Gerald “Bill” Cloutier

NEWPORT & CORINNA - Gerald “Bill” F. Cloutier, 87, passed away peacefully June 15, 2006 at Sebasticook Valley Hospital after a short illness. He was born December 21, 1918 at Dexter, a son of Freeman and Lucille (Chevery) Clukey. He was raised by his great aunt and uncle Metivier. Bill was educated in Corinna schools and received his GED from the State of Maine while serving in the military.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1941 and served 33 months in the Pacific Theater during WWII. After his discharge from the Army in 1945 he went to Lewiston to run a restaurant for a short time. He returned to Corinna and operated a restaurant, and later, a cab service. In 1953, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, serving a tour of duty in Saudi Arabia. In the States, he was stationed in Tennessee, Illinois, and Washington State. While living in Washington he and his wife developed lifelong friendships that have lasted across the country. Bill retired in 1969 after 24 years of military service. After retiring from the military he ran Central Body Shop in Corinna for several years. This was a local hangout for area teenage boys who were always checking to see what Bill was rebuilding, fixing up or just plain making go faster. He was a member and past commander of the American Legion Post 73 and was member of Parian Lodge 160 AF & AM, both of Corinna. Bill had a zest for life and everything in it. He had a passion for motorcycles, cars, boats, and planes and rode his motorcycle well into his eighties. He loved all types of music and his feet danced to it all. He spent many wonderful Saturday nights at Bar L Hill with Barb and their many friends dancing till dawn. Bill was always the last one to leave the dance floor. Bill’s life was full of many large potholes which never slowed him down. He just filled them over and moved on to the next bump in the road. He could never sit still and enjoyed hard physical labor. He was cutting brush and working in the yard up to his final days. He was meticulous about his lawn which had to be mowed every Friday. Bill was caring, compassionate and enjoyed his long list of friends both far and near. Although Bill and Barb moved to Newport many years ago, Bill’s heart was always in Corinna and he truly looked forward to his daily visits to the restaurant there. The daily gossip and cinnamon buns were his favorite, along with a joke or two. Over the past several years Bill had been wintering in Zephyrhills, FL. He enjoyed the warm weather and the trailer park where many of his Maine friends lived. He married Barbara (Brockway) on May 5, 1955. They recently celebrated 51 years of blessed and wonderful years together. In addition to his wife of Newport, he is survived by a daughter, Jeri Lovley and husband Scott of Plymouth; a son Ryan and wife Tracy of Corinna; 6 grandchildren whom he dearly loved and truly enjoyed: Lauren Lancaster, Taylor and Meaghan Lovley, Jacob, Jessica, and Joseph Cloutier. Bill rarely missed a basketball, field hockey, softball or baseball game in which they participated. He is also survived by in-laws, Milton and Sandra Brockway of Newport, Phyllis and Hig Clukey of Spring Hill, Florida, Beverly and Louis Rancourt of Waterville, and Doris and Robert Young of Bangor; numerous nieces and nephews. Bill was predeceased by his parents, his great aunt and uncle, a brother Russell and a brother in law Donald Brockway. As a resident of Pittsfield she was a frequent visitor to the Pittsfield Public Library and was often seen there with her grandchildren. Virginia spent most of her life as a homemaker, her family was what she cherished and loved the most. She was proud and grateful for the family in her life and often expressed that with compliments and heart felt kindness. She openly shared her thoughts and opinions with enthusiasm. Her knowledge of past and current events provided her with a wealth of information, which she was always willing to share with others. Humor was important to Virginia; hers often took us by surprise. With encouragement, she was always willing to try new things, and underneath had an adventurous spirit. Virginia was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She loved to socialize and to go to family gathering’s. She never missed the opportunity to attend her grand children’s sporting events. Each season of the year also provided Virginia with new opportunities to share her enthusiasm for her favorite sports teams. Virginia enjoyed following the New England Patriots and would always call around to make sure everyone was informed of game times and stats. At every occasion she was known to have her camera with her, taking pictures. She then, gave those pictures to others in the family, those close and far away. Virginia was in touch with all of her family, and knew what was happening in their lives. She kept the family connected. Virginia remembered every special occasion, for her family and friends. She always, wrote letters, sent cards and made special telephone calls and was known for saying “ I wanted to be the first to call” Virginia will be best remembered by the way in which she touched her family and friends, with her thoughtfulness, and by remembering this we are keeping her legacy alive.
