Amelia Josephine Diamond

AUGUSTA — Amelia Josephine Diamond, 63, of 7 Ridge Road in Augusta, went home to the Lord, Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta.

She was born in Winthrop, Feb. 18, 1937, the daughter of John and Rose (Holway) DeBlois.

She attended schools in Winthrop and Wayne.

Amelia married Henry Diamond, July 2, 1955.

She had various jobs over the years. She enjoyed crafts and had a great sense of humor, but Amelia's happiest role in life was that of a wife, mother, nana and friend. She leaves behind a legacy of love of the Lord and family. She was the gem of her family and will be missed by all the lives she touched.

Amelia was preceded in death by her parents and eight brothers and sisters, Virginia, Beatrice, Rose, George, Dorothy, Lucille, Travis and Morris.

She is survived by her husband, Henry Sr., of Augusta; a son, Henry Diamond Jr., of Augusta; four daughters, Mary Swett and her husband, Jeff, of Oakland, Virginia Pare and her husband, Ron, of East Winthrop, Tammy Clements and her husband, Tom, of Mount Vernon, and Jeanne Barrows and her husband, Craig, of Randolph; two brothers, John DeBlois Sr. and his wife, Nancy, of Augusta, and Leon DeBlois and his wife, Beverly, of Monmouth; nine grandchildren, who were her joy, Brandon and Erica Diamond, of Augusta, John Donohoe Jr., of Winthrop, Joe and Brock Pare, of East Winthrop, Blake and Kate Clements, of Mount Vernon, Josie and C.J. Barrows, of Randolph; many nieces and nephews, and one special niece, Ann Lindholm, of Winthrop, who was like a daughter to her. She loved Ann with all her heart.

There will be no public visiting hours or funeral service. A private family gathering and funeral service will be held Tuesday at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop, with the Rev. Sylvio Levesque officiating.

Amelia will lie to rest at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery at a later date. For those who wish, the family asks that memorial contributions be sent to Billy Graham, PO Box 779, Minneapolis MN 55440.

Dr. Oakley A. Melendy

AUGUSTA — Dr. Oakley A. Melendy, 84, of Westwood Road, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001.

He was born in Augusta, Sept. 30, 1916, the son of Arthur and Marion (Parmenter) Melendy.

Oakley was a graduate of Gardiner High School, class of 1933, and served as class president. He attended Phillips Andover Academy from 1933-1935 and graduated in 1939 from Bowdoin College, where he served as class president and member of Psi Upsilon Fraternity. He then graduated from Columbia Medical School in 1944.

He started his medical residency at Boston City Hospital in 1945-46 and completed it from 1948-51.

Dr. Melendy was a U.S. Army veteran, serving from 1946-48 and was discharged with the rank of captain. He opened his medical/ surgical practice in 1951 and worked in partnership with Doctors Shaw, Aslam and Wall. He retired in 1989.

He previously worked at Phillips Andover Academy, where he was an instructor of chemistry and assistant football coach.

Dr. Melendy was a communicant of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, longtime member of the Augusta Country Club, was a 1984 inductee into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame for earning 12 varsity letters at Bowdoin College and his many years of amateur golf and tennis accomplishments.

In 1986, he received the Central Maine Area Agency on Aging Living Legacy Award for his many years of positive contributions to the community. He was a member of Kennebec County and Maine Medical Association, New England Surgical Society and a Fellow at the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Melendy was predeceased by his wife of 38 years, Joan M. (Hyland) Melendy, in 1991.

He is survived by two sons, Michael J. Melendy and his wife, Christine W. Melendy, of Winthrop, and Mark P. Melendy, of San Francisco, Calif.; two daughters, Mary Lou Seaward and her husband, Brad Seaward, of Pomfret, Conn., and Meredith Tardiff, of Augusta; four grandchildren and several cousins.

There will be no public visiting hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Augusta. Burial will be at a later date in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Augusta. Arrangements are under the care of Plummer Funeral Home in Augusta.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Joan H. Melendy Nursing Scholarship Fund, c/o MaineGeneral Medical Center, 6 East Chestnut St., Augusta ME 04330.

Marjorie C. Nevins

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. —Marjorie C. Nevins, 79, of Chattanooga, passed away Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, under the care of Hospice of Chattanooga.

She was a native of Birmingham, Ala., and was raised in Atlanta, Ga., before moving to Chattanooga in 1948. She attended Brenau University of Gainsville, Ga., where she was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. She was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church and was a volunteer with the American Diabetes Association.

She was predeceased by her husband of 51 years, John W. Nevins Sr.

Survivors include her daughter, Patricia N. Hendrix, of Tullahoma, and a son, John W. Nevins Jr., of Norcross, Ga.; five grandchildren, Amelia, Laura, Leigh, Tom Hendrix and Allan Talley.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 5, with a service to be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, at Lane Funeral Home, Coulter Chapel, 601 Ashland Terrace, Chattanooga. Burial will be at the National Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Brenau University, 1 Centennial Circle, Gainsville GA 30501; St. Jude Catholic Church, 930 Ashland Terrace, Chattanooga TN 37415; or Covenant Presbyterian Church, 1610 Wilson Ave., Tullahoma TN 37388.

Ellen A. Stewart

WINTHROP — Ellen A. Stewart, 67, of St. Augustine, Fla., and Winthrop, succumbed to cancer with dignity and courage, Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, in St. Augustine.

She was born Aug. 25, 1933, in Boston, the daughter of Alfred and Rosa Demus.

Ellen was of the Lutheran faith.

Survivors include her husband, A. Marshall Stewart, of St. Augustine; two daughters, Sandra Moody and Carol Cobb, of Winthrop; two sons, Alfred Hasenfus, of Winthrop, and David Hasenfus, of Boston; one brother, Arnold Demus, of Walpole, Mass.; 14 grandchildren, Angelique, Sarah, Alysha, Darrell, Jamie, Sasha, Gina, Clyde, Fred, Ellen, Kayla, Tanya, Tavis and Kyle.

Ellen attended the Boston College of Fine Arts and graduated from Goddard College in Vermont. She retired from the Diocesan Human Relations as a supervisor.

She was an accomplished artist in all media, also an extremely talented sculpturist.

Ellen had a wonderful zest for life and the ability to make lasting and endearing friendships. Everyone who knew her loved her; she will be missed by all.

There will be visiting hours from noon until the 2 p.m. celebration of her life Wednesday, Feb. 7, at the Roberts Funeral Home, Bowdoin Street, Winthrop.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Charles M. Bailey Library, Bowdoin Street, Winthrop ME 04364, in her name.

Dr. Salvatore Sturchio

AUGUSTA — Dr. Salvatore Sturchio, 83, of Bedford Street, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta Campus, after a prolonged illness.

He was born in Newark, N.J., Sept. 19, 1917, the son of Dr. Eugenia and Ermelinda (D'Auria) Sturchio.

He was the last survivor of five siblings, all were born in Newark, N.J. He graduated from Upsula College with a degree in physics. There he was a Charter member of Ro Alpha Phi Fraternity. He obtained his medical degree from Balogna University in Italy.

Dr. Sturchio was a research physician for several major pharmaceutical companies. His research assisted in bringing many life-saving medical products to the public. He also was a member of the American Medical Writers Association. He came to Maine in 1976 for semi-retirement and was subsequently associated with the Augusta Mental Health Institute and Togus hospitals at that time.

He was a communicant of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Joan (Boyce) Sturchio, of Augusta, to whom he was married at the Vatican in Italy in 1950; also a son, Anton E. Sturchio and his wife, Susan E., of Westbrook, and twin granddaughters, Bianca Sturchio and Gabriella Sturchio, of Westbrook; several nieces and nephews.

At his request, there will be no public visiting hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, from St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Augusta. Burial will be in the spring at St. Mary's Cemetery, Green Street, Augusta. Arrangements were entrusted to the care of Plummer Funeral Home of Augusta.

Those who desire may make donations to American Diabetes Association, Maine-Memorial Processing Center, PO Box 31160, Hartford CT 06150-1160.

Leonard Edward Gaylord Jr.

WINTHROP — Leonard Edward Gaylord Jr., 80, of Clarke Street, Winthrop, died at Togus, Saturday, March 31, 2001, after a long illness.

He was born in Winthrop, June 23, 1920, the son of Leonard E. Gaylord Sr. and Ethel (Hopkinson) Gaylord, attended local schools and graduated from Winthrop High School in 1938.

He married Rosa Bruneau, July 11, 1941, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, in Winthrop.

He joined the armed services in January 1942 as a top turret gunner of a B-17. He was shot down over Berlin in Germany and was taken as a prisoner of war until his liberation in 1945.

He spent the majority of his life in business with his grandfather, James Hopkinson.

He was an avid hunter and loved to go ice fishing and flying. He was a member and former commander of Alfred Maxwell Post 40 American Legion, a former member of the Moose Lodge of Winthrop and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. In his latter years, his greatest joy was his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Rosa Bruneau Gaylord, of Winthrop; one son, James Gaylord, of Haverhill, N.H., and two daughters, Cheryl Webber, of Wayne, and Celeste Gaylord, of Farmingdale, and seven grandchildren, Jeffrey Gaylord, of Kennebunkport, Stephanie Webber, of Fairfield, Joshua Haefele, of Portland, Chad Haefele, of Winthrop, Jennifer Gaylord and Jason Gaylord, both of Haverhill, N.H., and Kayla Haefele, of Farmingdale.

A time of visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until the funeral at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 4, at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop, with the Rev. Gilbert Patenaude officiating. Spring burial will be at the Glenside Cemetery in Winthrop.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the American Lung Association of Maine, 122 State St., Augusta 04330.

Paul W. Jones

UNITY — Paul W. Jones, 65, of Unity, passed away Sunday, April 1, 2001, at a Waterville hospital.

He was born Nov. 15, 1935, in Jefferson, son of the late Everett W. and Phyllis (Parlin) Jones, and attended Palermo schools.

He married Margaret H. Haskell, June 21, 1958, and they had enjoyed 42 years of togetherness.

He was employed as a truck driver, a bus driver for SAD 3 and was a self-employed woodsman. He enjoyed camping and hunting. His greatest love was spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Margaret H. Jones, of Unity; his children, Paul Jones and his wife, Diane, of Knox, Allen Jones and his wife, Alice, of Unity, Michael Jones and his wife, Lori, of Unity, Dennis Jones and his wife, Cindy, of Unity, Melanie Waterman and her husband, Blake, of Burnham, Valarie Tweedie and her husband, Barry, of Thorndike; grandchildren, Craig and Christopher, Dereck and Elaine, Amy, Adam, and Alissa, Keith and Casey, Blake M. and Katie, and Bryan; his great-granddaughter, Mackenzie; his brother, James Jones and his wife, Linda, of Palermo; his sisters, Sylvia Morias, of Waterville, Sharon Leeman and her husband, Gary, of Palermo, and Donna Haskell and her husband, Steve, of Palermo; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a brother, Bill Jones, and a sister, Margaret Mehuren.

There will be a memorial gathering of family and friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, at Lawry Brothers Funeral Home, Depot Street, Unity. Cremation will take place at Gracelawn Memorial Park in Auburn.

Rev. Dennis J. Knox Sr.

SOLON — Rev. Dennis J. Knox Sr., 45, of South Solon Road and formerly of Libby Hill Road, in Gardiner, and Anson, died Saturday, March 31, 2001, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Thayer Unit, Waterville, after a long illness.

He was born in Rockland, Aug. 23, 1955, the son of Maynard Knox Sr. and Elizabeth (Morse) Knox, and attended schools in Gardiner and Augusta.

He had been employed by Sunoco in the North Anson plant and had previously worked at Berry's Construction in Gardiner and Consolidated Waste Services in Norridgewock.

Mr. Knox had started his own ministry, a home mission, Anointed Heart Ministry. His favorite scripture passage was Philippians 4:13.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Sheena G. Knox.

Survivors include his wife, Darlene A. (Whipple) Knox, of Solon; three sons, Dennis J. Knox Jr., of Madison, Joey E. Knox and his wife, Becky, of Anson, and Joshua J. Knox, of Solon; a daughter, Tia Decimo and her husband, Joseph, of Solon; a brother, Maynard Knox Jr., of Gardiner; three sisters, Rosemary Mazzulla and her husband, Bill, of Auburn, Shareen Paige, of Bangor, and Barbara Merril and her husband, James, of Richmond; four grandchildren, several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Relatives and friends may visit from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today Monday, April 2, at the Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta, where a funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 3. Burial will be held later this spring at the family lot in the Libby Hill Cemetery in Gardiner.
