Agnes Sheldon

SOMERSWORTH, N.H. - Agnes Loretta Sheldon, 82, a resident of Tri City Road, Somersworth, N.H., formerly of Berwick, died July 12, 2004 at the Wentworth Douglass Hospital in Dover, N.H. after a long illness.

She was born in Brookfield Center, Conn. on Feb. 21, 1922, a daughter of William Francis and Agnes Camilla (McKenna) Hollace. She graduated from St. Mary's High School in Dover.

She was a homemaker for most of her life.

She enjoyed travel and spending time with her family.

She was predeceased by her brother William Hollace and her sister Eleanor Metivier.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Lester Sheldon of Somersworth, N.H.; two sons Lester J. Sheldon of Kittery, and Lawrence E. Sheldon of Denver, Colo.; one daughter, Doreen A. Rembert of Portland, Maine; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral Mass was held Wednesday at the Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, Berwick with the Rev. Hilary Cameron officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery, Berwick.

Dr. Albert Hunter

KENNEBUNK - Dr. Albert Lewis Hunter, 88, a resident of Huntington Common, formerly of Islesboro and Camden, died July 12, 2004 in Kennebunk.

He was born in Cumberland Mills on April 30, 1916, a son of Albert and Mary (Lyle Bryden) Hunter. He graduated from Westbrook High School, Colby College, and Hanneman Medical School in Philadelphia.

He was a pathologist and worked at hospitals in Camden, Rockland, Damariscotta and Lewiston.

A daughter, Sarah Lewis Hunter, his sister, Barbara Peters, and brother, Freeman, preceded him in death. He was an avid sailor, gardener, and beloved grandfather and great-grandfather, "Poppy."

He is survived by two daughters, Lorie Wyman and husband, Alan of Kennebunk and Lindley Silverman and husband, Jay of Tucson, Ariz.; two sons, John and wife Patricia of Winston-Salem, N.C. and Eric and wife Marjorie of Fort Fairfield; four grandchildren, Kendall Carlson and husband Stephen of Wilmette, Ill., Christopher Hunter and wife Anna of Chattanooga, Tenn., Catherine Hunter of San Francisco, Calif. and Emily Wyman of Houston, Texas; four great-granddaughters, Sarah and Gracie Carlson, Katie and Molly Hunter; and one sister, Margery Charleston of Waterville.

There will be no visiting hours. A memorial service will be held on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Grindle Point Lighthouse, Islesboro.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Alice L. Pendleton Library, PO Box 77, Islesboro, ME 04848.

Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.

Arthur Beal

GROTON, Mass. - Arthur Blackburn Beal, 80, a Groton, Mass. resident, retired U.S. Navy A.O.C. and World War II veteran, died peacefully on the Fourth of July, 2004 at Nashoba Valley Medical Center in Ayer with his daughters by his side. He was the husband of the late Isabel (Collier) Beal who died in 2004 after 57 years of marriage.

He was born in Millinocket on Sept. 13, 1923, the son of Dr. George Napoleon Beal and Agnes (Norton) Beal of Beals Island and the great-grandson of Tall Barney Beal, "Gentle Giant" and Maine folk hero of Beals Island. He graduated from Deland High School in Deland, Fla., where he was a member of the National Thespian Dramatic Honor Society. He subsequently entered the U.S. Navy, and at the age of 18 became aviation ordinance chief, one of the youngest officers to ever achieve this rank. He served on the USS Ranger (C-4), a World War II aircraft carrier and infamous "ghost ship" that sank five German ships after Axis U-Boat commander Otto von Bulow believed he had "sunk" her in 1943.

After retiring from the Navy in 1961, the Beal family moved to the Floyd family homestead on Barralock Hill Farm, where he opened Beal's Radiator Shop. He had many diverse hobbies, including computing, sailing, winemaking, beekeeping, collecting and restoring antique cars, and photography. He was an avid ham radio enthusiast, broadcasting internationally as operator WBIGCE and holding the handle "Wet Bottom." He was a member of the USS Ranger (CV-4) Reunion Group, the Navy Amateur Radio Club, the Beals Historical Society, the Groton Historical Society, the Maine Sea Coast Missionary Society, and was a friend of the Union Congregational Church of Groton.

He was well known as a great storyteller with unique timing and a wry choice of words. He held a distinction for being unconventional, including piercing his own ear and displaying a diamond earring, a naval tradition for crossing the equator aboard ship. He was proud of his military service, and often marched in the Veteran's Day parade through Groton. He also had a notable appetite for Maine lobster, a habit frequently satisfied by his son-in-law lobsterman.

He is survived by two daughters, Marcia Beal Brazer and her husband Norman Jr. of Ogunquit, and Deborah Beal Normandin and her husband Eugene of Lunenburg; one sister, Ella Hyde of South Royalton, Vt.; two grandchildren, Sarah Brazer Campbell and her husband Chad of Lanai, Hawaii, and Dr. William Fletcher Brazer and his wife Sara Melissa of New Milford, Conn.; three great-grandchildren, Isabel Ke'alohilani Campbell and Lauren Ki'linahc Campbell of Lani, Hawaii, and Jack Benjamin Brazer of New Milford, Conn.; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held Saturday at the Union Congregational Church, Main Street, Groton.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Beals Historical Society, PO Box 280, Beals Island, ME 04611, or to the Sea Coast Mission, 127 West St., Bar Harbor, ME 04609.

Burial was at the Groton cemetery.

Arrangements are made by Badger's Funeral Home in Groton, Mass.

Benjamin Burr Jr.

GEORGETOWN, Maine - Benjamin Munroe Burr Jr., 51, an artist, historian and active member of AA, who helped many recovering alcoholics, died, July 7, 2004 in Brunswick.

Battling pancreatic cancer, he died peacefully with his family by his side in a Brunswick hospital.

A multi-faceted artist, he was a painter of landscapes and historical architecture. He was also an accomplished blues guitarist and writer of local and family histories. He was a docent with the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities for many years, leading tours through the Moffitt-Ladd House in Portsmouth, N.H. An intrepid scholar, he often led impromptu walking tours through towns and neighborhoods along the New England coast where his relatives had lived.

He was a summa cum laude graduate of the University of Southern Maine, and a member of Phi Kappa Phi.

He was a faithful and tireless member of Alcoholics Anonymous for more than 16 years, helping many people in Portland and Southern Maine on their journeys of recovery from alcoholism and addiction. He will be greatly missed by the many people he aided.

Born in New York City on Dec. 26, 1952, he is survived by his parents, Virginia (Monks) Burr and Benjamin M. Burr Sr. of Georgetown, Maine and Stuart, Fla.; his sister and brother-in-law, Sarah Burr and Tim Lewis of New York, his sister, Pam Smith of Brunswick; his brother and sister-in-law, John and Karen Burr of Atlantic Beach, Fla.; one niece and one nephew, Emily and Ian Burr of Atlantic Beach, Fla.; and a large extended family.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday at the Brackett Funeral Home, 29 Federal St., Brunswick at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in his memory to The Milestone Foundation, 65 India St., Portland, ME 04101 or to Hospice Volunteers in Mid Coast Maine, 45 Baribeau Dr., Brunswick, ME 04011.

Rosamond Clarke

CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. - Rosamond (Coolidge) Clarke, 84, of Clifton Park, N.Y. and Kennebunk Beach, Maine died May 30, 2004 at the St. Mary's Hospital in Troy, N.Y.

She had lived in Woodstock, Vt. for more than 50 years. She was the wife of the late Frederick Colton Clarke Jr. and the daughter of the late Henry James Coolidge and Gladys Isabelle Trowbridge.

She was born July 7, 1919 in Kennebunk Beach. She was a proud graduate of the Emma Willard School and Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School. She was a member of the First Congregational Church, League of Women Voters, Girl Scouts of America, troop leader, volunteer librarian at the Woodstock Elementary School, Woodstock Recreational Center, member of the Woodstock Country Club, Emma Willard Alumni Association, former officer of the Kennebunk Beach Improvement Association, and member of the Edgecomb Tennis Club.

She will be lovingly remembered by her two daughters, Elizabeth B. Clarke of Torrington, Conn., and Martha C. Dedrick and her husband Charles of Wynantskill, N.Y.; five grandchildren, Laura Clarke of Torrington, Conn., Kaylee, Steven, William, and Anna Dedrick, all of Wynantskill, N.Y.; two nieces and one nephew.

She was predeceased by her sister, Louise Coolidge Oswald.

Services were held Wednesday June 2 in Woodstock, Vt. and in the Longmeadow, Mass. cemetery on June 3.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Kennebunk Beach Improvement Association, Children's Program, 262 Beach Ave., Kennebunk, ME 04043.

Edith Downs

WELLS - Edith M. Downs, 85, long-time resident of High Pine in Wells, died July 12, 2004 at the Kennebunk Nursing Home.

She was born Dec. 26, 1918, one of eight children to Allen and Edith (Conners) Hilton and attended local schools. With much perseverance, she was the only child to graduate from Wells High School. She married Everett Downs Nov. 30, 1941 in York and shared more than 44 years of marriage before his death in 1986.

She was a housekeeper for many of the hotels and motels in and around Wells beach. She also worked as a nanny. Her true love was caring for her husband and family. She was known as the "Neighborhood Mom" - their home was a refuge for many in the neighborhood. She enjoyed blueberry picking and making fine pies and muffins. She tended her gardens and canned many of the vegetables for future meals. She was very attached to her dog, Babe and greatly saddened by his death. She will be remembered for her gentle touch and giving generously with her time and talents.

Survivors include three sons, Allen and wife Linda Downs of Wells, Arthur and wife, Althea Downs of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Russell Downs of

Wells; one brother, Fred and wife, Lois Hilton of Sanford; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

One son predeceased her, Albert Downs in 1970 and a granddaughter, Sherrie Pierce in 1997, also, a daughter-in-law, Cindy Downs in July 1991 and six

siblings, Mercy Gray, Francis Hilton, Erastus (Tiny) Hilton, Warren Hilton, Russell Hilton and Arthur Hilton.

A funeral will be held today at 11 a.m. at the Heald Funeral Home, 580 Main St., Springvale. Burial will follow at the Chadbourne cemetery in Lyman.

Melville Ellis

KENNEBUNK - Melville Joseph Ellis, 89, of Huntington Commons, died July 3, 2004 at Southern Maine Medical Center after a brief illness.

He formerly resided in Pennsauken and Cape May, N.J.

He was born Jan. 4, 1915 in State College, Pa., the son of Ernest J. Ellis, Manchester, England and Jane E. Brown of Kidderminster, England.

He married Kathryn (Van Dyke) Richardson on July 18, 1933; she predeceased him in 2001 after 68 years of marriage. His son, M. James Ellis of Newport Beach, Calif., died in 2002 at the age of 59.

After graduating from Camden High School in 1933, he attended The Warten School of the University of Pennsylvania which prepared him for a long career in the insurance industry. He worked his entire business life as an agent for Loyal Protective Life Insurance Company in Boston. When retired, he became a licensed Real Estate Broker and during World War II he served in the New Jersey State Guard.

While living in Pennsauken, N.J. he was involved in many civic organizations, serving as president of the Lyons Club, Warden of the Vestry of Grace Episcopal Church, and on several committees for the Episcopal Diocese of N.J.

The Ellises resided for more than 50 years during the summer and retirement in Cape May, N.J. As one of the founders of the Harbor Sailing Club of Cape May, he secured the Charter for the Corinthian Yacht Club of Cape May. He served as the first Commodore of the New Corinthian. He was in the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary and warden of the Vestry of the Church of the Advent. He was a member of the Merchantville Masonic Lodge, Crescent Temple A.A.O.N.M.S. of Trenton and Cape May County Shrine Club. They moved to Kennebunk in 2000 and were members of St. David's and St. Ann's Episcopal Church.

He is survived by one daughter, Marjorie Ellis Downes and son-in-law John A. Downes of Kennebunk Beach; one daughter-in-law, Jacquie Ellis of Newport Beach, Calif.; six grandchildren, Michael Ellis Downes of Kensington, N.H.; Kathryn Downes Miller and her husband Douglas H. Miller of Woodstock, Vt.; Lauren Ellis Sipelis and her husband Vitas Sipelis of San Clemente, Calif.; Leigh Ellis of San Francisco, Calif.; Rebecca Ellis Broderick and her husband Andrew Broderick of Basalt, Colo.; Jaimee Ellis of Irvine, Calif.; and two great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Ellis Miller and Kathryn Winslow Miller of Woodstock, Vt.

Service and Interment will be Tuesday, July 27 at 11 a.m. at St. David's Episcopal Church Memorial Garden.

Roger Hall

ARUNDEL - Roger Merrill Hall, 52, a resident of Log Cabin Road, Arundel, died July 5, 2004 at the Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.

He was born in Hartford, Conn. on Nov. 3, 1951, the eldest son of Leon L. and Ethel L. (Merrill) Hall. He attended local schools.

He was a master chef for nearly 30 years until his illness, then he turned to his hobby, antiques. He was well versed in the subject. He bought and sold antiques as well as repairing them with excellence.

He was predeceased by his parents.

He is survived by his one sister, Roxanne of Winter Haven, Fla.; his three brothers, Roy Hall and his wife Lee of Wolfeboro, N.H., Ronald Hall of Florida, and Robert Hall of New Durham, N.H.; his soul mate, Rene Stephans and her daughter Dominique, both of Arundel; and numerous of aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

A funeral was held Saturday at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk, with the Rev. Carolyn Lambert officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Roger Merrill Hall Fund c/o Peoples Heritage Bank, 56 Portland Rd., Kennebunk, ME 04043 in his memory. Arrangements by the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.

Clifford Burgess

KENNEBUNK - Clifford Wilson Burgess died July 18, 2004, at his home in Huntington Common after a long illness. He was born in Stratford, Conn. on June 22, 1912, the son of George M. and Gertrude M. Burgess. In 1942, he married Mary (Richardson) Steele of Wilbraham, Mass.

He was a graduate of Bard College and later, for 10 years, was a trustee of Bard. After graduation, he entered the family business, the P. and B. Engraving Company in Springfield, Mass., later becoming its president.

In 1968, he and his wife bought a cottage in Point Arundel, Kennebunkport, where they vacationed until 1977 when he retired and became a full-time resident. He became deeply involved in town politics, being a member of the planning board for nine years and a member of the board of selectmen for six years. He was also active on the Kennebunkport Conservation Trust.

He was a man of many hobbies, the foremost being oil painting at which he spent many hours. He was a vigorous bicyclist, owning several racing bikes and until recently he spent several days a week swimming with friends in Dover, N.H. He was an Airedale lover and was often seen walking his dog, Rocky. He also wrote letters to the paper on a variety of subjects, often disagreeing with the powers that be. He was an omnivorous reader and was a lifetime student of English history and architecture, even living in a Tudor cottage. He had an active mind up until the end.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years; one son, John and his wife, Lin; one daughter-in-law, Margo; and four grandchildren, Sara B. Gott, John W., Elizabeth and Claire Burgess.

A son, David, predeceased him in 2002.

A private family service will be held at a later date.

Reginald Cousens

KENNEBUNK - Reginald L. Cousens, 88, a lifelong resident of Kennebunk died July 17, 2004 at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.

He was born in Kennebunk on Sept. 27, 1915, a son of Roy and Carrie (Harris) Cousens. He attended local schools and served in the U.S. Army in World War II.

He worked at Saco Lowell in Saco for many years. He was a member of the American Legion in Kennebunk.

He enjoyed watching and recording wrestling and collecting Betty Boop memorabilia.

He was predeceased by his wife Irene Cousens who died in 1993.

He is survived by one step-daughter, Irene Joan Baker of Lyman; two step-grandchildren, Cathy Hilton of Sanford, and Richard Hilton of Lyman.

Visiting hours will be held today from 9 to 10 a.m. followed by a 10 o'clock service at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk, with the Rev. Sally Lucas officiating. Interment will be in Hope Cemetery, Kennebunk.
