Mary Rasche

KENNEBUNK - Mary Margaret (Burnap) Rasche, 96, died peacefully Oct. 18, 2004 at her assisted living residence at Bradford on the Common in Kennebunk, after a long life characterized by love of family; an energetic, caring, and concerned outlook for everyone she met; and a determination to be useful to others.

She was born May 28, 1908 in Pelican Rapids, Minnesota, the daughter of Dr. Willard L. Burnap and Mary Abby (Merrill) Burnap. She was the sister of Eunice Burnap Jackson, Catharine Burnap Bruce, and Barbara Burnap Donoho, all of whom predeceased her. She was the widow of the Rev. Dr. Robert L. Rasche whom she married in Fergus Falls, Minn. in 1932.

She lived in Pelican Rapids until she was in the first grade, moving to Fergus Falls, Minn. where her father and two other doctors established a medical clinic.

She attended the University of Minnesota, graduating in 1930 with a specialty in pre-school child development. Upon graduation, she accepted a position as director of Christian Education at Plymouth Congregational Church in Denver. The position was contingent on her taking summer courses at Chicago Theological Seminary which she did. As she left to go back to Colorado, an East Indian student asked her to look up a Bob Rasche and thank him for the coat that Rasche had given him while the two men were at seminary. Rasche was serving as student pastor at Mayflower Church in Denver. At a Congregational Church association meeting, she met Robert Rasche. They were married Sept. 3, 1932 in Fergus Falls.

They served many years in many churches as a real but unofficial team, with Bob being the paid pastor and Mary Margaret working without pay but many long hours with the children and younger families of the church. After their marriage, they continued at Mayflower Church in Denver. In 1934, they accepted a call to serve the First Congregational Church in Longmont, Colo. where their only child, son Robert, was born. They subsequently moved to the Congregational Church in Northfield, Minn. where they were until late 1942 when her husband enlisted as a chaplain in the U.S. Navy. During the war, she lived in Fergus Falls, where she undertook the care of Sheng Han whose own mother had died in childbirth. Sheng was part of her family until he was about 6, but has always regarded her as mother, a feeling that she returned.

Following World War II, she returned with her family for a brief stay in Northfield, but shortly came to Beverly, Mass. in 1946 and remained there until 1964 when her husband retired and they moved into a home that they had built in Topsfield, Mass. There, she served as director of Christian Education of the Congregational Church in Topsfield. She lived there until 1987 when she moved to a retirement community in Whitewater, Wisc. She was active in the Congregational Church of Whitewater. In 2001, she returned to New England to live in the Huntington Common retirement complex in Kennebunk where she was near her grandchildren and great- grandchildren.

She had a burning desire to be useful to others. She was an unofficial foster parent and caring mentor to countless young people and she was a ready and caring friend to anyone she felt needed a hand. She accepted people for who they were and, in her non-judgmental way, always looked for the best in everyone.

She was a member of the P.E.O Sisterhood since 1933. In 2002 she was honored for 75 years of membership in Sigma Kappa Sorority.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Robert W. and Margaret E. Rasche of Wells; four grandchildren, Robert C. Rasche of Bellingham, Mass. and his wife Jan, Stephen M. Rasche of York, and his wife Tori, Robin E. Barnard of Wells and her husband Kevin, and Kathryn A. Andrews of Wells and her husband, Eric; eight great-grand children, Anna, Katherine, Samuel, and Thomas Rasche, Timothy Barnard, and Madeline, Elizabeth, and Gary Andrews. She is also survived by Sheng (Charles) Han of Scottsdale, Ariz.

A graveside service was held on Friday at the North Beverly cemetery in Beverly, Mass. A memorial service will be held today at 11 a.m. at the Wells Congregational Church, Route 1, Wells, with the Rev. Herb Henry officiating both services.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in her name to Robert L. Rasche Scholarship Fund, Second Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, 35 Conant St., Beverly, MA 01915.

Arrangements by Bibber Memorial Chapel, Wells.
