Michael A. Jones

SKOWHEGAN — Michael A. Jones, 30, of Skowhegan, died Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, at his home in Skowhegan.

He was born April 27, 1971, in Hartford, Conn., son of Alton Jones and Rita (Kimball) Holt, and attended Hartford, Conn., and Skowhegan schools.

He was employed by the town of Skowhegan at their Waste Management facility; he also did carpentry work.

He was a member of the Trinity Free Evangelical Church in Skowhegan. He enjoyed driving in the demolition derbies at the Skowhegan Fair. Most of all he loved spending time with his children.

Survivors include his fiancee, Kelly Tucker; two children, Megan Jones and Jordan Jones, all of Skowhegan; his parents, Alton Jones of Connecticut and Rita Holt and stepfather, Carlton Holt; paternal grandmother, Rita Jones of Cornville; maternal grandmother, Jeanette LeClair of Skowhegan; three brothers, Edward LeClair and family of Skowhegan, David Penna of Brockton, Mass., and Adam Jones and family of Waterville; three sisters, Ann Kimball and family, Laurie Foster and family, and Tammy McKinney and family, all of Skowhegan; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, at the Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, at the Trinity Free Evangelical Church, 7 McClellan St., Skowhegan, with the Rev. Richard Berry officiating. Burial will take place later in the spring at the East Skowhegan Cemetery. Donations may be made in his memory to the Epilepsy Foundation of America, 4351 Garden City Drive, Landover MD 20785.

Frederick Kent

FARMINGTON — Frederick "Ralph" Kent, 98, of Farmington, died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, at Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington.

Frederick, who always liked to be called "Ralph," was born at Fayette Corner, March 10, 1903, the son of Frederick Toman Kent and Lillian (Staples) Kent. He was a direct descendent of the founder of Kents Hill School (the fifth or sixth generation), where he graduated. He married Celia Knight in 1924 and was married for 62 years, until her passing in 1987.

During their life together, they ran a dairy farm, which they acquired in 1943 in East Vassalboro for many years until he gave up farming in 1962. They belonged together to the East Kennebec Pomona Grange No. 25.

Ralph also belonged to the Vassalboro Grange No. 322 (1926), where he received his 25-year silver star certificate in 1951 and became a 50-year Golden Sheaf member in 1976; the Neguemkeag-Vassalboro Lodge No. 54 (1946), where he held the Lodge's Golden Cane "eldest member", which he received in 1994; the Sovereign Grand Commanders Council; the Scottish Rite Consistory; and the Eastern Star.

In 1989 after falling and breaking his hip, he went to live with his niece and her husband, Barbara and Pete Gordon, in the Fairbanks area, three miles north of Farmington. He remained in their home until his move to Jacob's Ladder Boarding Home in Madrid in 1999. He remained there for two years, until he went to Edgewood Living Center in Fairbanks.

In 1991 he traveled with his nephew, Eugene Kent, to England in search of the "Halls of Kent" and was able to received valuable information on its location.

Survivors include his sisters, Thelma Farwell of Windham, N.H., and Betty Clark of Millbury, Mass.; his niece, Barbara Gordon of Fairbanks, and nephew, Eugene Kent, of Hudson, Fla., and many other nieces and nephews in New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Maine.

He was predeceased by his wife, Celia Knight Kent, and his sister, Theda Tohlke of North Hampton, N.H.

A graveside service will be held in the spring under the direction of the Redington Funeral Home, 5 Park St., Waterville.

Brenda M. Meader

SIDNEY — Brenda Marie Meader, 38, of Sidney, died Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, at a Bangor hospital following a short illness.

She was born Oct. 14, 1963, in Waterville, the daughter of Roland F. and Sandra A. (Veilleux) Landry, and attended Fairfield schools. She was an avid race car fan and enjoyed and loved her five grandchildren.

She was employed for 12 years by New Balance Athletic Shoe Co. in Norridgewock.

She was predeceased by her mother.

Survivors include her father of Fairfield Center; her husband, David Meader of Sidney; daughter, Alisa J. Gill of Oakland; stepchildren, Jayde Meader of Augusta, Jacob Meader of Orlando, Fla., Jeremiah Meader of Waterville and Cassie Meader of Benton; two sisters, Tina M. Gordon of Winslow and Elizabeth Landry of Fairfield; five grandchildren; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to visit from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, at Wheeler Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Oakland. A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, at the Oakland-Sidney United Methodist Church, School Street, Oakland. Those who wish may make memorial donations to the American Lung Association, 122 State St., Augusta ME 04330.

Richard W. Michaud Ph.D.

AUGUSTA — Richard W. Michaud Ph.D., 65, of Three Mile Pond, died Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident on Dec. 18, 2001.

He was born in Augusta, Nov. 6, 1936, the only child of Wilfred T. and Mary A. (Pelletier) Michaud. He was raised on Sand Hill, attended St. Augustine School and Cony High School. Richard graduated from the University of Maine at Orono with a bachelor's degree in economics and later received his master's degree in social work from Boston University. He worked for several years in the Department of Human Services and served as the Director of the Bureau of Maine's Elderly under Governor Curtis. In 1983, he earned a Ph.D. from Southwestern University in Tucson, Ariz. He then went into private practice as Augusta Counseling Associates.

He was a Maine Guide who loved to travel, hunt and fish, and had a special love for Moosehead Lake. He was a member of the Augusta Elks Lodge and Le Club Calumet, and will always be remembered for his wit and wonderful sense of humor.

He leaves behind his beloved wife, Sandra, whom he married Sept. 11, 1993; his two daughters, Mary A. Michaud and her companion, David Vintinner, of Manchester, and Suzanne M. Pooler and her husband, Michael, of Oakland. He is also survived by four stepchildren, Ted Drummond and his wife, Bonnie, Timothy Drummond and his wife, Jeannie, Todd Drummond and his wife, Joanna, and Susan Murray; also nine grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his granddaughter, Katherine Mary Pooler in May 2001.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, at Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Augusta with the Rev. Michael Gendreau celebrant.

Rosalind S. Mills

OAKLAND — Rosalind S. Mills, 84, of Oakland, died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, at Lakewood Manor Nursing Home in Waterville following a short illness.

She was born June 5, 1917, in Belgrade, one of 11 children of Millard Kidder and Winnefore Emma (Stoddard) Stevens.

She worked at Camp Belgrade, did seasonal housekeeping for several camps in the area and was also housekeeper for several Waterville area people.

She lived most of her life in the Belgrade-Oakland area and was a former member of the Belgrade Grange.

Survivors include a daughter, Rosalie Chase of Clinton; five sons, William and Ronald Mills of Belgrade, Theodore Mills of Waldoboro, Roger and Joel Mills of Oakland; a brother, Alan Stevens of Bingham, and sister, Mildred Trask of Belgrade; nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

A graveside memorial service will be held at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Belgrade during the spring. Arrangements are by Wheeler Funeral Home of Oakland.

Leo J. Redmond Sr.

NORRIDGEWOCK — Leo Joseph Redmond Sr., 83, of Norridgewock, died Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, at Cedar Ridge Center for Health Care & Rehabilitation in Skowhegan.

He was born Aug. 2, 1918, at Long Pond, the son of Joseph A. Redmond and Buirdina (Butler) Redmond Boulette, and attended Long Pond and Jackman area schools. She served with the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Leo was employed 28 years as a millwright for Madison Pulp & Paper and Madison Paper Corp. He and his family owned and operated riding stables on the Thurston Hill Road in Madison for a number of years.

He was a member of the Golden Saddle 4-H Horse Club and served as a leader and assistant leader for several years. He was a member and past commander of the Harvell-Bishop Post No. 7865 Veterans of Foreign Wars of Madison.

A brother, Lawrence A. Redmond, died previously.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Hazel (Damren) Redmond of Norridgewock; his four children, Leo J. Redmond Jr. and his wife, Maurine of Connecticut, Eric L. Redmond and his wife, Margaret, of Florida, Claire B. Luce and her husband, Herbert, of Norridgewock, and Timothy A. Redmond and his wife, Robin, of Pennsylvania; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, at St. Sebastian Catholic Church in Madison with the Rev. Georges Plante officiating. Interment will be held later in the spring at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Augusta. Arrangements are by Giberson Funeral, 40 Maple St., Madison.

Maurice F. Valliere

SKOWHEGAN — Maurice F. Valliere, 91, a lifelong resident of Skowhegan, died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, at Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan.

He was born Oct. 27, 1910, in Skowhegan, son of Walter M. (who died in 1920) and Ora (Wyman) Valliere (who died in 1977). He graduated from Skowhegan High School, class of 1928. He served with the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II assigned to the 66th Fighter Squadron of the 57th Fighter Group as a mechanic in the ground crew in the North African Theatre of Operations.

He married Margaret Cates in Skowhegan; she died April 1, 1978.

He was employed by the American Woolen Co. in Skowhegan for many years until it closed in 1956. He then worked for the Guilford Woolen Mill in Guilford until 1962 and for Kennebec Mills in Fairfield-Waterville from 1962 to 1968 then Maine Spinning Co. from 1968 until he retired in 1972.

He was a life member of the Joseph R. Sanford Veterans of Foreign Wars Post, member of the Peters-Shortier American Legion, both in Skowhegan; a life member of the Disabled Veterans of America, member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, member of the Somerset Masonic Lodge No. 34 in Skowhegan. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling and playing cribbage. He was known as a visitor and helper for many people around town and a good friend.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Bruce (Judy) Fenlason of Biddeford; granddaughter, Miss Sara Fenlason of Minneapolis, Minn.; one sister-in-law, Helen Cates Clifford of Glen Falls, N.Y.; two nieces and one nephew.

He was predeceased by a brother, Lloyd Valliere, who died in 1936, and a sister, Ruth Watson, who died in 1988.

Friends may gather from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, for a public celebration of Maurice's life with stories and memories to begin at 5 p.m. with the Rev. Mark Tanner hosting at the Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan.

A graveside service will be held in the spring at the Southside Cemetery in Skowhegan. Arrangements are by Smart & Edwards Funeral Home in Skowhegan. Donations may be made to the Good Will-Hinckley School, PO Box 154, Hinckley ME 04104; or to the Kidney Foundation of Maine, PO Box 1134, Portland ME 04104.

Friends are asked to take just a minute a day to pray to their God for worldwide peace and for food for the hungry.

Clifford A. Fortier Jr.

1925-2002

AUGUSTA — Clifford A. Fortier Jr., 77, of Cony Road, formerly of Oakland, died Saturday, March 30, 2002, at Maine Veterans Home in Augusta after a long illness.

He was born in Jackman, March 19, 1925, the son of Clifford A. Fortier Sr. and Mary-Ann (Chamberland) Fortier-Baker.

Cliff served honorably in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and was a Purple Heart recipient.

He had been employed by Care Free Homes of Winslow for 15 years and was previously employed by Gardiner Paper Mill for five years.

Cliff was a member of American Legion Post 5 of Waterville and a former member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Marine Corps League.

He was predeceased by his wife, Joan (Morneault) Fortier, and a stepdaughter, Diane Poulin.

Survivors include a stepdaughter, Carol Champagne of Augusta; two half sisters, Deanna Allarie and her husband, Roger, of Augusta, and Joan Lapointe of Bradenton, Fla., and Old Orchard Beach; four step-grandchildren, Scott and Roger Poulin, Richard Millett and Lori Gagnon; six step great-grandchildren; a stepson-in-law, Roger Poulin Sr. of Augusta; a nephew and several cousins.

At his request, there will be no public visiting hours. A Memorial Mass will be offered at 9 a.m. Thursday, April 4, at St. Andrew's Catholic Church, Augusta. Burial will follow in the new Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Andrew's Capitol Campaign, St. Andrews Street, Augusta ME 04330. Arrangements are in the care of Plummer Funeral Home, Augusta.

Wallace F. Haggan

1933-2002

SOUTH BOSTON, Mass. — Wallace F. "Wally" Haggan, 69, of South Boston, died Friday, March 29, 2002. He was born Jan. 19, 1933, in Jackman, Maine.

He was the beloved husband of Claire (King) Haggan, loving father of Deborah Dellascio and her husband, Dennis, of Dorchester, Wallace T. and his wife, Janice, of Pembroke, Alan J. and his wife, Mary, of Braintree; loving brother of Ellsworth Haggan w/Carol Ann Worster and the late Clayton Haggan; loving grandfather of Christopher, Mark, Sherry, Michelle, Patrick, Caitlin and Michael. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

He was a veteran of the Koran War serving in the U.S. Army, member of the McKeon Post, past president of Local No. 251 I.B.E.W. He was a retired employee of General Electric and former instructor at Bay State School of Technology.

Relatives and friends are invited to call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, April 2, and 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, with a funeral to be held at 9 a.m. Thursday, April 4, from the O'Brien Funeral Home at 146 Dorchester St. in South Boston; Funeral Mass follows at 10 a.m. at St. Bridget's Church. Interment will be at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Dorchester.
