Theron A. Corliss

FARMINGDALE — Theron A. Corliss, 80, of Farmingdale, died Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation and Nursing Care at Glenridge.

Theron was born Sept. 10, 1920, in Newry, the son of Albert and Helen (Daly) Corliss, grew up in Yarmouth, and attended Richmond High School.

Mr. Corliss married Leona Letendre in 1942, and they remained married for 40 years until her death in 1982.

Theron served in the Army as an engineer during World War II. After the war he worked for Bates Manufacturing Company-Edwards Division for a time and then went to work at the Veterans Administration Medical and Regional Office Center at Togus where he retired as chief of supply in 1980. He also did printing work for Obilate Retreat House. In his retirement he worked as a courier for Bank of Maine.

When not working, Mr. Corliss enjoyed carpentry, playing cards, spending time with his family and especially camping.

He was a member of the Good Sam Club and earned lifetime membership. He was also a member of NAFCA, Capitol Area Wheels and was a past president of Cobbosseecontee Snowmobile Club. Theron was a past commander of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He is survived by his wife, Marcia Corliss; one son, Steven Corliss, and his wife, Connie, of Pittston; two daughters, Nancy A. Milliard, and her husband, Gilman, of Oakdale, Pa., and Janice H. Corliss, of Steep Falls; eight grandchildren, Claudette Biers, Michelle Milliard, Jackie Milliard, Barbara Johnston, Rachel Partin, Suzy Milliard, Jason Corliss and Stephanie Corliss; and seven great-grandchildren.

Relatives and friends may visit from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, April 4, at Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, 68 Second St., Hallowell. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, April 5, at Sacred Heart Church, Hallowell, with the Rev. George Hickey celebrant. Burial will follow, in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Old Belgrade Road, Augusta.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to Alzheimer's Association, 163 Lancaster St., Portland 04101.

Iona M. Higgins

PITTSFIELD — Iona M. Higgins, 90,. of Pittsfield, died Monday evening, Aug. 6, 2001, at Birch Grove Rehabilitation and Living Center, Pittsfield.

Iona was born in Pittsfield, Jan. 13, 1911, daughter of Melvin and Idella (Hunter) Taylor.

Iona was a homemaker and loved to cook, sew, tat and go for walks. She was a life member of Sebasticook Grange, with more than 50 years of service, and a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Pittsfield.

Iona is survived by a son, Keith Higgins, and his wife, Dallas, of Pittsfield; a sister, Irene Wentworth; grandchildren Donald Higgins and his wife, Marjorie, of Pittsfield, Derek Higgins and his wife, Heather, of Freedom, Doreen MaGee and her husband, Kevin, of Sangerville, Lisa Higgins, of Pittsfield; two great-grandchildren, Derek and Brittany Higgins, of Freedom; a daughter-in-law, Violet Higgins, of Pittsfield; a niece, Corrisann Richards, and a nephew, Merlon Dunton.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8, at Powers Cemetery, Route 2, Pittsfield; arrangements are entrusted to Donald H. Shorey Funeral Chapel, 35 Hartland Ave., Pittsfield.

Ralph M. Barton

WATERVILLE — Ralph M. Barton, 85, of Main Street, died unexpectedly Aug. 6, 2001, at Oak Grove Living and Rehabilitation Center.

He was born April 18, 1916, in Benton Station, the son of Ralph S. and Lola (Moreau) Barton.

He graduated from Lawrence High School in Fairfield. He was employed by Maine Central Railroad in Waterville in the clerical department. Mr. Barton was a World War II veteran of the Army, serving overseas in the 101st Airborne Division, Glider Infantry and Glades Infantry. He was a member of American Legion Post 5 in Waterville having gained 50-year membership, and once served as vice-commander. He also was noble grand master of the Fairfield lodge of Independent Order of Odd Fellows.

His only child, Wayne R. Barton, died in 1974, and he also was predeceased by a sister, Dorothy Damron, of Pittsfield.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley (Paquette) Barton, of Waterville and St. Pete Beach, Fla.; two sisters, Pathena B. Homestead and her husband, Frank, of Pittsfield, and Lavina Waddell, of Waterville; and several nieces and nephews.

There will be no visitation at the funeral home. A memorial service will be held Thursday, Aug. 16, at 9 a.m. at the Fr. Leonard LeClair Memorial Chapel, Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Old Belgrade Road, Augusta. Burial will follow.

Memorial donations may be sent to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 317, Augusta 04330.

Arrangements are by Gallant Funeral Home, 10 Elm St., Waterville.

Jon William Rogers

MARTINEZ, Ga. — Jon William Rogers, 64, of Oakmont Court, died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at University Hospital after a long battle with prostate cancer.

Born in Pittsfield, Maine, he was the son of George and Norma Rogers. He had lived here for the last 13 years.

Mr. Rogers was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Evans and member and past master of the Masons F&AM of Pittsfield and Oasis Shrine Club of Charlotte, N.C. He also was a member of the National Equipment Managers Council. He had retired from APAC-Southern Roadbuilders, Inc.

He served in the Air Force for four years.

Mr. Rogers was involved in public education for many years, serving as school board member and chairman of SAD 53 in Pittsfield and president of the Maine Central Institute Board of Trustees, also in Pittsfield. Recently, he served on the Evans (Georgia) High School Vocational Advisory Board.

He is survived by his wife, Anne L. Rogers, of Martinez; two daughters, Shawn Baugh, of Woodbridge, Va., and Ashley Rogers, of Martinez; three sons, Shannon Rogers, of Alpharetta, Jonathan Rogers, of San Diego, Calif., and Ryan Doody, of Martinez; and seven grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, Aug. 9, at 4 p.m. at Wesley UMC, with the Rev. Glenn Ethridge officiating. The family will receive friends at the church after the service.

Interment will be in Belfast, Maine, at a later date.

If desired, memorial contributions may be made to Wesley UMC Building Fund, 825 N. Bel Air Road, Evans. GA, 30809.

Edith (Bess) Fisher

SKOWHEGAN — Edith (Bess) Fisher, 74, of Skowhegan and Melbourne, Fla., died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

She was born in Skowhegan, May 30, 1927, the daughter of Frederick and Anna (Gilbert) Bess.

She was a graduate of Skowhegan High School, Class of 1945.

She married Jacques R. Fisher, May 28, 1947. She was a "homebody," taking great pride in her home; she enjoyed cooking and loved spending time with her family and enjoyed her grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Jacques R. Fisher, of Skowhegan and Melbourne; two daughters, Sandra Jean Bean, of Melbourne, and Linda Fisher-Lighthouse, of Rochester, N.Y.; two sons, Richard Fisher, and his wife, Gail, of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Bruce Fisher, and his wife, Deborah, of Hallandale, Fla.; 10 grandchildren, Saydra and Shagan Bean, Jim and Brett Lighthouse, Brandon, Aaron, Audrey, Heather, Courtney, and Brittnay Fisher; five sister, Theresa Bess, Ethel Bess, Ruth Bess, Jacqueline Smiley, and Joyce Arsenault; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. The family would like to extend a thank-you to a very special cousin, Shirley, and her family.

Mrs. Fisher was predeceased by three brothers, Charlie, George, and Linwood Bess.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m., Friday, Aug. 10, at Notre Dame de Lourdes Church, Water Street, Skowhegan, with the Rev. Maurice Morin celebrating. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Skowhegan.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, Skowhegan.

Bernald D. "Sonny" Wilber

HARTLAND — Bernald D. "Sonny" Wilber, 67, died Aug. 7, 2001, at a Hartland nursing-care facility following a long illness.

He was born in Madrid, Dec. 18, 1933, the son of Dean E. and Ruth E. (Brown) Wilber. He was educated in the Phillips schools, graduating from Phillips High School, Class of 1952.

He married Ruth S. Seekins in St. Albans, Sept. 3, 1955.

Sonny was a wood worker and window maker at W.H. Moore & Son in Hartland for several years. For 18 years, Sonny and Ruth worked for Great Northern Paper Co. as check-point gate attendants at Sias Hill and Twenty Mile. Their love for the woods and the outdoors made this the best time of their lives.

Sonny was an avid fisherman, hunter and all-around woodsman. He loved to bird hunt with his special friend, Zoe, his chocolate Labrador retriever.

He was a member of the Sportman's Alliance of Maine, an honorary member of the St. Albans Fire Department and a former Palmyra Little League coach for several years. He was a member of the Holiday Estates Association of Englewood, Fla. While in Florida, Sonny's favorite pastime was playing shuffleboard with his friends. Sonny loved being with and doing things with his grandchildren, and, if he could tease them, all the better.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Ruth S. Wilber, of Hartland; his mother, Ruth E. Wilber, of Madrid; four sons, James K. Wilber, and his wife, Anna of Palmyra, Russell D. Wilber, of Burlington, Wis., Brian J. Wilber, and his wife, Sabine, of Ft. Stewart, Ga., Harold D. Wilber, and his wife, Laurie, of Palmyra; two brothers, Rodney, Wilber, of Lisbon Falls, and Jack Wilber, and his wife, Audrey, of Hanover, Mass.; two sisters, Athylie, and her husband, Robert Scott, of Presquie Isle, and Joanne, and her husband, Owen James, of Madrid; 11 grandchildren, Renee LaPoine, James D. Wibler, Dean M. Wilber, Rebecca A. Wilber, Viktoria A. Wilber, Timothy H. Wilber, Devin B. Wilber, Kevin J. Wilber, Sarah A.R. Wilber, Teah Graf, and Rachel Hilton; five great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was predeceased by his father, two sisters, Myrlyn Wilber and Iris Waters, and by his mother and father-in-law, Harold and Angilee Seekins.

Friends may call 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 9, Brown Funeral Home, 34 High St., Newport. Graveside funeral service will be conducted 1 p.m.,Friday, Aug. 10,at Palmyra Village Cemetery, with the Rev. Brenda Haskell officiating.

Friends who wish make make memorial donations to the Palmyra Little League, c/o Ron Curtis, 40 Madawaska Road, Palmyra 04965. Envelopes will be available at Brown Funeral Home.

Verona L. Watts

NEWPORT — Verona L. Watts, 74, of Newport, died Aug. 4, 2001, at a Hartland nursing-care facility following a long illness.

She was born in Boston, May 31, 1927, the daughter of William and Susie Nickerson.

For many years she had made her home at 16 McNalley Terrace, Newport.

She is survived by her daughter, Susan Phillips, of Halifax, Mass.; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held in Massachusets at a later date.

Arrangements are entrusted to the care of the Brown Funeral Home, 34 High St., Newport.

Rhoda F. (Bragg) Watson

PALMYRA — Rhoda F. (Bragg) Watson, 47, died August 6, 2001, at her Route 100 residence.

She was in born in Hartland, Oct. 18, 1953, the daughter of Percy and Fern (Rice) Bragg.

She had worked in a local shoe shop but was most recently employed by the Cianbro Corporation in Pittsfield, where she truly enjoyed working. She liked traveling, cooking, shopping and spending time with her husband and their special companion, Shelby, her little Papillion dog.

She was predeceased by her father, Percy Bragg, and a brother, Gordon Bragg.

In addition to her mother, of Pittsfield, she is survived by her husband William Bill Watson, of Palmyra; a daughter Angela Watson, of Waterville; and two sisters, her beloved and special sister, Beulah Wyman, and Beverly Richardson, both of Palmyra; several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Friday, Aug. 10, Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main St., Newport. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 11, at Newport Full Gospel Church, with the Rev. G. Martin Gentzler, pastor of the First Church of The Nazarene, Bangor, officiating. Burial will be in Palmyra Village Cemetery.

Floral arrangements are welcome, or memorial donations may be made in her memory to Cancer Care of Maine, care of Eastern Maine Charities, Box 404, Bangor ME 04402. Envelopes will also be available at the funeral home.

Bernadyne P. Davis

1912-2002

SKOWHEGAN — Bernadyne P. Davis, 90, a resident of Skowhegan since 1937, died Sunday, July 28, 2002, at Woodlawn Nursing Home in Skowhegan.

She was born March 21, 1912, in Winslow, daughter of Miles and Helen (Simpson) Powers, and graduated from Winslow High School, class of 1930.

She was the wife of Judge George M. Davis.

She was a member of the Federated Church, First Maine Philathea Class, Skowhegan Woman's Club, and Skowhegan Woman's Aid Society.

Survivors include one son, George M. Davis Jr. and wife Lauralee of Skowhegan; one daughter, Virginia P. Barron of South Berwick; grandchildren, Christen Cahill of Skowhegan, Jennifer Leonard and her husband, Douglas, of Palermo, Deborah O'Brien and her husband, David, of Kittery, Thomas Blackett of Newton, Mass.; great-grandchildren, Benjamin Nawfel of Skowhegan, Lindsay, Brady and Sierra O'Brien of Kittery, and Tucker and Madison Leonard of Palermo.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 31, at Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan, with the Rev. Mark Tanner officiating. Burial will be at Southside Cemetery in Skowhegan. Donations may be made in her memory to the Federated Church Memorial Fund, PO Box 504, Skowhegan ME 04976.
