Walter Phillips, 44

KITTERY - Walter "Lee" Phillips, 44, of Ledgewood Drive in Kittery, died on Feb. 12, 2004 at New England Medical Center in Boston after a long and hard-fought battle with heart disease.

Born on Feb. 10, 1960 in Birmingham Ala., he was a son of the late Victor Raymond Phillips Jr. and Shirley Ann (Peek) Phillips, graduated from Elba High School in Elba, Ala., and furthered his education at the New Hampshire Technical College in Nashua, N.H. He lived in many parts of the United States with his family. They settled in the seacoast area six years ago and in Kittery two-and-a-half years ago, where he and his loving wife of 17 years Michelle (Tatro) Phillips, have made their home and raised their family.

He was a proud member of the United States Navy, serving his country in a number of capacities including radioman and in the elite Navy Seals. He served aboard, among many the USS Clark and the USS George Bankroft.

He was trained and worked as an electrical mechanical engineer and also worked in the paramedic field for Seacoast Ambulance when it was based in Stratham. He also worked for Georgia Power.

He enjoyed sports especially the Atlanta Braves and college football. Most recently he enjoyed his new-found talent as an artist, finding enjoyment drawing and painting.

His first love was his family. This was evident by the love they shared.

He is survived by his loving wife Michelle of Kittery; one daughter Andrea L. Phillips of Kittery and sons Michael J. Phillips and David Tibbetts of Kittery and his mother Shirley Phillips of Mauldin, S.C.; two brothers, Victor R. Phillips III and his wife Janis of Simpsonville S.C., and Jay Paul Phillips of Concord, N.C.; one sister Dusty Decatur and in-laws John W. Tatro of Manchester, N.H. and Anne L. (Mcgonagle) Tatro of Nashua, N.H.; one brother-in-law David W. Tatro, his wife Cindy and their daughter Stacy Tatro of Allenstown, N.H.; as well as his aunts, uncles and cousins in the southern part of the United States.

Funeral services were held Monday at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, Kittery.

Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Inez Ricketts, 93

ELIOT - Inez Hope Ricketts, 93 of River Road in Eliot, died on Feb. 9, 2004 at the Harbor Home in York after a period of failing health.

Born in Everett, Mass. on April 27, 1903, she was a daughter of Lemual and Clara (Yates) Poole.

She met and married her husband of many years Frederick C. Ricketts Sr. Together they raised their family here in the seacoast.

Her strong faith in the Lord allowed her to be a strong and loving mother to her children and enjoy her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed membership in her church for many years, the church of the Nazarene, formerly of Eliot.

She enjoyed quiet time playing the piano, all types of handiwork including knitting, crocheting, and sewing,

She will be missed by those who knew and loved her including her loving family; five daughters, Ruby Fretz of North Providence, R.I., Gloria Blowers and her husband Eugene of Tennessee, Dolores and her husband Victor Buffey of Michigan, Rev. Sharon and her husband Rev. Samuel Morse of Farmington Falls, Maine, and Cheryl Ann Ricketts of Farmington Falls, Maine; one son Frederick (Chet) Ricketts and his wife Joyce of Eliot; one brother Albert Poole of Cape Cod, Mass.; numerous grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral was conducted Saturday by the Rev. Samuel Morse at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, Kittery.

Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Louise Stevenson (Audley), 61

KENNEBUNKPORT - Louise C. Stevenson, 61, of Lachute, Quebec, and formerly of Kennebunkport, succumbed to a long battle with cancer on Feb. 14, 2004.

She was born in Sainte-Sanne-de-Bellevue, Quebec, Canada on April 9, 1943, daughter of Robert and Colombe (Lariviere) Stevenson.

Her connection to Maine began with many summer vacations spent with her family to an eventual move to Kennebunkport in 1983. She was employed by Kennebunk Savings Bank and then the Kings Port Motor Inn until her move back to Quebec in 1991.

She strived to be an active member of the community in which she lived. In recent years she became an active member of her church, volunteering at the local hospital and assisting the less fortunate. Rock climbing and hiking were examples of her adventurous spirit while hobbies included knitting and dancing. She enjoyed the ocean and spending time with her friends. Most of all she enjoyed the company of her family.

Survivors include three children, John of Kennebunk, Christina of Marlborough, N.H., and Nicholas of Boston; two grandsons, Kai and Galloway also of Marlborough; one brother George Stevenson and Lillian Lupien of Lachute, Quebec, Canada; and several nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that memorial contributions be made in Louise's name to the Canadian Cancer Society, 5151 de l'Assomption Blvd., Montreal PQ, H1T-4A9.

Edwin Swett, 76

SARASOTA, Fla. - Edwin (Ed) Swett, 76, of Sarasota, Fla., died Feb. 11, 2004.

He was born in Dover, N.H., the son of Dorothy and Leon Swett. He came to Sarasota 30 years ago from North Berwick. He graduated from Hill Top High School in Somersworth, N.H. and also McIntosh College for Accounting.

He was a lobsterman in his early life, and served in the U.S. Army as sergeant during the war. He was city accountant for the city of Rochester, N.H., then went to work at Baxter Woolen Mill as comptroller. He also worked at G.E. in Somersworth. He was a real estate broker and owned his own business as Tee and Ed Real Estate Agency. He moved to North Berwick where he opened the Tee and Ed Restaurant and Rooming House at the Hurd Mansion. He also built several homes in North Berwick under the name of Swett & Letvynchick. He was a justice of the peace in New Hampshire. After he moved to Florida he managed Siesta Harbor, Runaway Bay, Lido Towers and the Promenade on Longboat Key.

He had many hobbies including playing golf, cribbage and bridge, reading, volunteering and carpenter work, dancing and lobstering. He loved life.

After retiring he worked tirelessly as a volunteer including cooking at Prospect House, the Food Bank, visited retirement homes, with Pets on Patrol, with his longtime pet Papillion. He volunteered for many, many other organizations and was very civic minded. He served on the board of directors at Lido Surf and Sand and presently serves on the board at Heritage Oaks.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Therese (Tee); three sons, David and his wife Judy, Michael, and Kevin; one daughter Tracey; one sister Barbara Simpson; grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and many friends and other family who will miss him very much. He attended St. Patrick's Catholic Church.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

Lucille Velevis, 88

KENNEBUNK - Lucille Velevis, 88, formerly of Hoboken, N.J. and Kennebunk, Maine died Feb. 12, 2004 in Stamford, Conn. She was the daughter of Wilbur and Anna (Vogt) Faist.

She was predeceased by her husband Joseph A. Velevis in 1994.

She is survived by one son Robert of North Andover, Mass.; one daughter Joanne Walsh of Stamford, Conn.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

In the spring, there will be a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Martha Church with graveside services at Hope Cemetery, Kennebunk. They will be announced at a later date.

Brenda Walsh, 63

KITTERY - Brenda Dorothy Walsh, 63, of Cutts Road formerly of Goodrich Street in Kittery died on Feb. 14, 2004 at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born in Newburyport, Mass. on March 10, 1940, she was a daughter of Arthur and Ruth (Adams) Wood.

At a young age she and her family moved from Newburyport to Portsmouth, N.H. where she grew up and attended school.

She had made her home for more than 27 years on Goodrich Street, where she and her husband Robert Walsh, whom she met and married in 1983, lived before moving to Cutts Road.

She enjoyed activities with the Klaxton Antique Auto Club of Dracut, Mass. She and her husband with their 1965 Cadillac would meet with other auto enthusiasts in Burlington, Mass. and travel to shows, museums and other day destinations.

Her first love was her family.

She is survived by her loving husband Robert Walsh of Kittery; her children, one son Richard Welch and his wife Kellie of Kittery and their children Emily, Zachary and Alexander; daughters Vicky Hussey and her husband Richard of Greenland and their children Corey, Scott and Laura, Wanda McGowan and her husband Ralph of Stratham and their children Christopher, Jonathan and Tucker, Jeanette (Jaye) Lauder of Hill, N.H. and her children Jeffry, Nicholas and Jessica, Patricia Small of Brewer and her children Sawyer, and Isaac and Jennifer Welch of Salem, N.H.; one sister Pearl and sister-in-law Shirley Rowe and family of Florida.

She was predeceased by her sisters Gertrude and Doris and brother John Wood.

A funeral was held Wednesday at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home 125 Old Post Rd., Kittery.

John Hartley, 58

KENNEBUNK - John Hartley, 58, died peacefully at his home in Mauii, Hawaii Jan. 27, 2004.

He was born in Boston, Mass., Sept. 28, 1945, a son of Priscilla Hartley Saunders and the late Francis Hartley Jr.

He was a 1963 graduate of St. Paul's School, Concord, N.H. and received his B.A. from Yale University in 1967. He later did graduate work at Boston University.

He was a writer of documentaries and a film producer. His friends recall that he was the first person to occupy the South End Restoration in Boston. He was an avid Red Sox fan throughout his life.

He is remembered as a beloved son, always kind and generous and unfailingly witty.

He is survived by his mother, Priscilla Hartley Saunders of Kennebunk; one brother Francis; as well as an extended family and many close friends.

A memorial service is planned for the spring.

Florence Cheverie, 88

ELIOT - Florence B. Cheverie, 88, of 64 Beech Rd., Baran Place in Eliot, died on Feb. 18, 2004 at York Hospital following a period of failing health.

Born on Dec. 24, 1915 in Malden Mass., she was a daughter of Herman and Beatrice (Deer) Sullivan and attended local schools graduating from Malden High School.

In the early 1950s she and her husband of many years Sherwood Cheverie, moved to Kittery where they made their home and raised their family.

She enjoyed sewing, reading and her family, watching her children, grandchildren and recently her great-grandchildren grow.

She is survived by her family; one son Philip and his wife Urilla Cheverie of Alfred; three daughters, Janice and her husband Henry Repetto of Alfred, Beverly Lang of Salem, Mass., and Donna Philbrick of Kittery; one sister Alice Milward of Dracut, Mass.; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband Sherwood Cheverie in 1985 and her brother Ernest Sullivan.

Funeral services were private.

Donations may be made in her memory to the York Hospital Home Health Care, 15 Hospital Dr., York, ME 03909.

Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, Kittery.

Diane Cormier, 49

KENNEBUNK - Diane E. Cormier, 49, of Kennebunk, died on Feb. 18, 2004 at York Hospital after a lengthy illness and courageous battle with breast cancer.

She was born on May 21, 1954 in Syracuse, N.Y., a daughter of Frank and Elizabeth (Cofano) DiCaprio.

She was married to Tom Cormier in Ludlow, Mass. on Valentine's Day in 1982.

She was first and foremost a dedicated mother and wife. She also enjoyed gardening, reading, sewing, knitting, cooking, and spending time at the beach.

She will always and forever be lovingly remembered by her husband Tom, of 22 years; her son Sean Thomas Cormier; and three daughters, Jenai Jacqueline Cormier, Danielle Marie Cormier, and Shayna Elizabeth Cormier. She is also fondly remembered by her father, Frank; one brother Frank DiCaprio Jr.; and one sister Sharon DeMaio.

She was predeceased by her mother.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Evelyn Daeris, 82

KENNEBUNKPORT - Evelyn E. Daeris, 82, of Mills Road, died Feb. 22, 2004 at Maine Medical Center, Portland.

Private services and burial took place at Annunciation Cemetery, Dover, N.H.

Glenn Davis, 72

ELIOT - Glenn M. Davis, 72, of Eliot, died on Feb. 16, 2004 at Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation in Portsmouth, where he had been a resident since 1993. He enjoyed each and every one of his caregivers and had a special place in his heart for the staff there.

Born in South Eliot on Aug. 6, 1931, he was a son of Malcom and Ethel R. (Cole) Davis, he was raised in the family home on Main Street in Eliot and attended the Laura V. Dame School also on Main Street. He graduated second honor essay of his Eliot High School Class and was editor of the yearbook staff. Through high school and the years following he worked for his father, the founder and owner of Davis Oil Service Inc.

He was a faithful member of the South Eliot Advent Christian Church and enjoyed many summers at the Alton Bay Christian Conference Center in Alton Bay, N.H.

His kind and gentle demeanor will be missed by his family and those he touched.

He is survived by his sister-in-law Rita Davis of Eliot and his nieces and nephews Charles Davis, Susan and her husband John Crothers, Michael Davis, Sandra Davis, Kent Davis and his wife Deanna, and Jed Davis.

He was predeceased by his brothers Warren Davis and Wayne I. Davis.

A funeral was held in his church the South Eliot Advent Christian Church on Pleasant Street in Eliot on Saturday.

Donations may be made in his memory to the South Eliot Advent Christian Church, C/O Pat Beal, 86 Pleasant St., Eliot, ME 03903 or a charity of one's choice.
