Viola B. Lapin

WATERVILLE — Viola B. Lapin, 89, of Waterville, died Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2000, in Natick, Mass.

She was born April 6, 1911, in Waterville, daughter of Elmer W. and Theresa Gurney, and graduated from Waterville High School in 1928. She had been employed at Levine's Department Store as a bookkeeper in Waterville.

She was a communicant of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

She was predeceased by her husband, Julius Lapin.

Survivors include her daughter, Brenda Troy and her husband, David, of Wellesley, Mass.; grandchildren, David Troy and his wife, Kimberly, of Wethersfield, Conn., and Melinda E. Troy, of Wellesley, and great-grandmother, Chloe Troy, of Wethersfield.

A memorial service date will be announced later; arrangements are by Veilleux Funeral Home of Waterville.

John L. Merrill

SOUTH SOLON — A celebration of the life of John L. Merrill, 78, who died Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000, will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, at Skowhegan Federated Church, Island Avenue, Skowhegan.

Arrangements are under the direction of Smart & Edwards Funeral Home of Skowhegan.

Mary M. Thomas

RANGELEY PLANTATION — Mary M. Thomas, 84, of Rangeley Plantation, died Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2000, at her home in Rangeley Plantation following a long illness.

She was born May 14, 1916, in Providence, R.I., the daughter of John I. and Esther V. (Shannon) Carey. She attended schools in Hopkinton, Mass. She married Henry Thomas, April 19, 1933; he died Nov. 25, 1973.

She was a waitress at Ken's Steak House in Framingham, Mass., for 16 years. She and her husband moved to Rangeley Plantation in 1967. She was tax collector and treasurer for Rangeley Plantation for 30 years. She also worked at Saddleback Motor Inn for many years.

She was a member of Church of The Good Shepherd, the Pythian Sisters, Rangeley Sno-Drifters Snowmobile Club and Hopkinton Grange in Hopkinton, Mass.

She is survived by a son, Henry Thomas Jr., of Hopkinton, Mass.; two daughters, Beatrice Hewins, of Hopkinton, Mass., and Beverly King, of Framingham, Mass.; a son-in-law, Keith Eagling, of Michigan; two sisters-in-law, Mary Carey, of Hopkinton, Mass., and Edith Carey, of Bradenton, Fla.; 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Mary Eagling; two brothers, Francis and George Carey; a granddaughter, Beatrice Vance.

Visitation hours will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. with a funeral at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Rangeley. Interment will be at the Evergreen Cemetery in Rangeley. Arrangements under the direction of Adams Funeral Home, Main Street, Phillips.

Friends wishing may make donations in her memory to Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice Foundation, PO Box 819, Lewiston ME 04243-9800; or Rangeley Regional Ambulance, c/o Dennis Mercer, PO Box 1078, Rangeley ME 04970; or to a charity of one's choice.

David D. Gray

STARKS — David D. Gray, 49, of Starks, died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000, at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

He was born Oct. 22, 1951, in Skowhegan, son of Elmer and Marjorie (Dillon) Gray. He graduated from Plainville High School in Connecticut.

He married Nadine Farris, Feb. 11, 1972.

He was employed by Sunoco for 20 years and most recently by Cat Lumber in Strong.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus No. 2399 and a member of the Guardian Angels. He was a communicant of St. Sebastian's Church in Madison. He loved to saw lumber and to kayak.

Survivors include his wife, Nadine, of Starks; a daughter, Sarah Gray, of Starks; his mother, Marjorie Gray, of Highland Plantation; sister, Arlene Trudel and her husband, Steve, of Lexington; brother, Ivan Gray and his wife, Joyce, of Wethersfield, Conn.; a very special sister-in-law, Theresa Shatzer, of Wolfeboro, N.H.; several aunts, uncles, cousins and one nephew.

He was predeceased by his father, Elmer Gray.

Visiting hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 3, at the Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 261 Madison Ave., Skowhegan.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 4, at St. Sebastian Church, Main Street, Madison, with the Rev. Georges Plante officiating. Interment will follow at the St. Sebastian Cemetery in Madison.

Thelma L. Little

MANCHESTER, Conn. —Thelma Lewis Little, 82, went to be with her Lord Friday, Nov. 24, 2000, at Manchester Memorial Hospital.

She was born Oct. 25, 1918, in Waterville, Maine, daughter of Harriet and Linwood Lewis.

Thelma moved to Hartford, Conn., in 1957, and resided there for 19 years, then moving to Manchester.

She was predeceased by her parents, her sisters, Florence, Hazel, Muriel and Lorraine, and her brothers, Howard, Carroll and Ted.

Survivors include her brother, Ray Lewis, of Newington, Conn., several nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, and cousins in Maine.

Private services will be held Monday, Dec. 4, at Pine Grove Cemetery in Waterville, with Father Tracy officiating.

Memorial donations may be made to the Heart Association of Maine or the National Foundation for the Blind.

Leonard J. Pelotte

SIDNEY — Leonard J. Pelotte, 70, of Sidney, died early Thursday morning, Nov. 30, 2000, at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Waterville.

He was born May 16, 1930, in Sidney, son of Alfred and Phoebe (Levine) Pelotte, and attended Sidney schools. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

At one time, he was employed by Diamond International in Oakland and was a self-employed woodsman. For many years, he owned and operated Leonard Pelotte Construction in Sidney.

His wife of 43 years, Geraldine Pelotte, and a son, Earl, died previously.

Survivors include two daughters, Rebecca Philbrick and her husband, John, of Sidney, and Pamela Pelotte and her fiance, Timothy Powers, of Pittsfield; three grandchildren, Cari and Matthew Philbrick and Lisa Arbour, all of Sidney, and two great-grandchildren, Kristen and Morgan Arbour, of Sidney; several cousins, and his dog, Poopie. He will be missed by his special friends at the Middle Road General Store.

A graveside funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, at the Lewis Cemetery, Cottle Road, Oakland. Arrangements are by Wheeler Funeral Home of Oakland.

Those who wish may make memorial donations to the Sidney Rescue, c/o Sidney Town Hall, 2986 Middle Road, Sidney ME 04330.

Lucille M. Sweetser

STRONG — Lucille M. Sweetser, 70, of Strong, died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000, at Orchard Park Nursing Care & Rehab Center in Farmington, after a short fight with cancer.

She was born Aug. 23, 1930, in Rangeley, the daughter of Alton and Ethelyn (Bachelder) Anderson, attended Rangeley schools and received a general educational development (GED) diploma in 1985.

She was employed at Forster Manufacturing Co. for many years until she retired in 1993. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting and plastic canvas. She also enjoyed taking care of young children.

She is survived by a son, Wilmot F. Sweetser and his wife, Beverly, of Phillips; two brothers, Carl, of Strong, and Douglas and his wife, Amelia, of Strong; two sisters, Louise Sweetser, of Wilton, and Althea Phillips, of Portland; three grandchildren, Wilmot F. Sweetser Jr. and his wife, Pamela, of Freeman, Veronica Towne and her husband, Larry, of Wells, and Rebecca Lander and her husband, Shaun; five great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1, at Adams Funeral Home, Main Street, Phillips. A graveside service will be held in the spring.

Friends wishing may make donations in her memory to the American Cancer Society, Maine Division Inc., 52 Federal St., Brunswick ME 04011.

Isaiah A. Caouette-Sanipas

SMITHFIELD — Isaiah Ali Caouette-Sanipas, infant son of Jesse L. Sanipas and Heather A. Caouette, died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, shortly after being born at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Besides his parents, survivors include maternal grandparents, Kim and Glen Caouette, of Madison, and Cindy and Damon Wyman, of Smithfield, paternal grandparents, Mary St. Amand-Sanipas, of Waterville, and Wayne Sanipas, of Lewiston; sister, Taylor Meader, of Waterville; maternal great-grandparents, Sally Merry and the late David Merry, of Smithfield, Marilyn Caouette, of Norridgewock, and Ronald and Peggy Caouette, of Winslow; paternal great-grandparents, James St. Amand, of Fairfield, and Rita Sanipas, of Lewiston, maternal great-great-grandmother, Eleanor Merry-Capner, of Utah.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, at the Wheeler Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Oakland. Spring burial will be held at the Gould Cemetery in Smithfield.

Priscilla C. Doyle

NEW SHARON — Priscilla C. Doyle, 87, of New Sharon, died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at her home in New Sharon after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born July 8, 1913, in Brookline, Mass., the daughter of William L. and Marie E. (Lombard) Perry. She attended Massachusetts schools, graduating from Brookline High School and the Boston City Hospital of nursing.

She was employed at the Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington, retiring in 1981. She loved shopping, knitting, reading and doing crossword puzzles.

She was a communicant of St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

She is survived by three daughters, Virginia and her husband, Gino Nelson, of Hendersonville, N.C., Dorothy Doyle and her friend, Robert Hallman Jr., of New Sharon, and Paula Doyle, of New Sharon; son, William and his wife, Betty Thompson, of Vero Beach, Fla.; stepdaughter, Nancy McCarthy and her husband, Charlie, of South Colton, N.Y.; six grandchildren, Jerry and his wife, Shannon Nelson, and Carol Nelson, both of Mechanicsville, Md., Angela Thompson and her partner, Mark Anchor, of Industry, Tracy and her husband, Farren Jewell, of New Sharon, Diane Thompson and her fiance, Jay Haley, of Temple, Paul Brackett, of New Sharon; step-grandchildren, Bridgette McCarthy and Sean McCarthy, of Colton, N.Y.; 13 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Roy Perry, of Durham, N.C., and Robert Perry, of Braintree, Mass.; two sisters, Phyllis Nuss, of Braintree, Mass., and Paula Perry, of California; several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her two husbands, William Filon Thompson and Herbert E. Doyle; nine brothers and sisters.

At the request of the family there will be no visitation hours. A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are under the direction of Adams Funeral Home of Farmington.

Darren R. Jewell

KENNEBUNK — Darren Roland Jewell, 33, of Poland, was unexpectedly taken from us as the result of a tragic accident in Kennebunk, Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001.

He was born Nov. 17, 1967, at William Backus Hospital in Norwich, Conn., son of Roland L. Jewell and Linda (Whitmore) Tanguay. Darren was educated in Livermore Falls. He married Donna Craft, his companion and life partner for the past 12 years, Dec. 26, 1996.

At the time of his death, he was a member of Local No. 7 of the Ironworkers of South Boston, Mass., and was employed by Atlantic Bridge of Salisbury, Mass.

The light of Darren's life was his family with whom he spent all of his spare time. He enjoyed playing guitar and was very health conscious and liked to work out. His beautiful smile and happy-go-lucky attitude will be forever missed by his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Donna, of Poland; his three daughters, Amanda, Jessica and Danielle, all of Poland; his father and stepmother, Roland and Ruth Jewell, of Alder Stream Township; his mother, Linda, of Pamona Park, Fla.; brothers, Duane, Darryl and Dale, of Florida; stepbrothers, Jeffrey Meserve, of Montana, Allen Hoffman, of Texas; stepsisters, Maj. Diane Dunn, of Bangor, and Tonja-Sue Meserve, of Livermore Falls; his paternal grandmother, Eva Snowman Jewell, of Farmington; his mother- and father-in-law, Charles and Martha Craft, of Crescent City, Fla.; three brothers-in-law, Tony, Daniel and James Craft, all of Crescent City, Fla.; several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to call from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, at Wiles Funeral Home, 136 High St., Wilton.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, at the funeral home.

Those who desire may give gifts in his memory to the Jewell Children Trust Fund, c/o Key Bank, PO Box 829, Wilton ME 04294; envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
