Gertrude E. Smith

Rochester, NH- Gertrude E. Smith, 89 years, of Lincoln Terrace died January 16, 2005 at Frisbie Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.

Gertrude was born November 22, 1915 in Bridgewater, MA a daughter of Jessie and Eliza White Ames.

Gertrude became a fancy stitcher for Somersworth Shoe
Manufacturers in Somersworth, NH where she retired in 1988.

Gertrude enjoyed her retirement. She kept busy doing beautiful needlepoint , crocheting, and knitting. She had a nice circle of friends that she enjoyed playing cards and dining out with. She was a great cook and was especially known for her lemon cake and bread pudding. She was a very proud woman who could do many things well.

Gertrude loved her family. She could often be seen taking her great grandchildren to MacDonalds. She was always interested in what her family was doing and where they were traveling.

She is predeceased by her grandson Dale Smith.

Gertrude is survived by her son Ronald and Rachel Smith of North Berwick; granddaughters Brenda and Patrick Gagne of North Berwick, and Darlene and Gary Louks of Rome, Ohio; sister Barbara Lajoy of Berwick; and great granddaughters Amy and Elizabeth Gagne.

Friends may call from 12-1:30 pm on Tuesday, January 18 at Laing-Bibber Funeral Chapel, 36 Rochester Street, Berwick, ME. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 2 pm January 18 at Our Lady of Peace with Father John Skehan. Interment will follow in the Spring at Evergreen cemetery in Berwick.

Glenn E. Higgins

Glenn E. Higgins Jr., 57, of Kennebunk, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005 at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.

He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Jan. 22, 1948, a son of Glenn E. and Mary Alice Trantum Higgins. Glenn graduated magna cum laude from Hofstra University in 1971, and received his master's in 1976, and Ph.D. in 1981 from SUNY at Stoneybrook.

Most recently, Glenn was medical director, psychology- neuropsychology at UnumProvident until his recent illness. For many years, he maintained a private practice in Kennebunk.

He married Myrna C. Cohan on July 5, 1971.

Glenn was affiliated with Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford, and was a member of the American Psychological Association in Clinical and Neuropsychology, the American Board of Disability Analysts, Fellow, American College of Forensic Examiners, Massachusetts Neuropsychological Society, the Maine Psychological Association, and the National Academy of Neuropsychology.

He was also associated with the Certified National Council of Health Providers in Psychology (1990), Maine Licensed Psychologist (1991), ABDA Senior Disability Analyst (1995) and the BCFE-Certified Forensic Examiner.

Besides his wife of Kennebunk, Glenn is survived by his parents of Asheville, N.C.; a brother, Paul Higgins and his wife, Barbara of Lexington, Ky.; a niece, Madison and a nephew, Ethan.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 5, at the First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church of Kennebunk.

Grace Elaine Coombs

Grace Elaine Coombs, age 77 of Ross Road, died Wednesday, February 2, 2005 at the Kennebunk Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born in Eastport, Maine on February 18, 1927, the daughter of Everett and Helen Malloch.

Grace worked at Clarostat in Dover, N.H. and was a member of the Ogunquit Methodist Church.

She enjoyed knitting, sewing and her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Grace was predeceased by her husband, Roland F. Coombs.

Surviving are a son, Edward Coombs and his wife Mildred of Wells; two daughters, Karen Darling and her husband John of Wells, and Beth Mayne and her husband Robert of Woodstock, GA; three brothers, James Malloch and Bernard Malloch both of Lake Havasu City, Arizona, and Richard Malloch of Portland, Maine; nine grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Harold L. Crichton

Harold L. Crichton, age 87 and formerly of Mars Hill, died Sunday, February 20, 2005 at Shaw House, Partners in Care Giving, in Biddeford.

He was born in Mars Hill, Maine on May 20, 1917, a son of David and Annie May Montgomery Crichton.

He attended local schools there and worked for Sears and Roebuck for many years in management. Mr. Crichton had also sold real estate for a time.

He enjoyed gardening and was also an Eagle Scout.

He is predeceased by his wife, Patricia Findland; and four beloved brothers, James, Robert, Philip and Paul.

Mr. Crichton is survived by his daughter, Marion Crichton King of Kennebunkport, Maine; two granddaughters, Allison Mary Lindy and her husband, Matthew of Chicago and Lauren Crichton King of Boston, Mass; and many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be from 2-4 and 6-8p.m. Thursday at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer Street, Kennebunk. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1p.m. Friday at St. David’s Church, Rt.1, Kennebunk.

Burial will be at the Kings Grove cemetery in Mars Hill, Maine in the spring.

Harold W. Dixon

Harold W. Dixon 95 years a resident of High Street Kennebunk died Sunday February 13, 2005 at the Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford after a brief illness.

Mr. Dixon was born in Ogunquit, Maine on December 27, 1909 a son of Wilmont and Lizzie Winn Dixon and attended Park Street School of Kennebunk.

He was employed at Roger Fibers Co. until WWII, when he was employed by South Portland Shipyard.

After the war, he returned to Rogers Fibers until they sold out in 1952. He worked odd jobs until 1957 when he was employed by Cyro of Sanford until retirement in 1965.

Harold loved going to the beach, loved “Deb’s hot dogs and Root Beer”. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He rode his motorcycle until he was 82 years old also rode his exercise bike 10 miles per day up to present day !!!

He was predeceased by his parents, his brothers Roland, Morris, William Dixon, his sisters Cora Gordon, Delia Moody, Alice Stevens, and Flora Fernald.

He is survived by two sons Robert 'Bob’ D. Dixon and Rodney A. Dixon, both of Kennebunk, 5 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

Memorial Services will be held 11 AM Thursday February 17th at the Bibber Memorial Chapel 67 Summer Street Kennebunk.

Interment will be in Ocean View cemetery Wells in the spring.

Should friends desire memorial donation may be made to the American Lung Association 122 State Street Augusta, Maine 04330 in Mr. Dixon’s memory.

Helene Summers

Helene Kerr Summers, age 97, formerly of Huntington Common and Bridgeport, CT., died Tuesday, January 18, 2005 at the Kennebunk Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born in Schenectady, NY on October 2, 1907, the daughter of Thomas W. and Bessie Barrie Kerr. She graduated from Schenectady, NY High School and Meredith College in North Carolina.

Helene was a homemaker all of her life and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Schenectady, and former PTA President and PTA Council President in Bridgeport, CT.

Her Husband, Lt. Col. J.L. Summers, died in 1997.

She is survived by a daughter, Dr. Jaylene Kerr Summers of Arundel; and two grandchildren, Shaw David Tilton of Lyman, and Nathaniel Jay Tilton of Charlestown, MA.

At the request of the family, there will be no services.

Donations can be made in her memory to the First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church of Kennebunk, PO Box 235, Kennebunk, ME 04043.

James L. Ward

James L. Ward, 88, of Alewive Road, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005 at the Kennebunk Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

He was born in Kennebunk on Feb. 28, 1916, a son of Harold E. and Irma Lavin Ward. He attended Kennebunk schools and Hebron Academy.

During World War II, James served in the U.S. Army Air Corps for four years, first in England, then in the invasion of Italy. He was stationed on an air base there, and drove an ambulance helping crash victims.

Returning home after the war, he worked for 32 years at the Portsmouth Navy Yard.

He is survived by two nephews, Bruce Ward of Gorham and John Ward of Silver Spring, Md.; two nieces, Kathleen Yde of Chuluota, Fla., and Patricia Costello of Upton, Mass.

A graveside service will be held in the spring at Hope cemetery in Kennebunk.

Jeannne M. Bourque

Jeanne Marie Bourque, age 70 of Post Road, died Friday, February 4, 2005 at St. Andre’s Health Care Center in Biddeford.

She was born in Trumbull, CT on May 4, 1934, a daughter of Harry and Helen Gammon Anderson.

Jeanne worked as a cashier most of her life and had worked at WT Grants and Ligett’s Drug Store.

She served as President of the Women’s Auxiliary of the North End Little League in Connecticut, and was a member of the P.T.A. at Notre Dame High School in Fairfield, CT.

She married John K. Bourque on November 24, 1956.

After moving to Wells, she became a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Wells and was a former communicant of St. Patrick’s Church in Bridgeport, CT.

Jeanne was known as a great cook and was a very proud mother of their son, Michael, who serves as a Commander with the U.S. Navy.

She is predeceased by a brother, Swede Anderson.

Surviving are her husband of Wells; her son, Cdr. Michael Bourque of Topsham, ME; a brother, Charles Anderson of Oxford, CT; two sisters, Barbara Bourque of Stratford, CT. and Shirley Newton of Milford, CT; and one grandchild.

A memorial service will be held in Connecticut in the spring at a date to be announced.
