Bert H. Griffioen
BOWIE - Bert Hendrick "Hank" Griffioen, formerly of Easton, died in a plane crash on Sunday, May 17, 1998. He was 32.
Born in Easton on July 27, 1965, he was the son of Bert and Ilse Stach Griffioen. After graduating from Easton High School in 1983 he attended Salisbury State University, receiving a degree in computer science in 1988. He completed an internship as a computer technician at Horn Point Environmental Laboratories with Dr. Bill Boycourt. He began his career in February 1989 as a contract employee in computer science for NASA's Climate Data System and later for the Distributed Active Archive Center at Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt. He was highly respected for his creativity and productivity.
In January 1998, he started a new position as a database specialist for Wellspring Resources, a human resources company, in Bethesda. His interest in aviation led him to become an instrument and multi-engine rated flight instructor.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Griffioen is survived by one brother, Eric Griffioen; his wife, Mari, of Easton; a niece, Mina Griffioen; and cousins, aunts and uncles in Germany and Holland.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 22 at the Talbot Bible Church, Easton. Burial was at Oxford cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Talbot Bible Church Building Fund, 9114 Chapel Road, Easton, MD 21601.
Funeral arrangements are by the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton.
Expressions of sympathy may be mailed to Bert and Ilse Griffioen, 29407 Stoney Ridge Circle, Easton, Md. 21601.

Paul R. Lawrence
SALISBURY - Paul R. Lawrence of Salisbury, formerly of Cordova, died Tuesday, May 19, 1998 at the Salisbury Center. He was 87.
Born in Pennsylvania on May 27, 1910, he was the son of the late George Richard and Amanda Kline Lawrence. As a young man he moved with his family to Cordova where he graduated from Cordova High School.
One of the 13 original Volkswagen dealers on the Eastern seaboard, he operated Lawrence Service Center Inc. in Wye Mills from 1954-1967. At that time he moved to Centreville, where he raised broilers for Bayshore Foods Inc. In 1977 he moved to the Cordova area and then to the Salisbury Center in June 1996.
He was active in the Rotary International for many years, he served in several leadership capacities and on several committees and was a Paul Harris Fellow. For 68 years he was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Cordova, where he had served as council president and vice-president and in various committee chairmanships.
His wife, the former Marie Behrens, died on June 1, 1996.
Mr. Lawrence is survived by one son, Robert M. Lawrence of Salisbury; one daughter, Sharon L. Jacobs of Kingsport, Tenn.; one brother, Robert B. Lawrence of Melbourne, Fla.; one half-sister, Libby Creager of Milford, N.J.; five grandchildren, Richie Lewis of Newark, Dixie Pinette and Robert Lawrence Jr., both of Salisbury, Caitlin and Christine Jacobs, both of Kingsport, Tenn.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 22 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Cordova.
Burial was in St. Paul's Church cemetery, Cordova.
Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Paul's Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 12095 Blades Road, P.O. Box 368, Cordova, Md. 21625.

William Lockerman
DENTON - William "Billy Ray" Lockerman of Denton died Tuesday, May 19, 1998 in Dover, Del. as the result of injuries in a truck accident. He was 59.
Born in Easton, he was the son of Anna Elmira Stevens Lockerman of Denton and the late William Thomas Lockerman.
He had lived in Denton all of his life and was a self-employed certified welder and truck driver. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran.
In addition to his mother he is survived by one son, W. Lance Lockerman of Denton; one daughter, Kerry Cooney of Denton; one brother, T. Alan Lockerman of Denton; and three grandchildren.
One brother, Wendell Lockerman, is deceased.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 23 at the Moore Funeral Home, Denton. Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
Burial will be private.

William H. Skinner
RIDGELY - William Henry Skinner of Ridgely died Saturday, May 16, 1998 at the Memorial Hospital at Easton. He was 79.
Born in Talbot County he was the son of the late Roy Skinner and Helen Logan.
He was a farm laborer most of his life and attended Scott's U.M. Church, Trappe.
He is survived by one sister, Eva White of Trappe; and one brother, Roy Skinner of Easton.
Services were held at noon on Friday, May 22 at the Bennie Smith Funeral Home, Easton.

Paul R. Stone Sr.
LANCASTER, Pa. - Paul Roger Stone Sr. of Lancaster, Pa., formerly of Royal Oak, died Friday, May 15, 1998 at Manorcare Health Center in Lancaster from complications of Alzheimer's Disease. He was 80.
Born in Washington, D.C. on Nov. 11, 1917, he was the son of Eugene Roger and Louise Shea Stone.
He attended schools in Washington, D.C., graduating from Georgetown University in 1941 with a degree in chemical engineering. In 1948, he married the former Donna Moser, who died on June 19, 1992.
He was employed as a materials engineer for the U.S. Naval Air Systems Command in Washington, D.C., retiring in 1973 after 32 years with the Navy Department. At that time, he and his wife moved from Bethesda to Royal Oak.
He was a member of the Royal Oak Community United Methodist Church, the Edge Creek Boat Club, Izaak Walton League, and was a volunteer for the Red Cross.
Mr. Stone is survived by two daughters, Louise Brewer of Lancaster and Irene Smith of Oxford; a son, Paul Roger Stone Jr. of Royal Oak; and nine grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at the Royal Oak Community United Methodist Church on Saturday, June 20 at 1 p.m.
Memorial donations may be made to the Royal Oak Community United Methodist Church, Royal Oak, Md. 21662 or to the Alzheimer's Association.

Joyce R. Turner
ROCK HALL - Joyce Richella Turner Landman of Bellevue, Rock Hall, died Sunday, May 17, 1998 at her home. She was 58.
Born March 15, 1939 in Bellevue, she was the daughter of Howard Otis Turner of Bellevue and the late Harriett Louise Jackson Turner.
She was a graduate from Moton High School and attended Morgan State University, Baltimore.
She was employed by the state of Maryland's Comptroller of the Treasury for 14 years. She was an active and lifetime member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church, Bellevue. She also attended Refuge Temple Church of God in Cambridge.
In addition to her father, she is survived by one son, Alex A. Green of Bellevue; two daughters, Harriett L. Ennels of Cambridge and Anita L. Gibson of Easton; six brothers, Gerald O. Turner of Bellevue, Maurice S. Turner of Lothina, Ga., Gene C. Turner of Upper Marlboro, Holbert H. Turner of Royal Oak, Ronald C. Turner of Easton and Warren P. Turner of Atlanta, Ga.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 22 at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, Bellevue.
Burial was in Maryland Veterans cemetery of the Eastern Shore, Beulah.
Arrangements are by Bennie Smith Funeral Home, Easton.

Nancy O. Whitley
BALTIMORE - Nancy O'Neil Whitley of Baltimore died Saturday, May 16, 1998 of cancer. She was 66.
Born in North Carolina, she attended Duke University before completing her M.D. degree in 1957 at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, N.C. She was married to Dr. Joseph E. Whitley in 1959.
Dr. Whitley was the first woman industrial physician for Western Electric before returning to Bowman Gray to complete a residency in diagnostic radiology in 1969. She became the first female chief resident at the school and joined the faculty as associate professor in 1974. After moving to Baltimore with her husband in 1978, she became professor of diagnostic radiology and oncology at University of Maryland where she was recognized as an authority on the use of CAT (Computer Assisted Tomography) scan imagers, particularly with cancer patients. She retired from Maryland and ended her career in 1994 after serving as adjunct professor of diagnostic radiology at the Medical University of South Carolina at Charleston.
During her career in academic radiology, she co-authored over 60 medical journal articles, six book chapters, and one radiology textbook. In recognition of her work, she received two Gold Medals, one from the Association of University Radiologists in 1994 and the other from the American Roentgen Ray Society in 1998.
In addition to her accomplishments in the field of medicine, Dr. Whitley was a skilled photographer and particularly loved taking black and white still-life photographs of the Eastern Shore where she had a home. She attended photography classes at the Maryland Institute of Art.
Dr. Whitley is survived by her son, John O'Neil Whitley, her daughter Catherine Anne Whitley, Ph.D., her sister, Patricia O'Neil Goodyear, and four grandchildren. Her husband, Dr. Joseph Whitley, is deceased.
A private memorial service was held by the family on Thursday, May 21. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, 162 Prince George St., Annapolis, Md., 21401.
