Janice Kennedy

SUGAR HILL, Ga. – Janice (Finn) Kennedy, 48, of Sugar Hill, Ga. passed away on Nov. 9, 2005.

She was born in Chelsea, Mass. on Oct. 4, 1957. She graduated from Melrose High School in Melrose, Mass. in 1975, and graduated from Katherine Gibbs School in Boston, Mass.

She was a former cheerleading commissioner of North Gwinnett Recreation League. She was a center director of LA Petite Academy from 1990-2000; 100 Percent Club; Pete’s Elite; and Director of the Year.

She was center director and area manager for Knowledge Learning Corporation from 2000-2005. She was very well respected in childcare. She touched so many children’s lives over the last 15 years.

She was a member of the Catholic Church of St. Monica in Duluth, Ga.

Surviving are her husband of 18 years, Thomas F. Kennedy of Sugar Hill, Ga.; one daughter, Courtney Paige Kennedy of Sugar Hill, Ga.; mother, Mrs. Marie Leonard Finn of Kennebunk; one sister and brother-in-Law Kathy and Robert Anuszewski of Kennebunk; one brother, Joseph V. Finn III of Kennebunk; two nieces, Christine and Susan Anuszewski; one nephew Ryan Finn,; and brother-in-law, Timothy Kennedy of Orlando, Fla.

Funeral services were held Saturday at the Catholic Church of St. Monica, with Father Chito Palang officiating. Interment in Broadlawn Memorial Gardens, Buford, Ga.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Diabetic Association in her memory.

Willete McNary

KENNEBUNK — Willette P. McNary, 95, formerly of Falmouth, Mass., died Nov. 8, 2005, at the Kennebunk Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

She was lovingly called “Auntie Billie” or “Willie” by all who loved her, and was a committed woman to making the world a better place.

She was born in Worcester, Mass. on July 11, 1910, a daughter of Lewis E. and Katherine (Craigen) Pierce.

She graduated from Deering High School and Tufts University for her undergraduate degree, and Boston University graduate earning her master’s degree in social work.

She had worked for the American Red Cross during World War II and also held positions working with Refugees with the Norfolk House in Boston and also in Madison and Milwaukee, Wisc.

Throughout her entire life she traveled widely. She had a global view of the world but took personal, local action all of her life. People from all over the world made a home in her home as they made the transition from their birth country to the United States.

She never had children but was a close involved aunt, great aunt, and great-great aunt. She sponsored the support of children through Child Reach, UNICEF, and a variety of programs where you could support a child with a monthly donation and letters.

She was a member of the Unitarian Church, Hospice, and a supporter of Doctors Without Borders.

She will be missed by all who knew her.

She is predeceased by her husband, Jack McNary; two brothers, Louis Pierce and Richard Pierce; and a sister, Katherine Pierce Hulsey.

Surviving are nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held the Kennebunk Unitarian Universalist Church at a time and date to be announced in the summer of 2006 when her family can all get together and her friends are warmly invited.

Arrangements are by the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer Street, Kennebunk, ME 04043.

Karen White

WELLS — Karen E. White, 51, passed away Nov. 13, 2005, after a lengthy illness.

She was born in Winchester, Mass., and attended Arlington schools.

She was the daughter of William F. and Marilyn T. White of Wells; mother of Jennifer E. Degraffenried and husband Richard of Oceanside, Calif.; also a very special friend of David White of Alexandria, N.H.

There will be a memorial service at a later date.

Robert Clark

KENNEBUNK — Robert E. Clark, 74, died at his residence in Sweetwater Oaks.

He was born July 12, 1931, in Ashland, N.Y., the son of Floyd E. and Lucy (Whalen) Clark.

He is survived by one sister, Alice Barriger and one brother, Pat Clark of New York; one son, Charles Clark of Tennessee; two grandchildren, Paul Clingerman and Tara Lee Pierce; one stepson, Ray Estes; and his longtime companion, Amalia (Marlie) Phillips.

Two daughters predeceased him.

A memorial service is being planned during the week after Christmas and Interment will be at a later date in Kennebunk.

Helen Colby

SANFORD — Helen B. Colby, 83, of Sanford, formerly of Wells, died on Nov. 29, 2005, at the Newton Center.

She was born Oct. 6, 1922, to Ethel B. Horne and William J. Burrows in Springvale.

She lived in Massachusetts for nine years, then returned to Springvale. She was employed in the Sanford Mills Cost Department and Design Division until her marriage to Clarence G. Colby in 1948, and then they moved to Wells. She attended Sanford schools and was in the class of 1940 at Sanford High.

In 1952, she joined the then-called Farm Bureau, now the Cooperative Extension Service.

She was a 46-year member serving as safety chairman, international chairman, chairman of the Wells Branch Extension and Alewive Extension. She served three, three-year terms as county chairman. She also served as state safety chairman, state treasurer, international chair, vice chair, and state president for three-and-a-half years.

While serving in these offices, she attended 15 National Conferences and eight International Conferences.

In 1983, at the Association Country Women of the World Conference in Kellarney, Ireland, she ran for and was elected to the Extension and National Services Commission for three years, attending meetings at the University of Reading and University of Birmingham.

In 1958, she was co-founder of the Cub Scout Pack 356 and was a den mother for six years; served as commissioner for several years ending as a chairman of the commission; was a founder of Boy Scout Troop 300 and formed the Mothers’ Club to purchase camping equipment for the troop.

In 1975, she ran for selectman in Wells, was elected as the first woman on the board, and served eight years. She resigned after the death of her husband in 1982. She was responsible for getting the first ordinance through town meeting. She helped found the Athletic Boosters at Wells High and was the second president.

She was a member of the Wells Branch Baptist Church and served as treasurer, auditor, Sunday school teacher, and sang in the choir. She started the Young married Couples Group and belonged to the Ladies Aid at the High Pine Baptist Church.

She was a world traveler and visited all continents except Antarctica. She also visited 48 of the 50 states. She worked in the town clerk’s office for the town of Wells during the 1950s and 1960s, and also several years in the Wells post office.

She had also been an antique dealer. Her hobbies included bowling, traveling, and knitting.

She is survived by one son, Jay W. Colby, daughter-in-law, Marcia, two grandchildren, Diane A. Colby and Wade P. Colby, all of Sanford; one niece, Barbara Haines of Dover, N.H.; and one nephew, Richard Goodwin of Sanford.

A celebration of her life memorial was held on Friday at Bibber Memorial Chapel, Wells. Interment was at Ocean View Cemetery, Wells.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 343 Gorham Rd., South Portland, ME 04106 or to the York County Extension Homemakers, Attn: Millicent Moody, treasurer, 963 Burnt Mill Rd., Wells, ME 04090 in her memory.

Elinor Hayes

OGUNQUIT — Elinor (York) Hayes, 89, a longtime resident of Ogunquit, died Nov. 29, 2005, in York Hospital.

She was born in North Berwick, daughter of Everett and Lillian (Barbour) Hayes. She was the owner and operator of Haye’s Guest House in Ogunquit for 40 years. She was an avid flower gardener, antique and doll collector, sun worshiper and traveler. She enjoyed crafts, painting, knitting, animals and making braided rugs.

Her husband, Raymond R. Hayes predeceased her.

She leaves one daughter, Jean H. Gray of Concord, N.H.; nine grandchildren, Deborah A. Putnam, Carol A. Putnam, Jo-Ann Putnam, Brenda J. Brassard, Dwight Littlefield, Dawn Littlefield, B. Gray Hirshfield, Meredith B. Gray and David A. Gray; seven great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; her dog Henry.

Two daughters, Brenda “Bebo” Denning, Caroline “Kay” Littlefield, one granddaughter, Brenda June Gray, a grandson, Raymond “Ricky” Littlefield and her dog Bozo predeceased her.

A graveside service was held Friday in Ocean View, Cemetery, Wells.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Maine Chapter, 163 Lancaster St., Suite 160 B, Portland, ME 04101-2406 or to Another Chance Animal Rescue, PO Box 552, North Berwick, ME 03906.

Payson Hunter

KENNEBUNK — Payson L. Hunter, 94, a resident of Penny Lane, Kennebunk, died Dec. 4, 2005 at his home.

He was born in Lenapah, Okla. on July 5, 1911, a son of George Washington and Louise (Loy) Hunter. He attended local schools in Oklahoma. In his younger years, he was a Boy Scout leader and an Eagle Scout. He graduated from Antioch College, Yellow Springs, Ohio class of 1933.

He served the U.S. Navy during World War II as LT. Junior Grade, stationed in Virginia Beach, Va. He met his future wife, Odette Young at the World’s Fair in 1939 and they married in 1942.

He lived in Southport, Conn., where he was employed by IBM in New York for 37 years before moving to Kennebunk in 1976.

He was an appraisal agent for Jack Libby Real Estate of Kennebunk until 2004. In 1980s, he was involved in the expansion and addition of Kennebunk High School, where he was honored with an award.

He was a member and past president of the Senior Center, Lower Village, Kennebunk, member and past president of the Southern Maine Agency of Aging and member of the Lions Club of Kennebunk- Kennebunkport. He also volunteer drove for the F.I.S.H. program for several years.

He enjoyed watercolor painting, sailing and enjoyed following politics.

He was predeceased by his wife Odette Young Hunter who died in 2003.

He is survived by two sons, Payson Y. Hunter of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and George L Hunter of Kennebunk; one daughter, Pamela L. Emery of Centerville, Mass.; one brother, G. Truman Hunter of Oxford, Ohio; and four grandchildren, Matthew and Taylor Hunter, Travis Emery and Elinor Barish.

A funeral will be held today at 11 a m. at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk, with Rev. Carolyn Lambert officiating. Private Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Springvale,

Should friends desire, memorial donations may be made in his memory to the Senior Center at Lower Village, 175 Port Rd., Kennebunk, ME 04043.

Donald Kellett

KENNEBUNKPORT — Donald E. Kellett, 69, 37-year resident, passed peacefully at his home Dec. 1, 2005.

Born in Ely, Nev. on Aug. 25, 1936, the son of Rev. Ernest W. “Bumpa” and Mary B. “Nana” Kellett, while serving as missionaries on the Shoshone and Arapaho Indian reservation in the Badlands of South Dakota.

He attended Howe Military School in Indiana, graduated high school from Kent’s Hill, (Maine), class of 1954. Returning to South Dakota, he attended Dakota Wesleyan in Mitchell. He rounded out his academic career in at Nasson College, Springvale.

In 1959, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. acquiring the rank of sergeant serving until 1968, served in Vietnam as photojournalist for the Navy Times, received the Air Medal for combat flight time, most notably for his coverage of MEDEVAC teams which appeared in Life magazine. He was a member of the American Legion Post 159 and VFW Post 140.

After Vietnam, he returned to provide for his family and started a career in carpentry, his fondness of New England craftsmanship turned into a lifetime passion for fine woodworking.

He devoted his life in constant pursuit of knowledge and developing the techniques he deemed necessary to qualify himself as skilled craftsman. This passion might have only been overshadowed by his love of music and conversation, they were inseparable for him.

He co-owned the Lobster Pot Restaurant in Cape Porpoise, was a member of St. David’s Episcopal Church. He enjoyed sports and was a longtime fan and follower of high school and collegiate sports, was an avid tennis player and in his later years developed a fondness for women’s collegiate basketball and became a member of UNE’s Body Wise where he exercised everyday and continued to expand his interests and build new relationships.

He was predeceased by his parents, the Rev. Ernest W. Kellett and Mary B. Kellett, and granddaughter Molly Stevens Pepin.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Jacqueline Ann (Jackie) Kellett; six children, Mark William Kellett, Leslie Ann Pepin, Matthew Scott Kellett, Melissa Beth Mitchell, Andrew Donald Kellett and Alicia Nan Kellett; and 10 grandchildren, Shiloh Jade Pepin, Amanda, Jillian, Gabriel Kellett, Jacob, Emily and Samantha Mitchell, Zachary Kellett, Elizabeth and Patrick Kellett and Elizabeth and Katherine Center.

He touched everyone he came in contact with. Memories of his engaging and often philosophical conversations will help sustain us all. God bless.

Robert Ludwig

KENNEBUNKPORT —Robert S. Ludwig, 82, of Paddy Creek Road, died the afternoon of Nov. 30, 2005, at home.

He was born in Lowell, Mass., on June 19, 1923, a son of Albert Ashton and Fanny (Rugg Sawyer) Ludwig. He graduated from Chelmsford High School, class of 1941. He then entered the University of Maine. World War II interrupted his schooling, and he honorably served his country as a Naval aviator.

He was a torpedo bomber pilot in Carrier Air Group 97. After his discharge from the Navy, he returned to the University of Maine where he graduated in 1948 with a degree in mechanical engineering. Upon graduation, he went to work as an engineer for Atlas Plywood Corp., followed by the Tide Water Oil Company. In December 1951, he married Muriel Whitehouse. They remained married for 41 years until her death in 1993. In 1961, he purchased and restored Arundel Wharf in Kennebunkport and established Arundel Marine Services. From 1962 through 1986, he taught physics at South Portland High school. He was a member, and past commodore of the Arundel Yacht Club; a member of the Arundel Lodge 76, A.F. & A.M.; former chairman, Kennebunkport Planning Board; and an active volunteer and docent of the Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve, and the Laudholm Trust. He was treasurer of Kennebunkport Emergency Medical Service for more than 20 years.

Survivors include one son, Philip W. Ludwig and his wife Joan of Kennebunk; one brother, Allan A. Ludwig of Pepperell, Mass.; and two granddaughters, Julie and Lauren Ludwig.

A funeral service was held Friday at Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk, with Rev. Charles Whiston presiding.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his name to Laudholm Trust, PO Box 1007, Wells, ME 04090 or to KEMS Inc., PO Box 4608, Kennebunkport, ME 04046.
