A. Augustus Stewart Jr.
CATONSVILLE - A. Augustus "Gus" Stewart Jr. of Catonsville died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 1997 at Charles Town Care Center, Catonsville. He was 90.
Born in Cambridge on Oct. 24, 1907, he was the son of the late Alfred Augustus and Sena Willey Stewart.
He was raised in Cambridge and graduated from Cambridge High School. He then attended Goldey Beacom Business College in Wilmington, Del. and was a graduate of Stonier Graduate School of Banking, Rutgers University. In 1929 he went to work at the National Bank of Cambridge and later served as Assistant Cashier. In 1942 he accepted a position at the Baltimore Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond. In 1951 he was named Assistant Cashier, 1952 Cashier, and in 1969 was promoted to Vice President of the Branch. In January of 1973 he retired after 30 years of service. He received a citation signed by Fred Vinson, Secretary of the U.S. Treasury Department for his patriotic efforts rendered in behalf of World War II finance programs. In addition to his duties at the Federal Reserve he also served on the Board of Trustees of Maryland General Hospital and as a Trustee on the Pension Funds, Inc. of the Baltimore Conference, United Methodist Church.
He was a member of Catonsville United Methodist Church, where over the years he served as Treasurer, Chairman of the Administrative Board, and President of the Board of Trustees. He was a member and Past Master of Cambridge Lodge 66 A.F. & A.M. and was a Past President of the Catonsville Rotary Club and the Catonsville Concert Association.
He married
the former Frances Ann Matthews on Nov. 28, 1936.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Judith Stewart Gehrman of Catonsville and Augusta Stewart Sharkazy of Columbia, Md.; one grandson; and one granddaughter.
Graveside services and a Masonic Memorial Service, with officers and members of Cambridge Masonic Lodge, was held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 6 at Green Lawn cemetery.

James E. Whitby
MAGNOLIA, Del. - James E. Whitby of Magnolia, Del., died Thursday, Dec. 4, 1997 at Kent General Hospital. He was 47.
He was a security guard and a musician. He was a U.S. Army veteran.
Mr. Whitby is survived by his wife of 11 years, Sandra Whitby; his father and stepmother, James M. and Mary Catherine Whitby of Queenstown; three daughters, Cynthia Whitby and Tuesday Whitby, both of Magnolia, Del., and Annabelle Crowl of Airville, Pa.; two sons, Jason Whitby and Richard Whitby, both of Magnolia, Del.; three sisters, Bonnie Wheeler and Darlene Dashiell, both of Easton, and Tammy Horne of Bridgeville, Del.; and his paternal grandmother, Margaret Whitby of Easton.
His mother, Anna Mae Hull, is deceased.
Services were held at 1 p.m., Monday, Dec. 8 in the chapel of Berry-Short Funeral Home, Milford, Del.
Burial was in Hollywood cemetery, Harrington, Del.
Charles R. Geesey
TAYLORS ISLAND - Charles Russell Geesey Sr. of Taylors Island died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 1997 at Fort Howard Veterans Hospital, Edgemere. He was 72.
Born on Feb. 25, 1925 in York, Pa., he was the son of the late Russell Geesey and Ruth Swift Geesey.
On May 2, 1950 he married
the former Mary McCarty.
Mr. Geesey was a U.S. Army World War II veteran. He worked for York International Manufacturing Co. as a welding inspector. Following retirement, he made his home at Taylors Island.
In addition to his wife of 47 years; he is survived by three daughters, Linda Hall of York, Pa., Dianne Warner of Taylors Island and Charlene Ruppert of York, Pa.; three sisters, Donna Whitecamp of Manchester, Pa., Jean Gillespie of Dallastown, Pa. and Beatie Hummer of York, Pa.; two brothers, Harry Gross of Taylors Island and Tommy Gross of Spring Grove, Pa.; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A son, Charles R. Geesey Jr., is deceased.
Funeral and committal service was held on Monday, Dec. 8 at 1 p.m. at The Maryland Veterans cemetery
Chapel, in Hurlock.

Virginia L. Hurley
EAST NEW MARKET - Virginia L. Hurley died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 1997 at the Memorial Hospital, Easton. She was 74.
Born on Jan. 19, 1923 in Elliott Island she was the daughter of the late Reginald McKenzie Ewell and Willie Catherine Insley Ewell.
After raising her children she worked at Clayton's Crab House as a picker and then later worked at Airpax Plant No. 2 in the furnace room until her retirement. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in East New Market where she was a member of Martha Circle, Fork District Senior Homemakers Club, attended MAC in Secretary and a member of AARP.
She is survived by two sons, Willey W. Hurley III of Preston and Gilbert J. Hurley of East New Market; two daughters, Faye Dodson of Cambridge and Wendy Simmons of East New Market; two granddaughters; and a brother, Joseph Ewell of Cambridge.
Services were held on Saturday, Dec. 6 at 1 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church.
Burial was Saturday, Dec. 6, following the service, at East New Market cemetery.

Josefa M. Schlag
WITTMAN - Josefa Maria Schlag of Wittman died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 1997 at her home. She was 82.
Born in Beverbruch, Germany on July 27, 1915, she was the daughter of Josef Johann Luken and Anna Schlomer Luken.
She owned and operated the Schlag Gladiolus Farm in Wittman until she retired in 1981.
Her husband, Adolfe Schlag, is deceased.
Mrs. Schlag is survived by a son, Gustav A. Schlag of Wittman; two daughters, Hilda M. Linz of Denton and Susan A. Townsend of Easton; 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial was said at 4 p.m., Friday, Dec. 5 at St. Michaels Catholic Chapel.
Burial was at 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 6 at Oak Lawn cemetery, Baltimore.
Nathaniel Brown
OXFORD - Nathaniel Brown died Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 27, 1997 at his home at 105 Tilghman St., Oxford. He was 88.
Born Aug. 6, 1909, he had been a quartermaster in the U.S. Army until his honorable discharge in 1949. Later he had worked as a truck driver and self-employed mason.
Mr. Brown was a member of Waters United Methodist Church in Oxford.
A memorial service was held at the church at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 8. Burial will be at the Eastern Shore of Maryland Veterans cemetery
at a later date.
Arrangements are by the Dashiell Funeral Service, Easton.
Gwendolyn S. Collier
EASTON - Gwendolyn S. Collier of Easton died Friday, December 5, 1997, at William Hill Manor. She was 80.
Born May 18, 1917, at Cordova, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Sylvester and Nora Jackson Sewell.
She was a 1933 graduate of Easton High School and was employed for several local businesses. In 1950 she moved to California. She was employed as a secretary with Koppers Company Incorporated. In 1972, moved to Salisbury and continued employment with the company. She retired in 1982 and in November 1994, moved to Easton.
Mrs. Collier is survived by two nephews, Jackson C. Sewell Jr. of Palm City, Fla. and Thomas B. Sewell of Crofton, Md. A brother, Jackson C. Sewell died Jan. 26, 1991.
Memorial services were held at 3 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 9, at William Hill Manor, Easton. Burial was private at Spring Hill cemetery.

Althea R. Ford
FAIRFAX, Va. - Althea Riley Ford, formerly of Royal Oak and Sacramento, Calif., died Thursday Dec. 4, 1997 at Fairfax Hospital. She was 82.
Mrs. Ford is survived by two children, F. Carson Riley of Preston and Margaret Loving of Marshall, Va.; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 13 at Woodlawn Memorial Park, Easton.
