Viola M. Day
1999-01-14

SOUTH PARIS -Mrs. Viola M. Day, 86, died Monday, January 11, at the Market Square Health Care Center in South Paris. She was a resident of Norway.

Mrs. Day was born in Brownfield on August 14, 1912, the daughter of Howard and Grace May (Saint Clare) Miller. She worked for the Norway Shoe Shop and the Canning Factory in South Paris. She was married in Brownfield on July 20, 1936, to the late Leroy Day, who died in January of 1968.

Survivors include three sons, Bruce Day of South Paris, Roger Day of Roxbury and David Day of Norway; two daughters, Mrs. Franklin (Marion) Rivers of Oxford and Mrs. John (Minerva) Morgan; one step son, Merton Day of Indiana; two step daughters, Ethelyn Day of South Paris and Mrs. Robert (Natalie) Roaks of Welchville; two sisters, Iva Hatch of Fryeburg and Gertrude Morse of Dayton; three brothers, Howard Miller, Jr of West Paris, Alfred Miller of Alabama and Pearly Miller of Florida and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held in the spring at the Cornish cemetery in Cornish. Arrangements are under the direction of the Meader & Son Funeral Home in Rumford.

Joseph Norton Day
1999-06-03

HARRISON - Joseph N. Day, 78, died Friday, June 28, 1999, at his home in Harrison.

He was born in East Stoneham on July 13, 1920, the son of William and Gloria Grover Day.

He was educated in Harrison schools and also attended Bridgton Academy.

He owned and operated Day Wood Products on Maple Ridge in Harrison for many years.

He married the former Elsie C. Currier on August 30, 1950; she died August 17, 1978.

He served with the United States Army Air Corp during WWII in New Guinea. He was a life member of the Ronald G. St. John V.F.W in Harrison.

Survivors include a stepson Raymond C. Currier of Unionville CN; a brother, Russell Day, of Norway; two sisters, Marion Green of Greene and Margart Hussey of Harrison. He was predeceased by two sisters, Doris and Kaye, and five brothers, Richard, Norman, Kenneth, William, Jr. and Francis.

Graveside Services were held at the Norway Center Cemetery.

Arrangements were under the care of the Raymond-Wentworth Funeral Home, Bridgton.

Philip Wayning Daye
1998-09-24

NORWAY Philip Wayning Daye, 99, of North Norway, died unexpectedly Monday morning, September 21, 1998, at Stephens Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Daye was born in Arrowsic, ME, March 17, 1899, the son of the late William R. and Josephine (Witham) Daye, and was educated in the Bath schools. He was the last surviving veteran of World War I, in the Bethel area, having served with the 29th Co. Battery D, 54th Artillery, in France where he suffered mustard gas exposure. He was discharged from the service in March of 1919, as a Corporal.

Mr. Daye then went to work, as a pipefitter, at the Texas Yard, of Bath Iron Works.

On June 25, 1923, he married the former Nellie Jodrey, and they established their home in Bethel. She predeceased him in 1974. Philip was associated with the Stowell-McGregor Mill, of Bryant Pond, and later at the Hugh Thurston Dowel Mill, in Bethel, where he retired in 1939, due to his war injuries. He maintained his home in Bethel for over half a century. In June of 1975, he married Cordelia (Rowe) Clark, who also predeceased him in 1980.

Mr. Daye was a charter member of Mundt-Allen Post #81, American Legion, of Bethel, a member of Maine Veterans, World War I, of the U.S.A., and the VFW, as well as member of the Oxford Advent Christian Church, of Oxford, and the Oxford Senior Citizens.

Mr. Daye is survived by seven daughters, Patricia Daye, of Bethel, Pearl Phillips, of Rumford, Carolyn Witter, of South Paris, Marolyn Mills, of N. Norway, with whom he resided since 1979, Audrey Mixer, of Bath, Tamarra Newell, of Norway, and Donna Daye, of West Paris; three sons, Parker Daye, of Greenwood, Edward Daye, of Sunday River, and Aubrey Daye, of Bethel; 28 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

He was pre-deceased by a son, Philip Daye, who was killed in action, in Burma on July 1, 1944, as a member of Merrill's Marauders; a daughter, Phyllis Sweetser, who died in August 1987; and a sister, Adeline Dexter.

Funeral services will be held at the Greenleaf Funeral Home, Bethel, Thursday at 11 a.m. with Interment in Riverside Cemetery, Bethel. Friends who wish may make donations to: Mundt-Allen Post #81, P.O. Box 618, Bethel, ME, 04217-0618.

Frances M. Ward Dean
1999-02-25

NORWAY - Frances M. (Richardson) Ward Dean, 85, of Gates Hill Road, West Paris, died early Tuesday morning, February 23, 1999, at Stephens Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Dean was born in West Paris, at the Richardson homestead, Stearns Hill, the daughter of the late Clarence and Vivia (Swift) Richardson.

She attended West Paris schools, and graduated from West Paris High School with the class of 1931, as the Valedictorian, going on to graduate from Gray's Business College, in 1932.

On September 12, 1933, she married the late Hartley Ward, who died in 1963.

On July 2, 1965, she married the late Floyd Dean, who died May 19, 1982.

Mrs. Dean was employed for several years at the Pownal State School.

Ralph E. DeCoster
1999-06-03

MINOT - Ralph E. DeCoster, 72, of Woodman Hill Road, Minot, died Thursday morning, May 27 at his home.

He was born in Auburn, August 20, 1926, the son of Arthur and Isabelle King DeCoster.

He attended school in Auburn and served two years in the U.S.Navy.

He and his brother were owners of Rideout Trucking on Pine Street in Auburn. He later worked as a courier for Casco Bank, retiring in 1991.

In 1950 he married Betty Jane Hiscock of South Livermore and they just celebrated their 49th anniversary on April 22.

Mr. DeCoster was one of the original members of the Minot Moonshiners Snowmobile Club and was a former president of the Minot Community Club.He attended the Nazarene Church in Mechanic Falls.

Survivors include his wife of Minot; two sons and their wives, David and Catherine of Gray and Dennis and Betsy of Minot; three grandchildren Jeremy, Ross and Wendy DeCoster.

Mr.DeCoster was predeceased by a brother, 5, and a sister, Shirley.

Funeral services wee held Saturday, May 29 at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Mechanic Falls. Interment followed in Mt.Auburn Cemetery, Auburn.

Those wishing may make memorial gifts in his memory to Minot Rescue, P.O. Box 54, Minot, ME or Androscoggin Home Health Service, Hospice Care, 15 Strawberry Ave., Lewiston,ME.

Mr. Wilder DeCoster Jr.
1999-10-28

HARTFORD - Wilder DeCoster Jr., 83, a life-long resident of Hartford, died Monday evening, October 18 at Central Maine Medical Center, Lewiston, where he had been a patient.

Mr. DeCoster was born in Hartford, July 10, 1916, the son of the late Wilder and Emma (McCallister) DeCoster, and attended Hartford schools.

A machinist by vocation, he had been associated with Maine Machine, of South Paris, for a number of years; before he retired.

Mr. DeCoster enjoyed the outdoors, and especially enjoyed working on the wood lots with his nephew, Rusty.

He married the former Phyllis Tripp July 2, 1966, who survives him.

Besides his wife of 33 years, he is survived by several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Friends called at the Andrews Funeral Home, Buckfield, on Friday evening.

Graveside services were held at the Highland Cemetery, West Poland, on Saturday.

Dr. Coburn DeGoosh
1998-09-17

NORWAY Dr. Coburn DeGoosh, DVM, 78, of Norway died Friday morning, September 11, 1998, at Stephens Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Lyme, NH, October 6, 1919, the son of Howard E. and Nettle Pushee DeGoosh.

He attended public schools in Lyme and Hanover, graduating from Hanover High School in 1937.He received his pre-veterinary studies at University of New Hampshire and was granted the degree of DVM by Cornell University in 1951.He faithfully served his country in the pacific during World War II in the Army.

In 1945 he married Jesse Alice Olifent in Claremont, West Australia. Mrs. DeGoosh died in 1986.

His career spanned 13 years of general practice in Hanover,NH and Norway, 10 years of research which included three years with Parke-Davis in Mittagong, NSW, Australia ,and seven years with Pfizer, Inc., in Terre Haute, IN, specializing in veterinary parasitology. Then he spent 12 years of regulatory veterinary medicine with the Maine Department of Agriculture in large animal disease control with seasonal work as race track veterinarian,retiring in 1986 to return to Norway,

He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, Oxford Lodge # 18 AF & AM, past master of Dresden Lodge in 1980 and past District Deputy Grand Master of the 10th Masonic District,Veterans of Btry,B,Dover,NH, Norway-Paris Kiwanis Club, Toastmasters International, serving as president of the Vigo Club in Terre Haute,IN. and Kennebec Valley Club in Augusta and as Governor of Area 6, Maine.

He was also a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, State Veterinary Associations of New Hampshire, Maine ,Indiana and NSW ,Australia, American Association of Bovine Practitioners, American Association of Veterinary Parasitologists and the American Association. for the Advancement of Science.

He enjoyed gardening and working with his hands, playing bridge and cribbage, and was an amateur writer, the co-author of several articles in professional journals,and two historical books.

Survivors include a son, Stephen DeGoosh of Marquette, MI; a daughter and son-in-law. Suzanne and Stephen Dunlap of Westborough, MA; four grandchildren, Margaret and Coburn DeGoosh and Kyle and Jess Dunlap; four brothers, John of Las Vegas, NV ,Howard of Grantham, NH, Kent of Franklin,VT and David of Fairlee,VT; five sisters, Anne DeGoosh of Hanover, NH, Jane Cramer of Fairlee, VT ,Sue Alexander of Colchester, VT, Nettle Ackerman of Piermont NH and Nancy Doyle of Meridith,NH.

Dr. DeGoosh was predeceased by two brothers, Richard, who died in 1992 and Ellsworth, who died in 1997 and a sister, Mary Wing, who died in 1998.

A memorial service was held Sunday at Christ Episcopal Church,Norway with masonic services conducted at that time by Oxford Lodge #1 8 AF&AM.

Laila Dehetre
1999-07-02

Laila Emilia Dehetre, 55, died Tuesday at her home in Gray.

Mrs. Dehetre had worked for Cole Farms for eight years, after working for Health-Tex.

She was a member of the Bible Believing Baptist Church, as well as the Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

She is survived by her husband of 27 years, Donald Andrew Dehetre, of Gray; two sons, Donald A. II and Michael M., both of Gray; one brother, Donald D. Aho, of Summerdale, Ala.; and four sisters, Nancy L. Curtis, of Owls Head, Arlene McFarland, of Oakland, Mary A. Brennan, of Yarmouth, and Linda A. Bulger, of Waterford, Conn.

Burial will be in Gray Village Cemetery, with the Rev. Darwin Vail officiating. Arrangements were by Wilson Funeral Home.

Roland R. Delamater
1998-05-14

NORWAY - Roland R. Delamater, 81, of Oxford, died Saturday evening at Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway after a brief illness.

He was born March 6, 1917 at Augusta, the son of Laurence C. and Ruth E. Delamater. He was educated in Augusta and Lewiston area schools and graduated from Lewiston High School in 1935. Later he entered the US Army and was a veteran of World War II.

He married the former Yvonne Labonte on October 28, 1939 and they made their home in Greene and Lewiston until 1959 when they purchased Oxford Pines Resort in Oxford.

Mr. Delamater had an active career in the Lewiston-Auburn area where he retired in 1982 after many years as a licensed securities broker with the New York and other major stock exchanges. He and his wife moved to Myrtle Beach, SC, to spend winters beginning in 1982 and returned each summer to Maine.

Mr. Delamater enjoyed studying the Bible and recently completed an extensive writing on the Old Testament.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years; two sons and daughters-in-law, Roland C. Delamater and his wife Sheila of West Paris, and James D. Delamater and his wife Jean of Oxford; a sister, Roberta Picard of Branson, FL; two grandsons, Christopher and Matthew Delamater, both of Oxford; two step-grandchildren, Briana Cannulli and Heith Bernard and many nieces and nephews.

At his request, there will be no visiting hours or funeral.
