Loren Kelley

BIDDEFORD - Loren Willis Kelley, 78, of South Street, died Monday at Southridge Living Center.

He was born May 11, 1922 in Roxbury, Mass., a son of Walter and Marion (Stone) Kelley, graduated from Canton High School in Canton, Mass. and received a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1950.

Mr. Kelley served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He was employed as an electrical engineer for Sylvania in Hillsboro, N.H. for many years.

Mr. Kelley enjoyed spending his free time woodworking.

His wife, Wilda L. (Brown) Kelley, died in 1987. A son, Steven, also died previously.

Surviving are four sons, Paul of Lynn, Mass., Robert of Hillsboro, N.H., James of Kennebunk and Peter of Leeds; a brother, Walter of Marston Mills, Mass.; a sister, Lois Robertson of South Orleans, Mass.; and eight grandchildren.

Thelma Norman

WELLS - Thelma B. Norman, 84, of Loop Road, died Monday at York Hospital.

She was born Aug. 21, 1917 in Boston and graduated from Brighton High School in 1935.

She married Oliver Norman in 1937. He died Jan. 10, 1997.

Mrs. Norman was employed by Raytheon in Boston for 12 years as a supervisor, then was by Dr. Lapirow in Kennebunk for 22 years.

Survivors include her daughter, Drusilla Hill of Hernando, Fla.; three grandchildren, David Hill and Elizabeth Howarth, both of Wells, and Steven Hill of Northampton, Mass., and four great-grandchildren.

Roland Chaloux

WELLS - Roland Anthony Chaloux, 85, of Old County Road, died Monday at his home.

He was born Feb. 17, 1917 in Adams, Mass., a son of Alphonse and Emela LeBlanc Chaloux, and attended schools in Massachusetts.

Mr. Chaloux served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II.

He was the owner/operator of a logging company for many years and also worked several years at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

Mr. Chaloux was a lifetime member of the Lions Club and a Third Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, both in Wells. He was an avid Boston Red Sox fan and enjoyed playing horseshoes and card games, hunting with his sons, and bowling in leagues in Sanford and at the former Glenmor Lanes in Kennebunk.

He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church.

His wife, Hermie Barrows Chaloux, died in 2000. A brother and four sisters also died previously.

Surviving are two sons, Norman of Washington, Vt. and Daniel of Moody; a daughter, Dolores King of Wells; a brother, Alcide of Westminster, Vt.; 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Lida Choate

SACO - Lida Evelyn Tarbox Mehlman Choate, 90, of Wildwood Drive, died Monday at the Pine Point Nursing Home in Scarborough.

She was born in Biddeford Pool, a daughter of Ernest A. and Laura Snow Tarbox, and graduated from Thornton Academy in 1929, where she was a member of the Tripod staff and was proud of the fact that in her senior year she earned a school letter for selling the most ads.

She had lived in Scarborough for more than 20 years but had made her home for the past five years with her daughter in Saco.

She worked for the Mutual Fire Insurance Co. from 1929 until moving to Kittery in 1947, then worked in the William E. Dennett Insurance Agency, managing the office while Mr. Dennett was a member of the Maine Legislature. She retired in 1968 to move to Pine Point to care for her mother and, after her mother's death in 1970, came out of retirement to work at the D.T. Moore Agency in Saco. While there she was named Insurance Woman of the Year.

She was known for more than 25 years across the country as a reputable breeder of Maine Coon and Himalayan kittens, placing them in Germany and Switzerland. Her kittens drew the attention of actors Lee Meredith and "Hawaii Five-0" co-star James McArthur, the son of her favorite actress, Helen Hayes. This resulted in a letter-writing friendship until Ms. Hayes' death.

She was interviewed often by local media as the "Cat Lady" of Pine Point. She published a story in the early 1980s about how the Maine Coon got its name, and was instrumental in the Maine Coon cat achieving "State Cat" status.

For more than 40 years she did family genealogy and was a member of the Massachusetts Mayflower Society as a descendant of Stephen Hopkins.

Her first husband, Gordon H. Mehlman, died in 1957, her second husband, David Choate, died in 1978 and a niece, Barbara Pope White, died in 1972.

Survivors include a daughter, Glen Ellen Roth of Saco; a son, Gordon Mehlman of Reading, Mass.; a nephew, James R. Pope of Eliot; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Maurice Demeule

SACO - Maurice J. Demeule, 79, of Ocean Park Road, died Tuesday at his home.

He was born in Biddeford on Feb. 28, 1922, a son of Elciar and Melvina Marceau Demeule, and attended schools there.

He was employed by Saco Tanning for 22 years and retired from Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford. He also worked for the A&P supermarket in the bakery department.

Mr. Demeule was an avid woodworker and was known for making wooden dollhouses for Notre Dame School fairs. He enjoyed making crafts, was a member and past president of the Fremont Club and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and served in the Navy Seabees during World War II.

He was a communicant of Notre Dame de Lourdes Church.

Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Pauline Sevigny Demeule; a daughter, Therese M. (Mrs. Richard) Work of Battle Creek, Mich.; a brother, Lucien of Biddeford; three sisters, Laurette Baillargeon of Biddeford, Marcella Sellers of Florida and Lucille Garland of Old Orchard Beach; two granddaughters and several nieces and nephews.

Arthur Marcotte

SANFORD - Arthur Zackery Marcotte, 95, died Tuesday at Goodall Hospital.

He was born on March 18, 1905 in St. George, Canada, the son of Alcide and Alexina Labonte Marcotte, and attended schools there.

He moved to the United States at age 15.

Mr. Marcotte worked for the S.B. Emery Furniture Company as a deliveryman and repairman.

He and his wife, Simone, owned and operated Art's Variety in Sanford for many years.

Family members say he was a hard worker and always provided for his family.

His wife died in 1994, a son, Robert, died in 1968 and another son, Armand, died in 1999. Two brothers, George and Aime, and three sisters, Antoinette Trahan, Jeanne Normand and Alpaide Roy, also died previously.

Surviving are three daughters, Louise (Mrs. Maurice) Veilleux of Sanford, Florence (Mrs. Lionel) Thibeault of Somersworth, N.H. and Irene (Mrs. Normand) Dumont of Corona, Calif.; a brother, Edmond of Sherbrooke, Canada; 14 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandson.

Grace Hooper

SANFORD - Grace B. Hooper, 94, formerly of Bridge Street, Springvale, died Tuesday at The Newton Center.

She was born Jan. 6, 1906, in Somersworth, N.H., was the daughter of Charles and Lily Wentworth Winn, and attended schools there.

Mrs. Hooper had worked for both the East Rochester and Springvale shoe shops. She also worked in the kitchen at Nasson College.

She was a member of the Springvale Free Baptist Church, where she was a choir member for 30 years, and also taught Sunday School for many years. She was also a member of the Gleaners at the Church andenjoyed playing the piano, singing, cooking and crochet.

Her husband, Earl Hooper, died in 1985 and two grandsons, Alan Vachon and Lloyd Davis, died in 1999.

She is survived by three daughters, Frances Torno of Lebanon, Marjorie (Mrs. David) Brown of Sanford and Wilma (Mrs. Walter) Davis of Alfred; six grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Beverly Pinkham

SANFORD - Former resident Beverly J. Pinkham, 68, of Huckins Avenue in York, died Monday at York Hospital.

She was born June 10, 1932 in Sanford, the daughter of Richard and Marjorie Porell Hanson, and was a 1950 graduate of York High School.

Mrs. Hanson had lived in Illinois, Kentucky and Kwajalein Island in the Marshall Islands before returning to York in 1979.

She had worked in York at Cliff's Shoes as a saleswoman and at Micromed Corp.

She enjoyed painting, golf, swimming, fishing and caring for her dog.

Mrs. Hanson attended the Beech Ridge Assembly of God Church and the United Methodist Church of York.

Her husband, Howard L. Pinkham Sr., died in 1986 and a son, Rodney, died in 1979.

Survivors include a son, Howard L. Jr. of York; a daughter, Dawn Evans of Irving, Ill.; her mother of York; a brother, Richard Hanson of York; four grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Alice Bourque

BIDDEFORD - Alice M. Bourque, 89, of Dearborn Avenue, died Wednesday at Maine Medical Center in Portland following a long illness.

She was born March 9, 1913 in Biddeford, a daughter of George and Sara Dalphond Martin, and graduated from Biddeford High School in 1931. While in her sixties, she received her B.S. and M.S. in Adult Education from the University of Southern Maine.

In October 1940, she married Fernando A. Bourque at St. Joseph's Church. He died in 1972.

Mrs. Bourque was a homemaker while raising her children. After returning to school to receive her higher education, she worked at Saco Adult Learning Center and was recognized as the National Adult Basic Education Teacher of the Year in 1979. Mrs. Bourque worked as a volunteer at York Institute Museum in Saco, Wardwell Center, and at other local organizations.

She enjoyed the theater, beaches and the ocean, and wintering in Europe.

A son, Maj. Marty Bourque, who was serving with the U. S. Air Force in Germany, died May 13, 1980.

Surviving are a son, Robert F. of Biddeford; four grandchildren, Meridith Comeau of South Portland, Elizabeth of Boston, Mass., Casey of Wolfeboro, N. H. and Jacob of Orlando, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Carolyn Anderson

KENNEBUNK - Carolyn A. Anderson, 67, of Harding Way, formerly of Idlewood Lane in Kittery, died Wednesday at her home.

She was born Jan. 23, 1935 in Dover, N.H., the daughter of George H. and Hazel Lewis Blaisdell, attended Dover High School and received her diploma in 1989 from the Marshwood Adult Education program.

She was an assembler and supervisor at Watts Fluid Power in Kittery for 20 years and also authored the column "Sweet Memories" in Foster's Daily Democrat from 1982 to 1985.

Mrs. Anderson enjoyed cooking, cross-stitching, knitting and spending time with family and friends. She was a member of First Parish Congregational Church of York and the American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 6 of Portsmouth, N.H.

Her husband, Donald James Anderson, died in 1999.

Survivors include one son, George Drew of York; three daughters, Karen Miller of Kennebunk, Lauren Clark of Wells and Jennifer McFarland of York; one sister, Shirley Calvert of Portsmouth; two stepchildren, James of Vernon, Conn. and Martha Brullotte of Portsmouth; 11 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and two stepgrandchildren.

Arleen Clemons

BIDDEFORD - Arleen F. Clemons, 60, of Elm Street, died Wednesday at Southern Maine Medical Center.

She was born April 14, 1941 in Portland, a daughter of Albert and Annie Boton Dugas, and was educated there.

She is survived by a son, Roger of Auburn.
