Richard Winkler, 53

STANDISH - Richard "Dick" Perkins Winkler of Standish, died on May 22, 2004 surrounded by his loving family, after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born on Nov. 1, 1950 in Salem, Mass.

He is survived by his wife Darlene Winkler.

He was a devoted father to two children, Hannah A. Winkler, and Richard T. "Toby" Winkler, by his former wife Gay Yule. He had four stepchildren, Benjamin, Joshua, Jaime, and Bryan Wallace.

He was a son of Richard and Elsie (Prim) Littlefield Winkler of Ogunquit. He is also survived by one sister, Anne and her husband Joe Beauchemin of Greenland, N.H.; and one sister, Tenley and her husband Jim O'Shaughnessy of Concord, Mass. He leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, and will be greatly missed.

After graduating Haverford School and Lehigh University ('75), he worked for Maine National Bank in the Ogunquit and Kezar Falls branches for several years. He became a commercial lender and headed Maine National's York County Commercial Group in the early 1990s. He left the banking industry briefly to run a lobster company and then returned to banking where he worked at Fleet and Maine Bank & Trust. He joined KeyBank in 1998 as a commercial lender and worked for them until March of this year.

He was highly regarded by his colleagues throughout his career. He was a mentor to many young bankers and always made time for others. He had a very loyal client base and was committed to helping many companies achieve financial success. He had a particular devotion to the fishing industry as well as the construction, manufacturing, and service industries. He served a long list of Southern Maine companies and was known for his fairness and his honest, straightforward advice. Both bank colleagues and clients will remember him for his ever present sense of humor and his relentless ability to overcome challenges.

He was passionate about life, and enjoyed sailing, collecting antiques and restoring an old farmhouse in Porter. Most recently, he and his friends restored a 1947 Indian Chief motorcycle; he then faced the challenge of learning to ride it. His friends and family cherish the time they spent with him and the opportunity to share his many passions.

He has been a dedicated sailor, fund-raiser and friend to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. He participated four years ago in the annual Leukemia Cup Regatta at the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club, raising money and sailing his boat Defiance, to benefit the society. He has participated each year since and has been an avid patient speaker at society events, telling his own personal story and helping to educate others about the seriousness of blood-related cancers. He never hesitated to talk with other patient survivors about his experience having myeloma, giving them courage and strength throughout their treatment process and after. When talking with him about his disease, he always maintained a positive attitude, focusing on day-to-day and the gift of each day.

He will truly be missed by his fellow sailors and his friends at the society. The fifth annual Leukemia Cup Regatta in Boothbay will be held this July and they will honor his memory sailing toward a cure.

A memorial celebration of his life was held Thursday, at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Westbrook.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Dick's memory may be made to: Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, 495 Old Connecticut Path, Suite 220, Framingham, MA 01701-4567. Richard P. Winkler.

Estes, 80, of 50 Chauncey Creek Rd. in Kittery Point, passed away June 25, 2004 at the Maine Veteran's Home in Scarborough. born in Kittery Point on July 16, 1923, he was the eldest son of Samuel Curtis and Alice (Langille) Estes. He lived his entire life as a resident of Kittery Point.

A decorated, distinguished Army veteran of World War II, he served in the European Campaign Theatre with the 35th Infantry Division. Wounded in battle in Germany, he spent several months in a hospital during recovery. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart and Bronze Star, along with other military campaign medals; as a veteran he was a member of the local VFW and the American Legion. He was also a member of Masonic Naval Lodge 184 of Kittery.

Upon returning home, he graduated from R.W. Traip Academy with the class of 1947. In 1948, he married his high school sweetheart, Edith M. Seward of Kittery Point. This past February they happily celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary, surrounded by the entire family.

As the proud father of five sons, he set an example for all of us regarding the importance of family and community. During the mid 1950s, he served as president of Mitchell School P.T.A. and he was instrumental in construction of a new access drive to the school, replacing an old one-lane road. For years people in the community fondly referred to this new drive as "Estes Boulevard." He was an active member of the Kittery Point Volunteer Fire Department ending his active service at the rank of lieutenant. For many years he remained on the inactive list with the department. He was also a member of the former Pepperrell Cove Water Ski Club in Kittery Point. Always ready at the microphone to welcome visitors to the annual Pepperrell Cove Water ski shows. "A ski show on the crystal blue waters of Pepperrell Cove" was one of his favorite sayings to the crowds of people watching. As an avid skier he was also well known throughout New England as a respected water ski tournament judge. From the mid 1960s and well into the 1980s, he was an active member and president of the R.W. Traip Academy Athletic Boosters Club. With five sons involved in many sports, this kept him very busy.

After completing high school and starting a family, he entered the Apprentice Program at the Kittery Naval Shipyard. With 35 years of dedicated service, he retired from his position of code 365 test director.

Having spent his entire life on the coast, he looked forward to his retirement by becoming a recreational lobster and fisherman. He had a boat built specifically for himself, to enjoy many hours pulling traps to supply his lobster feasts for family and friends. He was an avid flounder fisherman and he truly enjoyed his time at Brave Boat Harbor digging for his steamer clams. This part of his life was a true reflection of his youth. Always spending time with his family, a day trip or a couple of weeks vacation away was spent with pleasure for all. He enjoyed taking his wife to the former Rockingham Ballroom, dancing the night away to their favorite music of the '40s.

Two years ago having been diagnosed with the early stage of Alzheimer's, he and the family pulled together to address this disease. For the past year, he spent his remaining time at the Maine Veteran's Home in Scarborough. For he and the family we are thankful for the wonderful care and attention he received there. With his humor and friendliness, he developed a "second family" of staff and administration. At the home, he was affectionately known as "Chief," always ready to lend a hand, or give advice.

He is survived by his loving wife Edith of Kittery Point; his five sons and families, Stephen C. of Kittery Point, Dennis S. and his wife Linda of Kittery Point, their son and daughter-in-law Dennis S. Jr. and Karol of Boston, Glenn F. and his wife Jill, along with their son and daughter Timothy and Emily, all of Kittery, Scott E. and son Samuel of Farmington, N.H. and Kirk D. and his daughter Lauren of South Berwick; one brother and his wife, Lawrence and Barbara Estes of Kittery.

He was predeceased by his infant daughter Terry Lynn and his two sisters Phylis Ladrie and Norma Gerry.

He will be fondly remembered by his family and many, many friends.

A funeral will be held today at 11 a.m. at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home 125 Old Post Rd., Kittery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Maine Veteran's Home, 290 Route 1, Scarborough ME 04074.
