008. He was the beloved husband of Jacqueline G. Aanenson.

Quentin is survived by his children, Vicki J. Murphy, Jerry L. Aanenson, and Debra D. Pyers; brother, Curtis Aanenson and Mavis Porter; and grandchildren, Derek, Kyle and Ryan Curtis Murphy, Shanna and Brett Pyers, Trent, Hunter and Lindsay Aanenson, and Troy Muller. He was the father-in-law of Harry T. Murphy, Thomas L. Pyers and Julia C. Aanenson.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 2, at Joseph Gawler's Sons, Inc., 5130 Wisconsin Ave., N.W., at Harrison Street.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, at Concord St. Andrew's United Methodist Church, 5910 Goldsboro Road, Bethesda.

Full honors will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27, at Arlington National cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Montgomery Hospice, 1355 Piccard Drive, Suite 100, Rockville, MD 20850.

Mrs. Doris Mills

Doris Virginia (Biser) Mills, of Frederick, passed away Monday, Dec. 29, 2008, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. Born April, 16, 1932, in Frederick, she was the daughter of Irving M. and Virginia L. Biser of Frederick.

Doris was a member of the Frederick High School, Class of 1951. In her adulthood she worked in several local factories, until her most notable employment at Hood College, where she retired in 1997 after 20 years of service.

Special enjoyment in life was her family, especially her grandchildren. She loved them dearly and was proud of all their accomplishments.

Doris is survived by her son, David Mills and wife, Cindy, of Frederick. She was the grandmother of three, Stefanie Harris and husband, Stephen, of Frederick, Laura Mills, and Thomas Mills, both of Frederick. She is also survived by her sister, Betty L. Rosencrantz of Frederick and her nieces and nephews, Sarah Wills and her husband, Joseph, Faith Humerick and her husband, David, and Bayard Rosencrantz and his wife, Laura. Doris is also survived by numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. Finally, she will me missed by her special friend, Janice Larkin.

Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31, in the Etchison Memorial Chapel at the funeral home. Rev. Kenneth R. Dunnington will officiate.

Interment will follow in the Christ Reformed United Church of Christ cemetery, Middletown.

Mr. Roger Smith

Roger C. Smith, 45, of Cascade, passed away Sunday, Dec. 28, 2008, at his home after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born May 26, 1963, in Hagerstown, he was the son of Bessie Cosgrove Smith of Sabillasville, and the late Roger H. Smith.

He is survived by his wife of six years, Angela Marie (Everett) Smith, whom he married Sept. 22, 2002.

He was a 1981 graduate of Catoctin High School, Thurmont.

Roger worked in his early years with McDonald's of Thurmont and Rice Tire of Frederick. He worked for RR Donnelly, formerly known as Moore Business Forms, for 23 years, before being stricken with cancer.

He was a member of Woodsboro Volunteer Fire Company, New Midway Volunteer Fire Company, Blue Ridge Summit Volunteer Fire Company and was a well-known member of American Legion Post 282.

In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by sons, Brandon MJ Smith and wife, Toni, of Smithsburg, and Patrick D. Woodby of Emmitsburg; stepdaughters, Jacklyn Eastep Smith and Stephanie Eastep both of Cascade, and Jennifer L. Cool and fianc?, Gary Glass, of Emmitsburg; stepson Steven W. Horman and wife, Sarah, of Keymar; sisters Brenda Smith of Sabillasville and Janet Yount of Walkersville; two grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; five nieces; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Margo and Donald Everett of Keymar; and brother-in-law, Donald Everett and wife, Allison, of Bremerton, Wash.

He was preceded in death by brother-in-law Peter Yount.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 1, from the Woodsboro Volunteer Fire Company Activities Complex, 10307 Coppermine Road, Woodsboro. Rev. Barry L. Taylor and Deacon Charles Barnhart will officiate. Burial will be in Bethel cemetery, Cascade.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, at the J.L. Davis Funeral Home in Smithsburg and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31, at the Woodsboro Volunteer Fire Company Activities Complex with a firemen's memorial given at 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Woodsboro Volunteer Fire Company, 2 S. Third St., Woodsboro, MD 21798 or the American Cancer Society, 1037 Haven Road, Hagerstown, MD 21742.

Mrs. Johanna Wolfe

Mrs. Johanna Wolfe (Nan), 93, of Taney Village, Frederick, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2009.

She was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and emigrated to Wall Township, N.J., where she married Edward Wolfe. They retired to Ocala, Fla. After her husband's death, she moved to Frederick.

Johanna was a member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Frederick. She loved playing bingo, reading and enjoyed spending time with family and her friends at Taney Village and the Senior Center.

She is survived by her children, sons, Ronald Lyons and wife, Roberta, of Frederick, David Lyons and wife, Maria, of Mineola, N.Y., Benjamin Witmer and wife, Sharon, of Sunbury, Pa.; daughters, Catherine Lebo and husband, Roger, of Herndon, Pa., Carolyn Rebuck of Lock Haven, Pa., and Margaret Jobes of Gastonia, N.C.; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Gordon Lyons.

There will be no funeral services or visitation. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family at Monmouth Park, N.J.

Memorials in her name may be made to your local Cancer Society or the American Diabetes Association.

Mr. Wilson Clay

Mr. Wilson E. Clay, 83, of Thurmont, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2009, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of the late Mary F. Clay.

Born in Montgomery County on July 20, 1925, he was the son of the late Wilson Carroll and Edna King Clay.

Mr. Clay was a lifelong farmer and spent much of his time running his fruit and vegetable market in Thurmont. He enjoyed his time spent with his family and helping out neighbors and friends. He was a member of the Thurmont United Methodist Church.

The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff at Frederick Memorial Hospital ICU for their care and kindness.

Surviving are three children, Carolyn Jacobs and husband, Elmer, of Damascus, Mickey Clay and companion, Pat Keller, of Damascus and Gary Clay of Olney; grandchildren, Kenny Jacobs and friend, Cindy, Randall Jacobs and wife, Brenda, Tom Jacobs and wife, Suzi, Matthew Clay and wife, Kim, Kevin Jacobs and friend, Karen, Kim Askew and husband, Jason, and Darren Keller; great-grandchildren, Brandon, Jessica, Rebecca, Cheyenne, Austin, Savannah, Jonathan, Brandon, Tara and Casslyn; brothers, Calvin Clay and wife, Anna, and John Clay; sisters, Sally Johnson and husband, Wade, and Jenny Lamm and husband, Chuck; and sister-in-law, Mary Clay. Mr. Clay was preceded in death by one brother, Marvin Clay.

Family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30, at the Stauffer Funeral Home, P.A., 104 E. Main St., Thurmont. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, at the Thurmont United Methodist Church, 13880 Long Road, Thurmont, MD 21788. The Rev. Gary Morgan will officiate.

Interment will follow in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Thurmont United Methodist Church at the above address.

Mr. Albert Lowe

Mr. Albert C. Lowe, 71, of Upper Fairmount, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2009, at his home.

Born March 24, 1937, in Germantown, he was a son of the late Louis E. Lowe and Louise Barnhouse Lowe.

Albert had worked as a plumber for the State of Maryland Park and Planning Commission. He liked to trap and also worked with his son-in-law, Bill Miller. Every year in the fall, Albert and his wife would drive to Butler's Orchard, where they would stay with family members, while he drove tractors for hay rides and she worked the fruit stand.

He is survived by his wife, Vera Jean Howard Lowe of Upper Fairmount; three children, Albert Eugene Lowe and companion, Sally Tobery, of Sykesville, Lark Jean Miller and husband, Bill, of Princess Anne, and Roseanna Reed and fianc?, Michael Trickler, of Williamsport; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brothers, Steve Eugene Lowe and Richard Lowe, both of Princess Anne, and Stoney Lee Lowe of West Virginia; and several nieces and nephews.

A sister, Janet Lowe; and a brother, Sonny Lowe preceded him in death.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, at Hinman Funeral Home in Princess Anne, where friends may call one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Nolan Ford will be officiating. Interment will be held in Beechwood cemetery in Princess Anne.

Mr. Robert Byrd Jr.

Mr. Robert LeRoy Byrd Jr., 87, of 9940 Premiere View Circle, Hagerstown, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2009, at Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown.

Born Sunday, Dec. 18, 1921, in Manassas, Va., he was the son of the late Robert L. Byrd Sr. and the late Ethel Maddox Byrd. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy L. Byrd, in 2000.

He was employed as manager of Southern States in Manassas, Va., retiring after 38 years of service. He was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Manassas, Va., and also the Trinity United Methodist Church in Frederick. Robert served on the City of Manassas,Va., Town Council for 22 years, and was also past president of the Lions Club of Manassas.

While residing in Frederick, he volunteered at Daybreak and was heavily involved in the Frederick Senior Center.

He is survived by his daughter, Patricia R. Young of Hagerstown; his son, Robert L. Byrd III of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; three grandchildren, Robert Christopher Byrd of Chicago, Ill., Jeffrey Alan Byrd of Altadena, Calif., and Stephen Douglas Byrd of Vero Beach, Fla.; five step-grandchildren; and many friends who loved him.

He was preceded in death by brothers, George Byrd and Proctor Byrd.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd., North, Hagerstown, with David Reed officiating.

Family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 31.

Interment will be in the Manassas cemetery, Manassas, Va., at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31.

Mr. Gary L. Moore

Mr. Gary L. Moore, Commander, U.S. Navy, Ret., 72, of Frederick, highly decorated naval aviator, died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2009, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Margaret B. Moore, his wife of 61Ú2 years.

Born March 14, 1936, in Crescent, Calif., he was the son of the late Lorin A. and Rachel Bosch Moore. Gary graduated from the University of California in 1959 with a bachelor of arts in mathematics. In April of 1959, he joined the Navy Aviation Officers Candidate Program, was commissioned as ensign in August 1959, and designated a naval aviator in February 1961, and was deployed with the USS Midway. He later served as an instructor pilot in Attack Squadron 125 and next was assigned to the USAF Aerospace Research Pilot School at Edwards AFB in California, graduating in 1965, having flown most of the USAF century series fighter aircraft. During the Vietnam War, Gary was assigned to the USS Kitty Hawk and later the USS Independence. In 1977 he was named executive officer of Fighter Squadron 41. During his naval career, which spanned from 1959 to 1982, he was awarded five Air Medals and the Navy Commendation Medal; other awards include Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation, Vietnam Campaign Ribbon, Vietnam Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, and Expert Pistol Shot Medal. Gary enjoyed gardening, woodworking, cooking, reading, classical music and loved solving math problems.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Kimberly Reavis and husband, Randy; four grandchildren, Sara Sparr, Allysa, Dereck and Megan Moore, all of Colorado; two great-grandchildren, Sutton and Ella; three brothers, Ronald, Richard and Kenneth Moore; a sister, Patricia Powell; a stepson, John Parker and wife, Darlene, of Felton, Del.; a stepdaughter, Martha Cossey and husband, Mark, of Merrimack, N.H.; stepgrandchildren, Zack, Faith and Cara Parker, and Will and Jordan Cossey. Mr. Moore was preceded in death by a son, Erick Moore.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, where a memorial service will begin at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Barbara Daniel of Evangelical Reformed United Church of Christ, Frederick, officiating.

Interment will occur at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Heart Association, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, VA 23058.
